CEB opens 5 new routes for Vismin

THE Philippines’ leading airline, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), adds five new routes to its inter-regional network, connecting more islands from Mindanao to Visayas to the rest of the archipelago.

The new routes stem from requests from stakeholders, particularly in Mindanao, to improve connectivity of key cities.

Starting July 26, 2017, CEB wholly-owned subsidiary Cebgo will fly three times weekly (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) between Cebu and Masbate, Davao and Dumaguete, and Zamboanga and Cotabato.

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Monday stressed that government forces are in complete control of Marawi City amid reports coming mostly from social media that half of the city is under the control of the Maute Group.

He said that initial information showed the presence of around 40 to 50 armed elements but the

“This is the time, Mr. President, to show us what you’ve been saying that you have a Maranao blood, and that, that you are sincere to correct the historical injustices committed against the Moros.

Marawi hospital exec dispells reports on Amai Pakpak Medical Center

ILIGAN City--A hospital official dispelled reports that Amai Pakpak Medical Center (APMC) in Marawi was taken over by the Maute Group as fighting between armed extremists and government troops continue over the weekend.

Dr. Amer Saber, APMC chief of hospital, said the report that the medical facility was overrun by members of the Maute Group was not true as he appealed to media outlets to verify any information before airing or publishing it.

Saber, however, has confirmed that a team of Maute

fighters came to the hospital and brought in an injured comrade at the start of the firefight on Tuesday afternoon.

He said two armed insurgents entered the facility asked them if they can bring in a patient for treatment.

Their companions, four or five of them and who were also armed, stayed outside the hospital gate and kept watch.

“They were very courteous and even greeted us with ‘Assalam Alaikum’ before asking us if they can bring in their patient,” Saber said.

The patient did not survive since he was already in critical condition when he

was admitted.

At about the same time, a police car arrived at the hospital premises. One of the police officers aboard the vehicle was Senior Inspector Freddie Solar, the intelligence unit chief of the Marawi City Police.

Saber said Solar brought his wife to APMC as she was suffering from appendicitis.

Based on the footages from the hospital’s CCTV camera, the policemen were taken hostage by the Maute fighters who were outside the APMC gates.

Of the police officers who were held at gunpoint, only Solar was shot. He was then

brought to inside the APMC but died shortly due to loss of blood, Saber said.

Solar was one of the casualties from the government forces fighting the Maute Group.

He said the Maute fighters left the hospital early Wednesday morning.

Saber said that was the only incident where gunshots were fired within the hospital premises.

During the time the insurgents were there, Saber said the hospital personnel did not feel they were harassed by the Maute fighters. “They even asked if they can pray [inside the hospital].”

Before the skirmishes escalated, Saber said he ordered some of the hospital staff, especially the Christian personnel, to move out of Marawi, for their safety. The Maute were said to be targeting Christian residents.

Even at the height of bombings and clashes last Friday, Saber said the APMC was spared from destruction. “[It was as if] we were in Syria, [with all] the bombing, shooting, firing,” was how Saber described the sound of bombs dropping during sorties conducted by the Philippine Air Force, coupled with the gun battle on the ground.

Marawi has been generally quiet, he said, calling the city a “ghost town.”

But Saber said the APMC is ready for any emergencies and they are expecting more patients when the military will conduct mapping and clearing operations.

He said the hospital is equipped and its doctors highly trained to perform surgeries and other medical procedures.

The Amai Pakpak Medical Center is a government-run 438-bed capacity hospital, with about 700 staff, 108 of them doctors with various specializations and 300-plus nurses.

AS of early Sunday evening, 18 government troopers have been killed and 64 others wounded in the ongoing clearing operations to dislodge Maute Group terrorists in Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur. This was confirmed by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla in a message to the PNA Monday morning.

Padilla said 15 military personnel were killed in action along with three Philippine National Police (PNP) operatives.

Reported wounded as of this posting are 61 soldiers and three policemen.

The AFP spokesperson added that Maute Group losses are placed at 61 with 42 of these being

confirmed through body count and the remaining 19 by eye witness reports.

Captured firearms are placed at 41 including 37 high-powered ones.

Civilians executed by the Maute Group are placed at 19, Padilla said, while placing those rescued at 390.

“Clearing of Marawi City of militants still and rescue of trapped civilians and recovery of civilian casualties and victims are the current focus of the ongoing operations,” he said.

Fighting started when government security forces tried to arrest Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon, a known ally of the group and designated ISIS leader, last May 23.

tional Center feted guests to a six-course molecular “degustacion” dinner.

A molecular dinner focuses on the experience of eating in its purest form. One begins with admiring the presentation of the dish as one would marvel at a painting or a photograph. The next experience would be savoring the flavors as intended by the chefs. Each dish is a pleasant amalgamation of tastes that blend in when it settles in the tongue.

Malcampo, the dishes were formulated by the students based on classical recipes. They were however instructed to infuse a Filipino twist in both presentation and ingredients. The sorbet was done the traditional way — and with a pinch of salt.

I mean, look at how many people, particularly the critics and political foes of President, had been reacting to his declaration of martial law in Mindanao. They say martial law is going to be abused, and will result in the desecration of the rule of law. Truly, this behavior is itself rebellion.

Many are even voicing out their concern that Duterte’s martial law will be the same as the martial law imposed

by President Marcos in the 1970s, with the insinuation being that Duterte is going to use his own version of martial law to perpetuate himself in power under a system of one-man rule.

This is very pathetic.

It is a rabidly and highly partisan, even if grossly unfounded, accusation, unmindful of the situation

ultimate objective does not pertain one whit to upholding the safety, well being, and the interest of our countrymen.

All they ever want to happen and are concerned about is to wrest power from him so they could take his place. Tr uly, these people deserve our collective condemnation and denunciation. If what they have been doing now have been done by them during the time of Chinese leader Mao Tse Tung, they have would been lined up against a wall already, and mowed down mercilessly.

and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. They are now moving around under the ISIS flag. But let us not debate about their being ISIS or not. This is not about propaganda, this is about terrorism, beastly violence and security. The kibitzers like the militant groups in Congress are opposing the declaration of martial law in Mindanao. It is plain idiocy. Outside the confines of congress, not a few are even begging President Duterte to impose martial law to quickly address lawlessness, corruption in the government bureaucracy and fast track the implementation of infrastructures long delayed by circuitous processes and TROs (temporary restraining orders).

If you repair to the social media, 99 percent wants martial rule not only for security but also to remedy what ails the bureaucracy. The people are tired of congressional debates among politicians of various ideological persuasions that prove to be one huge deterrent to development and progress. People are aghast how Courts can just cavalierly issue Temporary Restraining Orders that effectively halts implementation of important infrastructure projects. People are tired of listening to perjured witnesses and politicians who harbor them. People are getting weary of extortions carried out by police scala-

wags, smuggling syndicates, extortion in the guise of rebellion that have escalated along with the ceasefire.

Maute terrorists or by whatever name they sport took control of Butid town in Lanao del Sur but their celebration was brief as the military pounded their bases. That was months ago.

They must have regrouped and full-force crept into the Islamic City of Marawi.

This carries with it some worrisome implications that merit the imposition of martial law. Those who thought they knew better than the President had better shut up. I would not even venture a guess but the fact that government of Lanao are supportive of martial law and that Mindanao wanted it are enough reason why stricter rules had to be enforced. I say “stricter” because I do not see anything radical which are characteristic of martial law regime of Marcos.

My sympathies are for our Muslim brothers in Lanao. They are the victims of this act of terrorism.

While we Christians demonize Muslims as though they invented terrorism, the truth is worldwide where extremism and terrorism had taken place, the huge majority of the victims are Muslims.

Maranaos, who inhabit Lanao Provinces, are known for their knack for arts and their native culture. They

sell their arts which, despite the many influences of a hodgepodge of forms of arts, have survived and only enhanced with refinements and artistry. They are into commerce for which reason not a few of them are actively in business in Davao City selling their craft and other commodities that are distinctly of the people of the lake which they are. Because they found a peaceful place in Davao to engage in trade and commerce, then Mayor Rodrigo Duterte had seen to it that they took part in governance by designating their tribal leader as Deputy Mayor and another to represent the indigenous peoples in the city legislative body.

That is institutionalized in Davao City.

Despite the popular acceptance of the enforcement of martial rule, the political opposition and their media establishments are not sleeping and watching akimbo by the wayside.

Quickly they summoned the horrific specter of the Marcos martial regime in an effort to condemn Duterte.

But there is none of it. They fact that they rant and rage like loose cannons, eloquently argue against their misplaced claims. Martial law in Mindanao is for security. Period. (Mr. Jun Ledesma is a community journalist who writes from Davao City and comments from the perspective of a Mindanaoan)

of the militants on the ground, which included the freeing of over 100 prisoners in a jail which they consequently burned, could raise the number of terrorists in the area.

“Quite a number of those prisoners may have joined ranks with them because some of them were imprisoned for joining the group. We are also aware that there are sympathetic elements that may have been helping and may have also joined their ranks,” Padilla said.

In the meantime, the AFP assured that government security forces are doing everything to end the Marawi City situation at the soonest possible time.

“Although we do not have a timeline, we’re seeking to end this as soon as possible. Our ground commanders have assured that the end is almost there” Padilla said.

The trouble in Marawi erupted following violent clashes between government forces and members of the Maute terrorist group after security forces initiated operations to arrest Isnilon Hapilon, a wanted Abu Sayyaf terrorist now believed to be a leader of the Maute group.

several checkpoints within the city, burned down certain government and private facilities and inflicted casualties on the part of government forces.

Its members were even shown flying the ISIS flag in several areas of the city.

This prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to place Mindanao under martial law for a period of 60 days on the grounds of invasion and rebellion.

The declaration of martial law was done through Proclamation No. 216, which Duterte signed on May 23 while he was still in Russia.

According to official figures released by Malacañang, fighting in Marawi City have led to the killing of 61 Maute terrorists.

Meanwhile, the government have lost 18 of its forces — 15 military and 3 police personnel.

Dessert was a delightful combination of sorbet and freshly spun cotton candy done by a local “manong” and served right out of the cart!

Rounding off the fine dining ritual were the complimentary cigars and cognac. Though a practice not meant for the health conscious, the ritual is very much part of tradition.

A degustacion dinner may not be for everyone, given the Filipino’s predilection for “unli-rice” and hastily prepared oily meals but it is an experience one should try, at least once in this lifetime. (PNA)

Mayor Regencia issues advisory to Iliganons

ILIGAN CITY - Mayor Celso Regencia, this city, in an advisory issued to his constituents, stated that the violent attack by the Maute terrorists and Abu Sayyaf in Marawi City prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in Mindanao. Police Director PSSUPT. Leony Roy Ga told ABS-CBN News that even before the Marawi attack, they have been on high alert status since they consider Iligan City as a target of various terrorist groups. Police also set up random checkpoints in Iligan City. Authorities have asked the public to be vigilant and immediately report suspicious persons.

Mayor Regencia also strongly condemned the attack as acts of terror, and called on residents here to remain calm and stay in their respective homes or secure themselves in safe areas.

He appealed to all residents of this City to provide information on enemy locations and their movements so that authorities can swiftly implement this important security operation, and take necessary action immediately.

He also urged citizens in Iligan City to remain indoors, monitor media, and follow the advice of authorities.

He further said that the fierce fighting in Marawi City represents a direct threat to Iligan city thus he encouraged the people to avoid large crowds and gatherings, and remain vigilant at all times.

Navy arrest 14, seize illegal lumber in Maguindanao COTABATO CITY -- The Philippine Navy has arrested 14 persons for transporting illegally cut lumbers in the coast of Maguindanao Sunday, police reported on Monday.

IT was the biggest Strike a Pose so far as the annual Gil Macaibay III summer fashion workshop 2017 edition culminated last Sunday at the spacious Grand Caprice Restaurant ballroom last Sunday in Cagayan de Oro City.

More than a hundred enrolees of Strike a Pose 4, the two-day modelling crash course, filled the catwalk-laden floor of the restaurant in Gil Macaibay III designs as well as accessory shoes and bags from Spruce and eyewear from Specs.

The models were already pumped up in the workshop a week ago at 1A Express Hotel with inputs from supermodels Ann Casas and Jobo Roa as well as from Macaibay himself, the Prince of Haute Couture in this side of the country.

Macaibay has consistently organized the Strike a Pose yearly workshop now running for four consecutive years not just to help modelling aspirants in the city but also as a way to reach out to his favourite beneficiaries, the Balay Canossa Foundation and St. Joseph Home for the Aged.

DAVAO CITY — The government negotiating panel on Saturday afternoon (Manila time) pulled out from the fifth round-oftalks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) citing the “blatant and serious challenge” by the communist group to the leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a statement read by Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza in a press conference in Noordwijk Aan Zee, The Netherlands, the government panel cited several other reasons why it withdrew.

Davao Light in Mindanao suspended repaints and repairs in Brigada Eskwela 2017 DAVAO CIT Y – The permits to carry firearm outside the residence have been suspended owing to the implementation of martial law in Mindanao, a Philippine National Police (PNP) official here said Sunday.

Chief Inspector Andrea G. Dela Cerna, Police Regional Office (PRO-XI) spokesperson, said the suspension of permits to carry firearm is one of the “Do’s and Don’ts” covering the declaration of military rule in the island.

Dela Cerna also reminded that the writ of habeas corpus is also suspended, especially on cases pertaining to rebellion or terrorism.

Dela Cerna also said the right to form public assembly, such as pro-

test or rallies against the government, will be curtailed and the leaders or organizers of the groups will be arrested if caught making public nuisance.

The Effects of Stress on Health

In today’s generation, most of the people have forgotten how to maintain a healthy living. Aside from too much work, they are engaged with social media, internet games, and other non physical activities

as their way to relax and enjoy themselves from a day’s work. While eating healthy foods, sleeping on time and doing some exercise tend not given priorities. On the contrary, one of the obstructions to

be healthy and fit is the socalled “stress”. It is the most common infirmity people are suffering nowadays.

However, this condition has been ignored by many since then.

Some tend to forget that relaxation or resting is one of the very important ways to prevent stress. They thought that by simply enjoying themselves already means a good time rest since they feel emotionally light and relaxed.

However, true relaxation is more meaningful than that. It needs a total break from everything in order to become physically, emotionally, and spiritually rested. That is why more and more people are suffering and unconsciously getting weaker every day because they don’t really know how to do it properly.

When you think with heavy emotions, stress may follow. When you work a lot without any break, you can be stressed out. If you drink too much, eat too much, smoke a lot, you have a 100% chance to become a stressful man. It has a lot of negative effects in our health like sleepless nights, falling hair, depression, anxiety, and more.

Our body becomes weak, ill, and sometimes might stop functioning. In addition, stress makes our mind uneasy and vulnerable to mistakes.

Studies have found many health problems related to stress. It seems to worsen or increase the risk of conditions like obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, depression, gastrointestinal problems, and asthma. Yet, people

thought stress is as simple as a headache. What they don’t know, stress can lead to a lot more serious health conditions if not treated immediately.

Stress can make you weak, depressed, thin.

When you are stressed out, you tend to forget to eat on time, encourage negativity, become a loner, and admittedly, become sickly.

These are just examples of the effects of stress in our life. On the contrary, there is always a way to be healthy. You just have to focus and learn to prioritize your body’s health. Stop stressing yourself; do not go above and beyond your body’s limitation, manage your time, look after what you eat, exercise and most importantly, if you can’t handle it consult a doctor.

The next time stress is

consuming you, perform these following tips that can make you feel better.

Stop what you are doing then breathe deeply, focus on the moment, reframe the situation, and keep your problems in perspective.

These stress management techniques can help in the moment, but it would be best to embrace a long term stress management routine like performing regular exercise and proper diet.

In conclusion, we must always think healthy and be more aware of our body’s condition so that we can avoid stress and other illnesses that may come our way. It’s not bad to be more conscious with our health.

It pays to be conscientious given that we only have one life. And no amount can replace a healthy body and a bright future.

Another statement, from the Marawi Crisis Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy, also strongly condemns the violent attacks perpetrated by lawless

Any act inciting to terror in the hearts of defenseless civilians, the destruction of places of worship and properties, the murder of innocent men, women, and children irrespective of one’s faith are all forbidden and detestable acts according to Islam. Sowing terror through force and violence has always been an invalid means of attaining societal changes, and cannot be justified through faith or religion,” it said.

The Regional Darul Ifta of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, the most authoritative religious group in the region, also condemns in the highest degree the violent attack against the Islamic city of Marawi and its peace loving people.

“The murder of innocent civilians perpetrated by these lawless elements has nothing to do with Islam and should not be attributed to our faith. Sowing of terror in any form can not be justified in the name of religion. As such, the Regional Darul Ifta calls on the authorities to restore peace in Marawi and provide necessary assistance to the victims of this unislamic act. Following the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao, we appeal to the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police to adhere to the rule of law by protecting and preserving the sanctity of lives and properties of the people of Lanao, particularly in Marawi City,” it said.
