Misor tourism development measure hurdles House panel THE Committee on Tourism of the House of Representatives has recently approved a measure that aims to declare the province of Misamis Oriental as a tourism development area. Misamis Oriental Rep. Juliette Uy (2nd District), author of House Bill 2128, otherwise known as An Act Declaring the Province of Misamis Oriental as a Tourism Development Area and Appropriating Funds Therefor, profusely thanked Leyte Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez, Tourism Committee chair, for the panel’s approval of the measure. “In a nutshell, House Bill 2128 mandates the Department of Tourism (DOT) to accord priority development Misamis Oriental by declaring it a tourism development area. This means that the DOT, in coordination with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) and other concerned agencies of the

government, shall prepare the necessary tourism spot development plan, provide for their development and maintenance, including improvement and restoration of sites, in conformity with set standards, the construction of appropriate tourism facilities and infrastructure that will ensure the preservation of the ecological balance and natural beauty of the area,” Uy said. The bill is in consonance with the policy of the State to promote a tourism industry that is economically viable, ecologically sustainable, participative, culturally sensitive, and equitable for local communities. “It is our shared responsibility to promote and develop tourism as a major socio-economic to create employment and livelihood opportunities, generate income and revenues, and eventually spread the benefits of tourism nationally Misamis Oriental Rep. PPI elects new set of officers Marking its 53rd anniversary as the country’s premier association of newspapers, the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) elected a new board of trustees last May 23, at the opening of its two-day annual press forum in Manila.
