Northern M’anao police command on ‘full alert’ By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor
CAMP ALAGAR, Cagayan De Oro City – The entire regional police command in Northern Mindanao is now on full alert following the declaration of Martial Law and in response to the armed conflict in Marawi City, a senior police official said Thursday. Superintendent Lemuel B. Gonda, the regional police spokesperson, said that the Chief Supt. Agripino G. Javier, the police regional director, declared the full alert status amid the encounter between the government troopers and the local terror
group in Marawi City last Tuesday. The regional police command here urged the general public and motorists to cooperate during the conduct of checkpoint in strategic areas of the national highways and roads in Northern Mindanao being implemented by our PNP personnel to ensure the safety and security of the public, Javier said. Gonda said that the regional police is on top of the situation and is intensifying its target hardening intervention on all vital installations and security measures following the declaration of Martial Law.
He said that the police in cooperation with the military has also adopted various security measures to prevent the possible spill-over of the local conflict in Northern Mindanao. The regional police command has also set up checkpoints at entry and exit points in various parts of Northern Mindanao. The community is also advised to remain calm, vigilant and observant, and immediately report any suspicious persons, activities and unusual occurrences in public or any untoward incidents and crimes to the nearest police station, Gonda
said. He said that the regional police command would be continually vigilant in performing its duties to prevent any untoward incident. In the light of the imposition of Martial Law, the regional police command also calls the public to continuously support the efforts to maintain peace and help suppress the terrorists and lawless elements, Gonda said. He said that a close coordination is likewise being sustained by the Philippine Army, other Law Enforcement Agencies, Local Government Units and Tri-media.
troopers and the evacuees who were displaced in the armed conflict in Marawi City. In a short talk monitored from here at the army’s 2 nd Mechanized Brigade in Maria Cristina in Iligan City, Duterte confirmed the presence of the Iraq-Syria, Islamic State (ISIS) terror group in Mindanao, saying “they’re here” [ISIS]. Obviously to raise the morale of the state forces, Duterte said, that there is no reason that “we could not win because the military has modern weapons, air assets, and modern medical equipment.” “There is always a time for everything - a time for peace and a time for war. In the meantime, let us fight for the country. But just be careful,” Duterte said. He said that if given a chance, he would fight side by side with the government forces, but his body could no longer sustain the physical rigors. “I am here to say to you fight, I will pray for you, and answer everything,” See duterte, page 11
Oblivious of the conflict happening around them, children find time to play inside a gymnasium that has been converted into an evacuation center in Fuentes, Iligan City on Thursday (25 May 2027). Many residents of neighboring Marawi City have fled their homes, afraid they will be hit in the crossfire in the fighting between government soldiers and the Maute Group.
