Duterte signs EO on Smoking Ban MANILA — Presidente Rodrigo Duterte signed on Thursday the executive order banning smoking in public places. “He signed it May 16 but we got [a] copy only today,” Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial said in a text message to Rappler on Thursday, May 18.

PRRD graces opening of widened bridge in DavNor By Jeanevive Abangan

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte -- President Rodrigo Duterte graces the opening of the widened Governor Miranda Bridge II that crosses through Tagum Liboganon River at the boundary of the municipality of Carmen and the city of Tagum. The Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) has seen the need to expand the Governor Miranda Bridge 10 years after it was built in 2004. In a briefer, DPWH said that the bridge now has higher elevation “designed to protect the travelling public from flooding”. Aside from facilitating safe travel when Tagum Liboganon overflows, the widened bridge is seen to provide ease of traffic flow of large buses, utility and private vehicles ply north to Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley and even much farther north towards Caraga Region. KMP lauds return of farmers to Lapanday plantation DAVAO CITY -- The peasant group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) lauded the peaceful return Thursday of farmers into their lands inside the Lapanday plantation in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. About 5,000 members of the Madaum Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries, Inc. Army Battalion from Sulu redeployed to Davao DAVAO CITY -- The 16th Infantry Battalion has been deployed to Davao City from Jolo, Sulu. The 400-strong battalion was sent to the city to help augment security measures against threats to peace and security. They will reinforce the Task Force Davao in securing the peripheries of the sprawling city. “We are thankful for the added security.” Mayor Sara Duterte said of the deployment. Last April 29, New People’s Army attack several facilities of private businesses in Davao City and Panabo. One of the targets was the box manufacturing plant of the banana company Lapanday. Until now the nation of Israel is observing these feasts strictly for 3,500 years already. Our Almighty Creator commanded to observe the feasts from generation to generation. By this, we will know the heart of God that He loves to see His people to remember the good things He has done towards them. Therefore God is not against feasts and celebrations in honor of Him. Think a minute… A recent survey of questions was given to thousands of people. Their names were not known or recorded so they would answer the questions honestly. Out of all these people, 91% said they regularly tell lies. Half of them call in to their jobs and say they’re sick when they’re not sick at all. In fact, over half of all stealing from stores and businesses is done by their own employees. Another question was this: “What are you willing to do for $10 million?” 25% of the people said they would leave their mate and children, and 7% said they

would murder a stranger for $10 million. So in a crowd of 1000 people, there are 70 people who would kill you for $10 million. Think about it! I asked myself: How much like those average citizens am I? Have I lied to family or friends? Stolen from my workplace? Have I cheated in school or on my taxes? Broken any of my promises? If I was guaranteed I could get away with anything I wanted, what would I do? What is my conscience, self-respect, and good character worth? A famous writer said: “Honesty is like art: you

have to draw the line somewhere.” But the problem is who draws the line? Me by myself? My circumstances and situation? You see, since all we humans have rebelled and chosen to live our own way, lying, cheating and stealing now come rather naturally to us. We do whatever it takes to get what we want. And if we don’t, most people think we’re weak and foolish! That’s actually how confused we’ve become. It all starts with the little dishonest things we say and do regularly. We think it’s just a little white lie or small thing we stole. But soon, being dishonest becomes our

Eight boys and eight girls named newest All-Stars of Jr. NBA Philippines 2017 presented by Alaska Youth players from the Regional Selection Camp in Metro Manila shined the brightest among 72 boys and girls in the National Training Camp of Jr. NBA Philippines 2017 presented by Alaska held at the Don Bosco Technical Institute May 12-13 and at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall on May 14, attended by Orlando Magic guard Elfrid Payton and former WNBA All-Star Sue Wicks. Words Can Make or Break There are some things you simply say at work without thinking that they already offended other people. These phrases carry special power; they have uncanny abilities to make or break ones feelings. Isaac Newton once said, “Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy.” Being tactful is just that — having the ability to clearly communicate your message while being sensitive to those around you and not unintentionally offending anyone. Being tactful does not mean hiding what you really feel; it just means presenting your ideas in a way that would make them the most appealing and inoffensive. If you want to know how to say things without hurting other persons’ feelings, then you should read this. Think before you speak. Allow yourself a pause to consider how your words could be perceived, and to prevent yourself from making hasty comments. You may have an immediate gut reaction to something your boss or friend is saying, but take a moment to gather your thoughts before you come right out and say what you want to say. Ask yourself if it’s the best time to present your ideas, if you should spend some time finding a better way to say what you want to say, and if people will be receptive to your comments right then. Deflect negative com-

ments. If people are making negative comments around you, you should avoid getting wrapped up in them if you want to be tactful. This is especially true if you’re in the workplace and don’t want to be part of the office politics. There are several ways in which you can deflect negative comments and take the high road in testy situations. Here are some ways to do it: Start with a positive comment before giving negative feedback. If you have to give negative feedback to someone, whether it’s a coworker or your best friend, you should couch it in a way that makes the person the most receptive. This doesn’t mean you should lie to the person if things aren’t going well, but that you should start off with something positive so the person sees that you care about him or her. Here are some ways to do it: Choose your words carefully. When it comes to being tactful, one of the most important things to keep in mind is that you should be aware of the words you use to express your ideas. You can still say what you want to say without offending people or coming off mean or like a know-it-all. When you’re getting ready to state an opinion, ask yourself if the words you’re using are biased, hurtful, patronizing, or just all wrong for the occasion. Then, find the words that

will help further your ideas without offending anyone. Choose your timing carefully. When it comes to being tactful, having great timing is half the battle. You may have something perfectly nice to say, which can ruin a social situation if you say it at the wrong time, and can lead to hurt feelings without you meaning to do any harm. Before you make a comment, ask yourself if this is the best time to make the comment, and if everyone there will be receptive to it. Ask yourself if it would be better to wait to get a more positive response, even if you’re dying to say what you want to say. Decline invitations politely. If someone asks you to do something, you should find a way to politely decline it. You should take the time to say how much you would like to do it and then give a brief explanation or apology about not being able to do it. This will still get the same message across, but you won’t offend anyone in the process. Don’t reveal too much personal information to people you don’t know very well. Telling people you don’t know well all your business will only make them uncomfortable and won’t lead to any new friendships; have tact and be aware of when people would like to hear more and when enough is enough. “The tongue has no bones, but it is strong enough to break a heart, So be careful with your words.”

When it comes to recruiting the best teacher to be the students’ model, “cash or K.A.S.H.” should be one of the first things that come to mind for most appointing officers or ranking committees. After all, if you can’t pay a competitive salary, how can you ever expect to recruit and retain the best employees? And while compensation certainly plays a role in the hiring process, employers would be wise to think about “KASH”, too. KASH stands for Knowledge, Attitude, Skills and Habits – four key elements to consider when evaluating a applicants. It’s pretty easy to get a good overview of a prospective hire’s knowledge and skills from their resume and interviews. However, when we focus too much on knowledge and skills, we lose sight of attitude and habit – the two biggest predictors of a newly hired employee. Considering the research, it shows that when newly hired teacher fails, 89% fail for attitude reason. Only 11% of new hires fail because they lack a skill. Technical skills are certainly important, but they’re also much easier to assess. Skill proficiency tests can’t measure a newly hired teacher’s openness to feedback, for

example, or willingness to collaborate positively with co-teachers. Attitude Shapes Soft Skills. We can change skill levels in training, but we can’t change attitude. What exactly do I mean by “attitude”? Consider this potential applicant recently considered as a potential classroom teacher: On written examination, the potential applicant can tick all the boxes for experience, trainings attended and intelligence but in practice, if this hire has an authoritarian, hard-driving leadership style and is hired into a company where collaboration and camaraderie are paramount, there’s a clear attitude dissonance that could lead to friction and poor job performance. Habits Matter, too. Great habits drive great performance. In The 21st century kind of students we have, technical aptitude is easy to come by. What’s much harder to find, however, is an applicant, a teacher with the right attitude and habits for your department of education. Unfortunately, even as the focus on hiring has shifted away from technical proficiency and towards soft skills like “coachability”, the hiring process has not always kept up.

Renewable energy now being used by Nestle factory N

estle Philippines, Inc. is now using renewable energy to power the operations of its manufacturing facility in Lipa, Batangas. Starting February this year, the Nestle factory has switched to using Cleanergy from the MakBan Geothermal Power Plant of AboitizPower subsidiary, AP Renewables, Inc. (APRI). Nestle Philippines Technical Director Peter Winter thanked AboitizPower for making it possible for Nestle to use renewable energy to fuel its Lipa Factory operations. “The partnership between AboitizPower and Nestle Philippines is a testament to the shared commitment of both companies to continually look for better and sustainable solutions to reduce their carbon footprint and protect the
