During the visit, Chinese businessmen also expressed their earnest intention to invest in the Philippines, particularly in providing disaster resistant and low cost housing projects. Token of goodwill As token of goodwill and understanding, the Chinese business leaders gifted Duterte of traditonal Chinese painting, which is described as the Auspicious Seas of Cloud by Chinese famous painter, Zhu Shiming; a Chinese Rectangle Ding; and sketch image of Mrs. Soledad Roa Duterte, which made the presumptive president emotional.
The Chinese business group and the CMP group was also led by Siony Sia. This week, the parties is expected to ink a contract for the almost 2,000 units of houses for the Yolanda survivors of Tacloban, through the National Program Community Mortgage Program of SHFC. The housing project for the Typhoon Yolanda survivors has been delayed for three years now. Presumptive president Duterte has reportedly approved of the benevolence, so that the victims will finally get a bright future they have been waiting for, a source said.
Apart from this, the visitors also gifted Duterte with the token called “The spirit of No Boundaries” to help him in eliminating poverty, and the symbol of people’s resignation to life and their spirit of endurance. The CMP group was led by President of the Homeowners Association in Tacloban, Capt.Cesar Advincula. The project is a social responsibility program of the Future Home to the people of the Philippines “to replicate the good heart of the presumptive president Duterte.” Future Home is expected to introduce new
technology, called ALC and steel structures, a revolution in the housing industry that is wind, fire and earthquake resistance that
can stand super typhoon, but at the same time comfortable to live in. The Chinese business leaders also urged their
colleagues back home to support the new Philippine President in his effort to improve the lives of the Filipino people.

Pinay teen advocates speak out for girls’ rights in Denmark CAGAYAN de Oro City -- Two Filipina youth advocates from Zamboanga City in Mindanao, southern Philippines are joining Plan International at the 4th Women Deliver Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, to help drive discussions and solutions needed to deliver the promises the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have made to girls, particularly those in conflict areas who are most vulnerable. Rosie, 19, and Fahada, 16, will speak about their advocacies on girls’ rights to world leaders and leading organizations with girls’ and women’s rights programmes. Both have first hand experiences on armed conflict, including suspension of classes for several months during the Zamboanga siege in 2013. Following a 12-month Plan International-led empowerment programme, equipping girls as advocates to embed girls’ rights within the SDGs, Rosie and Fahada were chosen to represent their peers at Women Deliver, which takes places from May 16-19.
Rosie campaigns on issues such as girls’ rights, education in emergencies, teenage pregnancy, and violence. “In areas where there is armed conflict, it is hard for young girls to go to school. How can they go to school when they don’t feel safe? When their school has been bombed or get attacked either on their way to school or going home? The peace-building process has to be in place for these areas, such as ours, for us not to be afraid to go to school,” Rosie says. During the Zamboanga siege, Rosie’s house became an evacuation center. “We heard the explosions and we all just dropped on the ground,” she says. Rosie’s campaign work took her to the World Education Forum (WEF) in Korea last year, where she spoke to key global influencers such as UN special adviser Amina Mohammed and Alice Albright, CEO of the Global Partnership for Education, about the importance of education for all children. Whoever is propagating the phrase “presumptive President” is a nincompoop on the loose. For all intents and purposes, there is no such thing as “presumptive President.” Thus, the propagation of the phrase “presumptive President” in addressing the Presidentelect Rodrigo Duterte, is a calculated propaganda that tends to becloud the credibility of the President-elect. By definition, Meriam Webster said “presumptive” means a belief that something is true even though it has not been proved.” Obviously, the phrase “presumptive President” is a definition of doubt Who doubt the election of Duterte to the country’s high office, but the incumbent administration? Of course, the people would always point to the administration of “inventing” phrases that would otherwise discredit the elected President. Perhaps, the adoption of the phrase “presumptive President” is based on the notion that Duterte has yet to be proclaimed President. None sense! Whether the use of “presumptive President” is done without malice, particularly by television news readers (not reporters), the listeners,
especially those who have backgrounds in the English language could only scoff. Actually, the Filipinos have the propensity of mangling and defacing the English language. While the character is often acceptable, albeit ridiculous, the English speaking world scornfully loved the Filipino ingenuity at times. For instance, the Filipino journalists have the penchant of using the word “cop” in describing a police officer. While “cop” refers to a police officer, its connotation in the English world carries an ill-refute character. The formal English newspapers refer “cop” to a “rogue” police officer. Rogue means rascal, scalawag. A former colleague who became a Dean of Mass Communication in a lo-

and even try to improve on them. Best if you can give credit where credit is due. Third, do the same with your political appointees. If you look close enough, there are “gems” in the outgoing crop of cabinet and subcabinet officials. Arman Luistro, if I may mention one. Why fix the clock when it ain’t broken? You may not have to look very far in scouting for your cabinet appointees. Career undersecretaries would know their departments inside out. They do not need a learning curve. They are sure to hit the ground running. But give them a one year “probationary” period to prove that you have not made a mistake in appointing them. In choosing your appointees, keep in mind that you need implementors more than you need analysts and planners. There are already enough good plans in place. Give preference to those who don’t intend to seek elective positions. Danger

cal school argued that the “Filipino journalists adopt its own journalistic English lingo.” This means, that the word “cop” is acceptable to both the good and the bad men in uniform. The CYNOSURE and the international community vehemently disagree. For all intent and purposes, there should be a delineation between a good police officer and a rogue police officer. The word cop, which defines the rogue police officer is simply appropriate. Of course, it is very appropriate to call a refine law enforcer as “police officer.” Thus, one could not adopt the phrase “presumptive President” as an invention of the creative Filipino journalist. Rather the term is invented by the losers in the recent Presidential fracas. It is unfortunate that the media is used to spread a language that does not conform the taste of the native speakers. Certainly, the Filipino journalist is not a native English speaker. However, using an inappropriate language would make us appear like the “Malaprop” English professor. Unsolicited advice for President-Elect Duterte
If I am discontent, I get upset easily, but if I choose to be content no matter what is going on, then my emotions remain balance. Our thoughts have a lot to do with our moods. Some thoughts improves moods and increase our level of contentment, and others send our moods spiraling downward, making us unhappy and discontent. We can think ourselves happy, and we can think ourselves sad! How we talk to ourselves also affects our emotions, so if we yalk to ourselves properly, we can stay content

Survival Skill
Think a minute… It’s truly amazing how the Jewish people have survived after thousands of years of being slaves, persecuted, and even attempted genocide when Hitler’s Nazi’s murdered 6 million Jews! That’s why in 1934, Germany was the wrong place to be a Jew. When Hitler’s teenage gangs took over his village the little Jewish boy, Heinz, was just 11 years old. Heinz’s parents taught their children how important it was to learn selfcontrol. With the Nazi gangs terrorizing their village on the streets daily, Heinz’s parents knew that just one moment of losing control of their anger against their Nazi rulers could mean the death of their family. So Heinz learned to stay out of their way, sometimes crossing the street or taking a different road home. But one day, young Heinz was finally cornered by one of Hitler’s bullies. For the first time, Heinz was forced to talk to a Nazi youth. But by staying calm and carefully choosing his words, Heinz surprised even himself when he talked his way out of trouble and convinced this bully not to hurt him but to let him go. That day, Heinz discovered his survival skill of talking and reasoning with others. It was a major turning point that changed his life—and later changed the world. After a few years, Heinz’s family escaped from Germany and moved to America. But Heinz never forgot how to talk with people and help bring peace between enemies. You see, that 11-year-old boy who had negotiated his first peace settlement with a Nazi bully, later became one of the greatest ambassadors of peace in the world. You’ve probably heard of him… not as Heinz…but by his American name: Henry Kissinger, the former U. S. Secretary of State. Think a Minute…

‘Trending’ man-to-man sex cause of rising HIV-AIDS cases in Zambo - DOH By Dominic I. Sanchez of PIA-9
ZAMBOANGA City -- An emerging trend attributed to the rise in HIV-AIDS cases worldwide is that recently, even committed male partners of women have also engaged in sexual intercourse with other men. Clarisa Jauculan-Jose of the Department of Health (DOH) here explained recently that male to male sex
is one of the causes of the rise of cases of HIV-AIDS, and the city is not exempted. “For January to March alone this year, we have 14 new cases with 1 recorded death,” Jose shared. In 2015, 5 deaths due to HIV-AIDS were recorded, 4 deaths in 2014 and 7 deaths in 2013. The figures account for both male and female, with majority being male. Jose illustrated that from 1995-2009, 195 cases were
recorded in the locality. About 177 of the total are men. “Mucho de este maga bisexual o maga homosexual,” Jose explained. (Many of these cases are of bisexuals or homosexuals.) “It is a global trend, and the number one reason is because of anal sex.” According to the official, people nowadays tend to “experiment” with sex, including anal sex. “Si ta
In a collaboration meeting held recently, ENGAGE and IFI-Child Fund Philippines invited and presented to other government agencies and NGOs the project, “In-kind grant to strengthen the collaboration between LGU and CSO to build capacity of families in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.” Margarita Auxtero, IFIChild Fund Project Coordinator said that the project intends to train selected families in the barangays so they in turn train other families in the community
on disaster preparedness. “One of the most effective ways to prepare and capacitate the barangay local government units (BLGUs) on disaster preparedness and response is to introduce disaster risk reduction, mitigation, and management at the family level,” Auxtero explained. IFI proposed to support the BLGUs by conducting family-based vulnerability mapping and guide the families develop a family-based disaster preparedness plan. The project will run for

Breakfast and schooling By TEODORO P. CASINABE JR. ESP I Tikalaan Central Elementary School Tikalaan, Talakag, Bukidnon
CHILDREN who eat a healthy breakfast before starting the school day achieve higher academic results than pupils who do not, according to a study. Public health experts at Cardiff who carried out the research say their findings improve the strongest evidence yet of a direct and positive link between eating breakfast and educational attainment. Their report suggests
that the odds of achieving an above-average score in tests at the age of 11 were up to twice as high as pupils who ate breakfast, compared with those who did not. There is already substantial research into the links between eating breakfast and measures of concentration and focus, this is the first to show a meaningful link between eating breakfast and concrete measures of academic achievement.
The Cardiff study, which tracked 5,000 nine- to 11-year-olds from more than 100 schools, adds to a growing body of evidence showing that effective interventions to improve pupils’ health is likely to improve their academic performance. While breakfast consumption has been consistently associated with general health outcomes and acute measures of concentration and cognitive function, evidence regarding links to concrete educational outcomes has until now been unclear.
KCES Implements Brigada Eskwela By Mrs. Jocelyn B. Paradiang, School Principal II Kitaotao Central Elementary School Kitaotao, Bukidnon
The school is an institution held responsible in molding the youth into a responsible and productive individual in the society. They are crafted into better persons, thoroughly guided by good values which will be brought throughout their lives. While government is tasked to provide free and quality education to every Filipino child and youth, the community is an important stakeholder in their education. With this, it is necessary to prepare the school before the formal start of classes. On April 23, the Department of Education disseminated DepEd Memorandum No. 41, Series of 2015, which directed the Implementation of BRIGADA ESKWELA also known as the National Schools Maintenance Week from May 18-23, with the theme, “Tayo Para sa Kalinisan, Kaligtasan at Kahandaan ng ating mga Paaralan”. This week-long event encouraged stakeholders and volunteers to give out their time, effort, and even donate materials, which could be used for minor repairs and building. As an addressee of the aforesaid DepEd Memorandum, Kitaotao Central Elementary school successfully carried out Brigada Eskwela. School officials and faculty moved to scout more volunteers and donors of materials needed and labor support for the activity. Tasks were designated to faculty members. Solicitation and invitation letters were printed and distributed to different stakeholders to make the
Brigada successful. Dipolog Rural Bank, One Network Bank, Philippine Guardians Brotherhood (PGBI), Inc. Barangay Officials, Religious Sector and some private individuals donated cash and some in the form of materials needed. Most of all, KCES Brigada Eskwela was not made possible without the parents, 4Ps grantees, and volunteers. With their unselfish cooperation and support this activity turned out to be a successful one. Kick-off ceremony opens with a motorcade around the town at 8:00 in the morning and then the launching program was held at KCES Ground to welcome and inspire the participants. No less than 40 parents participated excluding volunteers from several civic and nongovernmental organizations. During the Program Launching around key persons inspired the crowd in the pursuit of the brigade. Barangay Chairman Rey M. Ochigue gave words of welcome. Schools District Supervisor Elpidio Y. Lomarda emphasized the activity’s purpose. The Municipal Vice Mayor gave inspirational talk. Barangay EdCom Chairman Alfredo Salazar and GPTA President Vilma Margaja shared a few words of thanks and welcome the participants. Then Brigada Eskwela proper starts immediately. Day 1 person in attendance were able to perform initial cleanings around the school. They swept the floors of classrooms as well as the grounds outside the buildings.
Day 2 almost 50 parents attended, grasses uprooted, repaired and rehabilitated the garden, and swept the frontage and back part of the school building. Stakeholder requested Electricians, inspected and repaired the Electric Wirings. The Water System was also inspected and the damages were repaired. Aside from the parents, volunteers from PGBI and BSPO also rendered their services. Day 3 major activities were: repairing of plots, rehabilitation of hanging plants, creation of plant boxes for vegetables, and making of garbage boxes, no less than 40 parents again participated. Religious sectors and retirees were present and also help. Day 4 activities were mainly anchored on taking care of plants. At least 40 parents performed weeding, plowing, rehabilitation of garden plots in preparation before use during classes. Used tires were utilized to make plant boxes. The BFP, PNP, AFP and Purok Officials were present and they also helped. Day 5 Brigada Eskwela focus on painting of rooms and room facilities, Fences and plants boxes were also painted to complete the beautification. Present Electricians check electrical wirings. Then a short program to formally close Brigada Eskwela to thank the parent’s stakeholders and volunteers participated in the week-long activity. Teachers recognized their deep of gratitude to the aforementioned people for without them; Brigada Eskwela in KCES wouldn’t be possible.

KCES INSTILS SIGNIFICANCE OF SCHOOL BASED IMMUNIZATION By Mrs. Jocelyn B. Paradiang, School Principal II Kitaotao Central Elementary School Kitaotao, Bukidnon
“BAKUNA PARA SA KABATAAN, PROTEKSIYON SA KINABUKASAN” In response to the Division Memorandum no. 122, 2015, which is the expanded program on immunization by the department of Health, Kitaotao Central Elementary School teachers and staff were glad knowing and in having this nationwide activity to help
keep our schoolchildren healthy. Winslow, C.E.A. said that “Public health is an art of preventing diseases, promoting health through prolonging life, organizing efforts and informing choices of society, organizat ions, public and private communities and individuals. That is why, DepEd and DILG work hand in hand for

the young’s welfare. They don’t let the flameless candles spread and the total darkness among the school children-the hope of tomorrow, the inspiration and the torch that would light and guide those who are lost in the way of life- they are the future leaders of society. Imagine a countr y ruled by frail, hopeless, and inactive leaders? It seems that the world suffers an incurable disease where life is boring and meaningless. That’s why, leaders of today should prepare and help the young to be free from harm and diseases by having this expanded
immunization program. Children of today should be properly cared, nurtured and protected at an early stage of their lives. They must be given DTMR (diphtheria, Tetanus, Measles and Rubella) vaccines to help them grow healthy. Prior to Immunization Day, the School Principal, Mrs. Jocelyn B. Paradiang sent a letter to Grade 1 parents through Grade 1 Teachers – Mrs. Maricar S. Abunda, Mrs. Vilma T. Agcopra, Mrs. Neddie R. Palmares, and Mrs. Lucy B. Namocot informing them about the schoolbased immunization to their children.
On August 10, 2015, it’s the Immunization Day. Parents with their sons and daughters arrived in school early; they walked in pairs or even in groups. It is good sign of responding and giving full support to the program. This also shows a positive outlook where everybody works together for our children’s health as everybody’s responsibility. The day’s activity starts with an opening program were Health personnel headed by Dra. Ramona Santiago and Mrs. Alma Cabudoy, School Principal –Mrs. Jocelyn Paradiang and District Nurse Mrs. Liza C. Brigada Eskwela may sound too familiar or maybe an overused tagline in schools. It may have contributed already a huge impact in various schools in the entire country. Yet, doubts and misconceptions still lingers at the back of the minds of a parent, a student, or a community folk of its real essence as a preenrolment activity every opening of classes. The Brigada Eskwela is an annual program of the Department of Education (DepED Order 24., s. 2008, Appendix A) which was launched on May 2003 and also known as National Schools Maintenance Week. It promotes and sustains the spirit of volunteerism among Filipinos, known as bayanihan, in the modern-day setting in schools. Expectedly conducted during the last week of May, it is a convergence of parents, students, and the community people and working together to prepare public schools for the opening of classes. During this 6-day event, participants do volunteer works such as masonry, plumbing, electrical, gardening, painting, and cleaning. For this school year, the event will be observed in all schools nationwide on May 30 to June 4, 2016. It is sad to note that participation to the Brigada Eskwela is somewhat limited only to parents who wish to enrol their children to a particular school. Other community sectors such as the AFP, PNP, civic organizations, alumni associations, government officials, and various organizations are yet to be sent with invitations to participate. Probably, something has to be improved in terms of advocacy campaigns and linkages of schools with other agencies. It would be a happy thought if the meeting of community people during Brigada Eskwela is due to a free will to offer support and not because of the invitation. Supposedly, everyone could just visit a school and do volunteer
work. Well, looking forward for this to happen, someday. Brigada Eskwela is not about donating a sum of money in exchange of volunteer service. It is extending physical service or manual work. At some point, teachers are placed in a critical situation for accepting monetary contributions from parents who insist to donate money instead of doing manual work. Maybe, such idea created a vivid picture from the parents’ imagination since in some or in most cases, teachers had been observed of soliciting for other forms of support such as paints, nails, snacks, lumber, electrical materials, rugs, brooms, floor wax and more. Again, in Brigada Eskwela, everyone is welcome to manifest their spirit of generosity for the good of the schoolchildren. Well, over again, looking forward for this to happen, someday. Brigada Eskwela, as an avenue to demonstrate the spirit of volunteerism, is not supposed to connote of being a burden among the teachers. Yet, as the month of May approaches, teachers start to create feelings of discomfort most especially upon receipt of solicitation letters (as they are never used to do soliciting) and the demand to exhaust all efforts to be able to meet the criteria of becoming the best implementer. Such feelings are never beyond the school head’s eyes and never an intention to put them under pressure. Some school heads might even have initiatives to recognize the teachers’ efforts. At some point, ignoring such behaviour could be one of the ways to uncover and develop their intrapersonal potentials and community linkages. Well, of course and cannot be denied, the recognition it brings. But, despite of the demands of the Brigada Eskwela, it is nice to see the teachers in schools throughout the country wearing a sweet smile and extending their two hands in welcome of the volunteers every third week of May.
Present
A7 message during the program. They clearly and thoroughly explained the goals, the importance and the advantages of vaccination/immunization. They stressed how the government helped and apportioned a budget for the conduct and implementation of the program. To them, money does not count much, what matters most is a nationwide protection and prevention. After which, is the vaccination done by section. Lined up, one by one, one comes one goes, until no one is left unimmunized/ unvaccinated. It’s indeed a fruitful and successful activity. Kudos to all and have a healthy future.

Dengue cases escalating, says DOH CAGAYAN de Oro City -- Department of Health (DOH) bared an increase of dengue cases in northern Mindanao. As of January to May 9 this year, a total of 4,372 cases of dengue were already recorded from different disease reporting unit region wide which is 57 percent higher when compared to the same period last year. The Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit (RESDRU) of Department of Health Region10 (DOH-10) bared this during the 2nd Quarterly Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (EREID) Inter-Agency Task Force meeting held recently in Cagayan de Oro. The province of Bukidnon recorded 1, 231 dengue cases with five deaths, 64 percent higher than last year’s record and has the highest number among all the provinces in Region 10. Misamis Oriental recorded the 2nd highest number posting 1,091 dengue cases with five deaths and 45 percent increase over the same period last year. Meanwhile, Misamis Occidental has 503 dengue cases from 258; Lanao del Norte has
404 from 134; Gingoog City has 328 from 108; Ozamiz City has 194 from 58, and Camiguin has 141 from 122. For the cities, Cagayan de Oro is on top with 619 reported cases from 633 cases for the same period last year and Iligan City has 383 from 129. John Carlo Garcia of RESDRU noted that mosquitoes can grew rapidly in hot weather which explained the rise in observe cases despite the dry spell. “Mosquitoes’ maturity tripled because of the very hot temperature that the region is presently experiencing. We were surprised that the larvae stored in our office for study have grown rapidly and were flying in less than 24 hours,” Garcia said. With this, the EREID InterAgency Task Force considered drafting a resolution calling the review of Ovicidal/Larvicidal (OL) trap harvest placed in schools as well as to plan out control measures based on a five-year trend. DOH urges the public to keep their surrounding clean, the easiest way to fight dengue, said Garcia. (Marwellen Agcopra/ JCV/PIA10)

Live as Christ The Gospel of Jesus Christ (May19, 2016-Thursday) Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two [women shall be] grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, which if the good man of the house had known in what watch the thief would come,
he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up: Do not waste your time because life is too short. Each day, you start with a full bank account—an account filled with time. And each day, you spend all 24 hours of it. One of the smartest investments you can make is to stop and take stock: You’re paying out a lot of hours. What are you gaining
in exchange? Paul understood the value of time—and how to spend it. In Romans 13, he admonishes us to awake out of sleep—because we know the time! As urgently as he lived his life, Paul’s words are even more poignant today, when time is so short before the return of Jesus Christ! The key to redeeming our time for something of real value is to live as Christ lived in these

urgent days. Yet there is a reason why that simple principle is so hard to live by. Satan is doing everything he can to tempt you to nickel-and- dime your life away—or worse. He knows that you cannot serve both God and mammon” Matthew 6:24, and that a friend of the world cannot be a friend of God” James 4:4. So he wants to make you spend your time on anything but
God. Use your time wisely. You are born to complete a certain mission in life. Do it because it will become your passport to eternal life. of God and Jesus death on the cross can change the lives of wicked and sinful men. It is the power of God. The result of the gospel is righteousness in the lives of men”, Dr. Jill Boyonas says, Church Multiplication Coalition president and core leader of Jesus For All Nations based in Cebu City. “We are promoting peace and unity among all religions so that we can serve the poor and needy. Sometimes religion is acting like politics that creates division among the people and hinders prosperity and supply to the dying masses, we need to accept each other and work together as fellow believer of God and the bible”, a message from Dr. Fritzboy Cobrado, the Founder and President of Love Asia Missions Partner Foundation Intl., one of the prime mover of the organization. This historic event this year is participated by different Bishops, Pastors, leaders and church workers from all over the Philippines and some pastors and missionaries from Singapore, Cambodia, Africa and America. 1988 but infighting among agrarian reform cooperatives on the lease of the palm oil lands from the multinational companies caused confusion that the benefits did not trickle down to the still impoverished former farm workers-beneficiaries. These agrarian reform palm oil lands considered as bigger than Hacienda Luisita served as a model when Republic Act 6657 or the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law was enacted in June 10, 1988 that no less than the late former president Corazon Aquino personally led the turnover rites several months later in Cagayan de Oro City. To address this problem, the Department of Agrarian Reform in this province started conducting on May 17 the validation and redocumentation these lands once separately operated by National Development Company-Guthrie Estate, Inc (NGEI) and NDCGuthrie Plantations Inc. (NGPI).
DAR of f icials were prompted to conduct the comprehensive revalidation of agrarian reform beneficiaries after they found out that the cooperatives which have already split into six groups because of differences have even recruited more new members which could not be possibly qualified as beneficiaries. “We need to firm up first the list of original ARBs to determine the real beneficiaries,” said Julita Ragandang, DAR Caraga regional director. She said over the years the ARB cooperatives take in new members that benefitted from the proceeds of land rental payments but were not actually ARBs. Because of infighting among cooperative leaders, many of the original ARBs most are already senior citizens were expelled that resulted to the creation of splinter cooperative groups, three of them not yet registered with the Cooperative Development Authority. Genalyn Luis, DAR provincial information officer, said cooperative officials were told during a stakeholders’ forum to refrain from further expelling members after the revalidation of the documents of original ARBs shall be completed on June 30. DAR is allocating some P21 million fund for the survey of the wide tracts of idle palm oil lands to segregate it to the different ARB cooperatives after the revalidation process. Among the elderly ARBs who came to DAR provincial office during the first day of validation of documents was 65-year-old Godofredo Mariquit, a retired plantation harvester who worked in the company for 10 years. Mariquit said there are more than a hundred others of his age who are original ARBs that belong to NGEI ARB Multi-Purpose Cooperative under their chairman Kim Ronquillo whose group fought for unfair lease rental by the company now operated by Filipinas Palm Oil Plantation, Inc. cost them their millions of pesos fund frozen at the bank. she highlighted the barriers girls face when trying to access education. “Education is important for us living in conflict areas. It helps us rise above the situation and secure a better future for ourselves and our future children. That is the only way development can be achieved in our communities,” Rosie says. Aside from issues on education in emergencies, both also share that injustice is happening in their community. “Girls are abused in many ways – I have friends who are victims of sexual violence. Now, they are teenage mothers,” Fahada says. As a Plan International youth advocate, Fahada is keen to raise awareness about violence, inequality, and barriers to education. Fahada isn’t afraid to speak up for girls’ rights, having travelled to last year’s UN General Assembly, a historic moment that saw the launch of the SDGs. During the assembly, Fahada met UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, singer Shakira, Pakistani activist for female education Malala, and fellow girl advocates. She even shared a panel with Michelle Obama to launch the First Lady’s 62 Million Girls education campaign. Since returning to the Philippines, Fahada is still sharing her experiences at school and through local organizations - and she’s determined to speak up for girls’ rights once again. “Because of teenage pregnancy, girls are losing their passion in education. And as an advocate, I want to serve as an inspiration and be the voice of the girls to lessen violence and stop teenage pregnancy,” Fahada says. Fahada takes her role as a girls’ rights advocate seriously and sees herself as a “voice for their rights.” She’s also keen to speak

out on issues such as education, health, teenage pregnancy, and the related issue of early marriage, which she says is a huge problem in her community. To prepare for her role at Women Deliver, Fahada researched on what issues are important to girls as well as interviewed teenage mothers in her community to find out the impact motherhood is having on their education. At the Women Deliver conference, Plan International’s CEO Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen will be setting out how the Because I am a Girl movement will work towards creating a world that values girls, promotes their rights, and ends injustice as Plan International and its partners will be launching a new global initiative to drive and track SDGs implementation for women and girls. The Women Deliver Conference is the largest gathering of policy makers, experts, dignitaries, activists, members of civil society and business leaders in a decade for girls’ and women’s rights, health, and well being, following the launch of SDGs. Plan International has been working in the Philippines since 1961 with a focus on helping marginalised Filipino children in more than 400 communities across the country access their rights to education, health, protection, and participation.
