The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said that President Rodrigo Duterte may have a surprise for workers on May 1, Labor Day today.

“We are preparing an announcement by t he President to address the issue of wages para naman may maibigay siyang regalo pagdating ng Mayo 1,” said Labor and Employment Silvestre Bello III as the government’s preparations for the commemoration of 115th Labor Day .

But, he did not give any specific details as to what would be the possible benefits for the workers.

“Basta benefits lang .

Depende kay President (Duterte). We are not yet sure kung ano ‘ yung announcement niya ... basta may announcement,” the Labor and Employment chief assured.

“We realized the workers will need some ayuda (assistance) but you would

also have to consider the position of management,” he added.

President Duterte is set to lead Labor Day rites in Davao on Monday.

“We are honored that the President himself will be gracing our main Labor Day celebration,” Bello said.

The Chief Executive will be leading the Labor Day assembly and dialogue with workers at the People’s Park in Davao City.

“The President, together with labor officials will meet trade union leaders from the national and local federations to discuss and address labor and employment issues and concerns,” he said.

The meeting will be followed by a Labor Day Assembly which will be attended by about 10,000 workers. It will serve as an avenue for different labor and civil society organizations, as well as ordinary See hear, page A7

Duterte to discuss Veloso Mayor Sara condemns case with Widodo – Palace NPA attacks in Davao

The case of Mary Jane Veloso was one of the issues at the discussion table when President Rodrigo Duterte hosts his Indonesian counterpart President Joko Widodo during a bilateral meeting in Malacañang last Friday.

This was disclosed by Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella in a statement sent to reporters.

Widodo arrived for a state visit last April 28 following a state visit by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei on April 27.

Abella said that the state visits of the two leaders were excellent opportunities for the Philippines to further strengthen bilateral

relations with its ASEAN neighbors.

Besides issues of common concern, the Palace official said the condition of Filipino workers were also discussed.

“President Duterte separately discussed with Sultan Bolkiah and President Widodo issues of common concern, such as security of our sea lanes, crossborder traffic and patrol, and economic cooperation,” he said. “ The President also discussed the situation of Filipino workers in these countries, including the case of Mary Jane Veloso,” Abella said.

Veloso was arrested in

April 2010 at Yogyakarta airport in Indonesia after 2.6 kilograms of heroin was discovered in her luggage and was sentenced to die on October of the same year.

She was granted a last-minute reprieve from execution in April last year after the surrender of her recruiters in the Philippines.

On Wednesday last week, Veloso’s mother, Celia, went to Malacañang to request President Duterte to ask for clemency for her daughter.

She was accompanied by relatives of other Filipinos facing execution abroad to air similar appeal for their loved ones. (PNA)

New shipping route to strengthen trade relations between PHL and Indonesia

The opening of a new maritime route within the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) is expected to strengthen economic ties between the Philippines and Indonesia.

A roll-on roll-off (RORO) ferry service traversing the Davao City-General SantosBitung, Indonesia route to be launched Sunday (April 30) will provide a cheaper and faster avenue for trading goods among EAGA’s key cities.

“Sea linkage within the EAGA subregion is crucial in strengthening trade relations among its member countries since it supports the achievement of the goals of the other EAGA pillars such as agribusiness, tourism, and sociocultural and education,” said Secretary Datu Abul Khayr Alonto, chairman of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) in a statement.

Alonto, who is also the

Philippine signing minister for BIMP-EAGA, further stated that maritime transportation contributes to the subregion’s development and the Philippines will continue to push for the opening of sea routes within.

He is encouraging industry leaders and traders to support the initiative and utilize the various opportunities and benefits that the new route will provide.

The MinDA chairperson also reiterated that public support is important to the success of the project which is the Philippine government’s maiden accomplishment under its chairmanship of the ASEAN this year.

The new maritime route is expected to become a more cost and time-efficient alternative to the ManilaJakarta-Bitung route, which usually takes about three to five weeks of shipping time.

In contrast, direct shipping through the DavaoGenSan-Bitung route will take only one and a half

day of sailing (excluding port stay).

M/V Super Shuttle RoRo 12, operated by the Asian Marine Transport Corporation, will provide a weekly shipping service to the route with a vessel capacity of 500 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).

Savings of up to USD1,500 (PHP74,000) per TEU is expected to be generated through this route given its USD700 (PHP34,713) per TEU rate per 20 feet dry container as compared to the Davao-General Santos to Manila to Manado via Jakarta which amounts to USD2,200 (PHP109,098) per TEU. Furthermore, the opening of the route will provide greater opportunities for local businessmen to participate in international trade as well as stimulate other areas of development such as joint tourism promotion, establishment of direct linkages, and increase in investments, among others.

Chinese naval flotilla drops anchor in Davao City With the warming of ties between the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China, three Chinese naval vessels will arrive for a three-day goodwill visit at the Sasa Wharf in Davao City from April 30 to May 2.

Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao public affairs office chief Lt. Jetmark Marcos said the three ships are from the China People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy Task Group 150.

They are the Chang Chun (DDG-150), a guided missile destroyer; the Jin Zhou (FF-G532), a guided

missile frigate; and the Chao Hu (890), a replenishment ship.

The customary welcome ceremony and port briefing will be conducted upon the arrival of the Chinese ships at Sasa Wharf.

The meeting point procedure will be held at a vicinity north of Davao Gulf.

The flotilla will be headed by Rear Adm. Shen Hao, Deputy Commander of the East Sea Fleet of the PLA Navy and concurrent Commander-in-Chief of the PLA Navy Task Group 150. (PFN/PNA)

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte -- Compostela Valley Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy and Davao del Norte Governor Anthony del Rosario affirmed commitment to a sustainable Tagum Libuganon River Basin (TLRB).

The two chief executives, together with other local officials and heads of national government agencies, expressed their commitment by signing the pledge wall during the 1st TLRB Summit on April 27 at the Tagum City Hall Atrium.

Governor Uy stressed his unwavering support to the programs laid in the masterplan of the riverbasin, adding that this will uplift

the lives of the people and enhance the collaboration of different sectors.

In the flooding incidents in the river basin areas, Governor del Rosario emphasized that the Regional Development Council has already passed a resolution for the formulation of comprehensive master plan on flood mitigation in Davao del Norte and even encouraging Governor Uy to also craft for the Compostela Valley.

Del Rosario said that once this master plan on flood mitigation will be formulated, it might affect the comprehensive land use plan of the municipalities and cities.

NGCP eager to support government’s broadband program In support of the government’s national broadband plan, NGCP has been in close coordination with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Department of Energy (DOE) for a possible partnership to bring high-speed internet nationwide. “ Ta l k s b e g an e ve n in the past administration. As early as 2012, we were already exploring the broadband potential of our facilities with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), which was the lead agency for the project at that time. Under the current administration, talks have been ongoing for the past 6 months. We’ve given the DICT and DOE all the information they need to put this project forward.

We’ve informed them that the current transmission facility will be able to

support the broadband network envisioned by the government. NGCP’s wide fiber optic network and related resources are sufficient to support this priority program under Pres. Rodrigo Duterte’s administration. We are just waiting for details from our government partners,” confirmed Henry Sy, Jr., NGCP President and CEO. “Allegations by TransCo [National Transmission Corporation] that ‘there are communication facilities which are installed in the transmission building without [TransCo’s] permission,’ and that the same constitutes a violation of our Concession Agreement, are simply untrue,” stressed Mr. Sy. “Our Concession Agreement specifically allows us to develop the transmission facility and engage in any business which maximizes the utilization of the

That petitioners are husband and wife respectively in a marriage performed under Civil rites on May 26, 2003 at Bacolod City, both petitioners had been converted to Muslim and thereby embraced Islam Religion as their new found faith, by virtue of their respective intellectual choices which which were duly registered with this court, both of them can be served with summons and other legal processes relative to this case at their residents at Bacolod City and Palmspring, St. Mary Tibanga, Iligan City respectively;

That said marriage did not last long due to lack of love and affection until the relationship manifested incompatibility and sustained misunderstanding between petitioners and reached the point of irreconcilability and they separated from each other for more than five (5) years,they decided to separate live physically in bed and board thereby, executed Memorandum of Agreement in order to formalize their separation. Since their separation, they had never been communicating or supporting either financially or emotionally to each other,neither minding each other affair’s; Petitioner’s seek judicial decree of divorce, thereby, severing their marriage bond on March 26,2003, so that they will have free hand to do what a single man or woman could do without marital burdens. Reconciliation between them had already been diligently employed but all proved futile.

WHEREFORE, finding this petition to be sufficient in form and substance, set the initial hearing of this case on May 26, 2017 at 9:00 a.m at which time, date and place. Labor Day job fair to net 6,000 jobs AT least 6,849 job opportunities are offered to more than a thousand jobseekers in Northern Mindanao’s job and business fairs, simultaneous throughout the country and spearheaded by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on May 1, 2017 during its 115th Labor Day celebration.

Of the confirmed job vacancies solicited, almost 2,000 will be available for local employment from 64 participating private companies and government agencies.

Top local job vacancies are call center agents (300), property consultants (100), staff nurses (45), field construction officers (40) and sales associates for Cagayan de Oro (30).

Meanwhile, DOLE 10 is expecting around 4,955 job vacancies for overseas employment from 26 accredited recruitment agencies.

Top overseas vacancies are nurses (500), service crew (400), food servers/waiters (350), cleaners (310) and caregivers (300).

There will also be job fairs on the following sched-

ules: MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (June 1 to 2); BSU Main – Malaybalay (May 11); Central Mindanao University – Musuan (May 23); Mambajao, Camiguin (May 2); and Oroquieta City Gymnasium (May 1).

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 10 director Joffrey Suyao exhorted the jobseekers, advising them to be fully prepared when they participate in the job fair.
