Insurgency problem, ‘unclear’ DAR policies weaken Phil. fruit exports

The continuing attacks and extortion activities by communist rebels in Mindanao and “unclear” policies on agribusiness ventures by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) are among the factors that further weaken the country’s fruit export. Industry players and workers in the banana and pineapple sectors have expressed growing concern over the atrocities committed by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels against fruit plantations in Mindanao, despite a much-publicized interim ceasefire supposedly forged between the government and communist insurgents in the Netherlands.
