EcoWaste reiterates push for eco-friendly campaigning THE EcoWaste Coalition reiterated its push for ecofriendly campaigning activities after witnessing the unabashed littering at separate rallies held Monday in Manila to proclaim the candidacy of reelectionist Mayor Joseph Estrada and former Mayor Alfredo Lim. “We find the unchecked littering at public assemblies inexcusable,” according to Aileen Lucero, EcoWaste Coalition coordinator.

“There is no justification for turning our parks and streets into dumping grounds. It’s totally unacceptable for us to litter even in the exercise of our democratic rights. It’s not right even if we know that street cleaners will pick up after us without complaining,” she said.

DOLE-11 takes in 240 Davao youths under Jobstart program DAVAO City -- About 240 youths from Davao and Tagum cities will be given training on life skills by the Department of Labor and

Employment (DOLE) in collaboration with the Canadian government through the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

DOLE-11 regional director Joffrey Suyao said Jobstart Philippines will be rolled out next month in Davao region particu-

larly for Davao City (120 youths) and Tagum City (120 youths). The program has been implemented in selected areas of the country.

These are youths between ages 18 to 24 years old either who finished high school or technical vocational course or a college graduate with not more than one year work experience but no work at the time of enlistment.

The life skills training will be for eight days, Suyao said, adding that the trainees will be taught on communication skills, good manners, critical thinking, finance handling and other

related topics.

“It is important that they learn basic life skills because these are some of the traits that employers look for when they hire workers,” he said.

He said many employers noticed during interviews that “job seekers today cannot put across their ideas maybe because they are used to shortcut messages while communicating through social media”.

He said it is important that they develop these skills which they would need on the actual job.

“The life skills training

will prepare them to survive in the competitive world of work,” he said.

After the eight-day training, they will undergo not more than three months training based on the hiring needs of the employers then move on to the internship program with the employers for an actual work training.

PH economy remains strong despite annual dip in e-recruitment in February BETWEEN February 2015 and 2016, Philippines experienced a -40% drop in online hiring activities, according to the latest Monster Employment Index (MEI) Philippines, this is a 7% decline from -33% annual dip registered in January 2016.

Tracked by employment website Monster.com, the MEI Philippines is a gauge of online job posting activity, recording the industries and occupations that show the highest and lowest growth in recruitment activity locally.

In February, the BFSI sector reported the sharpest growth in online hiring, at 1% yearover-year, down from 13% decline year-over-year registered in January 2016. The sector is once again, the only sector to exhibit positive annual growth in e-recruitment.

The Production/Manufacturing, Automotive and Ancillary sector continues to exhibit the greatest decline amongst the industry sectors, reporting a whopping -67% year-over-year decline.

Across all occupational groups monitored by the Index, online demand for Customer Service professionals takes lead at 9% growth year-over-year. Despite the marginal 2% drop from 11% year-over-year reported between January 2015 and 2016, the group remains the only job role seeing positive growth in online demand.

For the seventh consecutive month, Hospitality & Travel roles saw the steepest decline in online demand among the occupational groups. In February, it reported -76% drop

Assurances on man’s final destination

-oooASSURANCES ON MAN’S FINAL DESTINATION: This column today concerns the gruesome fact of death of a loved one, like the death of my 83-year old father, Mr. Melanio Pauco Mauricio Sr., on March 22, 2016. To many, death is final, and there is no more hope of seeing the relative who has gone to the great beyond again. That is why there is so much grieving when someone passes away.

But, nothing is farther from the truth, when one is a believer whose faith in God is totally and strongly anchored on His Word, the Bible. A true believer who receives his “daily bread” from the Bible is not prone to grieving because of the many assurances from the Word of God that death is not the final destination of any person.

Through social networking sites, for instance, the ‘conventional’ news receiver could easily react to the news, thereby shaping the opinion of other ‘receivers’. Most often, the news of an event would shape the trend and even the outcome of that event.

In a speech a few years ago about the moral burden of the journalists or media people whom I described as the ‘modern-day poets’, I cited the case of a septuagenarian wife whose fellow septuagenarian husband was reported in the main news outlets to be missing. After sometime, the missing old man was found through the voluntary efforts of young netizens who had helped in locating him throughout Metro Manila and the surrounding towns.

How do I talk to God?

This ambiguity concerning the news producer-versus-receiver and event-versus-news divide is dubbed ‘Media Studies 2.0’.

Once again, Media Studies 2.0 can be gleaned from the second round of Presidential Debate held in Cebu on March 20, 2016. Liberal Party Presidential Candidate Mar Roxas’ “Muslim na mananakop” (“Muslim invaders”) remark provoked various reactions from the social media.

Who do you enjoy being with most?

We usually enjoy friends who make us feel accepted the way we are. When we’re at our worst we still know that they accept us, even if they don’t approve and agree with what we’re doing.

We enjoy friends with whom we can be totally “real” and honest. Pretending to be someone you’re not gets tiring.

When you talk with your close friends, do you use formal words you would use with a high government official, minister or pastor?

Of course, not! With your close friends and buddies you can just be yourself and have honest, heart-to-heart talks.

You see, that is how God wants you and me to talk with Him. God wants so much to be your best friend. Everyday He wants to have a good, heart-to-heart talk with you. God doesn’t want to hear big, fancy words and formal prayers.

He wants you and me to be ourselves with Him. He wants us to tell Him how we really feel inside, when we’re happy, sad, even angry.

When Jesus Christ taught His closest friends how to pray, He used the everyday street language of His culture.

Jesus did not teach us to say formal, memorized prayers using big, religious words. In fact, Jesus shocked all the religious leaders when He said we should call God “Dad.” But the only way to be on speaking terms with God is you must ask Jesus Christ to forgive you and take full charge of your life everyday. Troops arrest KFRG leader in Zamboanga Sibugay ZAMBOANGA City –- Government troops have arrested a leader of a kidnap-forransom-group (KFRG) in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, a military official announced Tuesday.

Maj. Filemon Tan, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer, identified the arrested KFRG leader as Esmael Pingli alias Tago Pingli.

Tan said Pingli was arrested by the troops of the Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade around 1:15 p.m.

Monday along the highway between the municipalities of R.T. Lim and Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Tan said the troops were

conducting checkpoints when then spotted and arrested Pingli, who has standing warrants of arrest for kidnapping and illegal detention.

He said Pingli was involved in many kidnapping incidents here in the Zamboanga Peninsula the previous years.

He said among the incident Pingli was involved was the kidnapping of a local businessman, Inocente Bautista.

Bautista was kidnapped on May 27, 2008 in Barangay Tetuan and was released on June 9 of the same year.

Good assessment takes into account learning styles, strengths, and needs. It is flexible and reflects a pupil’s achievement against a set of criteria, not against another student. Effective assessment takes place over time and is varied in its approach. Assessment is not an add-on and it is not teacher-centered. Assessment is part of learning and that means it is an ongoing

part of everyday lessons.

Learning assessment is a pupils’ consumption.

The direction and instruction given should be simple within the comprehension of the learner. A complicated direction and instruction will mislead the learners in answering the questions.

In the Kindergarten and Grade I which uses mother tongue-based instruction, instructional materials and assessment shall be in the regional or native language of the learners (RA 10533, Sec. 4 par. 6).

ZAMBOANGA City -– The Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) has confiscated 106 assorted firearms and arrested 313 persons here in the region since the start of the election gun ban last January 10.

Chief Supt. Miguel Antonio Jr., PRO-9 director, said the confiscation and arrest was made through the conduct of vigorous election gun ban checkpoints; onetime, big-time operations; and, Oplan Lambat Sibat.

Antonio told the Philippines News Agency the firearms were confiscated in the following places: Zamboanga City, 29; Zamboanga Sibugay, 30; Zamboanga del Sur, 28; and, Zamboanga del Norte, 19.

Antonio said the 313 persons were arrested in the following areas: Zamboanga City, 63; Zamboanga Sibugay, 87; Zamboanga del Sur, 74; and, Zamboanga del Norte, 89.

He said they also confiscated 10 hand grenades, 13 bladed weapons, 738 ammunition of various calibers and 239 sachets of methamphetamine hydrochloride locally known as shabu.

He directed all the provincial and city directors as well as the chiefs of police to continue the intensified implementation of the gun ban to ensure the conduct of peaceful and orderly elections in May this year.

In a classroom setting, children have different family background, social interaction and also cultural practices. They also have different economic privileges and educational background of the parents. With these factors, it influences the total package of a child.

Since they came from different families, they bring their different attitude and behavior in the class.

Sometimes, at the beginning of the school year, as experienced as a Grade I teacher, clashes occur in the classroom between classmates because they are still adjusting each behavior. As a teacher, I should also observe every child’s behavior.

Learning the different attitude and behavior each child helps identify what teaching strategy would be suitable for a certain learner. Since learners in the classroom are diverse

learners, this means that teacher should design diverse teaching strategies for the learners. In this situation, teacher should be creative, resourceful and innovative.

The minority and lowincome children often perform poorly on tests is well known. But the fact that they do so because we systematically expect less from them is not. Most of us assume that the low achievement of poor and minority children is bound up in the children themselves or their families. The children don’t try. They have no place to study. Their parents don’t care. Their culture does not value education.

These and other excuses are regularly offered up to explain the achievement gap that separates poor and minority students.

However, whatever learners’ behavior and learning performance, will depend on the kind of teacher – his/her passion, commitment and dedication of teaching.

DAVAO City--The executive director of the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) has expressed concern over reports that the fire that started at the peak of Mt. Apo last Saturday afternoon is spreading towards Mt. Talomo, location of the nest sites of the critically endangered Philippine Eagles, as one of the eagles they are tracking there “seems to be missing.”

“We are very concerned for the Lumads, the eagles and all other wildlife who call Mt Apo their home.

Already, one of the young eagles we’re tracking seems to be missing,” Dennis Salvador, PEF Executive Director told MindaNews.

He said the PEF is tracking two eagles in their natural habitat there using GPS transmitters: an adult female and a young eagle. PEF personnel track the radio signals from a miniature

DAVAO City--The red tide alert covering Balete Bay in the northwestern side of Pujada Bay in Mati City, Davao Oriental has been lifted, an official of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-11I said.

Speaking in Monday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City, BFAR 11’s chief of fish production Raul Millana said water sampling earlier this month showed that shellfish from the bay turned out negative of parasitic poisoning.

He said shellfish from the bay are now safe for consumption as the toxicity caused by an overgrowth in aquatic microorganisms called “dinoflagellates” had decreased to safe levels.

He surmised that the microorganisms which triggered the phenomenon known as algal bloom died due to drought.

“It is no longer conducive

for the microorganisms.

They were gone naturally,” he said.

BFAR-11 director Fatma Idris had said that siltation caused the overgrowth of microorganisms, and will continue to trigger the recurrence of red tide in Balete Bay if not addressed.

The result of the latest water sampling on Balete Bay came out last March 19, more than three weeks after the release of an earlier test that showed the bay was still affected by red tide.

BFAR-11 did the sampling weekly together with the local government of Mati City.

“We have s ampling stations there. Previously, laboratory results showed high toxicity in Balete Bay,” Millana said.

KAPATAGAN, Digos City, Davao del Sur--The still raging forest fire in the country’s highest peak, Mt. Apo, started as a grassfire at the common camping area at the peak Saturday noon when most of the climbers had gone down from the Holy Week trek, Digos City tourism officer Edgardo “Bebot” Elera said.

Elera told MindaNews that members of the city’s monitoring team who were at the peak tried to put out the fire but it quickly spread as the grasses had dried up due to the drought.

Cagayan de Oro City -- Homeless Street Families in Cagayan de Oro will soon engage themselves in livelihood ventures, to gain employment and other livelihood opportunities with the help of the Department of Social Welfare and

Development’s Modified Conditional Cash Transfer specifically designed to provide livelihood assistance to the Indigenous Peoples and Homeless Street Families.

from the Philippines School of Science and Technology, DSWD’s partner institution for this specific project.

The training aims to contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic condition of homeless street families through empowerment and capacity building.

This will prepare them in their livelihood ventures, employment and other livelihood opportunities, in the future.

In preparation for their training, the families are given skills training orienta-

tion, for them to be aware of the training processes, allowances and duration.

“Recipients to this training will be provided with uniforms free of charge and livelihood tool kits during their culmination day”, says Mr. Bendisula, the proprietor of the Philippine School of Science and Technology.

He said they are protected from the fire by the boulders of the Digos City trail. But the fire, according to reports reaching Elera, had spread towards Sta. Cruz and the Mt. Talomo on the Davao City side.

He also took exception to reports that climbers were “evacuated” from Mt. Apo. He reiterated that by Saturday noon, most of the climbers had gone down from the peak.

Recemilla said part of the trekking policy is that if a fire is reported, climbers must immediately take the nearest and safest exit, which in this case last Saturday was the Kidapawan trail.

A total of 441 had gone down from Mt. Apo as of Sunday via Kidapawan City, he said. Out of this number, 379 had climbed from the Davao del Sur side to reach the peak.

Fire lines Firefighters, mountaineers and other volunteers have flocked to the covered court behind the barangay hall here, awaiting deployment to the site where they are expected to make fire lines or firebreaks to stop the spread of fire.

A truckload of volunteers was set to proceed to the Paradise area at around 2 p.m. but Inspector Donald Concepcion of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Digos City, the Incident Commander, held their departure following reports that Paradise may not be the best staging area.

Concepcion said it would be best to check with the Philippine Air Force on their aerial survey and await reports from the two teams that had gone up to Paradise area and Sta. Cruz area to check on the fire.

At 40, Concepcion has climbed Mt. Apo 56 times.

Century Tree Trail On the map, Trinidad pointed to the area where the century trees are and said it was important that fire lines be set up to prevent the fire from reaching the century trees.

He said the trees are huge – it would take from eight to 10 persons to encircle their trunks – and tall at around 300 feet high.

Trinidad said he sees no problem in getting assistance from volunteers as mountaineers from Zamboanga, Iligan and Cagayan have signified their intention to help.

To make these possible, we have engaged communities to help us monitor and protect the nest sites within their area,” it said.

Salvador said their staff and volunteer forest guards “have been deployed not only to check on the eagles but to help suppress the fire if necessary.”

He said they will be mobilized to build firebreaks to stop the spread of the fire.

At least 200 persons in the North Cotabato and Davao side of Mt. Apo have volunteered to help construct fire line or fire breaks.

Described by the late aviator, Charles Lindbergh, as “the air’s noblest flier,” the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga Jefferyi), declared national bird in 1995, is listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

The IUCN said the number of these majestic birds “has seen a steep decline, primarily due to habitat destruction,” noting that since the 1960s, vast tracts of tropical forest had been cleared for commercial development, cultivation and

mining activities.

The PEF estimates a population of “only 400 pairs remaining in the wild.”

The PEF’s Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos, Davao City, hosts a total of 35 Philippine Eagles, 20 of them bred in captivity.
