CAGAYAN de Oro City-The armed group led by the Maute brothers that figured in last month’s clash with government troops in Lanao del Sur is nothing but a band of “guns for hire, bandits, and extortionists,” Army Chief Lt. Gen. Eduardo Año said on Wednesday.

Año said the group was mistakenly hyped as ISIS or Islamic State of Syria and Iraq when it clashed with government troops for two weeks in Butig town, Lanao del Sur last month.

“They were just a bunch of guns for hire, extortionists and bandits who wanted to be recognized as ISIS,” Año told reporters.

DOH warns public vs measles, skin diseases

Rufus opens campaign with a bang, Duterte his president

CAGAYAN de Oro City second district representative and mayoral candidate Rufus B. Rodriguez opened his official campaign on Saturday morning with a bang.

This developed as Rodriguez, a pure bred Kagayanon, officially announced his support to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as

his presidential candidate.

The 62-year-old Rodriguez, who is among the most outstanding representatives in in the House of the Representatives, proudly declared his stand in Magnum Radio FM, a local radio station in Cagayan de Oro City, early Saturday morning.

He said he upholds the sentiments of the majority of his party, the Centrist Democratic Party (CDP).

“Dili ako pwede magbuot sa akong kaugalingon, but I heard the voice of the majority sa partido and I have to hear them,” said Rodriguez.

The decision to support the iron-fist mayor of Davao was already ironed out two weeks ago and was kept mum until Saturday’s official campaign for local candidates.

Davao del Sur farmers revive coffee plantations

BANSALAN, Davao del Sur--Farmers from the hinterland Purok Pluto, Sitio Balutakay in Bansalan, Davao del Sur have been reviving their coffee plantations after almost decades of hiatus for lack of local market demand.

Ariel Dubria, member of the board of the Balutakay Coffee Farmers Association (BACOFA), said that coffee trees were totally banished in their community in the 1980s and then replaced with vegetables to earn the farmers a living.

He said they started growing coffee trees again following a resurgence of local demand in early 2000 but the progress is barely even half, explaining that the preceding growers were

as not receptive to government and non-government support.

Around 60 farmers are engaged in coffee farming, with at least 50 hectares estimated to have been planted with Arabica coffee trees. Each hectare has around 1,800 to 2,000 trees.

“Some of the farmers before would hide if there were NGOs visiting us here.

So when we took over, we really make sure to get every single opportunity to avail of the assistance…

We planted coffee again because there was a stable market in 2000 up to now. The cost to produce vegetables was also very expensive,” he said.

The community is located 400 to 1,000 meters above sea level at the foothills of Mt. Apo.

Dubria said the downside of vegetable farming is that they would always plant after harvest. Unlike coffee, the farmers will just have to wait until the next harvest season.

Some of the non-profit organizations who came to help them get back on their feet are the Kapwa Upliftment Foundation, Inc., Catholic Relief Service, and ACDI-VOCA of the US Department of Agriculture. They have offered support for farm inputs, technical assistance, and marketing.

He said they are also among the beneficiaries of ACDI-VOCA’s Mindanao Productivity for Agricultural Commerce and Trade (MinPACT), an $8-million project that seeks to “increase agricul-

tural productivity and trade in Western and Southern Mindanao. Cocoa, coconut, and coffee farming families in these areas will benefit from higher yields and product quality, as well as better access to services and markets.”

He said they also underwent trainings on good husbandry and post-harvest processing from the best of the lot in world’s best coffee-producing countries Ethiopia in Eastern Africa and Colombia in South America.

“Our coffee passed the taste and quality standards of the cupper from Colombia,” Dubria said.

Harvest peaks between October to January, which yield the farmers around 10 to 20 metric tons of dried coffee beans, he said.

“Of course, we’re hoping that this will not happen because we have already conducted immunization in some areas… But still there is a need to remain vigilant and be in the preventive side,” she stressed.

She said that because of such possibility, there is a need to be more cautious and aware of the importance of vaccinating the children against measles.

“So, kailangan pa rin ng pag-iingat at pagpapabakuna ng mga bata,” she added.

The Health Chief said measles can be easily spread to other people if a patient passes by or is in the same place where some people without measles are also staying because it can be spread through the air or airborne.

She also said that most vulnerable to it are children, pregnant women and those with weak immune system who are exposed to patients with measles.

To reduce the risk of spreading the disease, it is important that a herd immunity is achieved through the immunization program being done by the government to fight it both in the community level and in the school through the schoolbased immunization.

WHILE many Filipinos are currently absorbed in-what I like to call--the “Presidential Sabong”-where the cyber, media and publicity cock pitting and mudslinging seems to be never ending--there is another cockfight on which the Filipinos should be paying attention. That is, the US presidential elections.

The reason the US presidential elections are so significant and so important to the rest of the world is exactly because of how US presidents’ foreign policies directly impact and influence the way all the other countries relate to each other. Case in point, when President Obama assumed office and reversed former President Bush’s policy on US presence in the Middle East, his policy of withdrawal, non-intervention, and strategic patience has rippled into the rise of Daesh (ISIS), the stepping forward of Russia, and the world’s largest humanitarian crisis in history. Not to say that the chaos today is Obama’s fault, but that the world acts in response to what the US does.

That being said, Filipinos should be paying attention to the US presidential elections because whoever will become the next leader of

the free world will also have the power to shake the status quo. Filipinos need to be thinking about how the next US president will relate to the Philippines?

Will he or she improve relations? Or will he or she significantly change or cause US-Philippine relations to disintegrate? What does a stronger US-Philippine alliance mean and what does losing our greatest ally mean? We need to be thinking about this because the Philippines would then need to be prepared for what this new leader would bring.

Currently, the two major US parties have not chosen their nominees yet.

Using these three factors, we can analyze any speech conducted by any politician anywhere. These three factors are ethos, pathos, and logos. It was introduced by Plato along time ago, that in any speech these three factors can be taken for consideration.

However, when we learn about public speaking in any classroom, we also know these three factors: ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos refers to credibility from the inside of the speaker.

It is related to the speaker’s character. Thus, it is so per-

sonal. As it is being personal, any person has his own style that cannot be copied by anyone else. However, the speaker personality shows his speech attractiveness.

With ethos, the speaker can get huge attention from the spectators. Public will be engrossed with any words and sentences being spoken by the speaker. Public will enjoy any word or sentences being spoken by the speaker, in the sense that when the speaker has high credibility.

It is derived from his or her personality since the beginning. Thus, personality can be viewed from even the choice of words and sentences, even the intonation spoken when delivering the speech.

The next is pathos. It is related to emotional connection between the speaker and audience. When the speaker understands profoundly the audience’ emotional condition, he will be successful in his speech. THINK a minute.

In the town of Blackpool, England is a high tower almost 400 feet tall with a clear glass floor on the top.

So when you’re up there it looks like you’re walking on air hundreds of feet high above the ground.

An English newspaper had a funny photo of a woman at the edge of this invisible glass floor. Her hands were covering her face as she tried to get the courage to walk on it. Even though she knew the floor was safe, she was still afraid!

You might have flown on an airplane before, and even though you knew the plane was safe, and the pilot was well trained, you still were nervous and scared.

Because you know there is always a chance something might go wrong!

But then, there’s nothing in this world that is perfectly safe, guaranteed with no risks whatsoever.

This is true even in the simple everyday things.

Any day, we can have a car or bus accident on our way to work or school; or we can find out we have cancer or some other disease; or your good, sweet little girl can get involved with the wrong guy.

But even though nothing is completely safe or riskfree, we can’t keep ourselves and our family locked away from the world so that we don’t go anywhere or do anything! But you know, there’s one road you can take that’s 100% guaranteed safe and fun: to follow and live Jesus’ way - every day of your life.

Ochotorena served as one of the speakers during the graduation rites of the five-day Community-Based DRRM Training of Trainers for IP Youth Communicators at the Goat2geder Hotel and Restaurant, this city initiated by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Caraga in partnership with the Philippine Information

Agency (PIA) Caraga and 4th Civil Military Operations (4th CMO) Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) based here.

The IP youth learned during the event valuable infor mat ion on C ommunity Risk Assessment which taught them to assess hazards, vulnerabilities, and risks, abilities to cope, prepare coping strategies and prepare risk reduction implementation plans in their communities.

Also, they were able to prepare Hazard Spot Map which indicated boundaries, roads, bridges, and bodies of water, houses, populated areas, landmarks and natural resources in the community.

Tan said the slain ASG explosive expert was identified as Eric Ajibon, who is also a sub-leader, and the other one was only known as a certain Abu Ayan. Their remains are in the custody of the police for proper disposition.

Tan said Ajibon was responsible in the series of bombings against the

government forces and business establishments in Basilan province.

According to Tan, the clash ensued after the residents reported to the Army’s 4th Special Forces Battalion the presence of around 40 ASG brigands led by Isnilon Hapilon in Sitio Luglugi, Barangay Macalang, Al-Barka.

Tan said they received intelligence report that six followers of Hapilon were wounded during the clash and were dragged by their fleeing comrades.

Social Studies School Instruction: Misguided or Neglected?

Teaching is a noble profession in which you can somehow create a trend, make a new set of thinking skills and somehow form a great influence in relation to decision making and solving problem skills and this idea made teaching Social Studies such a powerful tool to create a good pattern of change in the society. The main purpose of Social Studies instruction are on understanding and appreciation of the interactions among men and the motivations underlying them. Social Studies, in this view, are not so much to promote the preservation of the cultural heritage as to assist in the creative reconstruction of the society. The stress is on providing opportunities to the students for critical

thinking about the affairs of men, past, present and future, in order to help them arrive at judgements on matters of crucial importance that will serve to heal cultural cleavage and make social harmony.

The objective of the Social Studies were clear but the aim to heal cultural and social harmony were not fully stress, the Department of Education in the Philippines may have not created a review on school activities or programs which may neglect the important core learning ideas for Social Studies or may not have carefully assessed if activities can be considered successful in attaining the objectives or can somehow alter the ideas of students in relation to create opportunities in our country.

Bear Brand Nutritionist, Roxanne T. Dodole together with the Laki sa Gatas team visited our school last January 25, 2016. They conducted a short evaluation to the parents and children, programs, games and give a ways of their Bear Brand

products. They explained the good nutrition that milk could give to our young children.

THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that climate change might affect the food production in the country.

Speaking before the Joint House Special Committees on Food Security and Climate Change, Thelma Cinco, head of the Impact Assessment and Applications Section of the PAGASA, said there has been an increase in global sea surface temperature of 0.85 degree Celsius since 1880, and is projected to rapidly increase in the coming years due to climate change.

Cinco said the dry and wet spells brought about

by El Niño and La Niña phenomena will greatly and directly the agricultural production.

Cinco said the country will experience an average of 19 weather disturbances yearly especially during the last quarter of the 2016.

OIC Director Christopher Morales of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Field Operation Service told the joint committee

Morales said the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) was not able to release the said amount apparently due to some changes in the budgeting process.

Morales said the DA had to tap P900 million from its operational budget in order to implement some of its climate change mitigation programs.

MDPPA posts highest motorcycle sales growth in ASEAN, projects 15% growth for 2016 After capping 2015 with an 8% yearon-year growth on motorcycle sales, the Philippines holds the best growth performance among the Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries (FAMI) member countries that include Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA), a group of motorcycle manufacturers in the Philippines, announces that the total 2015 unit sales of its member companies in the country achieved an 8% year-onyear increment.

Collectively, MDPPA members Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and KYMCO sold 850,509 units last year, up by more than 60,000 units from 2014 sales.

With the country’s sustained economic growth and an increasing number of citizens who can afford new vehicles, motorcycles have become a transportation alternative in the greater Manila area and other key cities where traffic continues to worsen.

According to an Asian Development Bank (ADB) report, motorcycles are the second most preferred mode of transportation in the Philippines comprising 20.7% of the country’s automotive industry.

MDPPA attributed the past year’s notable growth to the aggressive launch of many new models, dealer initiatives, as well as the anticounterfeiting campaigns of both the group and individual members to bolster

the sales of genuine branded motorcycles.

Early sales data for the first two months of 2016 reinforces the group’s positive outlook for this year.

MDPPA recorded a 34% year-on-year sales growth for the first two months of 2016 prompting MDPPA to forecast a y-o-y increase of at least 25% in the first half of the year. If the trend continues, MDPPA is positive that its members can surpass the 12 – 15% growth initially projected for 2016.

“Given the heavy traffic condition in the metro today, motorcycles have become a better transportation alternative for majority of the commuters. This kind of demand contributed greatly to the growth we achieved in 2015, and I believe this will be the same factor that would greatly contribute to the sales targets we are aiming for this year,” shares MDPPA President Rodel Pablo.

Aside from mobility in Metro Manila becoming a challenge, Pablo also emphasized that the continuous development and introduction of new and innovative models locally, including F1 motorcycles with higher gasoline mileage, will continue to propel motorcycle sales in the country in the coming years.

With the growing demand for motorcycles, MDPPA recognizes the challenge and opportunity to also further advance the association’s advocacies against counterfeiting and the education of both motorists and pedestrians about road safety.

A pair of 5-way adjustable rear shocks help smooth out the bumps and I found the softest setting perfect for riding solo. You can easily set the pre-load if you plan to ride with a pillion regularly. The folding passenger foot pegs flips into position with a press of a button and it has a rubber patch for better foot hold.

styling, they also keep vibrations at bay. The smoked fly screen is more aesthetic than functional but the wide leg shield provides great protection against mud splatter and road debris. It does have pointy parts on each side that kept meeting with my shin. I recommend wearing full track boots. However, if you’re planning on completing entire racer look with your choice in head gear, take note that the under seat compartment will only take an open face helmet.

The instrument panel is rather plain, with an analog speedometer and odometer, but you it has a digital clock that is quite useful for riders on tight schedules.

Bravo also belied reports that he had joined the armed group responsible for the attacks. “Tapat po ako sa MILF dahil ang emir po ng MILF si Al Haj Murad Ebrahim ay ang sinusunod ay si Allah at ang Prophet Muhammad” (I am loyal to the MILF because our Emir, Al Haj Murad Ebrahim follows Allah and the Prophet Muhammad), Bravo said.

OVER 5,000 devotees, pilgrims, foreign, domestic and local tourists from all over the country and in Mindanao witnessed Hinuklog 2016 last Holy Thursday and Good Friday (March 24-26 at the municipality of Medina, Misamis Oriental.

Now on its sixth year, Hinuklog 2016 is an annual Lenten traditional street play depicting the Passion, Trial, Crucifixion and Death of Jesus. The town plaza, the streets were transformed into a real Roman Empire mania where 300 cast and crew composed of local parishioners and Medinanhons clad in Roman costumes performed the Passion Scenes into a real life moving tableau – scenes such as the trial of Jesus, Caiphas accusing Jesus, Pilate investigating Jesus, King Herod mocking Jesus, the freeing of Barabas and Christ to be crucified, the washing of the hands of Pontius Pilate, the Scourging at the Pillar, carrying of the Cross of Jesus, Simon of Cyrene helping Jesus carry his Cross, Judas commiting suicide, Jesus falling three times, the Cry of the Women of Jerusalem, Veronica wiping the face of Jesus, the Seven Last Words and the Death of Jesus on the Cross.

During the pre-presentation press conference, the Mayor Ken Nino Uyguangco told this paper that Hinuklog 2016 is setting a trend for the tourism industry in the municipality of Medina as it will bring foreign, domestic and local tourists to the town and help boost its economic growth. Investors will pour their investments and help develop the economic growth of the locality.

It was learned devotees came as far as Albay, Bohol, Ozamis City, Kidapawan City, Cagayan de Oro City, Bohol, Butuan, Surigao, Cotabato, General Santos City, Manila, Bukidnon and other parts of the country.

In the tail end of 1978, the Teens Theater Association was organized which was being supported by the Kagayan Oro Theater Association (KOTA) through the able support of Edibel Villarando, Neil Stokie, Boy Nick Pilapil and Joselito Tiro, Jr. and under the leadership of Luz Reyes as President and Production Manager. It was revived in 2010 through the initiative of then Mayor Pacifico Pupos Jr.. With his efforts being supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) with the warm support of Mr. Felimon Blanco, Mindanao Representative to the National Commission for Dramatic Arts (NCCA), came the birth of Lumadnong Magdudula sa Medina (Lumagmed).

The casts were then given the proper trainings in theater and the arts-workshops on community theaters which made them great performers. Edu Doremon, a trisikad driver, reprised his role as Jesus Christ. The production team really has made a great street show under the leadership of Rodrigo Edjesca - chairman, Raul Barcelona - production manager, and Allan Barcelona executive producer.
