Maguindanao town councilor survives assassination plot SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao -- A village chair sitting as ex-officio member of Datu Abdullah Sangki town in Maguindanao survived an assassin’s bullet Monday, police said.

Senior Supt. Agustin Tello, Maguindanao town police chief, identified the victim as Councilor Edris Dading Sangki, 45, chairperson of Barangay Kaya-Kaya.

Initial police investigation showed Sangki, president of Association

of Barangay Chairpersons (ABC), was in his home when two men riding in tandem on a motorbike arrived and opened fire on him at about 4 p.m.

Sangki sustained a gunshot wound on his side and is now out of danger.

Police could not say what motivated the suspects in carrying out the attempted murder. They remained at- large and unidentified.

NorCot braces for possible spillover of DavSur clashes MAKILALA, North Cotabato -- Authorities here are on heightened alert over the possible spillover of clashes to this town between the military and New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Managa situated in the adjacent town of Bansalan, Davao del Sur. Lt. Silver Belvis, Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion spokesman, said troops were deployed to the boundary of Makilala-Bansalan towns to block rebels from withdrawing to the North Cotabato area after the military used airstrike and 105 howitzer mortar projectiles in flushing out rebel positions in Managa village since Sunday.

The atrocity forced 150 families to vacate their houses. They are now sheltered at the Managa village evacuation center.

forces overran an NPA camp that could accommodate at least 60 rebels; and recovered 40 tents, utensils and some subversive documents.

According to Belvis, they are currently conducting tight monitoring with counterparts in remote villages here that rebels usually use as escape routes.

Police and military personnel are jointly coordinating their intelligence capability to ensure timely response and prepare for any diversionary attacks from rebel fronts operating in the province.

Belvis said he believes that the rebels are currently trapped in the mountainous area of Davao del Sur and North Cotabato following the Sunday heavy firefight.

DAVAO CITY – The Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) on Republic Act No. 10911 also known as the “Anti-Age Discrimination in Employment Act” is set to take effect on February 28, 2017.

The IRR provisions was created through Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Department Order (D.O.) 170, Series of 2017 which was signed

by Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III on February 2, 2017 and was published in Manila Times on February 13, 2017. According to the DO, the IRR shall take effect 15 days upon publication in a newspaper of general circulation.

D.O. 170 shall apply to all employers, publishers, labor contractor or subcontractors, and both registered and unregistered labor organizations.

Section 4 of the IRR prohibits for an employer to: - To “print or publish, or cause to be printed or published, in any form of media, including the Internet, any notice of advertisement relating to employment suggesting preferences, limitations, specifications, and discrimination based on age” -To “require the declaration of age or birth

date during the application process; decline any employment application because of the individual’s age; or discriminate against an individual in terms of compensation, terms and conditions or privileges of employment on account of such individual’s age” -To “deny any employee’s or worker’s promotion or opportunity for training because of age; forcibly lay off an employee or worker because of old age; or impose early retirement on the basis of such employee’s or worker’s age” -For labor contractors or subcontractors to refuse to refer for employment or otherwise discriminate against any individual because of a person’s age -For labor organizations to deny membership; to exclude from its membership; or to cause or attempt to cause an employer to discriminate any individual because of an individual’s age While Section 5 of the IRR sets exceptions when: -Age is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary in the normal operation of a particular business or where the differentiation is based on reasonable factors other than age; -The intent is to observe the terms of a bona

229 JobStarters in Davao Region set to graduate DAVAO CITY – A total of 229 JobStarters from Davao City and Tagum City are set to finish the full cycle of the second rollout of the JobStart Philippines program in Davao Region.

S ome 109 JobStar ters from Tagum City will graduate on March 1, while 120 JobStarters from Davao City will graduate on April.

Jobstart Philippines is a Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) implemented project in partnership with the Asian Development Bank and the government of Canada.

It is being implemented through the local Public Employment Services Office (PESO) of the target areas.

The program is targeted to aid at risk youth aging 18-24 years old who are not in employment, education and training.

Qualified “JobStarters” will undergo ten days of life skills training, up to three months of JobStartfunded technical training and another three months of work experience with a “matched” employer/ establishment.

The interns in return will be receiving at least 75% of the minimum wage in the relevant city/municipality.

Pilot areas for the first and second phase of implementation of the program here in the Region are Davao City and Tagum City.

Innovation in education through crowdsourcing

CROWDSOURCING, a term first coined in 2006, basically means groups of people coming together to solve a common problem. By enabling people with similar interests to collaborate, crowdsourcing initiatives offer an opportunity to help others, learn something and gain recognition.

UNESCO tapped into online crowdsourcing to help achieve Education for All. The project on crowdsourcing girls education in Ethiopia and Tanzania launched in July 2011 took a communitybased approach to lowering dropout rates in secondary schools in those countries.

One of the groups that benefits tremendously from crowdsourcing in education is the faculty. Teachers and

professors can share lesson plans with each other and find new and innovative ways to share material with students. They can brainstorm together to create a database of resources and best practices that benefit their institution – and then share that information with other schools as well. They can give feedback and offer assistance in further developing curriculum. Finally, faculty can use peer evaluations to help with grading practices and to receive feedback on their teaching styles.

Crowdsourcing is also an important method to improve the way education is conducted by teachers and received by students. With crowdsourcing projects, colleges and universities can use collective brainpower and energy to complete what they can’t do on their own.

Maintaining professionalism with co-teachers

Thus, every teacher shall possess and actualize a full commitment and devotion to duty. The teacher should also provide leadership and initiative to actively participate in community movements for moral, social, educational, economic and civic betterment. He or she must help

the school keep the people in the community informed about the school work and accomplishments as well as its needs and problems.

Thus, the teacher is expected to be an intellectual leader in the community such as providing counseling services as appropriate and to actively be involved in matters affecting the welfare of the people. Every teacher shall maintain harmonious and pleasant personal and official relations with other professionals, with government officials and with the people individually or collectively.

Every teacher shall actively ensure that teaching is the noblest profession and shall manifest genuine enthusiasm and pride in teaching as a noble calling.

The Effect of Tardiness on Students

Tardiness in school if not check will cause a big problem. As the instructional leader of the school, the Principal should check this incidence of tardiness not only by students but also teachers who practiced this kind of attitude. Tardiness affects or influence students learning and the school as well.

Not only students are affected also the teachers.

They reduce the long period of time and leave unsupervised students. There are two forms of tardiness: tardiness in school and tardiness in the classroom. There must be a strict supervision of the school leader to avoid tardiness in school and in a classroom.

Student must understand the importance of punctuality and how it connects the

future working lives.A Tardy teacher also open the door to many problems at school.

Whether they arrived late of school for classes and reduce the length of period of time by their lateness and leave the students unsupervised.

The tardy students are free to misbehave and disturbed nearby classrooms. Fights may break out unsupervised.

Students are late because they know that their teacher is also late and it is a bad practice. They are misleading their students. A teacher is the role model in school and in the classroom. The administrator of the school plays an important role to take action, to protect and check the attitude of students and teachers as well affected by tardiness and influence students learning.

GARBAGE, GARBAGE WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?

Last January 16, 2017, Cagayan de Oro City was awakened by the huge coverage of floodwater that devastated the whole city.

Most of the urban barangays suffered from the wrath of dirty floodwater entering the households, damaging properties and triggering everybody’s life. Why did such phenomenon happen?

Barangay Tablon was one of the barangays in Cagayan de Oro City devastated by floodwater due to the effect of the tail-end cold front that brought heavy rain as well the condition of the tide which made water from the mountains overflowed and went to different residencies. Before the month ends another flood happened

again? Why do these things happen? How can we prevent this thing to happen?

Rain is a natural phenomenon. For farmers it is a blessing from heaven and a sign of bountiful harvest.

Every drop of rain brings hope for an abundant life. But for now because of human abusive activities, rain is no longer a blessing for almost all of us but a curse, a curse that needs our attention.

To help prevent the wrath of incoming floodwater in the next days, Tablon Elementary School adopt two projects named “CLAYGO- Clean As You Go and SAYGO- Segregate As you Go ”, plastic bins inspired project. This is in connection to the Zero Waste Management Program of the

government. The project implies the proper segregation of garbage making recyclable materials into garbage bin like of the empty plastic bottles from soft drink companies and mineral water bottles.

In this case garbage will be lessened and it could help a lot in keeping the garbage in proper place and aside from that it could lead to the development of the child’s creativity because empty bottles are arranged creatively to create a more artistic way of garbage bin presentation.

It could not only serve as garbage receptacles but an attraction and it helps in making our school beautiful and orderly.

Tablon ES staff also extended efforts to inculcate to the minds of the children the proper waste disposal system that starts from the different

classrooms in the different grade levels.

In this way, our children are given the responsibility to take part in making our environment safer even in a simple way. They can also share their knowledge in proper waste disposal at home and at the same time create something beautiful out of the garbage they throw away.

The school Zero Waste Management Project is a hope for a safer future.

But it needs everybody’s cooperation. The school together with the community and the stakeholders must work hand in- hand to encourage everyone to segregate garbage at home.

Through this, the environment will be protected and at the same time additional income for the family.

How can you Promote a healthy Sports Competition

If you have a child involved in sports, you will be spending much more time at playing field. At the game parent cheer their children team and discuss the game while going home.

While most parents have good intentions, they can advertently discourage their children to promote unhealthy sports competition.

Maybe we should know the difference of a healthy sports competition and unhealthy sports competition.

Healthy sports competition: focuses on doing one’s best, having fun, learning skills. It promote teamwork

and participation. Those who give a strong effort and strive to improve themselves, usually advance in learning and improving their skills is the goal children always reach it.

Unhealthy sport competition: focus almost exclusively on winning, being the best, better known than others.

The pressure is more on winning is the goal. Many parents encourage racing to motivate children into action “the first one to finish win”. Some parents use comparison to motivate children by holding a good example.

Quality education is the primary concern of every educational institution, much of which was also and will always be the first and foremost target of the Department of Education, that is why different interventions were made by the DepEd. They have adapted several educational ideas and programs from other

countries just to bring the good education in the Philippines and one of which is the Outcome- Based Education.

Outcome Based Education, which originally named as Success for all was an optimistic philosophy program intentionally crafted to realize the idea of having excellence in education.

Comparing the quality of education in the Philippines to other countries, I

inferior and discouraging children usually resent the other child even if it did not participate in the comparison. This can start increase the unhealthy competition and rivalry among them.

Even if you don’t compare children, they may compare themselves, for they compete for a place in the family or peer group. If one child is good in one area, another child might believe the role is taken and pursue something else-even if they are interested in that activity.

Many parents know that unhealthy sports competition promotes selfishness and poor sportsmanship .Unfortunately in their enthusiasm,

some parents with poor sportsmanship is standing by on the sidelines yelling insults at their children and referees. The parents teaches their children to make excuses Or blame others for their mistakes.

They are also an embarrassment to their children and an irritation to other parents who want to be encouraging healthy sports competition. There are other people and real life situation that will teach children about competition.

Your responsibility is to process those experiences with you child, so they become encouraging lessons about healthy competition.

As a teacher, I must learn and know what a constructivist classroom is so that I can improve teaching and learning process by ensuring that constructivist principles and practices are employed in the classroom. Family is the foundation of every child’s learning.

Therefore, it is the parent’s responsibility to build a good learning environment inside their home. It is because how the child view learning inside their home is also the same on how he give importance to his learning even in school.

Family is the foundation of each student’s learning for this group of people are the ones he first communicated with.

Home is his first school. This is the reason why family has great impact to the learning of the child that would extend to school, once he entered it.

It is even encouraged that parents should show support to their children’s learning process.

Parental involvement is a plus factor in pushing academic achievements among children.

In various researches, it is stated that a child having parents who entice him to do good and supports him during studying hours at home are more likely to excel in class.

It is always better for parents to show interests towards their child’s learning performance in order for a child to realize that his parents value education, and he must do the same as well. Parents involvement as well matters to children’s overall behaviour and attendance during classes.

The atmosphere inside a family’s home could also affect the learning ability of the children. For an instance, a harmonious family relationship encourage concentration in their studies for nothing bad can destruct them. On the opposite, a family where conflict resides can affect children’s literacy negatively. At most, this will lessen child’s interest in studying and further raise emotional problems that will break studying concentration.

The family relationship, home atmosphere and parental involvement is learning are things that matter most to children’s literacy. Thus, this should be managed well.

Why it’s important for teachers to switch off from work

With summer vacation fast approaching, may teachers are beginning to count down the days until they can begin their welldeserved break.

There have been several studies exploring why it’s important for teachers to switch off from work, distress and, simply, give their voices a rest.

The research shows there are three ‘basic psychological needs teachers need to satisfy during the holidays to obtain higher levels of psychological health- a sense of competence, autonomy and feeling connected to other people.

The effects of basic psychological need fulfillment were seen not only during the Christmas break itself, but also in the first few weeks

of the new term in January,’ the academic notes.

Earlier research from Sweden (Aronsson, G., Svensson, L., & Gustafsson, K. 2003) shows that there may be a very good reason why teachers are felling so rundown and tired at this time of year.

The study found that many teachers found it difficult to unwind and recuperate during a busy term.

Being a teacher demands commitment and active involvement,’ the report reads. ‘At the same time, the job contains elements that teachers may find difficult to put out of their minds when the working day is over.

There may also be anticipatory tension prompted by the work of the day ahead. A failure to unwind and recuperate may result.’

The study of 472 educators from 12 schools identified possible associations between these states and work conditions. work experience, symptoms, and sick leave/sickness presence.

It was found that repeated stress exposures without intervening periods of rest, and long-term activation of the body’s psycological stress systems, are reaction patterns that can he expected to increase the risk of ill health.’

The researchers outlined several coping strategies in their report. including planning, staff development. Acceptance expressing feelings to others, and asking for support.

Moreover the recuperation periods of particular individuals have been shown to vary over time,’ the report reads -When people are in good physical and mental shape, they recover more quickly from acute

strain, as demonstrated by studies investigating stress reactions before and after taking a vacation and by studies of individuals working overtime during lengthy periods.

Teachers also benefit from giving their voice a rest during holidays, given they experience an elevated risk of voice problems due to vocal demands in the workplace.

A 2015 report from the Acoustical Society of America found that more than 18 per cent of primary and secondary school teachers in the US miss at least one day of work per year due to voice disorders An analysis of this study showed that background noise levels affect a teachers’ vocal effort, and suggests that teachers vocal health should be given strong consideration when developing new classroom standards.

Though giving first impression can lead to very inaccurate impressions of those around you , some individuals including myself give so much importance of the idea of “first impressions last ’’, for good reasons and because we have this notion that it is better to get the positive first impression of other people .While first impressions are indeed important, additional information that you receive after the initial impression can change what you think about and how you behave around a particular person.

In an organization, we use different ways in forming our impressions to our colleagues. Some ways might give a negative effect or the other way around to such individual. In our school, no matter how we avoid giving negative feedback among the member of our organization still situations brings us to it.

Some of us gave our impressions to such colleague based on the feedback we heard about her. And this way of giving impression is based on perceptions which are considered mental shortcuts, also. They are quick judgments we make about people, often based on schema, attributions, and nonverbal cues they provide, such as the way they dress, but also based on factors outside our awareness.

However, knowing the persons’ quality before uttering your impression to anybody is the best form of impression.

COTABATO CITY, Feb. 27 (PNA) -- Police have launched a massive manhunt against two men behind the murder of a police intelligence officer in M’lang, North Cotabato Monday morning.

Citing initial information, Supt. John Meredell Calinga, M’lang police chief, said Police Officer 3 Lovel Tan was inside his boarding house at 8 a.m. when two men riding in tandem on a motorbike arrived.

One of them went to Tan’s boarding house where he was taking his coffee and opened fire. Tan died on the spot.

In his report to Senior Supt. Emmanuel Peralta, North Cotabato police provincial director Supt. Calinga

said follow-up operation is ongoing.

Constantino Diazon, local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) officer, said the gunmen immediately fled using the same motorbike after killing Tan. Police recovered seven empty shells of cal. 45 pistol in the crime scene.

Diazon believed the killing of Tan is drug related since he has been active in the police campaign against illegal drug personalities in M’lang.

Police investigators have the initial information about the suspects but refused to give further details so as not to jeopardize police followup operations. (PNA)

Attitude and Its Importance to Work

Attitude governs our perception in life. It may bring us to success or it may lead us to failures. Therefore, whatever a person will have ahead of him, his attitude has a great contribution on it.

Life is just a matter on how we see it, how we handle things and how we accept challenges.

Usually, people who succeeded have positive outlook or attitude on his life. No matter how often times they fail, because of their views, they became achievers. It is their attitude that brings them to their victory. The same as in an organization, employees’ attitude is the key to organizational success.

This is the main reason why every school, company, and other business establishment assessed their applicants and clients’ attitude before trusting or promoting them. Because according to some employers measuring employees’ attitude provides an indication of how successful the organization can foster a good environment which nurtures great attitude among employees towards

their job and their school or company.

In teaching profession, teacher’s attitude towards his work should be the most important factor that needs to be measured especially that his clients are children.

In him lies ahead the future of his pupils. Furthermore, in order for a school to have a positive culture I believed that a school head must know how to assess his subordinates’ attitude.

Classroom Management Strategies to Deal With Talkative, Noisy Pupils

A lesson doesn’t necessarily have to be totally silent in order to be a success. But if noise levels rise to the point where they are affecting others, it’s time to take action. Here are some things to consider...

1. Assess your delivery Have you been talking too long? have you used intrigue to get their attention? Have you chopped the work up into focused, bite-sized sections? Have you included breaks and humorous energisers? Is the work achievable? Have you made it relevant to them?

Have you tried to include topics they find interesting?

Are you playing background music and changing the tune during transitions? Are you using active learning strategies to keep them engaged and on-task?

If they are chatting excessively it may be because the work and/or your delivery hasn’t captured them.

2. Stop giving attention to those who are talking Instead, make positive statements about the behaviour you want to see: ‘Thank you for your responses — I’ll answer anyone who puts their hand up without calling out.” ‘’Thanks to people on this table for raising your hands.”

3. Try to deal with the

problem positively “You have a right to be heard - but you need to talk at the right time “ “You’re a good talker, let’s hear what you have to say about the work.”

“You have a great speaking voice we should use that you can read the next chapter.”

4. Alter seating plans Split the group into mixed ability groups to encourage peer support or partner the offending pupils with someone who can help keep them on task.

Use choices to introduce the idea that a seating change is likely to happen if they continue talking.

5. Praise small steps and encourage more progress Either verbally or with a written note placed on their work: 6. Adopt a no-nonsense approach Start with non-verbal gestures; hold your arm out, palm facing them as a ‘stop’ signal. If they continue, walk into their territory and put your hand on their desk or on their book to let them know you don’t approve of them interrupting. If they persist, don’t get wound up, just ten them you’re bored and that their talking is preventing other people from learning. Then move on through your hierarchy of stepped consequences.

Steag hands out financial aid to Macajalar Bay Development Alliance Story by MARK FRANCISCO

STEAG State Power, Inc. on Monday handed out a check worth P204,175 to Macajalar Bay Development Alliance as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Currently chaired

by Balingasag Mayor Marrietta Abogado, the Macajalar Bay Development Alliance is run by 13 coastal municipalities of Misamis Oriental from Laguindingan to Kinoguitan and the city El Salvador as well as the city of Cagayan de Oro. Its thrust is for the conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable development of coastal resources in Macajalar Bay. “Macajalar is an important resource of

Steag because this is where our coal coming from Indonesia is unloaded. This is our contribution to the future of our community.

We have gone beyond providing electric power to sustain Mindanao.

We are helping improve the quality of life of people,” Ghaye Alegrio, Steag State Power, Inc. community relations manager said during the check turnover.

For her part, Abogado thanked Steag State Power, Inc. for its continuing support to the Macajalar Bay Development Alliance through the years most notably during her threeyear term that would last until 2019.

Abogado said that Steag’s laudable efforts are a symbol of the

very strong partnership between the power firm not only in terms of protecting Macajalar Bay but the whole ecosystem of its wider Northern Mindanao community.

Steag State Power, Inc. maintains a total of 16 hectares of mangrove in six municipalities within Macajalar Bay. The P204,175 amount in the check was generated through the 4th Steag Environment Golf Tournament that was held in November 2016 at Camp Evangelista Golf Club in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Macajalar Bay Development Alliance maintains a total of 145.71 hectares of marine protected areas within the bay, totaling 25 in all or 0.08 percent of Macajalar Bay.
