Green groups warn v plastic waste burning Environmental groups in the Philippines warn that proposed plastics investment strategies disguised as “solutions” to marine plastic pollution will only be costly, ineffective and contribute further to environmental degradation while taking away from real solutions. The groups sent their warning in response to two recent reports suggesting that a technology called gasification is a solution to eliminating low-value plastics like sachets and plastic bags, which are the most common plastic waste leaking into oceans. The reports, “The Next Wave” by Ocean Conservancy (OC) and “A Sea of Opportunity” by Encourage Capital, used waste management models relying on Philippine waste data that highlighted the use of gasification. Gasification is a process wherein waste is subjected to high heat in a starved-oxygen environment. It is classified as a form of incineration by the European Union and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Incineration has been banned in the Philippines since 1999. Gasification is not a new technology and has been around for more than three decades. A technology See green, page 7

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur--The Department of Health (DOH) is considering to build P700 million drug rehabilitation facilities in this province that will serve at least 200 drug abuse patients. Top DOH officials together with Chinese infrastructure engineers visited on Monday the two drug rehabilitation centers in the province located at the provincial capitol grounds and the Army camp to assess how the provincial government implement its drug reform initiatives. In response to President Duterte’s war on drugs, the provincial government has established an Outpatient Drop-In Center (ODIC) within the Capitol complex and the Residential Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (RTRC) at the Army headquarters of 401st Brigade in Prosperidad town. The ODIC which is managed by Mark Larry Chua, an international drug addiction therapist, has been treating drug abuse patients who responded to the police call on prohibited drug users and pushers See PLANS, page 7
