Can Southeast Asia live up to its e-commerce potential?

Digital media connectivity in Southeast Asia now rivals that of China, as more than 150 million consumers in the region are digitally active, with high levels of product search and engagement. However, while 250 million consumers are now connected via smartphone and 100 million engage in online transactions, e-commerce in the region is proving to be a tough nut to crack due to constraints in Southeast Asia’s logistics and payments infrastructure. Online retail represents a U.S. $6B market in South-

east Asia, but with online sales below 4 percent of total retail, the region still lags well behind developed markets and even other developing markets. These are the findings from a new report by Bain & Company and Google released yesterday entitled: “Can Southeast Asia Live Up to Its E-commerce Potential?” According to the BainGoogle report, which includes a survey of more than 6,000 Southeast Asian consumers across the Philippines and five other markets (Singapore, Malaysia, Thai-

land, Indonesia, Vietnam, digital influences just 20 percent of consumer purchases, particularly mobile phones, clothing and laptops. Locally, the percentage is slightly higher at 34 percent, but the country is poised for further growth as large parts of the region – mainly those outside Tier-1 cities – become “mobile first” and leapfrog older technologies. Cocpo to get 13 new police cars By GERALD LAQUINON

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The delivery of thirteen police patrol cars would boost the competence of the local police in the maintenance of peace and order in the city, a police officer said Wednesday. Police Supt. Danilo Tumanda, the acting police director, said that three of the mobile patrol cars would come from the city government while the 10 other cars

would be delivered by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). The delivery of the new mobile police cars is timely because all the patrol cars, which are assigned in the city’s 10 police stations are already old – others are dilapidated, he said. He said with the acquisition of 10 mobile patrol cars, each of the city’s 10 police precincts would be assigned one patrol car. Tumanda, however, ex-

Argument: Exposure of children to violent programming on television and cable systems is presently the most damning thing and most harmful to society morals. How do we address this problem? It is true that the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) prohibits all television and cable stations from airing violent programs, movies or footages from 6 am to 10pm (but many children and teens are still up and awake up to midnight and beyond). Television may be considered a very potent and powerful teacher of young children. The problem, according to analysts is that sometimes a modernday hero who uses violence to get what he wants, confuses the young viewers on what is real violence and the make-believe violence showing on TV, thinking that criminals in the tube are powerful role models. With all these premises considered, there must be a solution to the problem. Why not a new law, with a stronger teeth, enacted for the MTRCB and the NTC to jointly prescribe, in consultation with television broadcasters, cable operators, concerned non-government organizations for children, and interested individuals from the private sector, rules for rating the level of violence in television programming including rules for the transmission by television broadcast systems and cable systems of signals containing specifications for blocking violent programming.

The plant is expected for completion in June 2016. Who lobbied and benefited from the Villanueva coal-fired power plant? There is no denying that the local officials themselves are among the lobbyists to make sure that the FDC coal-plant would be realized.

Again, do not ask about who benefited or enjoying the perks of the existing “STEAG Coal-fired Power Plant.” By the way, the STEAG is a German coal plant technology and the first coal plant to be constructed in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental in the early 2000. In fact, it is of public knowledge that some elected local officials are reportedly exercising direct and indirect influence in the operation of the STEAG Power Plant today. To recall, the local officials and residents in all the neighboring towns of Villanueva to as far as Claveria, Misamis Oriental was opposed to the construction of the STEAG coal-fired power plant then. However, the stakeholders and investors of the STEAG Power plant reportedly hired a local official and invested millions of pesos to organize the villages and “bribed” religious leaders and environmental organizations to “keep quiet” and

THINK a minute. I heard a funny, true story about this guy who goes to the gym to exercise several times each week. Each time he takes 15 minutes to change his clothes and get ready. Then he walks around the gym talking with different people. After that he reads the newspaper. Finally, he does a few stretches and 5-10 minutes of exercises. Then he takes a hot steam bath before going home. So in the entire 2 hours he’s at the gym, he only spends about 10 minutes exercising! One day someone heard this man say: “I don’t understand it. I go to the gym almost everyday, but I never seem to lose weight.” Of course, everybody at the gym knows why. They see this guy there doing ev-

erything except the main thing: exercise! It’s very important that we keep the main thing the main thing. If we want to be successful in our job, business, school, or having a happy family, we must always get the main thing done. We should not spend more time and energy on things that are less important than the main thing. We often get distracted and sidetracked doing other things that might be easier or more fun to do, and we fail to ‘take care of business’ with our main responsibilities and priorities. For example, a taxi driver’s main thing is to make money by getting passengers. That means he must be working, driving around looking for passengers. But

if most of the day he just cleans and polishes his car, then at the end of the day that’s all he’ll have—a clean car with no money! Successful people don’t just stay busy and work hard, they work smart! They put first things first by doing the most important things that will make them a success. But many people have heaps of money or positions of respect and power. They’re highly educated, healthy, even good-looking, but they’re still unhappy and poor in real wealth. That’s because unless you have this one main thing, your life will be neither successful nor satisfying. So what is the main thing? It is peace with your Maker. And you can only get it from having a personal

BUTUAN City -- Engr. Ronnie Vic Lagnada, incumbent Congressman Lawrence “Law” Fortun and former Rep. Jose “Joboy” Aquino dominated their rivals in the First Opinion Poll Survey of Butuan voters conducted by the Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) Policy Center here. Conducted from February 27-March 6, 2016, the survey in all of this city’s 86 barangays with 1,932 respondents representing one percent of this city’s voting population, newcomer Lagnada garnered 42.20 percent and beat by 5.05 percent incumbent Mayor Jun Amante who got 37.15 percent. Preference for vice-mayoral post went to former Rep. Jose “Joboy” Aquino II who snared 45.58 percent, more than half of City Councilor Ryan Anthony Culima’s 18.37 percent.

Incumbent Agusan del Norte First District Rep. Lawrence “Law” Fortun showed his dominance with 49.43 percent preference over rival Roan Libarios’ 24.51 percent. The survey had a margin of error of plus 3 percent. The survey questions ranged from top problems that the respondents perceived to be given high priority by the next leadership of the city to be resolved by their preference of leaders they would elect. Local political analysts said that preference for Lagnada as mayor (42.20%) against Amante (37.15%) and undecided (20.08%), may be a result of the method employed by the researchers in which the respondents were asked open-ended questions. Zambo detention facility adopts ‘E-Dalaw’ program ZAMBOANGA City -- The Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC) has adopted the “Electronic Dalaw (E-Dalaw)” program to connect the inmates with their loved ones through the Internet. Supt. Julius Arro, ZCRC warden, told the Philippines News Agency that the program is a joint project of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) through the ZCRC, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Rotary Club of ZamboangaWest. “This program will be an avenue for our inmates to have an opportunity to communicate with their loved ones who cannot afford to frequently visit them,” Arro said. Arro said they have six units of computers that are being used in the E-Dalaw program with trained BJMP personnel and inmates serving as program facilitators. Arro said each of the inmates is given the opportunity to communicate with their love ones “for several minutes” through Skype or any social media

Fisherfolk, residents oppose ‘wholesale destruction’ of Laguna Lake THE bidding ceremony for the Laguna Lakeshore Expressway Dike Project drew sharp opposition as hundreds of fisherfolk under the Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PamalakayaPilipinas), together with members of the alliance Save Laguna Lake Movement (SLLM), marked the bidding with a roving picket at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) last Monday, March 14. Zambo Norte plants 75,000 trees through NGP

DIPOLOG City, Zamboanga del Norte––The provincial government has planted trees of different species in at least 120 hectares in two barangays in the nearby town of Piñan since 2014 under the National Greening Program (NGP). The NGP is a massive forest rehabilitation program of the government established by virtue of Executive Order No. 26 issued on February 24, 2011 by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. The NGP seeks to grow 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares nationwide within a period of six years, from 2011 to 2016. Levy Lagutin Jr., provincial environment management officer-in-charge, said Thursday the tree planting is being conducted in an area identified by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Barangays of Sta. Fe and Teresita in Piñan town. The provincial government had a memorandum of understanding with the DENR through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO)Dapitan City to plant trees in Barangays Sta. Fe and Teresita covering open area of 132 hectares. The area is part of the 35,000 hectares the DENR aims to complete the reforestation program before 2017. “We are now at 78.9 percent finishing point in our tree planting under NGP,” Lagutin said. They had three days observation followed by one subject added per day until the entire subjects are taught. the first shift until the last shift with their respective cooperating teacher, their expectations as well as what they want to learn more on their off campus exposure. They were introduced also to the community during the PTA meeting. The pupils were exhilarate having student teachers in school especially that three of these student teachers are alumni of the said school. They serve as the role model in school in spite of destituteness. The teachers trained them to become more effective in the field of teaching and teach them some strategies/techniques especially in classroom management. The student teachers are thankful also for the tepid felicitous of the Pocopoco teaching staff and the community as well. Reconciliation between them had already been diligently employed but all proved futile. WHEREFORE, finding this petition to be sufficient in form and substance, set the initial hearing of this case on April 08, 2016 at 9:00 a.m at which time, date and place. Balingasag is only a few kilometers from Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. The 55-megawatt Balingasag coal plant is owned by the MInergy Coal Corporation, a corporation owned by the Vivant Integrated Generation Corporation (VIGC). Again, the Balingasag coal plant would not be realized without the imprimatur of the local officials. One simply wonders when, in the beginning, the provincial and local officials were all against coal plants. The environmental groups are also against the coal plant. However, in a sudden turn of events – the provincial and local officials, along with the environmental groups – became silent. What happened?
