MIA DURANO Anatomy of a fashion blogger

MEET Mia Durano. Fashionista. Socialite. Blogger.

She’s the de facto quintessential princess of style in CDO. At the tender age of 18, Mia started her blog TheHandmadeTurban.com. Two years later today, it has already commanded quite a following among young fashionistas in Cagayan de Oro. Coming from a prominent family in Cebu, you would expect Mia to be the maarte type.

She’s the opposite instead.

In this interview conducted last Friday at Starbucks Centrio, Mia shows up in a simple black tank top with very minimal makeup and all. She converses in a bubbly and carefree way, recounting her blogging, travels and experiences in casual joy.

“It is but natural for a girl or a woman to be conscious of how she looks and how she carries herself at all times. It’s not being fashionista, it’s just being who we are,” Mia says.

Sometime in April 2012, this AB International Studies senior from Xavier University chanced upon an online tutorial on how to make your

own turban. Mia tinkered with all the sewing stuff, taking photos in the process and posting them online.

This was the birth of TheHandmadeTurban.com.

Today, Mia updates her blog once a week. “My priority is my studies first.

We have an ongoing thesis to defend but while I have the time, I blog,” she says.

Assisting Mia in taking up pictures of her in various outfits is her 16-year-old younger sister Aniana who is a budding fashionista herself.

Staying in CDO for the past eight years has also inspired Mia to start her blog.

Three CDO groups shortlisted for TAYO 2014

T’s an initial big triumph for Move this World-Pilipinas, ROTA Philippines, Inc. and Green Hand, three Cagayan de Oro-based groups, who are included among the ten nominees from Mindanao shortlisted for the prestigious Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) 2014 awards.

Anti-bullying lobbyists Move this World-Pilipinas, mountaineers-with-a-cause ROTA Philippines, Inc. and gardening advocates Green Hand will join eight other groups to compete in the two-day Area Finals for TAYO 2014 this November 10 to 11 here in Cagayan de Oro City.

They will be joined by ACCESS PYLAP AA, Inc. (Zamboanga City), BNCHS-YECS (Bayugan City), Comvalicat

Youth Builders (Compostela Valley), Hearts and Brains Youth Volunteers (General Santos City), Holy Trinity College ENACTUS (General Santos City), New Breed Special Force (Davao City) and SDSSU 4-H Club (Taglina).

Move this World’s journey is an inspiring one. Started in 2013 in Cagayan de Oro City by physical education teacher Primitivo Ragandang, it has introduced dance workshops all over Mindanao as a peace and stress-relieving tool especially at schools in conflict-rdden areas.

By late 2013, they have shifted focus to fasttrack the implementation of Republic Act (RA) 10627, otherwise known as the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013.

They train both teachers and

students on movement- and dance-based workshops that will discourage bullying and promote empathy, mediation, diversity appreciation, anger management and conflict transformation.

Topics discussed include Social and Emotional Learning in a Safe School Climate, Gamebased Approach of Understanding Emotional Learning, Biological and Scientific Triggers to Behavior, Somatic Safe Space Building, Dance and Empathetic Behavor, Sports for Bullying Prevention, among others.

They also provide counseling and other activities that will enhance the psycholsocial and emotional well-being of both

Have you been hurt by your partner or spouse?

Not physically but verbally, mentally and emotionally?

Have you ever heard someone telling you these lines: “Sino magtiyatiyaga sa iyo, tignan mo nga itsura mo?”

“Ang pangit mo na, ang taba taba mo pa! “ “Wala nang magmamahal sa iyo!”

“Wala kang silbi. Daig mo pa ang inutil.”

This is where the BPS comes in, also known as the “Battered Person Syndrome.”

Reality speaking, even if it’s not physical abuse it can still be considered as BPS because abuse can come in many different ways. Are you being compared to someone else so many times? Is your spouse always highlighting your mistakes? Does he/ she emphasize on the things that you can’t do, rather on the things that you can? Do you have a spouse who is so

VERBAL Verbal abuse occurs when one person uses words and body language to inappropriately criticize another person.

It is defined as improper or excessive use of language to undermine someone’s dignity and security through insults or humiliation, in a sudden or repeated manner.

MENTAL Mental abuse is a form of violence that affects the mind, often leaving the abused feeling worthless and lacking empowerment. You’ll know that you’re mentally abused if your partner/spouse are doing things that make you feel unloved and unworthy of respect.

This type of abuse prevents healthy lifestyles because the abused feels he/she is unable to reach goals or participate in healthy behaviors. A person who is mentally abused often feel insecure, depress and miserable.

EMOTIONAL Emotional abuse may be occurring if “you are being treated in a way that makes you upset, ashamed or embarrassed.” Furthermore, your partner may say mean things to you, threaten you, insult you, put you down, and tell you that you make poor decisions, make you feel crazy, isolate you from friends or family, or

ignore your feelings. Common phrases an emotional abuser may say are, “You’re so stupid,” “Nobody else would ever want you,” “You look disgusting” and “You’ll never be good enough to do that.”

Our tongue is so powerful.

It can bring healing and it can bring pain; it can bring life and it can bring death; it can build and it can destroy. It’s amazing that even though our tongue doesn’t have bones, it can strike a person down. Imagine how small it is yet so powerful that it can destroy not just one’s dignity and confidence but most importantly lives and relationships. (James 3:1-12) People often say hurtful words and statements especially when they are angry or disappointed, when they’re tired or exhausted, when they’re in a bad mood. But for some, it’s like a habit that they’re unaware of. It’s just too sad that when they’ve finally realized how they’ve been too harsh and abusive, it already ruined someone else’s self esteem. Damage has been done. Wounds have been made. You can say sorry and apologize, but words spoken cannot be taken back. You can be forgiven, but the words you spoke will never be forgotten.

So don’t mix your ‘bad words’ with your ‘bad mood’ because you’ll have many opportunities to change your mood, but you’ll never get the opportunity to replace the words you spoke.

Words and hearts should be handled with care for words when spoken and hearts when broken are the hardest things to repair. Be sure to ‘taste’ your words before you spit them out.

Now, the question is, if you were the victim of verbal, mental and emotional abuse, how can you win back your dignity and confidence?

DECIDE Enough is enough! Decide and resolve to protect yourself from these abusive patterns.

You need to protect & love yourself. This abuse will not stop unless you decide to do something about it. Wake up, stand on your ground and reject those abuses against you.

Maybe you’re thinking, “Who will change my spouse or my partner, I am the only person who can help him change and understand.” May I ask, “How can you help others if you cannot help yourself?”

Prioritize yourself before your prioritize others.

Maybe you’re asking, ‘do you mean to say I should leave my spouse?’. No, the only time you should consider leaving is when there’s a threat to your life and your kids. Okay, you’ve decided to protect yourself from these abuses,

now, what practical steps can you do: 1. Talk to your spouse about what you’re feeling and the possible consequences both of you can experience if this continues.

2. Do not absorb all the ‘painful words’ your spouse is telling you. Allow it to enter with your left ear then let it go out with your right ear. Don’t let it dwell in your heart and mind, just let it go. It will not help you anyway. So if your spouse is throwing ‘trashes’ on you, don’t store it, throw it away. Don’t keep it.

3. Let those ‘negative statements’ challenge and motivate you to excel more in everything. Prove your spouse wrong by living victoriously.

BREAK THE CYCLE Try to determine how and when the abuse started. Know its source. Maybe it all starts from a minor and petty disagreement, needs that weren’t met, unfulfilled expectations, unresolved issues from the past, a bad habit he/she inherited from his/her family, lack of attention, etc. Know its roots, break it, and reconcile by appeasing the victim.

SEEK HELP You can’t deal with this alone. Admit to yourself that you need help. Tell someone you trust; who can take extensive measures to protect your safety and privacy, such as your doctor or a professional counsellor. A professional counsellor can help you understand what you’re going through and can help you get out of that situation (being abused). Find a support group too that can provide information, a place to stay, counseling and emotional support, as well as point you to legal help.

You also need spiritual and emotional strength. Join a church fellowship/community, a small group or a bible study group that can pray and help you as you go through this season of your life.

BELIEVE IN THE TRUTH, NOT IN A LIE Never believe to what the person is telling you because that’s not the truth.

Move this World has discovered that according to studies, there were 34 percent fewer incident reports for schools engaged in Move this World program and 80 percent decrease in student suspensions, dropping from 52 to 16 in one year in one school for instance.

According to Ragandang, mesosystemic interventions such as what they are doing have shown success comparable to efforts to effect individual change.

Empathy education will also develop leadership growth in children. The development of empathic abilities aids in communication and social bonding, leading to a change in attitudes toward diversity, including a deeper awareness of one’s culture which can lead to the identification of a common humanity.

“Conciliatory gestures such as an outstretched hand, an embrace, a kiss and a smile are behaviors aimed at reducing violent behavior,” Ragandang

said.

He added that it is critical for teachers to be exposed in empathy education because they “can raise the larger community’s consciousness of the role and importance of empathy in social transactions.”

Move this World also has chapters in Baltimore, Newark, New York City, Washington (DC), Colombia and Germany.

On the other hand, Rebirth Outdoor Trekkers and Adventurers (ROTA) Philippines, Inc. is a non-government organization (NGO) composed of mountaineers and volunteers, mostly based in Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro City. The organization has been in existence since 2010 with advocacies focusing on nature and nurture.

ROTA Philippines, Inc. started with “nature” programs on tree growing and waste management, later evolving to include “nurture” programs on health and education. The organization also actively participates in disaster response and fund-raising for children with medical needs. They promote adventure, enjoyment, reforestation and safety. They welcome new members who are interested in their nurturenature related outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, Green Hand is an Indahag-based group which is promoting gardening in schools. They are trying to replicate their project to other schools and barangays as well.

These ten youth groups have bested other organizations in Mindanao, proving that the Filipino youth have what it takes to solve different problems of society. All of them are composed of at least 15 members, more than half of which are between 15 to 30 yeas old.

The entries will be judged based on the following criteria: impact of project entry on stakeholders, harnessing the spirit of volunteerism and citizenship, creativity and innovation, and sustainability and effective use of resources.

TAYO is the Philippines’ only award giving body that recognizes and supports the outstanding contributions of youth organizations to the country. Since it started in 2002, TAYO Awards Foundation, Inc. has successfully established itself as the country’s only award giving body that recognizes and supports the outstanding contributions of youth organizations to the country. To date, more than a thousand youth organizations have joined the search and are now part of the growing network of the youth foundation.

TAYO Awards Foundation, Inc., the National Youth Commission and Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV organize the search.
