Salvador Bernal’s Design the Stage visits XU museum Story and Photos by MARK FRANCISCO, Assistant Lifestyle Editor

T

he more than a dozen works of the late National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal in maquette scale models are currently on display at Xavier University’s Museo de Oro, particularly at the Fr. Francisco Demetrio Gallery, until November 8.

The aptly-titled Badong Designs the Stage is the first traveling exhibit that is featured at Fr. Francisco Demetrio Gallery which opened only less than a month ago.

Bernal graduated cum laude at Ateneo de Manila University way back in the 1950s and initially started his career as a poet.

But he soon discov-

ered that his calling is really into set design so by 1968, he carved his very first professional work. By 1975, Bernal set up shop in Dapitan City. From 1975 through 1990, he became the resident production designer of Ballet Philippines, witnessing a colorful career that spans two decades.

From Encantada to classical ballet, from traditional to modern dance, Bernal has designed his sets with gusto prolifically. Sensitive to the budget limitations of local productions, he harnessed the design protocol of inexpensive local materials, pioneering or maximizing the use of bamboo, raw abaca and abaca fiber,

hemp twine, rattan chain links and gauze cacha.

The Cagayan de Oro stopover is the seventh for Badong Designs the Stage which has been touring since 2013. Since his passing in 2011, Bernal has been assisted in making the scale designs by three of his closest friends and collaborators – Dr. Nicanor Tiongson and proteges Gino Gonzales and Ricardo Cruz. Also presented at the exhibit are dioramas, costumes and

video excerpts of actual productions.

One parent wants to teach the kids to pray to this ‘god’ and the other one teaches another one.

Like in my case, I am 100% Filipino-Chinese. My wife is a Filipina from Tiaong, Quezon. We formed and created our own rules and guidelines on how we are going to handle our differences.

You will experience a lot of adjustments and teaching moments that will better you not just as a couple but also as a person. You will have to learn and unlearn.

Puericulture, anyone?

I’M supposed to write about Halloween but since I have already written a piece about that a few days back, I’m gonna discuss puericulture instead. So what exactly is puericulture? Is it the culture found exclusively in Puerto, Cagayan de Oro? Is it akin to vermiculture? Nah, neither of the two. Puericulture is simply a synonym for parenting.

Earlier this month, councilors here in CDO lobbied for a Parent Responsibility Code to be approved so parents of delinquent minors will be held responsible for the erring actions of their kids (at least those who are traced to still have their parents

with them). The clamor of the councilors started after gangs of youth hoodlums were discovered at a public elementary school. The councilors were perplexed on how the actions of these school kids were tolerated by the parents to say the most or they simply didn’t care on whether their child was already into gang stuff to say the least.

Parents are not wholly to be blamed. Media specifically Star Cinema and Wattpad have already glamorized the existence of delinquent youth in our society and transformed these gangsters into romantic heroes. Of course, She’s Dating the
