M City Cagayan de Oro held its Christmas launch for this year last Saturday, unveiling its Yuletide tableau for shoppers to marvel at and have their pictures taken with Santa.

The tableau aptly called Santa’s Toy Shop has another purpose that will surely delight shoppers. According to mall manager Clara Elizaga, shoppers who will bring out their phones, take a selfie or a photo with family and friends at Santa’s Toy Shop and post them online with the accompanying hashtag #MerrySMChristmas will have chance to receive awesome goodies. But be creative since SM will only hand out the perks to th4e most

awesome photos!

During the unveiling of Santa’s Toy Shop, Vice Mayor Caesar Ian Acenas churned out a traditional Christmas hit accompanied by pianist David Alba. He then went on praising SM for “really helping a lot” in the development of Cagayan de Oro. Forty lucky children from Xavier Ecoville received gifts from Santa in this occasion. At the same time, SM City Cagayan de Oro is selling SM Bears of Joy. For only P200, you have one of those cute bears to keep while another will be donated to Balay Canossa here in Cagaya de Oro City.

Ecoville mothers at the frontline

“We will use the MONEY to provide more skills trainings, production equipment and financial literacy trainings for the sewing enterprise of Xavier Ecoville. These will hopefully enhance the quality of the bags,” Guantero answered when asked about their plans on the grant.

SKETCH aims to provide livelihood opportunities for the families affected by Typhoon Sendong in December 2011. They tapped a group of 30 mothers from the XE community for the production of the recyclable bags.

These women have been paid for each bag that they produce. Thus,

more bags would mean more income for them.

“We chose to help Xavier Ecoville community because, like the Ecoville residents, two of our group mates are also Sendong survivors. The Xavier Ecoville community is also close to our hearts,” said Anne Sebastian, the partner of Guantero in the camp.

XE is a resettlement community for the Tropical Storm Sendong survivors located at Barangay Lumbia, located 60 kilometers away from the city proper.

“We wanted to help the society and the community,” Guantero added.

They also admitted that they drew their inspiration from Arsenio Sebastian, Ann’s grandfather who takes his active involvement as the livelihood development consultant of the Xavier Ecoville Project.

Hope for a bigger market

The Changemaker camp was initiated by the British Council, an international organization for educational opportunities and cultural relation, in partnership with the Peace and Equity Foundation (PEF), a staunch supporter of social entrepreneurship.

SKETCH bags started as a feasibility study requirement for their course. The bags were made from katsa cloth.

They were then chosen

by School of Business and Management to represent XU in the camp.

Currently, SKETCH bags has already produced and marketed a total of 47O bags. They are targeting to sell 900 bags by the end of this year. They will be distrib-

uting the bags to various organizations and companies.

They are hoping that through their efforts the sewing enterprise will be sustained and there will be a bigger market for the bags.

The other members of the SKETCH bags feasibility study group who were not able to join the camp due to the limited number of participants were Raymond Sabio, Lichelle Salgados, Ted Povadora, Ian Son and Mark Amper.

Other social enterprises from XU were Knots and Woods, another FS group who produced shoes made out of abaca fiber, and ROOFosition of the XEP which was aimed at developing a technology for urban gardening and maximizing the spaces on the roofs. PR

Building the longest music playlist WHEN local music stations tend to level down with the masses and lose their dignity by rotating baduy and old tracks, you don’t have any other recourse but to build your own music playlist. Over the years, technology has gone up rapidly allowing people to have their own music playlist beyond their iPod or phone platforms.

My very first downloads started in 2006. It was the time when my good chum Jigger Jerusalem’s column The Beat was at its peak. I was one of the avid followers of his indie music reviews.

It was also the time when

LAUNCHcast was the most favored online radio, replacing annoying FM stations which churn out lewd dramatized segments and other trash talk in between commercials and bubblegum pop. But LAUNCHCcast’s custom stations needed to be refreshed and updated every now and then that I decided to download mp3 files to my hard drive in my personal computer at home. From a humble collection of more than a dozen songs (Danko’s First Date, Shawn Colvin’s When You Know, Natalie’s Where Are You, etc.), my playlist now totals 31.9GB

of 6,599 tracks and counting in one single folder! I may well be qualified to hold a Guinness for the longest audio playlist set in a personal computer!

How have I reached that mind-numbing number? Each week, singles are released both here and in the United States and I try to download all of them. So how do I track the latest released singles?

I go to the countdown page of Magic 89.3’s website, then on to the website of Myx to Billboard and lastly to BBC Music. How do I download songs? I simply search the song on YouTube, copy the URL

of the link and paste it on a YouTube mp3 converter and voila! I got the download!

I may not know how to dance or sing, I may not know how to play the piano or guitar, heck I may not know how to read a note but I love music.

COC-Phinma grad is No. 7 in Mechanical Engineering licensure exam

OC-Phinma alumnus Ernest Vincent Rasonable, 21, ranked seventh in the Certified Plant Mechanic Licensure Examination given by the Board of Mechanical Engineering last October 7 to 8.

Garnering a score of 92.60, Rasonable soared high among 2,959 other examinees in the country and for that,he was awarded P30,000 by his alma mater in gratitude to his sterling performance in the exam.

The rite was held recently at Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive School (Mogchs), which was also his high school mater.

During the ceremony held at the school’s covered court, the hundreds of senior students from Mogchs applauded as their beloved

alumnus walked to the stage to receive the award from Engr. Jocel Dimcauta, the dean of the College of Engineering.

In his thanksgiving speech, Rasonable said that sheer discipline during the four months of review in Cebu City was the key on why he soared high in the exam.

“In a big city like Cebu, wala ko nagpatintal og lulinghayaw. Gani, kas-a ra ko nakasuroy sa mga mall, kato rang first day of review. The rest of the days I dedicated praying, studying, eating and sleeping,” Rasonable said.

Rasonable then went on exhorted the Mogchs seniors to follow their heart in choosing the college program they’ll enroll in instead of caving in to the dictates of others “because

if you follow your passion, then you will excel at it.”

“Also choose a college that has a track record in churning out topnotchers, a college such as COC-Phinma,” he added to the applause of the crowd, which is also composed of Rasonable’s mentors both during his secondary and tertiary years.

Mogchs and COC-Phinma engineering mentors stood side by side and almost tearyeyed as their beloved student talked through his speech.

Meanwhile, students in the crowd in hushed whispers encouraged each other to take the entrance exam at COCPhinma when the time comes.

No one was happier than Mogchs 4th Year Level chairman Dr. Helen Maasin.

“The fruits of our labor here in Mogchs has ripened.

Engr. Ernest is living proof that Mogchs indeed produces some of the best citizens in CDO. And what Mogchs has produced, COC-Phinma has sharpened even more,” Maasin said.

In her speech, Dimacuta returned the compliment by saying that “Mogchs has already provided you the necessary foundation to make it to college.”

This remark catapulted the Mogchs to give their wildest cheers even more.

The son of a beer dealer and a real estate agent, Rason-

able was a presidential scholar at COC-Phinma and graduated cum laude last March.

His younger sister takes

inspiration from him and is now enrolled at COCPhinma.

The other board passers from COC-Phinma were

XU students awarded P100,000 grant by British Council

SKETCH Bags, a social enterprise by BusinessAdministration seniors of Xavier University for the benefit of the Xavier Ecoville community, was awarded a Php100,000 seed grant at the British Council’s I am a Changemaker camp in Tagbilaran City, Bohol on October 25.

“It was a great experience. It was overwhelm-

ing,” said Zuein Guantero, the general manager of the SKETCH bags .

With this year’s theme “Resiliency, Reconstruction and Recovery,” the I am a Changemaker camp gathered young social entrepreneurs throughout the Philippines in a 7-day ideation camp to wid-

en their knowledge in social entrepreneurship through seminars, trainings and site visits.

The five best social enterprises were then bestowed with funding to be used for either the improvement or establish-
