High school students right age to be empowered consumers – DTI

High school students are about the right age to learn consumer rights.

This according to Ma. Eliza A. Pabillore, provincial director of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Misamis Oriental during a Provincial Quiz Bee recently held in the city in celebration of the Consumer Welfare Month.

“An educated consumer is an empowered consumer,” said Pabillore.

Pabillore said that if we know our rights and responsibilities as consumers, then we would know what to demand for and what to do in case we are faced with certain violation of our rights.

She said that we have to start early and that high school level is the right age for one to become an empowered consumer.

questions that relate to trade and industry laws in the country, consumer rights and consumer information.

The quiz started from easy to difficult.

A total of 53 private and public schools participated.

In the end, Marjorie B. Valiente of Sugbongcogon

National High School got the third place.

Second place went to Severino P. Cabala of Cugman National High School while first place went to Patricia Beatriz Villamil of Xavier University High School.

HIGALAAY was conceptualized by Mayor Oscar Moreno’s eldest Sean Oliver and realized last fiesta.

The brainchild to promote Cagayan de Oro was so successful that Sean is now contemplating to expand his vision and promote the city, targeting tourists and investors all year round.

And so, another vision is born – the Higalaay Rafton.

For one, Sean knows too well that the whitewater rafting

industry here is the best face to promote our city outside.

Then President Gloria Arroyo has tried it. Other well-known celebrities have followed.

Sean too is aware that Cagayanons love to keep fit. They love to sweat out and run.

Almost every week, marathons are held everywhere. This got Sean thinking, “What if we merge a rafting and marathon tourney into one?”

The result? A Higalaay Rafton idea is now underway.

These days, Sean Oliver Moreno keeps himself busy so that Higalaay Rafton will get realized by February 2015. It will be timed with the arrival of a European-based cruise ship which will have a port of call in Macabalan that month.

The proposed Higalaay Rafton will have 20 minutes of rafting at the Cagayan rapids followed by a marathon of varying categories: 1k, 3k and 5k.

“This will be the first of its kind in the world – a whitewater rafting and marathon combined,” Sean beams.

This early, Sean is confident that their efforts in the Higalaay Movement will get recognized by the International Rafting Federation.

“Because we are inculcat-

ing the Higalaay brand in our tournament, I am sure that we will garner a lot of tourists in our city by 2015,” he said.

The rafting-running event will be followed with an afterparty unlike any other that has invaded CDO so far: there will be fireworks, a Zumba session, a magic show and dig this: the very first search of an official Higalaay drink.

According to Moreno, we have so many talented baristas here who can concoct original recipe cocktails made of indigenous ingredients. These will be judged by top-caliber chefs and gourmands in the country.

The Yuletide season is just around the corner. After that, it’s the Year of the Sheep. The city’s First Son is looking for a promising annum ahead.

Someone once told me that God wants to bless us and prosper us and not to harm us.

But before He can bless us, we need to become wise and good stewards.

This made a lot of sense and God has indeed blessed me and my family tremendously ever since I followed the truth.

This also prompted me to write a book about spiritual finance, “Rich God Poor God” on why God wants you to prosper.

I would like to assure you how my book had made an impact to a blogger.

This is from: I am a loving wife, a devoted mother and sister, a pet lover and God’s forever work in action. The quotes here are from people who inspire me, some of them great, some of them ordinary people. Other times, I get them from my two smart daughters and from my own personal thoughts.

But one thing I know... they all came from the heart!

We must ask God if we should continually give to them.

As wise farmers, we must sow on good soil.

Good soil are people, individuals or groups who are productive or who are doing the work for God. If we sow on good soil, definitely the seed that we have sown will grow and bear much fruit.”

My Learnings Giving is always equated with loving. Giving should only come from our heart. “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. “(2 Corinthians 9:7) But giving wisely is a more loving act than just giving to anyone else.

THIS week has been rocking with scandals in our beloved City of Golden Friendship.

What gives? We’re supposed to be happy that an international cruise ship will dock our shores in February. (Watch out the details on that on a separate column/article.) We’re supposed to be excited that an international rafting tourney will be pushed through by early next year. Heck, we don’t need this kind of news.

It’s not just the government’s role to reform their constituents. Sure, it’s the government’s responsibility to craft laws regarding decency and morals.

And it’s the government’s role to implement these laws. But it’s not just the government’s task to shape us up. The prime responsibility to discipline

ourselves comes from within.

No religion nor civil authority can dictate us whom we should have sex with provided it is consensual. But for Pete’s sake, shed the uniform.

Not too long ago, I wrote an observation that I made of some female college students drinking in plain sight in street corners here in downtown CDO. Now it gets worse. There are reliable reports out that there’s another videotaped sex act that was leaked and what’s making it worse is that the female subject in the video had her uniform on, prominently revealing the school seal. Oh jeez! If there’s anything more damning than that, I don’t know what is!
