Arrested former Marawi mayor denies Maute links

CAGAYAN de Oro City— The former mayor of Marawi City who was arrested by authorities Wednesday night denied he was involved in Marawi rebellion instigated by the dreaded Maute terrorists group.

Former mayor Fahad Salic was arrested by the police by virtue of an arrest warrant against him for his alleged involvement in the Marawi rebellion, Superintendent Lemuel Gonda, spokesman of the Police Regional Office 10, said.

He was arrested on Wednesday night, at a police checkpoint in Barangay San Martin, Villanueva town, Misamis Oriental, while on his way to his residence, here.

“He (Salic) was arrested because of an arrest order issued against him by the Department of National Defense, through Arrest

Order No. 2, where his name is included for involvement in the Marawi rebellion,” Gonda said. Salic denied the accusation.

“I am not involved in that (Marawi siege). I’ve been in Manila even before the trouble in Marawi started,” Salic told the local media, at the Criminal Investigation and D etent ion Group (CIDG).

Regencia urges Iliganons to remain vigilant

ILIGAN City Mayor Celso Regencia on Monday urged residents in the city to remain vigilant in line with the Marawi crisis.

In a speech delivered during the flag-raising ceremony, Regencia said he will do his best to protect the residents and evacuees.

The mayor was also alarmed over the report of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) regarding the presence of about 1,200 foreign terrorists roaming around Lanao del Sur. These foreigners, he said were members of the ISIS from other countries particularly Iraq who have absconded from their country to seek shelter in the Philippines because the military have defeated and already controlled their camps.

Regencia said the people of Iligan must be vigilant and observant at all times.

He also called on the people of Iligan City to unite against terrorism and all forms of criminality.

“Dugay pa kini maundang, ma neutralize, because there are groups and politicians nga nakialam na ani kay nadisturbo na pati ilang mga negosyo sa shabu,” said Regencia without naming names.

announced that the city population rose by 60 percent due to the exodus of evacuees coming from Marawi and nearby areas.

There are two hundred thousand people lived in Marawi city, and 131,000 of these population have fled to Iligan seeking for refuge.

As of press time, the Buruun School of Fisheries have now 844 evacuees, Maria Christina falls has a total number 1172 evacuees, Santa Elena has 1143, Tibanga Gym has 380, Buruun Gym has 19 number of evacuees.

On one hand, Regencia

said he was tagged as Maranao’s hater or Muslim hater, but at least now, he can prove to his detractors that he never discriminates Muslims/Maranaos from Christians and he never hated them ever since.

Regencia said what is currently happening in Marawi and the neighboring cities and municipalities is not a fight between Muslims and Christians nor religions. He said that what happened is a fight between good and evil.

the Indigenous people and their land.

So-ong said sitio Limunsudan has been deprived of improvement and benefits and progress that the government should provide for the people of Limunsudan.

It has been 60 years, he said that there was never been security to uphold the lumads, Limunsudan is filled with Higaon tribes and Christians.

So-ong admitted that sitio Limunsudan was acknowledged by other regions like Cagayan de Oro Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon. However, the

local government of Iligan was the first to acknowledge and rendered provision of money, construct schools and put up detailed check points.

Supt. Leony Roy Ga, Iligan City police director, said that they will support the administration of Mayor Regencia for putting up detachment in sitio Limunsudan. DA-10 conducts InfoCar in Camiguin

Mambajao, Camiguin – The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO10) continues its advocacy of informing farmers and fisherfolks about the different programs and services in the agriculture sector through its conduct of an Information Caravan, in the province of Camiguin. Around 200 farmer-participants attended the event which was spearheaded by the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section (RAFIS) of DA along with its partner agencies and the provincial agriculture and veterinary offices of Camiguin. RAFIS Chief Mary Grace B. Sta.Elena encouraged the farmer-associations to be active and to avail of the different programs and services of the government since these projects will not be given

to farmers without the submission of letter of intent. With the theme, “Insaktong Impormasyon sa Agrikultura, Ka-abag sa Mabungahong Pagpanguma,” an open forum was held following the presentations to hear out the issues and concerns of the participants. One of the issues raised was the suggestion for the Philippine Crop Insurance, Corp. (PCIC) to visit Camiguin at least once a week to tend to farmers and fishefolks’ insurance fees so that farmers would not have to go to the agency’s office in Cagayan de Oro City. 2 hydroelectric power plant projects ready to take off in Ilocos Norte

Two more hydroelectric power plants are set to break ground in the mountainous towns of S olsona and Nueva Era courtesy of FD C Utilities Inc., a subsidiar y of Filinvest Development C orporation.

FD C representatives Engr. Neil Guillen and Mirable May Perez paid a courtesy call on members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on Wednesday afternoon to seek their support to the project.

Since 2013, the Department of Energ y has identified Madongan 1 and 2 in Nueva Era and S olsona potential sites for run-of-river-type hydroelectric power development projects.

Under an open and competitive selection process, FD C expressed interest to pursue said projects this year.

According to Guillen, FD C is set to develop hydroelectric power plants in the upstream of Madongan 1 with a capacity of 11 megawatts (MW), Madongan 2 with 10.4 MW and 5.9 MW in S olsona river.

Long before the establishment of the first wind farm along the Bangui bay in 2005, Ilocos Norte’s status as the center of renewable energ y (RE) started in the 1980s.

Initiated by the Ilocos Norte Electric C ooperative, the Agua

Grande mini-hydro power plant in Pancian and Pasaleng rivers supplies clean and cheap power to more than 17,000 households in Pagudpud and nearby villages in Bangui, Pasuquin and Bacarra towns. The plant has an actual production of 1 megawatt because only two of the five water turbines are running.

Unlike the wind power farms which need a black start power from the National Grid C orporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to produce and transfer energ y to consumers, hydroelectric plants can stand alone and it can be used as a black start power source, Guillen clarified when asked by members of the Ilocos Norte board.

Hydro power plants generate power depending on the volume of rainfall that f lows down the river.

Power produced from the hydro is cheaper by 40 percent.

In support of the national government’s vision to accelerate RE development in the countr y, which seeks to curb dependence on volatile and often polluting energ y sources such as coal and petroleum, the D OE has been encouraging the development of hydropower resources, giving special incentives to proponents and investors.

CEB orders seven more Airbus A321CEO aircraft for USD 812 M

C

ebu Pacific (CEB) has ordered seven Airbus aircraft in line with its efforts to further increase its capacity requirements.

The seven Airbus A321CEO (Current Engine Operation) planes, which cost USD 812 million are slated for delivery

by March 2018 and will be on top of its existing purchase order of 32 A321NEO (NEO) aircraft,which was deferred due to delays with the Pratt and Whitney engines selected to power the aircraft.

The latter is scheduled to be delivered starting fourth quarter of 2018 until

2022 instead of its original schedule on September 2017 to 2021.

“We have decided to take a conservative approach to the introduction of the A321NEO into our operations. We remain confident that Pratt & Whitney will address all issues on the GTF engine. There is, however, the need to increase our current capacity to meet growing domestic and regional network demand, thus the A321CEO order,” CEB Chief Finance Officer Andrew Huang said in a statement.

For his part, Cebu Pacific President and CEO

Lance Gokongwei stated that the acquisition of the A321 aircraft would enable it to increase its capacity on popular routes with lower operating costs.

“We are very excited about adding the A321 to our fleet. The aircraft will enable us to increase capacity on popular routes, while at the same time benefiting from the lowest operating costs in this size category. This will mean more low fares for more customers flying across our domestic and regional network,” according to Gokongwei.

El Salvador City celebrates 6th Charter Day

EL SALVADOR City in Misamis Oriental will be celebrating its 6th Charter Day this June 27 with a Mass early in the morning at 7:00 a.m. and a State of the City Address afterwards to be delivered by Mayor Edgar Lignes.

According to city tourism officer Jeen ClarinLopez, there will also be a Kasalan ng Bayan the day before on June 27 to be officiated by Lignes.

There will be 188 couples who are expected to tie

the knot.

The Charter Day activities were also preceded with the summer-long Dalit sa Barrio where all the 14 barangays in the city were afforded with free basic services like medical, circumcision, dental, legal and veterinary as well as distribution of school kits and seedlings. There was also free gupit and massage for the males and a feeding program for everybody.

Contents of the school kits for kids aging four to nine years old were notebook, eraser, pencil,

sharpener and coloring book. A total of 900 kits were dispersed. Dalit sa Barrio was also supported by the El Salvador City Council led by Vice Mayor Eduardo Ayunting.

Like most of the 23 municipalities of Misamis Oriental, El Salvador City is along the shores of Macajalar Bay. It is bounded on the north by Macajalar Bay, east by the municipality of Opol, on the south by the municipality of Manticao and west by the municipality of Alubijid. It became a city on June 28, 2011.

SECTION 5. - The EEDMO in coordination with the Iligan City Traffic Parking and Management Office (ICTPMO) and the Traffic Engineering Office is hereby required to install traffic signs and markings thereat.

SECTION 6. - The authorized Transport Group/Association Administering the assigned Pay Parking Area is to strictly observed proper sanitation and cleanliness at their area of responsibility.

SECTION 7. - Gambling and other forms of immoral and illegal acts while parking in Parking Area II are strictly prohibited.

SECTION 8. Penalty Clause - Failure by any driver or operator or transport Group or Association to observe park regulations and other prohibitions in this Ordinance as determined by the Iligan City Traffic and Parking Management Office (ICTPMO), shall be meted with the following penalties:

SECTION 11. Repealing Clause - City Ordinance No. 12-5831, City Ordinance No. 15-6331 and all previous ordinances, executive orders, rules and regulations or parts thereof which are inconsistent with this ordinance are hereby repealed and modified accordingly.

SECTION 12. Separability Clause. If, for any reason or reasons, any part or provision of this ordinance shall be held unconstitutional or invalid, other parts or provisions hereof which are not affected thereby shall continue to be in full force and in effect.

SECTION 13. Effectivity. - This Ordinance shall take effect ten days (10) after the publication of a local newspaper, as set forth by law.

good mood. The winners are talkative and smiling some of them even counting cash.

The bad effects of gambling is the owner of the place get richer while the players get poorer, the latter almost always disposes of their assets or property to finance an ugly habit.

Some gamblers who do not have properties resort to stealing or other crimes to have cash for the games.

It is really terrible and we never realized such foolish effects of stupid games.

In short, most gamblers are having difficulties maintaining their families. Their children go astray and undisciplined and even become school dropouts.

In some cases it is the husband and wife who go to gambling places leaving the homes to the young kids.

There is going to be a failure in the homes as well a in the children. The home is like being hit by a giant tidal wave and everything goes down forever.

The worst is gambling is addictive and like smoking or drug attachment, is very hard to cut off and away from it. I should know because I once was addicted to cigarette smoking and I really had hard time breaking away from it.

I had to stop the habit because my children were entering the secondary education and money for cigarettes was not part of my budget.

Thanks God I was able to get out of smoking habit and unwittingly realized its bad effects to my health.

The torment suffered by poor women in crowded evacuation centers has no equal. It is worse than the rest of the evacuees.

They have no privacy to attend to their bodily needs. (I have observed in countless relief operations that relief goods do not usually include lady undies and napkins). You could just imagine the anxiety and discomfort of the unfortunate women in the situation they found themselves.

The well-off, although similarly harassed, traumatized and scarred by the incident were quick to leave the conflict area in their private vehicles.

They don’t have to get out from their SUVs and expose themselves to the elements for the endless body or baggage inspection in military checkpoints, unlike those taking government evacuation transports or public vehicles.

They don’t stop at evacuation centers but immediately seek comfort in hotels or in their second homes either in the nearby city of Iligan or Cagayan de Oro. While those not as able, seek refuge and accommodation in the homes of well-to-do relatives in the two cities.

Their sick are immediately rushed to trustworthy hospitals and attended to.

Not so with the poor.

If they have relatives in other places, they are also mostly poor like them and are not in a position to extend much needed help, however willing they may be, to ease their discomfort and suffering. Hence, they could not leave evacuation facilities at will to end their nightmares.

It’s really bad to be poor.

Globally Known Destinations However, Budiongan stressed that the success of KIA is mostly due to the attraction of its tourist destination, most notably Boracay, which is accessible by van and ferry through Caticlan, not all the tourists and visitors going through KIA proceed to Boracay.

“It’s equally important we make our flagship destinations better known in social media and at par with foreign destinations in Asia,” he said. “The region has excellent upland developments and beach resorts which can be easily accessed through Laguindingan Airport and emerging big ticket destinations such as the Seven Seas Waterpark and Resort would endear

our region even more to domestic and even regional tourists looking out for sand, surf and sun.”

It’s only when existing and emerging tourist destinations, packaged by domestic and foreign tour operators, gain parity in the social media and the highly competitive digital tourism market, that foreign airlines would consider Laguindingan worthy of the passenger traffic it can generate for their business.

Duterte reminds troops not to waiver in commitment vs terror President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday called on the men and women of the Armed Forces to never waiver in their commitment to protect the Republic from all threats such as terrorism.

In his visit to the 1st Me c h a n i z e d I n f a n t r y ( Ma aas a han ) Br ig a d e, Mechanized Infantry Division of the Philippine Army in Camp Leono, Barangay Kalandagan, Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat, President Duterte reminded the soldiers of their sworn duty to protect the Filipino people and the Republic.

He also said operations in Marawi City will be wrapping up in the next few days.

“As we retake the beautiful city of Marawi from the clutches of the enemy, I call upon our troops to remain steadfast in performing their sworn duty to protect our people,” he said.

“I ask you to never waiver in your commitment to defend the Republic from all threats especially of terrorism, criminality, and insurgency,” he added.

The President also commended the Armed Forces for their contributions to fight terror and bring back peace to Marawi City.

“The experience of the 1st Mechanized Brigade in facing various threats, groups in Mindanao and Sultan Kudarat will greatly contribute to our efforts of completely crush the rebels hiding throughout the city,” he said.

“As our forces valiantly pursue the mission of quelling rebellion in Marawi City, let me assure our soldiers that the Filipino people is completely behind you in this fight to restore order and maintain peace in Mindanao,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Duterte reiterated his promise to raise PHP50 billion to take care of the education of the soldiers’ children.

He said he will set up an independent foundation for the other benefits of the soldiers.
