Three NPA rebels captured in chance meet with foot soldiers

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur -- Army soldiers who were on foot patrol in a remote village of Veruela town captured three communist guerrillas when they surprisingly chanced upon them carrying sack loads of firearms and ammunitions.

The platoon of 26th Infantry Battalion soldiers took advantage of the situation and in no time collared the New Peoples Army rebels known as Bernie S Perez @ Ariel, Joel S Perez @ Jo and Nino S Perez @ Onin. Region 12 absorbs students displaced by Marawi siege GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- At least 169 learners or students who were displaced by the continuing conflict in Marawi City have been accommodated by public schools in parts of Region 12.

Dr. Arturo Bayocot, Department of Education (DepEd)-Region 12 director,

said Tuesday such figure was based on the enrollment data received by the regional office for transferees from Marawi City.

He said the Cotabato City schools division reported the most number of transferees from Marawi with 50, followed by Sultan Kudarat division with 35.

The remaining number is pro-rated to other areas, among them in Koronadal City and this city, he said.

Ozamiz peace and order council to ask NBI to probe shooting of 9 persons

OZAMIZ CITY -- The shooting to death of nine persons by the local police last week will be the subject of an investigation as the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) is set to request the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to verify if those who were killed were actual members of a robbery gang after their relatives and neighbors asserted their innocence.

In a report, the Ozamiz city police said a group of armed personalities engaged them in a firefight resulting to the bloodbath.

Six other individuals, a few of them women, were arrested following the encounter.

Police said they were conducting a follow-up operation when they chanced upon some members of the group in Barangays Cavinte and Balintawak last Thursday, June 1, that led to the shooting of the suspects.

Taken from the suspects were firearms, including a shotgun, M16 rifle, pistols and ammunitions of various types, and packets of what authorities believed as shabu.

Manzano, Joel Espina Mira, Jerry Manzano, Romeo Libaton, Lito Manisan, Alfie Mahusay, Anjun Simene, Consorcio Rubio Sr. and a still unidentified individual.

Arrested were Jonner Libatug, Laureto Ugmad, Janice Manzano, Carmelita Manzano, Monaliza Ugmad, and PO2 Diosdao Hinoctan Jr. Hinoctan is said to be a member of the Tangub city police, who was present together with the suspects at the crime scene.

But eyewitnesses’ accounts said the men who were shot to death were just having a drinking session that day.

The victims’ neighbors have also told local officials that most of those killed were peasants who were just enjoying themselves.

Ozamiz Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog said the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) found the testimonies of those who witnessed the shooting as sufficient enough for the NBI to conduct an investigation.

Parojinog, the CPOC vice chair, said the NBI must take into consideration the version of the people in Cavinte and Balintawak who saw the incident.

Lopez: with Martial Law in effect, prices in Iligan City should remain stable ILIGAN CITY—In response to a report that prices of goods, specifically rice, have suddenly doubled, reaching almost PhP 5,000.00 per 50 kilograms, National Price Coordinating Council (NPCC) Chair and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez, DTI Undersecretary for Consumer Protection Ted Pascua and DTI-Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau officials immediately conducted ground inspection

DAVAO CITY -- The coast guards of Japan and the Philippines performed antipiracy exercises in Davao Gulf last Saturday (June 3).

The Japan Coast Guard vessel “Echigo” along with Philippine Coast Guard ships BRP Capones, BRP Tubbataha, BRP Pampanga and MCS 3003 participated in the exercises.

Major decision EVERY now and then, we make decisions, either in our family, our career or even in our own life. And consulting people is one way of ascertaining the pros and cons of matter that we are called upon to decide and make a choice.

Indeed, making a choice is a decision. And in the final analysis, it is only us who can make the final decision.

Whether it will succeed or fail, we are to blame only ourselves.

As far as I can recall, the major decision I made was when I decided to leave my parents even as I was still a teenager so I can pursue my college education. I

Besides, I could foresee then that if I would join my classmates in trying our luck in the jungles of Manila, the only job we could land in would either be as factory worker or laborer. And personally, I hate myself landing in such kind of job. Even if I am a son of a poor family, yet I have ambitions in life.

So I braved myself all the challenges coming my way as I was struggling to finish my college education. So for four years, my routine was to do household chores during the day, and attend classes in the afternoon until the evenings. And it was not as easy as walking in the park. And my perseverance paid up. And months after finishing my college education, I landed a job in the local government.

As I reflect today of my journey based on that hard and tough decision I made even when I was still a teenager, I can say that it was not a bad decision after all.

Such a decision catapulted me to the pedestal which I call success. This may be a small success compared with the achievement of others.

am a son of a poor farmer in Southern Leyte. They could not afford to send me to college. So I packed up my things and went to Mindanao. I stayed in my grandfather in Cagayan de Oro and studied college as a working student. While most of my high school classmates went to Manila to find a job, I went to Mindanao with high hopes I can finish a degree.

It was a tough and hard decision I made. I was still too young to be away from the guidance of my parents.

For me, I still need the parental care of my parents.

But at the back of my mind, I was determined and willing to be away from my parents and brothers in exchange for a bright future.

After all, if I would succeed, it would be their pride.

-ooo PARIS CLIMATE PACT IS BOUND TO FAIL, TOO: While the courses of action listed down by the countries that support the Paris climate pact constitute one significant step towards fighting off global warming and climate change, it is important to note that it has completely avoided what the Word of God, the Christian Bible, is saying as the cause of this worldwide environmental degradation.

In an international culture of grossly ignoring what has been written in the Bible for quite some time now, this deliberate avoidance of what it says on many matters clearly has caused a lot of tragedies among mankind. One of

these tragedies is global warming and climate change which the Bible accurately predicted to happen.

That the Bible is being ignored once again in an important international agreement on how to fight environmental destruction such as the Paris climate pact could only lead to the same failures and disappointments all over again, similar to the failures and disappointments that attended previous climate agreements even if trillions of dollars have already been spent on the courses of action launched pursuant to those agreements.

Think a minute…

“A tea bag isn’t worth much until it’s been through some hot water.” There’s a saying in boxing: “Everybody’s got a plan—until they’ve been hit!” Sooner or later, life is going to hit and knock you down. Whether you get back up or not is your choice. Almost all people’s successes are built on their former failures. A very successful man was asked if he had ever failed.

He answered: “Only in life.”

The fact is, even after we’ve been knocked down we can still use our past mistakes

and failures to build a bridge to our success.

You know that you’re the only one who can kill your dream by quitting.

Remember that just falling in the water is not what drowns you; it’s staying down there that does. Just like kites fly high because the wind pushes against them, so problems that oppose you can actually help you succeed, if you choose to believe and use them that way.

There was a man who was the only survivor from a shipwreck. He drifted

to an uninhabited island where he built a hut for his shelter. One evening after he returned from searching for food, he found his little hut on fire. Early the next morning he awoke to find a ship that had come in during the night. Farmer-director Program As one of the highlights, DA in partnership with the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF), launches the Farmer-Director Program designating Regional Agriculture and Fishery Council chairpersons as farmerdirectors of their respective DA regional offices.

Professor Edgardo D. Layug took office as DA-RFO 10’s Farmer-Director for the whole month of May. This activity was launched in order for the private sector to have a quick glimpse of the agency’s operations as it fulfills its mission in helping and empowering farming and fishing communities and private sector to produce enough, accessible and affordable food for every Filipino and a decent income for all. Sustainability crucial in school-based feeding, vegetable gardening programs Report by Stephen Pedroza

In the recent joint visits to a handful of public elementary schools in Cagayan de Oro City, Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s Jose P. Rizal School of Medicine (JPRSM), Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), and the CDO division of the Department of Education (DepEd) saw the importance of sustaining the school-based feeding and vegetable gardening programs toward improving child nutrition.

In the policy brief on “Improving Nutritional Outcomes of School Feeding for Filipino Children,” three major points were fleshed out from the Vegetables Go to School (VGtS) program engagements: (1)

Child nutrition contributes to the country’s overall development. (2) School-based feeding is crucial to the nutritional rehabilitation of children but it is not enough.

(3) Good Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) practices combined with school feeding gives better nutritional rehabilitation results.

“VGtS is an integrated school-based program that includes school gardening, WaSH, hygiene intervention, and feeding for Filipino children,” said Dr. Jana Gerold of Swiss TPH. “Based on the evidence in the Philippines and all the other countries, we have seen that only the integrated approach actually harnesses significant findings in terms of contributing to child

Paradigm shift in child nutrition In the Philippines, child nutrition remains a tough challenge. According to the Global Nutrition Report 2016, the country ranks globally among the top ten for stunted children. Three out of 10 school children aged 6 to 12 years old remain short for their age (stunted) and have not attained the optimum weight for their heights (wasted).

In addressing this issue, schools play an important role in nutrition rehabilitation.

According to the VGtS researchers, part of achieving sustainability is addressing the constraints

in school-based feeding programs, which include the following: a) Inadequate administrative support for the school-based feeding program as evidenced by frequent re-shuffling of teachers in charge of feeding and gardening, inadequate training of replacement teachers, and lack of proper equipment to monitor weight and height. b) Water and WaSH facilities should be available in all schools. Many schools have no running water, or at best, water comes for a few hours on certain days of the week. When there is no running water, hand washing facilities and toilets remain unused and children are not able to benefit from healthy practices. c) School gardens contribute to good nutritional rehabilitation outcomes.

Many schools have vegetable gardens which do not last the whole school year (10 months) because of many reasons, such as lack of water, inadequate space for a garden, and lack of a teacher-in-charge of gardening.

The VGtS Program also emphasized the fact that schools which have yearround vegetable gardens showed a better gain in BMI for children who were enrolled in the school-based feeding program compared to schools which did not have year-round vegetable gardens.

Beyond nutrition Nutritional rehabilitation directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

Dr. Gina S. Itchon, director of Xavier Ateneo School of Medicine – Sustainable Sanitation (SuSan) Cen-

ter and VGtS-Philippines country manager, shared how the program is honing future doctors in community medicine.

“We used this program to complete the education of our medical students.

I brought my first-year students to some of the schools so that they will see the actual situation of nutrition among schoolchildren,” Dr. Itchon said.

“It’s one thing to learn it from the books, what is ideal in the classroom and in the laboratory. But it’s another thing to see the face of a malnourished child. I think that is very important for us to build doctors who will be relevant and who will work for the

Philippines, especially here in Cagayan de Oro City,” she continued.

Dr. Itchon hopes that this new breed of doctors, who have been immersed in poor and marginalized communities, will not end up as “doctors for export,” but who will help solve the country’s healthcare problems.

“When I attended the first meeting on VGtS and it was offered to Xavier as a project, I immediately said yes because it’s addressing the pressing issue of malnutrition. It also complements the education of our medical students. Outreach is also university concern for Xavier,” she shared.

being too short for their ages and being too thin for their heights, chronic malnutrition is an urgent national matter which should be addressed. This is the reason why Dr. Gerold, Dr. Itchon, other team members, and project partners believe that sustaining integrated, school-based feeding programs is as crucial as looking for more innovate ways on continually improving the nutrition of Filipinos at the early stage.

The message of VGtS is clear: “Improved nutrition is the platform for progress in health, education, and employment which will eventually help the Philippines achieve sustainable development.”
