MANOLO FORTICH, Bukidnon -- Secretary Jess Dureza of the Office of Presidential Adviser on Peace Process, hailed the work of Army engineers in nation building through its own noble way of imparting peace and nation-building, by building roads and bridges specially in conflict areas and poor hinterland communities who lack the amenities of regular infrastructure enjoyed by their urban counterparts. DAVAO City -- “Pwede ka Housing, Ma’am? Can you be the Housing Secretary?,” President Rodrigo Duterte asked Vice President Leni Robredo on Thursday afternoon, in a televised phone conversation. The offer for Robredo to head the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) with Cabinet rank, came six days after Duterte and Robredo met each other for the first time at the turnover of military command at Camp Aguindaldo and three days after Robredo paid a courtesy call on the President in Malacanang. The HUDCC was also headed by Jejomar Binay and Noli de Castro when they were Vice President to Benigno S. Aquino III and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, respectively. Duterte’s offer to Robredo came 37 days after he told a press conference in Davao City that he was “non-committal” about giving Robredo a Cabinet post because he did not want to offend his friend, former Senator Ferdinand Marcos. “Si Leni, she should understand that she belongs to the opposite side. Stop sending scalawags to Sulu, Basilan, Tawi-tawi. PNP chief urged DAVAO City -- The practice of sending scalawags in the Philippine National Police (PNP) to Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-tawi should stop, especially under a President and PNP chief who are both from Mindanao. “It reflects bias and prejudice. The mindset of Spanish colonizers who exiled Rizal to Dapitan. This is how Muslims live when they become part of a nonMuslim country,” Fatmawati Salapuddin, Commissioner representing Tausugs at the
National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) told MindaNews. “Dela Rosa comes from Mindanao, a Mindanao settler who still carries biases and prejudice against Muslims and yet we shared MSU (Mindanao State University) with him. Dela Rosa spent a few semesters at the MSU main campus in Marawi City before he entered the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). Fr. Eliseo Mercado, Jr., former President of the
Notre Dame University in Cotabato City, said, he hopes Duterte, the country’s 16th President and the first Mindanawon to lead the country, “will put an end to this practice.” “This is the usual practice and woe to poor provinces that deserve better…. The scoundrels and scalawags ought to be dismissed and NOT assigned to Sulu or Basilan or Tawi Tawi! These places deserve decent and good policemen See scalawags, page A11
