Pimentel: New law mandates NBI reorganization, modernization By Omeng Maglangit
S e n at o r A q u i l i n o “Koko” Pimentel III yesterday day said a new law provides funding support for the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the overhaul of the agency in a wide-ranging modernization program to boost its capacity to undertake expanded investigative and detective work. The law was signed last June 23 by former President Benigno S. Aquino III and will be known as Republic Act No. 10867 or the “National Bureau of Investigation Reorganization and Modernization Act.” It was sponsored by Pimentel, who is also the president of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Laban ng Bayan (PDP Laban), now the new administration party. Under the new law, the NBI would be able to acquire state-of-the-art investigative and intelligence equipment

and establish, among others, forensic and scientific laboratories that are vital to its criminal investigation, detection and evidence gathering work, said Pimentel. Unauthorized wearing of police and military uniforms will be penalized Re-elected Rep. Raul V. Del Mar (1st District, Cebu City) said he is determined to pursue the passage of a bill that would penalize the indiscriminate wearing of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) uniform by civilians. Del Mar re-filed the measure that seeks to amend Republic Act No. 493 to provide a strong and effective deterrent to crimes associated with the illegal use of AFP and PNP uniforms. The bill widens the coverage of the law to include the ban on the use and
wearing of military and police or imitations and the manufacture and sale of military/police uniforms or imitations and the textile for these uniforms. Under the bill, violators face a jail term of 10 years and a fine of P20,000 for the use and wearing of military and police or imitations, while a five-year imprisonment and a fine of P10,000 would be imposed for the unauthorized sale of military and police uniforms to civilian and the production of textile, which is being used for the production of See uniforms, page B7

Anti-Money Laundering Law should include Casino operators Reinforcing President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti corruption drive in all levels of government, including money laundering, outgoing Speaker and Quezon City Rep. Feliciano Belmonte, Jr. underscored the need to include casino operators in the coverage of the Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2001.
