Muslim religious leader appeals for peace during Eid’l Fitr celebration By Cheng Ordoñez Associate Editor

CAGAYAN de Oro City-A Muslim leader here in Mindanao call for world peace during the celebration of Eid’l Fitr, culminating the month-long Ramadan, month of fast, Wednesday,

July 6, 2016. Despite the terror attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iraq and Bangladesh in the past few days, Mindanaoans remained steadfast in their good relationship with Muslim communities, some even embraced the Islam faith, among them were three

sisters who traced their roots to their grand-grandma of the Tausug tribe. Sisters Christine Joy, Clair and Celine said they merely “reverted” and not converted to Islam, having Muslim blood running in their veins from their mother’s grandma.

After the Eid’ l Fitr prayer, Wednesday, July 6, 2016, the three sisters were called upfront for the “shahadah” or reciting of the Islamic Creed, which is one of the five pillars of Islam, and a requirement for one to recite See LEADER, page A7

3,000 reverted to Islam in Oro By GERRY LEE GORIT Correspondent

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– More than 3,000 individuals have already reverted to Islam in this city to date, announced Major Adzramien Sahisa during the celebration of Eid alFitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan on Wednesday (July 6). Most of the new Muslims, Sahisa added, had decided to become followers of Islam by doing research on this religion. For Christine (family name withheld), a 21-year-old young professional, becoming a Muslim was a decision she made based on what she had learned from friends and from her own inquiry. Together with her sisters Celine and Claire, the young women recited the “shahadah” or the Islamic Creed, one of the five pillars of Islam, the requirement for one to become a Muslim, during the Eid al-Fitr. Christine, who used to be a Roman Catholic believer, said embracing Islam was not too difficult for them since their maternal See ISLAM, page A7

Broadcaster accuses ‘Chololot’ operator as behind death threats By Roel Catoto of MindaNews

SURIGAO City––A radio broadcaster has accused an operator of illegal slot machines in the city as behind the alleged death threats he received. Tirso A. Clerigo Jr. of

dxKS-RPN on Wednesday said the threats to his life came after he refused to accept the alleged bribe money from the operator. He said he is not afraid but isn’t taking the threats lightly either. “I’m not scared of this but if something happens to

me, this operator of illegal slot machines will be tagged as responsible,” he added. Clerigo said he went to the city police station on June 28 to have the incident reported. On June 22 and 24, he mentioned in his program the alleged rampant opera-

tions of illegal slot machines in several villages in the city. On both days, a person approached him and offered 5,000 pesos weekly for him just to stop airing the existence of “chololot”, the local name of slot machines. “He went to the announcer’s booth and at-

tempted to bribe me with 5,000 per week to stop the issue on illegal fruit game machines,” he said. Clerigo said the person repeatedly told him through mobile text messages and in person to accept the bribe but he refused. He said that on June 27

at 6:30pm, a young man told him about a supposed plan to kill him. The Surigao Press and Radio Club and Surigao Media Association condemned the threats. Two days after Clerigo reported the threats See threats, page A7
