NUJP demands investigation of PDEA harassment on Iloilo reporter THE National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) Iloilo Chapter strongly denounced the harassment and blatant disrespect displayed by some agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Region 6 against Rena Manubag-Dago-on, reporter of IBC TV 13.

Dago-on was driving her car on July 26 when she chanced upon a PDEA buy-bust operation

against suspected drug pushers at Barangay El 98 in Jaro District, Iloilo City.

Sensing that it was newsworthy, Ms Dago-on alighted from her car and took photographs. She then approached and asked the agents for details of their operation.

But to her surprise, one of the male agents rudely accosted and berated her while another female agent suddenly grabbed her phone

and deleted the pictures she took.

The agents continued to badmouth and yell at her even after she introduced herself as a member of the media and wife of Supt. Salvador Dago-on, chief of the Iloilo City Police Office Intelligence Unit.

The agents also prevented her from leaving when she tried to go to her car to get her identification card.

Lopez wont allow Tampakan project

ENVIRONMENT and Natural Resources Secretary Regina Lopez on Wednesday stood firm that she won’t allow gold and copper mining operation in Tampakan, South Cotabato.

“I will not allow the Tampakan project as long as it is planned as an open-pit mine,” said Lopez in a press conference.

The DENR chief said she would stand against any move to lift South Cotabato’s ban on open pit mining, which is Tampakan’s pre-

ferred extraction method, describing it as “horrible”.

“Tampakan is on top of hundreds of hectares of agricultural land, the food basket of Mindanao, and you want to put a 700-hectare open-pit mine? I don’t care how much money they give us. It’s not worth it. Who is making the money here and who is taking the risk?” she lamented.

Lopez, however, said all permits given to the project will be reviewed “but we will observe due process.”

Sagittarius Mining Inc. (SMI) has a pending proposal to spend USD 5.9

billion to dig into one of Southeast Asia’s largest untapped resources with an estimated yield of 11.6 million tons of copper and 14.6 million ounces of gold.

Dago-on further said she was also accused by the PDEA agents as a possible accomplice of the subjects of the drug bust operation.

The entire incident left her extremely distressed.

While we understand that there are security considerations in covering police operations, the behavior displayed by the agents was unwarranted and

intolerable, especially after Ms. Dago-on clearly identified herself as a member of the press.

“We demand that the PDEA 6 leadership immediately investigate the incident and mete the appropriate disciplinary action on those agents,” the NUJP said in a statement, adding, “we also demand that the PDEA 6 leadership and the agents responsible apologize to Ms. Dago-on.”

Groups scored vs world’s largest carbon producers

OMPANIES responsible for the majority of fossil fuel products that have been manufactured, marketed, and sold since the industrial revolution and have contributed the lion’s share of cumulative global emissions of industrial CO2 and methane, have been ordered to respond to a legal petition that triggered the firstever national human rights investigation concerning climate change.

The Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines (CHR) on Wednesday sent copies of the complaint filed by the petitioners, including disaster survivors, community organizations and Greenpeace Southeast Asia, as well as an official order, to the headquarters of the world’s largest investor-owned fossil fuel and cement producers. The order enjoins the companies to submit answers to the commission within 45 days.

The 47 companies that were sent the petition and the order to respond to allegations of human rights abuses resulting from climate change include Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Total, BHP Billiton, Glencore, Suncor and ConocoPhillips.

“We’ve been affected for so long by storms, droug hts…by ext reme weather, now made worse by climate change. We just want to live a decent and peaceful life, without fear and being at the mercy of big corporations that only care for their profits. Our only choice is to defend our rights.

“We want those most responsible to be held accountable. We want justice and to regain the ability to protect the little that we have left for our children”, said Veronica “Derek” Cabe, one of the petitioners from Bataan, where communities are fighting against coal storage facilities and proposals for a new coal-fired power plant and where one of the community leaders advocating against coal was shot dead on 1 July 1, 2016.

The commission launched a probe in 2015 looking into whether the world’s largest carbon

producers are violating or threatening to violate the human rights of all Filipinos by significantly contributing to global climate change and failing to reduce emissions, despite having the capacity to do so.

The petitioners have asked the commission,

among other things, to require the companies to submit plans on the steps they will take to eliminate, remedy and prevent the devastating effects of climate change, in a country known to be one of the world’s most vulnerable to these effects.

The complaint also asks

the commission to monitor people and communities acutely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

“Ultimately, those who have profited most from pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere must bear the burden of preventing the havoc already being

wreaked by climate change.

This is the first step in that process. The courageous Filipino people are the first to put the world’s largest carbon producers on notice that they must account for their emissions,” said Jennifer Morgan, Executive Director of Greenpeace

International.

The commission’s actions are unprecedented. For the first time, a national human rights body is officially taking steps to address the impacts of climate change on human rights and the responsibility of private

Koko just repeated history when his father then a senator, Nene Pimentel was also elected to the same position. It is a simple case of like-fatherlike-son. Of course, Koko is a brilliant lawyer who topped the bar. With his election to the No. 3 post in the national government, the chance that he becomes president is not so remote. If for some reasons Duterte is unable to function as chief executive, VP Leni Robredo takes over. If by reason of fate Robredo is also incapacitated to function as president, right away, by operation of law - - a pure Kagay-anon will become president of the republic.

000 I am happy former president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was acquitted by the supreme Court of her cases. I do not claim to have befriended the lady president but for one thing she visited the County of Santa Clara in northern California when she was vice president while I was president of the Filipino-American Press Club of Silicon Valley. I invited her to our club induction program which she accepted and certainly I had a brief talk with her.

We were seated side by side in a presidential table and we both delivered speeches.

Madam Gloria was a very amiable lady and I could not believe she is capable of committing a big crime when she was president of the Philippines. It may be too delayed but justice was served upon her.

by Him to achieve victory and success over kings and princes. The distinguishing characteristic of that “man” is the manner by which he prays to God. This “man” (who I believe is actually a group of believers led by their leader), “will call on my name”, says God, as stated in Isaiah 41:25. This is significant, especially if we consider that during the time of Isaiah, there was no specific name yet by which God was called.

Yes, He was already referred to as “Yahweh” or by some other Name, but it is only in the New Testament that God’s name was clearly identified, and that is Jesus.

So, is there a group which, when its members pray, starts off with the Name of God, right away?

Yes, there is, and this is the “Philippine-born” Anak ng Diyos Kadugo Ni Kristo (AND KNK, or the Children of God Blood Kin of the Christ) Church, whose prayers begin and end with the Name of God. days after President Rodrigo Duterte declared a unilateral ceasefire for the communist rebels on Monday during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA), members of the New People’s Army (NPA) on Wednesday ambushed a convoy of Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) in Davao del Norte.

One member of CAFGU and four others were w ou n d e d du r i n g t h e ambush that took place at around 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27 in sitio Kamunuan, Barangay Gupitan, Kapalong, Davao del Norte, Captain Rhyan Batchar, chief information officer of the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division, said.

However, the CAFGU member nor the four others wounded were not identified.

“This is a clear disregard by the NPAs to the declaration of a unilateral ceasefire

by President Duterte,” Captain Batchar told reporters here on Wednesday afternoon.

He said that in line with the declaration of unilateral ceasefire, the CAFGU members were ordered to pull-out from their position in Sitio Kapatagan back to their patrol base in Sitio Patil.

But before reaching their patrol base, the NPAs ambushed the CAFGU members, Batchar said.

On Wednesday during the regular AFP-PNP press conference at the Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City, Batchar told reporters that offensives of the Philippine Army in the whole Davao region and neighboring provinces in Mindanao under the jurisdiction of the 10thID had stopped following the declaration of the ceasefire by the President and upon the orders of Armed Forces Chief of Staff Lt. General Ricardo Visaya.

“After the President declared the unilateral ceasefire, we immediately stopped our operations against the NPA (New People’s Army) rebels,” Batchar said.

Pulling out of troops back to designated patrol bases were also ordered in accordance with the unilateral truce declared by the President, he added.

“But we will continue our

support to law enforcement operations, protect the communities and the people in our areas of jurisdiction,” Batchar clarified.

He said the Army will also continue to secure vital government installations and flagship projects being implemented in the area.

“We will not lower our guards, we will always be on alert despite the presence of the unilateral ceasefire,” Batchar said.

National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) welcomed the unilateral ceasefire declared by President Duterte.

NDFP chair Luis Jalandoni said they still need to receive and study the full text of the declaration before making their move in relation to the declaration of a ceasefire.

The Philippine National Police in Davao region (PNP PRO-11) will also abide by the unilateral ceasefire declaration but will continue to do its law enforcement tasks in the area.

“We will comply with the ceasefire as far as offensives and combat operations are concerned,” said Police Chief Inspector Andrea dela Cerna, spokesperson of PNP PRO-11 in the same press conference last Wednesday.

Dela Cerna added that the PNP in the area will continue to perform its law enforcement functions against all forms of criminality.
