Ashes and phone numbers: Stories of struggle of people with HIV

Raped in Dubai IN 1996, Rina, then only 17 years old, worked as a domestic helper in Dubai.

There she was raped by her male employer.

“After that, he barred me from going out alone and speaking to other Filipinos. But I got a chance to seek help when a friend of my male employer asked him to allow me to clean his house. I told his friend about the rape, and it was him who told my employer’s wife.

“My employer’s wife had studied in England and has a background in human rights. She helped me escape. She went to the police but was ignored.”

The tragedy did not discourage Rina from again trying her luck abroad.

And so in 2000, she underwent medical examination at a hospital in Manila as required of overseas Filipino workers. The result of the blood test stunned her -- she had contracted the dreaded Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

At that instant, she knew she got the disease from the

employer who raped her.

Adding insult to injury, a nurse at the hospital who knew of her condition asked, “Ilang lalaki ba nakipagsex sa iyo?” (How many men have you had sex with?)

And although she was placed on treatment for free by government, Rina said it pained her that people with HIV like herself have had experienced discrimination and humiliation.

Daughter infected, too Imee, a registered midwife by profession, also has HIV. She got the disease through her late husband, a seaman.

“I did not believe at once that I have HIV. I told the doctor that maybe my blood sample was swapped with another one.”

Wors e for her, her daughter who was born in 2003, was diagnosed in 2004 to be HIV-positive, too.

“The doctors recommended that my daughter undergo trial anti-retroviral treatment. I was afraid for my daughter so instead of her I volunteered to undergo the trial treatment.

But when her CD4 count went down, i consented to her treatment.

“I didn’t know I was

positive, so I didn’t undergo anti-retroviral treatment when I became pregnant.

The children of other HIVpositive mothers turned out negative of the disease because they underwent this treatment when they were pregnant.

“We went to a private hospital. There we were discriminated and placed in isolation. Hospital workers would approach us with their bodies covered like they were astronauts. We moved to San Lazaro Hospital when we ran out of money.”

Imee’s daughter is now 13 years old. “That means I have been living with HIV for 13 years already,” she said.

Imee said she did not tell her child’s school about the girl’s condition for fear she would suffer the discrimination and stigma she has experienced.

What’s more painful to her is that her relatives who know she is HIV-positive are avoiding her. “Masakit (It hurts),” she said trying to hold back emotions.

‘Toro’ He looks brusque, his biceps and flat belly suggesting frequent visits to the gym. But looks can be

deceiving. Gabby has been living with HIV since 1990.

He was 18 when he arrived in Manila in 1984 to escape a hard life in Cebu.

“I went to Manila with only a single underwear and a hat. Luneta (Rizal Park) was my home for three months. I thought things were cheaper in Manila,” he recalled.

“I worked as dispatcher (barker for passenger vehicles) in Harrison-Mabini. Later, somebody convinced me to work in a bar in Ermita.”

He admitted to performing in “toro” or live sex shows with female partners for three years, from 1984 to 1986. “My body shivered the first time I did it, but I needed money. I earned P800 a night, and in 1984, that amount was already big.”

“I went to Vicente Sotto Memorial Hospital to donate blood to a friend who had to undergo transfusion. But my blood was not used because the doctors said they saw something in it. They didn’t tell me what was wrong, saying a confirmatory test had to be done first.”

In 1992, Gabby married in Cebu. But he was surprised because his wife kept coming back to the hospital for pneumonia, diarrhea and other illnesses.

At the Cebu Doctors Hospital she was found to be HIV-positive.

Gabby knew he was the one who infected his wife.

“I know she was virgin. If only I was told in 1990 that I have HIV, I wouldn’t have gotten married.”

“In 1994, my wife was brought to San Lazaro Hospital. Sara Jane Salazar (the first Filipino to admit in public that she had HIV/ AIDS) was also there.

“The others had become too thin, some had lost their sanity.

Gabby remembered seeing a patient who committed suicide in an unusual manner. “I watched him as he picked up a kettle with hot water, stopped and poured the water on his head and body...He died.”

“Before my wife died in 1997, she told me not to marry again and said she wished to be buried in Cebu.

“Back in Cebu I had to endure the rage and condemnation of his wife’s relatives who blamed him for her fate.

“Tama naman sila kaya tahimik na lang ako.” (They were right so the only thing I could do was to remain silent.)

A death on Christmas Day Gabby recalled that in the early days of San Lazaro Hospital as a treatment center for people with HIV, they experienced discrimination and humiliation. He said the nurses abhorred their presence and would wear astronaut-like clothing when approaching them.

“They would give us food by pushing it with their feet. They were afraid to come to us.

“Those who died were cremated. There were no names, only phone numbers. It was my job to gather their ashes and place it in a box with the phone numbers.

“Minsan tinatanong ko, ano kaya kung oras ko na, meron kayang maawa sa akin (Sometimes I asked myself, what if my time will come, would somebody take pity on me)?”

As a form of diversion, Gabby engaged in physical activities even if his doctor warned it’s not good for him to get tired.

He found a partner, a woman with HIV who was confined, too, at San Lazaro.

“But she died of pneumonia.

Her CD4 count decreased because she did not want to undergo anti-retroviral treatment. It was Christmas when she died.”

After one year at San Lazaro, Gabby met Rina, yes, the woman who got HIV from her employer in Dubai who raped her.

Love blossomed between them, and in 2003, they got married.

Still, Gabby couldn’t hide his sadness over the discrimination they’ve been subjected to in their own neighborhood.

“Every morning, we’d find the words ‘Mga May AIDS’ outside our house.

They would stone our house.

That’s why we came out in public. If we keep on hiding, we couldn’t be of help.

“We have two children, a 10-year old girl and a 4-year old boy. Praise the Lord, they’re negative of HIV. They’re the ones who give me strength. I’ll go on with life for them.”

For Rina, prayers have sustained her all these years.

Golden Haven embarks on aggressive expansion Tuesday, July 19, 2016

shares of stock in three to five years.

Golden Haven controlling shareholder Manuel B. Villar said the death care ser vices firm targets to put up seven new memorial parks a year to expand its presence in 50 cities and municipalities.

Villar said they expect to have 14 memorial parks before the end of the year.

“We have one in Zamboanga,

in Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Iloilo, in Bulacan, Cavite, Las Piñas, Pampanga, and Nueva Vizcaya,” he told reporters.

Likewise, Villar said the firm will be opening its first funeral chapel in its Las Piñas branch with the aim of having chapels in all of their memorial parks nationwide as a complementary service.

G o l d e n Hav e n h a s a l s o opened a crematorium in Cavite and Villar said since it is again

a new business segment, they will start slowly but eventually speed up its expansion nationwide.

The company is engaged in five segments of the death care industry -- memorial park, columbarium, chapel, crematorium and keepsakes like the urn and caskets.

It is also looking to expand into pre-need planning services.

The company, an affiliate of property developer Vista Land

with presence in 97 cities and municipalities across the country, currently has presence in eight locations and has existing inventory with PHP1.5 billion sales value.

Golden Haven, the first company to go public this year, debuted at the local bourse last month.

Social media: Either good or bad?

N owadays , p e o p l e around the world can communicate without boundaries. The world has emerged and the entire nations are in total immersion. Politicians, educators, faculties, teachers in schools, housemothers, and even house maids get in touch one another. They can communicate both personally and in group. This is due to the social media (socmed) and internets.

There are some good effects of socmed but there are also bad effects of it. The positive effects are so many if the users can manage and benefit it. For example, for international editors of international academic journals, they can use internets and socmed for communications. Sending messages and articles for editing will be much easier by the email and even socmed.

A week ago, for example, a friend of mine in another country, the Philippines, who wanted me to have a criticism or comments on his book for publication, just sent it through Messengers.

Another friend also from another country, asked me to edit a brochure, and he easily sent it to me through WatsApp (WA).

Again, a friend from the USA, who asked me to contribute an article for a certain privileged magazine, just sent a proposal through face book. The two professors from the UK and the USA, when they happened

to be in my city, invited me to have lunch and another appointment. They just sent the invitation through WA. The politicians who want their names popular also use socmed. They expose their personal branding using socmed. So, in the era of information (Alvin Toffler. 1974), the people can get anything easily by getting information. They can communicate one another without boundaries.

All the above are the goods.

However, there are some negative effects of socmed.

Some people also use socmed for negative purposes.

Some of my friends in the socmed (face books and WA) said that they always found fake information from certain accounts.

They always got some hoax posts. These posts provide fake announcements such as advertisings, fake conferences, and even fake job vacancies.

Some also got socmed accounts that laways misbehave. Some tried to ask for money. Now some are also degrading others through massagers. All these are the bads.

The most obvious one is socmed in politics. There are some supporters of a certain candidate of a certain leader in a certain country, degrading the opponents by commenting using bad sentences. The most strikingly is bad chatting and using the photos being cropped and

edited. This is really both degrading but sometimes amusing.

I am fond of using LinkedIn for communication with some professionals.

We usually talk about the fields of sciences we have in the same ideas. We also talk about some developments of sciences and discussion in group about linguistics and language. This is a little bit an effort for personal branding. I also use WA both individual and in group communication.

However, the problem in this kind of communication domain tends to make us more difficult to adapt to it.

Mostly, the group members of WA are heterogeneous.

In that domain, the most applicable posting is neutral information.

It is common that we can find a posting which is not neutral. The posts tend to

be more specific so that it may not be applicable for the whole members in a group. In this special case, the account holders of any socmed should also learn about communication and the domain of it. Otherwise, the post being posted may not be relevant to some members of the group. But, it is really difficult.

Socmed has both good and bad effects. Only the learned can use socmed appropriately. Using socmed in group is more difficult because the members are heterogeneous. This is really in dilemma whether we have to be a member or not.

To deal with this socmed, the account holders can learn how to communicate in an appropriate domain of communication. This is not for politicians because they always use socmed for achieving their goals without considering either the good or bad effects of it.

-oooPARENTAL AUTHORITY, WHAT IS IT? Today, we start a weeklong discussion on parental authority as the Family Code of the Philippines provides under its Articles 209-233. This is prompted by a seminar my wife, Judge Angelina Mauricio, is giving to teachers and personnel of the Liberato Damian Elementary School in Pasig City under Principal Thelma Lattao.

The seminar is being pursued by my wife, who is the current All Star President of the Rotary Club of Intramuros, Manila, District

3810 of Rotary International, according to the directives of District 3810 Governor Ernest Yuyek. The seminar focuses on special parental authority of school administrators and teachers over their students, as part of Rotary’s peace and conflict resolution initiatives.

We start by defining “parental authority”, and then discuss during the week its other ramifications under the law. “Parental authority” is the “natural right and duty of parents over the person and property of their un-emancipated children, which includes rearing and caring for them.”

This is because of Biblical inspiration that says so, starting with the declaration of Jesus, our God and Savior, that He is putting up His own Church, which is found in Matthew 16:18.

portant because, by His own declaration, hell will not prevail against it---which means, in turn, that the members of that Church will not go to hell on the day of judgment. This is therefore the Church of salvation, where believers wanting to be saved in eternal life must become members of.

Now, where can we find this Church of Jesus? There is no indication at all in Matthew, or in ay other part of the New Testament of the Bible. This should prompt us to find the answer in other parts of the Bible.

How the triad drug cartel controlled the nation

Finally, drug operations in the Philippines is now truly being addressed.

Thanks to the strong will of President Rodrigo Duterte.

But how this nationwide operation came about and now already embedded even to the highest and smallest fiber of our society?

The British opium operation in China was exported in Hong Kong and to some parts of Asia including the Philippines. Even in the books of Jose Rizal, he exposed how even our so called Illustrados were used

by Chinese businessmen and barter traders to bring in opium to the country in disguise as support to finance their revolution. Even the NPA’s in the mountain provinces plant marijuana to support their cause.

The Triad Gang of China was in gambling, prostitution, smuggling, trading opium to producing shabu, money lending and laundering.

A book manuscript of Col. Balbino Diego, former FM’s PSC (Presidential Security Command) chief legal, tycoons like Li Ka Shing of Hong Kong, Stanley Ho of Macau and Run Run Shaw of Singapore were part of the Triad.

Under the Marcos regime, a mafia – like code of silence was strictly observed to hide illicit transactions with the Triad using their underworld connections to smuggle including war loots especially gold.

When the US government found out this secret connection of Marcos with the underworld, FM was forced to create his own legitimate Chinese connection by creating his own dummies like Lucio Tan, Henry Sy, Jose Yao Campos, etc.

To avert his link with the Triad, he discreetly ordered the burning of the floating casino of Stanley Ho to justify the discontinuity of Ho’s operation. Diego orchestrated the killing of the chemist of FM’s Triad asset, a certain Co. Lim Seng, the chemist of Co from China didn’t even understand English nor Tagalog. Lim Seng was told

by Co that he will be killed in disguise using dud bullets. FM ordered to shoot Lim Seng via musketry to show to the world that he is against drug proliferation.

FM sent his children abroad to study and avoid friends with bad influence, especially those using downers, marijuana and other prohibited high end drugs. Remember the plane crushed during the time of Marcos where most of the ‘friends’ of Bongbong Marcos died? An accident in disguise?

When Japan invaded most major China cities in World War II, Triads offered to work for them instead.

In Hong Kong, Triads ran criminal enterprises for Japan while Japan united the gangs under an association called the “Hing Ah Kee Kwan” (Asia Flourishing Organization).

Capacitating pupils to know how to read and love reading

Yes reading is fun and it makes us as a full man. But, sad to note that some of the pupils are slow when it comes to reading, others are even having difficulty in reading. That is why, this posts as a big challenge to us teachers on how we can ably capacitate pupils to know how to read, even further capacitating them to love reading.

Teaching the basic, the fundamental. Indeed, it is of top most priority that we teachers should teach the basic of reading. Of course, we should introduce first letters in the alphabet and the like. With this, it requires most of dedication and patience from us teachers. We cannot deny that it is not always at the first try that these pupils will learn how to read immediately; they would not learn right away. That is why we should always be ready to equip ourselves with so much patience and determination as an attestation that we really want our learners, our pupils to know how to read, then make it a habit, and eventually they will love reading.

Reading a piece everyday.

As it takes enough patience, it requires ample time for the pupils to know how to read that is why, the moment they will know how to read, let us not stop there, it must be cultivated to become a habit. One way, is to let each learner, each pupil to read a piece culled out from the books and let them read it in front of the class. In this way, we as well develop their self-esteem and self-confidence. Should the pupil skips a word in front, as teachers, we should always encourage them that they can, and promote an environment of pupils encouraging each other.

Let us never humiliate our pupils in front as they will feel disappointed and worst the next time we will call them, they will be shy to stand again in front.

It is of normal scenario that pupils may slip words while reading in front, this at first, let the class read in unison. This will help develop unity for all and as a teacher, always acknowledge and appreciate pupil’s effort in being able to do so. Let us entrust that reading is fun and it is more fun if the class reads together.

Have assignments and home works at home that would include reading. This another strategy is effective as it bears results that would also promote bonding moments between the pupil and their parents. How would we know if they really read the assigned pages to them? We will see it by conducting a surprise quiz or exam, just to test their comprehension as well and indirectly checking if they really did their homework or assignment. However, if you announce in advance that you will have a quiz the following day, it might as well secure that they will surely do their homework of reading and reading and reading.

With this, it is always the call of Sta. Ana Elementary School to make every pupil a reader, even at an early stage.

This pertains as I, we, and all of the stakeholders here will always make it sure that every child is a reader, that every pupil, every learner will know how to read.

To end, we must always instill in our minds that helping and developing a pupil on how to read is a collective effort.

It must be recognized that a learner’s growth is greatly factored by both contributing influences, be it at school or at home or the community.

Managing and handling a classroom entails effort, diligence and perseverance, as providing the pupils the best quality education they deserve is not only the function of the teacher but it has other accessory responsibilities that will bring pupils growth and success.

An accessory of this is on maintaining peace and order in the classroom.

In order to foster a harmonious and a peaceful classroom for everyone, first and foremost is that teacher should orient the pupils on existing policies, rules and regulations of the school and of course, of the classroom.

There should always be existing rules and regulations inside the classroom.

Pupils should always be reminded of this. But, on top of it, respect must be present in the classroom.

Inasmuch as the teacher

wants respect from his or her learners and pupils and that be duly given by them, it is in other way also that the teacher should respect his or her pupils as well. It does not mean that we teachers are the one teaching them and that we should always be followed. We should at all times respect our beloved pupils.

Relative to the abovementioned, as a teacher, we should always set as a good example to them. We are their second parents at school and we should always display ourselves as such.

We should always treat them as our children on our own deserving to be provided with the best quality education they ought and deserve to have.

On the other hand, we should always remind our pupils to respect their classmates, to love their classmates and everyone and

everybody at school. In short, we should always cultivate good values at the classroom so that our pupils will possess and display it wherever they go.

In order to achieve a peaceful and orderly classroom, as a teacher, we should always remind our pupils to always do what is good and what is right.

With this, it is the thrust of Sta. Ana Elementary School to always maintain peace and harmony not only in the classroom but in the school in general through mitigating action plans that would uphold so.

Sta. Ana Elementary School has been very keen and active in responding to situations that would indulge its pupil’s safety and peace. It is worthy to note that Sta. Ana Elementary School is peaceful.

When she secured a SECPA copy of her Birth Certificate, she was surprised that her name is spelled as VIRGENIA instead of “VIRGINIA”, her place of birth also appeared as “LANAO TANGKAL BAGONG INGOD SETTLEMENT”, instead of “MAGSAYSAY, LANAO DEL NORTE, the name she knew as her birthplace since she reached the age of reason. It is the place where she grew up and never knew that it was named “TANGCAL BAGONG INGOD SETTLEMENT”. She also found out that surname of her father was misspelled as “DAGCIN” instead of DAGPIN, its correct spelling, likewise under the name of “child’s mother”, written offline and unclear be cleared and let her real name be entered as “PROFETISA LANGOYAN ARSENO”. Her husband died on October 30, 2013 until now she has not claimed any the survivor’s benefits from the GSIS because of her erroneous Birth Certificate. Hence, this instant petition to straighten all her records in order to conform to the correct and true facts of her birth. Likewise to support also for her soon application of retirement from the Department of Education.

Moreso, the entry under Entry No. 58 as to the child’s name is erroneous; it was only written as KENNETH V. LIGAN when it should have been KENNETH REX V. When he verified the Certificate of Live Birth of his eldest son GENESIS ADAM, the same contained the same erroneous entry as there is also an X mark in the space: First in Entry No. 5b.

IF MULTIPLE BIRTH CHILD WAS, when the choices should had been left in blank, as the delivery of said child was SINGLE birth and not multiple birth. Already, dozens of suspected drug dependents and pushers had been summarily executed all over the country with assailants yet to be identified and the number of deaths rising by the day.

Parojinog said he had pleaded with the suspected drug personalities, from users to big-time drug lords, to stop their involvement in the shabu trade and mend their ways.

“I have done my part.

I had already asked the users to avail of free rehabilitation, the pushers with livelihood assistance, and the drug lords to leave the business behind and start fresh,” he said.

He said whatever happens to these persons will be of their own doing since he had already offered them an easy way out.

Since the national police’s Oplan Tokhang has been implemented in Ozamiz, Parojinog said there has been a noticeable drop in drug selling in the city.

Reports of motorcycleriding drug traders from neighboring towns in Misamis Occidental and other parts of Northern Mindanao going to San Roque to buy shabu from dealers there in the wee hours of the night had gone down, he said.

“Eventually, we will cut off the shabu supply and rid Ozamiz of illegal drugs,” he added.

The alleged transaction The 19-year-old April Jean Albet Albet, the alleged broker, told the police that an unidentified man called her up last Friday and specifically requested for Loyola’s presence in his room at Hotel Sogo in Cagayan de Oro City where he was staying.

It was only on Sunday afternoon that Albet was able to convince Loyola to come with her and go to the motel where the suspect, who registered himself at the hotel desk as one Jason Caram, was waiting.

A security camera at the hotel showed the suspect leaving the hotel at 2:49 p.m. Monday.

It was estimated that in 1947, there were 300,000 Triad members in Hong Kong alone.

When the Mao Tse Tung communists were victorious by 1949, these Triad nationalists were dispersed to Hong Kong, Macao, Thailand, San Francisco, Vancouver, and Perth Australia while the remnants of the Chiang Kai Shek KMT (Kuomintang) South China Army was forced into the Burma highlands where they became pivotal to smuggling drugs to the West via Thailand under Khun Sa. The Communists suppressed Triads on the mainland, executing and imprisoning many. Mao’s Prime Minister Chou En Lai banned cultivation and use of opium in 1950.

At its most basic level, the hierarchy of triad members matters little except in each individual relationship between two members, each based on ties between the Dai Lo (big brother) and Sai Lo (little brother). The big brothers give work, protection, and advice to the younger brothers who give loyalty, support, and money in exchange. In many cases, this is the only relationship that matters.

According to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the illegal drugs trade in the country totals US$6 billion to $8bn annually and is growing.

He said the best advice for local politicians is not to accept campaign contributions from unknown sources. There were already reports and possibilities were high even in the 2010 elections of narco-politics or the use of drug money for campaign funds, but what is the difference compared to the Duterte administration now? Our present leadership has enough courage and sincerity to stop this menace – proliferation of illegal drugs and has given names of high-ranking police officials who are reportedly protecting people who are in the drug trade.

The list of President Duterte is long and I am pretty sure that in due time he will name names again.

Beware, the change is here and Pres. Duterte is very angry to those who are actually committing treason in the process. This is the right for the nation to support a righteous leader’s out of the box agenda.
