CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: Cagayan de Oro Congressman and Deputy Speaker Rufus B. Rodriguez urged the Marcos administration to forego the Chinese loan for the three railway projects in the country and explore other financing options. In a statement released Sunday, Rodriguez, said that “the Philippine government has other funding options, which the Marcos leadership could explore.” The lawmaker cited the international financial institutions and even the county’s private business community to finance the country’s major infrastructures. He said such options include multilateral institutions like the World Bank and Asian Development

Bank, international assistance agencies such as the US AID, JICA of Japan, Korean agency and EU Fund, the local banking and business community and even the annual national budget. China’s disapproval of the P 275 billion loan to finance the railway projects in the country was certain when China failed to favorably respond on the Philippine’s proposed loan package on or before the June 30, 2022 deadline. QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Thursday said a total of 15,174 security forces will be deployed for the first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. scheduled on July 25 at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City. NCRPO chief Police Major General Felipe R. Natividad said the security template that will be used for the upcoming SONA will be the same implemented during his historic inauguration last June 30. Breaking down the numbers, the NCRPO said, from the total number of secu-

rity personnel that will be deployed, 9,919 will come from the organic Metro Manila police personnel, 1,891 from PNP support units, and 3,364 from other coordinating agencies, and other peacekeeping partners. The Metro Manila police force will also tap other law enforcement and government agencies, advocacy support groups, and force multipliers to boost other details of security the component. MANILA – The Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) and the US Marine Corps (USMC) will conduct specialized helicopter drills from July 18 to 22. PMC spokesperson Maj. Emery Torres, in a statement Sunday night, said these exercises are the second part of the Marine Aviation Support Activity (MASA) 2022. The first phase of the exercises took place from June 6 to 17. “The second part of MASA 2022 between the PMC and USMC will be conducted in Zambales and Taguig City from July 18 to 22, 2022. This will include helicopter rope suspension training and aeromedical evacuation training,” he

added. The PMC and USMC are expected to execute and refine their tactics, techniques, and procedures for interoperability. The first part of MASA 2022 took place in Palawan and included a combined joint forward arming and refueling demonstration, and a lecture on unmanned air systems operations. Four C-17 transport aircraft of the US Air Force arrived in Laoag City on June 6 along with a US C-130 cargo plane that landed on June 7 carrying personnel and equipment for the second leg of the exercise from July 18 to 22. A most Down-to-Earth book

OVERALL, “Down to Earth” is a beautiful middle-grade book that I think a person of any age would enjoy. “Down to Earth” is a fascinating, middle-grade adventure that makes you feel in awe of the Universe, and I loved reading it! There are many reasons why I adored reading this book. Do you feel like you’re living life but missing the information necessary for true happiness and fulfillment? Do you feel like someone threw you into life without the user’s manual? It’s hard to play a game when you don’t know the rules—especially when it’s the game of life! When tragedy strikes, it’s easy to harden our hearts and cry out, “God, why did you let this happen?” Maybe then, we started praying. Before, when everything went smoothly, we would not even think a minute about praying... . “To be a Christian without prayer, “said Martin Luther, “is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” Prayer is the only way of becoming what God wants us to be. This is the reason why Jesus spent many hours praying. Unquestionable, our needs bring us to a place

of prayer. Confronted with danger or tragedies, as I mentioned earlier, we look for God’s help. Difficult times always cause the hearts of men to turn to God into prayer. Let me ask you: How long has it been since you’ve brought your burdens to God? Since you asked His forgiveness for your shortcomings? In his very interesting book “People in Prayer”, Dr. John White reminds us that prayer is a divine-human interaction and it is always God who takes the initiative. White writes: “God speaks and we respond. God is always speaking. To hear his voice is not usually a mystical experience. It consists merely of a willingness to pay heed to God who lays a claim to our lives.” Yes, God always speaks. It is up to us whether we will listen and respond to Him. Many think we are the ones who initiate prayer. But prayers begin and end with God. There was a time, I wasn’t in the mood to pray any more. It seemed that God didn’t listen to my prayer any more. I didn’t get what I prayed for. Of course, not... ! That’s not the meaning of praying to God. Will all my

wishes be granted? Heaven forbid! Sometimes, after we have prayed, God’s answers may puzzle us. But as time goes by and as events unfold we see God’s purpose in his answers. We might get a larger vision, what HE likes. Not what WE like... . Think about it for a moment” How does the idea that prayer begins and ends with God affect me now? Do I have the habit of listening to god? How do I respond to Him? How do I usually pray? I confess that a long time ago I have been trying to persuade God to change other people in my surroundings or circumstances. Nothing changed. Of course not, what a fatal attraction? I got confused because God never granted my requests. Meanwhile I got God’s answers to my prayers. Maybe very simple: I was willing to let God change me... .This is how each one of us should start. That instant noodles controversy

ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina—Jesette Kelly here in Charlotte is uncharacteristically worried about something and when I asked her about it, she told me that she’s concerned that she won’t be able to eat ‘Lucky Me’ Pancit Canton. Yes, that ‘Lucky Me’ Pancit Canton and the related noodle brands that we cook either in those cups or taken out of plastic packets for steaming. Like many Filipinos she and I learned about the news on the recall of the popular noodle brand from the markets in Ireland, Malta and France. Jesette and I live in the US—specifically she in Charlotte and me in Rockingham, both in North Carolina—but she’s anxious that she may not enjoy the noodle brand if the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) orders a similar recall. It isn’t her favorite Filipino food but ‘Lucky Me’ Instant Pancit Canton brings back memories of home. And true enough, ‘Lucky Me’ Pancit Canton, Instant Noodles and other related noodle products can be found in Filipino owned specialty shops and Asian food stores. If I recall correctly, instant noodle brands like

Lucky Me are a convenient staple of American college students and even inmates, who mix them with other cheap high salt content food. Last week the health departments of these aforementioned countries ruled that they found traces of ethylene oxide n the seasonings used for the noodle brand manufactured by Monde Nissin, said to be a Philippine-based food distribution company. Back in the Philippines, Monde Nissin insisted that ‘Lucky Me’ Pancit Canton and its related noodle brands are safe to eat despite warnings from the European health authorities. In what could only be a confusing, seemingly contradictory statement, Monde Nissin said ethylene oxide is not added to their products but were used to prevent microbial growth in the spices they used for their noodle brands. Monde Nissin’s stocks fell sharply as a result while an investigation by the local FDA is ongoing. The great misfortune in this whole debacle is the Filipino poor, who consider Lucky Me as a cheap staple along with rice and sardines. In fact one can find Lucky Me noodles packed with

rice and sardines in every emergency food package handed to calamity victims. After becoming a household brand thanks to one of its many promoters, multi-awarded actress and Batangas governor Vilma Santos-Recto, Lucky Me was a favorite not only of college students but old school Pinoys like myself. When I don’t have time to cook ‘kalamunggay’, it was Lucky Me instant noodles that provided instant satisfaction to hunger. Through the years, we haven’t heard of any complaints about Lucky Me products nor any reports of any Filipino who got sick or died due to complications caused by the food product. To me, I found this ‘Lucky Me’ report quite strange really. I hope this isn’t because the Lucky Me noodle brand is making inroads to other noodle brands sold in these countries. Health authorities in other countries are very strict in monitoring the food sold in their markets. I’m not saying the Philippine FDA isn’t not doing See NOODLES, page 11

Bacolod starts clearing downtown of ‘spaghetti’ wires By NANETTE GUADALQUIVER

BACOLOD CITY – Telecommunications and power service providers have deployed teams to fix and remove the hazardous and nuisance “spaghetti wires” along this city’s major thoroughfares starting Saturday. This weekend, the operations began along San Juan Street, a part of the downtown, where several business establishments are located. Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said the clearing work will be conducted five days each week: Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. “We will do away with Mondays and Fridays because of the traffic volume on those days,” he added. Benitez said teams comprised of about 20 people each are tasked to remove the entangled wires to ensure that there is no traffic obstruction and disruption of telephone, internet, and power services. The mayor thanked the various telecommunications companies, the Central Negros Electric Cooperative, Bacolod Traffic Authority

Before the launch of the clearing operations, he met with the representatives of telephone and internet and cable television service providers, and local power distribution utility to address the “spaghetti” wires problem. Some 90 percent of these wires are considered damaged and no longer functional, based on the city’s survey. Benitez said not only the entangled wires will be removed, but also the redundant electrical poles being used for other service connections. SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – Some of the 41 informal settler families in this capital town have begun to relocate to give way to the construction of the “La Fuerza Real” People’s Park. Eby Archangel Butiong, secretary of Antique’s Provincial Housing Board, said in an interview Friday that out of the 41 families set to move from the easement lot of the Malandog River in Barangay Maybato Sur in San Jose de Buenavista, 35 families have been given more time to relocate. “The Antique provincial government has given the remaining informal settlers until next month in order for them to be relocated,” Butiong said. He added that these families have already purchased their home lots from a pri-

vate land owner nearby as they refused to transfer to the relocation site provided by the provincial government in the adjacent town of Hamtic. Being fishermen, the majority of the families refused to move to the relocation site as they want to continue living near the river. “The other six families out of the 41 had already left on May 31 after they were given financial assistance by the provincial government for their transfer elsewhere,” Butiong said. The construction of the La Fuerza Real People’s Park on a 6,300 square meter lot near the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office is part of the plan to make the area an ecotourism attraction in the province. E. Visayas tourism workers urged to get booster shots By ROEL AMAZONA

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office here has asked tourism enterprises to ensure that their workers get booster shots against Covid-19 with the rising number of new cases in the country. DOT Eastern Visayas director Karina Rosa Tiopes advised tourism-related establishments to check if their workers have received Covid-19 booster shots and report the vaccination status to the DOT regional office. “We continue to urge tourism industry workers who have not yet received their Covid-19 vaccine booster shots to take advantage of the free vaccines, which provide not only protection for themselves and their families, but also aid in the recovery of the tourism industry, which has been severely impacted by the pandemic,” Tiopes said in an interview Monday. Data from the DOT regional office showed that out of the 12,486 tourism workers in the region employed by 722 tourism businesses,

a total of 12,048 of them have been vaccinated as of July 12. Of the total vaccinated tourism workers, only 2,209 received their booster shots. The majority of those who received the booster shots are those who work in regular hotels. Some of them work in DOT-accredited en-

The internet and mass media has lately grown in leaps and bounds. Its impact to education and schooling is without precedent. Three decades ago, learners and teachers rely on physical books, recorded media (audio or video), the radio and the television to learn new information or to verify an information. With improved access to the internet, the volume of information made accessible to students and teachers alike has exploded. Teachers increasingly use new teaching aids and technology that appeal to both the auditory and visual perception of learners. In the Philippines for example, there is Knowledge Channel which provides technological access and educational videos to public schools throughout the country. DepEd established its own UHF television Channel to accommodate the different learning styles of learners. Episodes shown were designed “with interactive components to capture and sustain learners’ interest while attaining the targeted competencies.” Aside from DepEdTV, the live streaming

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) nabbed Sunday midnight two persons suspected to have raped a woman and killed her lover in Coastal Road, Barangay Lapasan here. Police identified the suspects as Erwin Adame, 35, of Tabaco, Barangay Puntod and Rolly Hantak, 41, of Barangay Tablon. Both are detained at the COCPO Police Station 3 in Agora, Barangay Lapasan. A police report said the rape and the killing of the woman’s boyfriend occurred at around 10 p.m. Sunday. In a phone interview, Lt. Macario Linog Jr., the Agora police station deputy commander, identified the slain victim as Cris Semaña, 20, a delivery rider, of Barangay Lapasan.
