Maragusan to hold Youth Day on Feb 14

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte -- Maragusan will celebrate Youth Day on Heart’s Day. The municipal government is now finalizing its plan to conduct a whole day affair for the youth on February 14, 2017.

According to the Municipal Information Officer Noli Tanggoyoc, the Youth Day will begin with a Fun Run dubbed as Dagan para sa Kabatan-unan sa Maragausan on Heart’s Day, which will be held within the Poblacion Area.

Tanggoyoc said that they are expecting to gather around 200-300 participants for the three-kilometer run, which is open to all running enthusiasts.

According to their advertisements, the registration fee is peg at PhP-250 per participants, which is inclusive of a singlet, certificate and coffee. Participants may win up to PhP1,000 and a trophy, he added.

Taggoyoc also bared that aside from the Fun Run, they will also hold talks on the Philippine National Police’s War on Drugs, Gag See hold, page A3

Duterte honors wounded soldiers in Maguindanao

PRESIDENT Ro drigo Roa Duterte honored 12 wounded soldiers, at Camp Siongco Station Hospital, during his visit to Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao on Friday, January 27, 2017.

The soldiers who belonged to 6th Infantry Division of Philippine Army got injured in a clash with lawless armed group in Ampatuan town on Thursday, while acting as support to law enforcers serving a search warrant against the town mayor, Rasul Sangki.

DAVAO CITY -- The National Economic and Development Authority in Davao Region (NEDA-11) has identified seven priority projects that are sure to happen in Davao City from 2017 to 2022.

Ma. Lourdes Lim, director of NEDA XI, said as part of the investment plan for Davao Region will be the Davao City Bypass Construction Project, Davao City Coastal Bypass Road Project, Davao Public Transport Modernization Project, Mindanao Railway Project

on the Tagum-Davao-Digos segment, Davao Sasa Port Modernization Project, Development Operations and Maintenance of the Davao Airport and the DavaoIsland Garden City of Samal Bridge Project..

She said these projects are the big-ticket infrastructure developments that are being part of the investment program.

Lim explained that being part of the investment program entails a preceding feasibility study for the project to be considered by the funders.

“Once you are part of

the pipeline in the public investment program, we can be assured that the budget authority will be provided by the national government to be assisted by our multi-lateral and bilateral partners,” she said.

Lim also revealed that disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation are also part of the strategy in the local, regional and national development plans.

Research emphasized the importance of school leadership in improving outcomes for a school and its students.

But make no mistake: this is not the school leader as drill sergeant, or the charismatic leader whose skill-set is impossible to replicate. Instead, it is a school leader who is capable of

transforming a school environment so that its students and teachers can flourish.

It is important to keep in mind that while school leadership is essential, consistent, strong leadership at the district level must not be overlooked.

While principals create conditions that encourage great teaching, superintendents can create conditions that allow principals to become even better leaders.

In this way, superintendents can lay the groundwork for

sharing his ideas, plans and realizations. In this way, he is not just a leader but also light to other people, to whom they could gain ideas and lessons. This also makes him not just efficient but an effective leader.

Leadership is about directing people. It is about leading a group towards a common goal. However in between these things is the process of training, inspiring and influincing subordinates in order for them to perform their best in every task that are assigned to. Leadership is about overseeing a whole community and ensure that everyone is doing their respective deliverables. successful school leaders by setting a clear direction and tone, investing in professional development, setting up mentors for new principals, giving principals the authority to make key decisions and elevating the importance of academic achievement – sometimes even going so far as to making it a part of a principal’s evaluation. And while many states have adopted standards for principals, leading the charge by working on division /district wide evaluation systems for its principals.

For example in schools, teachers are also managers of their respective classes. They are the one who reprimand bad actions among students, teach them to be good people and incoil values among them. It is a never-easy task. It requires a quite big effort in order to completely perform what they are ought to do.

Thus, these teachers need a leader to guide them. Head Teacher often imposes rules to keep teachers disciplined with their responsibilities, guide them in doing their tasks through introducing intelligent strat-

egies to strengthen the way they teach, and even enumerates tips in managing group of young people. There is a need for communication in order to achieve high quality in delivering functions.

Aside from that, good communication would result to an easy and quick delegation of tasks. As a head teacher or a leader, being a good communicator is important because it will allow him to know what is going on already. It is important to know their feedbacks and insights on a certain task to be perform.

Communication is also a tunnel way to inspire others. The leader could do this through talking to them and

needs analyst, designer, materials developer, implementer and evaluator.

To make this job easier,

here is a simple guide I prepared for you as a product of my several years of experience as a trainer and my formal training in Doctor of Philosophy in Instructional Systems Design.

I do not claim full mastery of the subject matter though, nevertheless, this article offers a unique down-to-earth presentation of the training process.

The training process includes five stages that are performed by the trainer to successfully deliver training programs; they include analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation or the ADDIE model. (Remember, it is smarter to use models in order to be properly guided towards the right direction since they provide logical and sequential steps as to what to do from the start to finish.)

Each of these five stages play an equally important role in

shaping the success of the learning process.

Stage 1: Analysis Analysis or needs assessment is the systematic process of determining goals, identifying discrepancies between actual and desired conditions, and establishing priorities for action. Assessment helps the trainer determine whether or not training is the right response to a problem. Some of the needs assessment tools are: literature research, interviews, observations, survey, and group discussions.

Stage 2: Design Once the training needs have been assessed and training has been found to be the right response, it is time to design a training that meets the needs of both the learner and the organization. The training design may include rationale, objectives, participants, duration and venue, training approaches, training content, training management, evaluation scheme, and budgetary

requirements. The trainer may use holistic approach in identifying its parts.

Stage 3: Development Development is the actual production of the training package. It includes course materials for the trainers and the trainees, and evaluation instruments.

Stage 4: Implementation Implementation is the actual conduct of the training or the presentation of the learning experiences to the participants utilizing appropriate media.

Stage 5: Evaluation Evaluation is the process of determining the value and effectiveness of the learning program. The main factors measured in training evaluation are the knowledge, attitudes and skills (KAS) of trainees.

I hope that by diligently following these stages, you will be able to provide effective in-service trainings to your clientele.

One of our country’s greatest problems is Garbage disposal. Accordingly, it is the reason why our country is easily flooded because the drainage systems are now transformed into dumping areas which prevents the flow and absorption of water. Aside from causing flood, it is also a source of dreaded diseases that kills hundreds and even thousands of people nowadays.

The Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act was created last July 24, 2000 to deepen the environmental cause. Ecological Solid Waste Management is defined as a systematic administration of activities which provide the segregation at source, segregated transportation, storage, transfer, processing, treatment and disposal and other waste management activities which do not harm the environment.

We can prevent this entire catastrophic event if every one of us would be responsible enough in disposing our garbage properly. We have to commit ourselves to help

preventing more destruction of lives and properties caused by floods. We have to take this problem as our prime responsibility as concerned individuals and citizens of the country. We have to be involved in the segregation of our wastes. Moreover, we have to do something to make others aware of this need to resolve our problems. And above all we need to have a full understanding of the issue and reformation of attitudes so that we could develop honest concern towards the safeguard of our environment.

Ever since, the different public schools in the country has been teaching their children the proper waste disposal and was strengthened when Department of Education’s War on Waste Crusade in 1995 was implemented. But, still as these children went home an d in the community many of them forgot how they would disposed their garbage and how important it is .

Hence, We need to change our attitudes towards this issue and take it seriously and consider Proper Waste Disposal as our leading responsibility.

Dictionar y says that “Leadership” is an act of managing certain group of people. Certainly, being a leader is not an easy task, nor could be achieved on an overnight plan. Handling people is comprehensive and challenging that requires great effort and complex organization of ideas and action plans.

All schools have their own mission, vision and goals.

These are three things that mainly guide the school on what they are aiming for, and what direction they should go. In realizing all of these, an effective head teacher should stand tall in front of

everybody to direct them.

Each head teacher must know how he should handle his team of teachers and the entire school community to achieve these things. Other than this, he should opt what leadership style he must apply to keep the direction clearer and push people in moving.

WE need to open a new frontier in our exploration of good teaching – the inner landscape of a teacher’s life. To chart that landscape fully, three important paths must be taken – intellectual, emotional and spiritual – and none can be ignored. Reduce teaching to intellect and it becomes a cold abstraction. Reduce it to emotions and it becomes narcissistic. Reduce it to the spiritual and it loses its anchor to the world. Intellect, emotion and spirit depend on each other for wholeness. They are interwoven in the human self and in education at

its best and we need to interweave them in our pedagogical discourse as well.

By intellectual I mean the way we think about teaching and learning the form and content of our concepts of how people know and learn, of the nature of our students and our subjects. By emotional I mean the way we and our students feel as we teach and learn feelings that can enlarge or diminish the exchange between us.

By spiritual I mean the diverse ways we answer the heart’s longing to be connected with the largeness of life – a longing that animates love and work especially the work called teaching.

Dengue: an unceasing community threat

ASIA’s first dengue vaccination program has been launched and is picking up steam in the Philippines.

The Philippines became the first Asian country to license Sanofi Pasteur’s dengue vaccine Dengvaxia in 2015 following Mexico’s approval of the vaccine.

Dengvaxia is a tetravalent vaccine taken in three shots at six-month intervals and is recommended for individuals aged nine to 24.

The challenge with dengue is to develop a vaccine that is safe and effective against all four dengue strains. Dengvaxia is assessed to be 90 percent effective. DepEd, DOH and DILG collaborated in a major launch of the vaccine in 2016.

The WHO Strategic

Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization has reviewed Dengvaxia (CYD-TDV) in April 2016 and recommended introduction of the vaccine in countries or places where dengue is endemic even while awaiting WHO prequalification based on its own scientific appraisal of the clinical research that preceded adoption of the vaccine. The WHO Strategic Group of Experts on Immunization meets twice a year to vet new medical products like drugs and vaccines and advise WHO on what products to approve. The WHO formal prequalification guidelines and recommendations on the new dengue vaccine are expected to be released in May.

Noncognitive skills of students in the classroom

LIKE its pal soft skills, non-cognitive skills are qualities like integrity, drive and creativity. Of course, non-cognitive is a bit of a misnomer considering social and emotional factors are also brainrelated. Basically, advocates for non-cognitive skills acknowledge that personality – in addition

to reading and long division – has an effect on lifetime achievement.

In the same way the whole child model emphasizes developing healthy citizens, focusing on noncognitive skills moves the education conversation away from test scores and other metrics of achievement.

High quality learning must be about the whole child and the whole family. High quality preschool not only

builds cognitive skills, it builds the non-cognitive skills as well. It promotes healthy social, emotional and physical development.

Elements of self discipline measured through commonly used teacher, parent and child self-report instruments have outperformed IQ test scores in predicting grades and attainment in addition to accounting for achievement differences between

boys and girls with similar IQ levels. Similarly, poor behaviour in Grade 8 is negatively associated with future educational attainment even after controlling for test scores and background characteristics.

Grade 1 teacher ratings of children’s temperament and disposition are positively associated with years of schooling at age 22 even after controlling for cognitive test scores.

This framework has been based on classroom research for the past 30 years.

When you realize that parents and teachers all want the best for kids, there must be some common ground.

tional support to students are more likely to find that parents helped improve student behavior. Teachers should recognize that parents can be a valuable ally on this front.

Teachers think that parent communication is the hardest part of their job. However, teachers just need to have the right mindset and use parent relations to make their job easier and students more successful. They have

the same goal – they both want the student to do well.

A teacher can find ways to use that resource to help students and make their own job easier.

So start early. Cultivate positive relationships with parents from the beginning of the school year. Develop a relationship with parents of students who you know may be difficult but with a positive approach.
