Do not overcharge fares, contract or, refuse passengers

BSP extends period to exchange old banknotes

HE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is warning taxi drivers that their licenses will be cancelled if they overcharge fare, contract or refuse passengers.

The LTFRB also directed taxi operators to supervise/ monitor their drivers and that it reserves the right to suspend or cancel their certificates of public convenience.

The public is advised to send their complaints with details such as location, nature of complaint, picture, etc. and assures that these will be addressed by the agency.

Earlier, The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Northern Mindanao (LTFRB-10) launched “Oplan Isnabero.”

THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced on Wednesday that the Monetary Board (MB) decided to extend the period to exchange old banknotes in authorized agent banks of the BSP until March 31, 2017 from its initial deadline of December 31, 2016.

In a briefing Wednesday, BSP Deputy Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. said the MB’s decision to give a 90day extension to exchange old banknotes series or the New Design Series (NDS) for New Generation Currency (NGC) is a response to public clamor to extend the period of exchange.

NDS notes were launched in 1985 which features the old BSP logo with eight denominations such as P5, P10, P20, P50, P100, P200, P500, and P1,000.

NGC notes were released in 2010, featuring the new BSP logo and have six denominations: P20, P50, P100, P200, P500, and P1,000.

6 hurt in NorthCot roadside explosion Monday, January 2, 2017

COTABATO City--Six persons were wounded when a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) went off along the national highway in Aleosan, North Cotabato Wednesday night.

Lt. Col. Edgar delos Reyes, commander of the Army’s 34th Infantry Bat-

talion, confirmed that a roadside explosion took place in Sitio Dos, Barangay Pagangan national highway around 10:15 p.m.

He said that a lamp post of the Cotabato Electric Cooperative was damaged from the impact of the explosion.

“Our team of soldiers and EOD [explosive ordnance disposal] experts are inspecting the area now,” Delos Reyes said.

The provincial government of North Cotabato said that shrapnel hit six persons as a 10-wheeler truck happened to pass by

Awareness against terror threat among Dabawenyos high: Official DAVAO City––Task Force Davao has responded to clear more than 70 unattended baggage since it tightens the security of the city since the September 2 blast at the Roxas night market.

Brig. General Gilbert Gapay, assistant commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command and chief of the Task Force Haribon said the awareness level among residents is now high considering that they actually report to authorities baggage left unattended to ensure the safety of themselves and their surroundings.

He explained that the primary mission of the TF Haribon is to deter any terror act.

“There must be no repeat of the September 2 explosion in the city,” Gapay said.

He said the security of the city must be enhanced knowing that it hosts several national and international activities.

Gapay said that as one of the proactive measures, the security sector also monitors the movement of terror groups and conducts preemptive strike on terror groups before they can actualize their plans.

“As much as possible, we have to neutralize them in their respective areas,” he said.

Gapay said threat groups must not be allowed to enter the city.

He said intelligence and information gathering is also enhanced to peer on the activities and locations of terror leaders and members no matter how hard it is, knowing that they operate in small numbers.

Gapay also guaranteed the core competence of TF Haribon given its equipment and skills, night flying capability, air and naval components.

Palace cites achievements of Duterte administration, prospects for 2017

A PALACE official on Tuesday enumerated the achievements of the newly minted administration of President Rodrigo Duterte this year and its prospects for growth next year.

At a press briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella highlighted the administration’s accomplishment over the first six months particularly in aspects of economic growth, employment, infrastructure, international partnerships, the war against illegal drugs, and peace talks.

“Regarding economic growth, the Philippines is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia in 2016.

With a 7% GDP growth in the first three quarters, we are sure to achieve, if not surpass, our target of 6 to 7% growth for the whole of 2016,” Abella said.

“This means that there are approximately 41.7 million Filipinos employed, while unemployment rate also declined to a record low of 4.7 percent,” he said.

President Aquino imposed after she took her oath in 1986. She threw out the 1973 Constitution and then installed a government by one person, for one person, and of one person. I remember that those who are objecting to martial law today were all deafeningly silent when Aquino installed a government of one man---or, one woman, to be exact.

Many apologists would justify Aquino’s revolutionary government as a necessary evil at that time, an imperative to rebuild democracy and propel Filipinos to an economic life better than what they supposedly underwent under the Marcos regime. And this leads me to my point: whatever kind of government that maybe installed here, it is the best government if it helps our people to overcome poverty and suffering.

-oooANY GOV’ T THAT MAKES LIFE BETTER IS GOOD: The question is, did the Aquino revolutionary government improve the lives of Filipinos? We all know the answer to this.

With power outages, coups, and corruption among favored friends and relatives running wild during the six years following 1986, life became worse for millions of us. Economic prosperity came only to allies.

So let us stop quibbling about martial law “not being a laughable matter”, or is a danger to democracy.

The Philippines have had democracy for the last three decades or so after 1986 and yet many of our countrymen continue to be impoverished, and are willing to brave misery and death in other countries just to earn a living.

What we need at this point is a sincere government, one whose leaders are motivated with nothing but a desire to exterminate crime and criminality, corruption in both the private and public sectors, and true economic prosperity that is felt not only by the oligarchs and the powerful, but by all Filipinos. If martial law--or even a revolutionary government---can bring these about, then so be it.

Philippine Army fully supportive of peace talks

CAGAYAN de Oro City-The military has maintained it is supportive of the ongoing peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front (NDF) despite reports of human rights violations being committed by members of state security forces in communities affected by conflict.

North Cotabato gets P25-m anti-poverty funds from DA-12 Monday, January 2, 2017

COTABATO City–– The Department of Agriculture in Region 12 has special projects for indigents residents that will help them improve lives and have decent sources of income, officials said yesterday.

Engr. Mila Casis, DA regional director for the SOCCSKSARGEN region, on Thursday handed over a check to acting North

Cotabato Governor Shirlyn Macasarte amounting to PHP25 million as initial fund of Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program.

SOCCSKSARGEN is composed of the provinces of North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and the cities of Cotabato, Kidapawan, Tacurong, Koronadal and Gen. Santos.

North Cotabato has 17 municipalities and one city.

The release of SAAD fund for North Cotabato came after Director Casis facilitated the fund transfer

for local governments of Sarangani and Maguindanao last week.

SAAD is a strategy of the Department of Agriculture to look at the weaknesses of an area in terms of potentials for food production and livelihood programs.

Casis said the program is in support of President Rodrigo Duterte’s thrust to increase food production and alleviate poverty.

It intends to alleviate poverty through increased food production and productivity in the target areas by providing the appropriate technology, financing,

marketing and other support services in order to make the farmers and fisherfolk productive and profitable.

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol has repeatedly reminded local government executives that the DA programs aimed at alleviating poverty must be implemented with full transparency and no delays.

Reiterating President Duterte’s policy of no irregularities, Pinol said he expect project implementers to effectively make lives better for farmers to help ensure food sufficiency.

Meanwhile, at the same press briefing, Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Gerardo Bayugo called for an intensified and collective effort to stop the spread of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in the country.

He noted that the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, could be prevented through collective societal effort, increasing awareness on the disease especially among youth and vulnerable populations, promoting use of condom, establishing test and treat service delivery networks nationwide and ending stigmatization and discrimination in workplaces.

He underscored the need to foster collaboration with other government agencies such as the Department of Education, as well as community-based organizations in order to reach the young and impart to them the correct information on HIV and its consequences and how to stop its transmission and spread.

Bayugo said the DOH is proposing the distribution of condoms to schools particularly among youth ages 15 to 24 as current statistics showed an increasing number of HIV cases among those ages.

Bayugo said they are eyeing to start distribution of condoms next year specifically in regions with the most number of HIV cases such as in National Capital Region, Calabarzon, and Region III. “The DOH would like to say that the promotion of condoms does not encourage risky behaviors, rather it promotes responsibility, respect, and good health habit,” he said.

Bayugo likewise gave an update on the government’s “Iwas Paputok” campaign days prior to the country’s celebration of New Year.

He said there have been 70 firework-related injuries reported as of this date, which is much lower than the figures last year, and even compared to the last five years average.

“We’re praying that we’ll

see less cases and no more deaths, no more injuries, no more amputation, so that everybody will be having a really prosperous and happy New Year,” he said.

Palace welcomes SWS survey showing 95% of Filipinos to welcome 2017 with hope THE Malacanang on Thursday welcomed a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showing 95 percent of the Filipinos are entering year 2017 with hope rather than with fear.

Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said the SWS survey could be indicator that the Filipino people are satisfied with the performance of President Rodrigo Duterte in the first six months of his administration.

“I suppose it’s part of the whole package, you know. Based on results, apparently the public is quite satisfied with the performance of the administration,” Duterte said in a Palace press briefing.

The SWS fourth quarter survey conducted from December 3 to 6 found that 95 percent of adult Filipinos has said they are entering 2017 with hope.

The number is up from 92 percent last year under the previous administration of former President Benigno Aquino III. Based on face-to-face interviews with about 1,5000 adults, the survey showed that the attitude of hope is widespread in all areas with 97 percent in Luzon, 95 percent in National Capital Region, 95 percent in Mindanao and 92 percent in the Visayas.

The same survey also found out

that 50 percent of the respondents were satisfied with the government institutions; 17 percent were dissatisfied and 30 percent undecided on the performance of the Cabinet of President Duterte.

“It yielded a good +32 percent net satisfaction score,” Abella said.

Last December 24, the SWS also released a survey which showed that 81 percent of the Filipinos have “much trust” in President Duterte.

Ten percent are undecided while 9 percent have ‘little trust.’

This gives a net trust rating of +72 or four points below the excellent +76 trust rating. (PNA)
