THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is blaming utility firms and telecommunication companies for the clogging of Bitan-ag Creek last Monday, causing it to swell and flood the USTPLimketkai complex in the afternoon, stranding hundreds of college students and mall shoppers, hotel guests and employees. In an interview, District Engineer Anastacio Marundan of the DPWH Cagayan de Oro 2nd Engineering District said that they have discovered wires from six companies dangling below the elevated Bitan-ag bridge, causing garbage thrown by people to stick to those wires and clogging the creek more. Marundan said that as early as last October, they have already called the attention of those companies to reinstall their wires at a higher elevation considering that the old Bitan-ag bridge had been ramped up earlier that year. But Marundan said that to this day, only one company – Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD) – complied. The rest did not. He identified those firms as Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company (Cepalco), Misortel, PLDT, Globe and Smart. Marundan also said that DPWH is declogging Bitanag Creek once a month and the bulk of the silt is household garbage. Most of them were stuck in the wires owned by the See blames, page A7
