SoCot eyes PhilHealth’s detox package for rehab
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The provincial government of South Cotabato plans to avail of the medical detoxification package offered by the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) for some of the drug surrenderers. South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Avance-Fuentes said Tuesday assessment and evaluation is ongoing for the Surfacing Individuals Involved on Drugs or SPIDs in the province who might qualify for the detoxification assistance. She said the assessment is being conducted by personnel commissioned by the province’s Technical Working Group for the SPIDs, which reaches around 9,000. “We are specifically determining the level of interventions needed by these individuals,” the governor said. Fuentes cited that PhilHealth’s detoxification package will help a lot in defraying the expenses of the qualified SPIDs, especially See eyes, page B7

DAVAO CITY -- The visit of First Lady Akie Abe, wife of Japan Prime Minisher Shinzo Abe, to the Japanese Cemetery in Mintal is expected to boost the barangay’s (village’s) bid to become known as the Philippines’ “Little Tokyo”. Around 300 of the first Japanese residents of the city are buried in the Japanese graveyard in Mintal. The Japanese Cemetery was
built in 1910 by Kyouzaburo Ohta, a Japanese who owned vast abaca plantations in the area. Mrs. Abe, who spent a few minutes at the Tower of Japanese Residents and the Muyu Monument inside the cemetery, offered her prayers to her countrymen who passed away during the war. “The President is very grateful for the help that t h e Jap an e s e gove r n ment is extending to the
Filipinos through Prime Minister Abe and his wife Akie Abe,” Cielito “Honeylette” Avanceña, President Duterte’s common-law wife, said. The Muyu Monument, which serves as a marker for the Japanese graves, was built three years ago when President Rodrigo Duterte was still the city mayor of Davao. DAVAO CITY -- The People’s Republic of China will remain a firm ally of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as it welcomed the Philippines taking the leadership of the ten-member group. This support even extends to the maritime security and cooperation that the ASEAN included in its six thematic priorities. This was emphasized by Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua in an interview on the sidelines of the launching of the Philippines chairmanship of the ASEAN 2017 being held on Monday afternoon at the SMX Convention Center in this city. The Chinese envoy said China will always pursue sea disputes by peaceful means and consensus-based between China and ASEAN. Maritime security and cooperation is the third agenda of the ASEAN that will be pursued this year with the Philippines taking the helm of the organization. The agenda adheres to the rule of law for the peaceful resolution of disputes and the preservation and protection of maritime resources. Mr. Zhao admitted they like the way how the current administration is treating the arbitral victory of the Philippines on the West Philippines Sea to maintain stability in the area.
