Region 11 investments hit almost P8B as of 2016 3Q

DAVAO CITY – Investments in Davao Region reached P7.684 billion as of third quarter of 2016, records from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 showed.

The third quarter investments in 2016 already surpassed by 38.7 percent the entire 2015 record of P4.708 billion.

DTI 11 reported that of these investments, Davao City bagged 33 percent, Davao del Sur 29 percent, Davao del Norte 27 percent, Compostella Valley 7 percent, Davao Oriental 4 percent.

Angelo Andrei Malate, Wildon Dee Laguna and Jan Hilly Villaquer, grade six pupils of Dagumbaan Elementary School won First Place in Science Investigatory Project Physical Science Division level last October 14-15, 2016 in the National Science And technology Fair 2016 and First Science Intervention Material Exhibit.

The study entitled “ Waste Kalburo (Calcium Carbide) as Additive for Non-Load Bearing Concrete Hollowblocks” was a research developed by these three young pupils with the guidance of their

adviser Ms. Jasmen S. Litub using Waste Kalburo collected from the vendors of the Public Market in Maramag, Bukidnon and used it in five different set-ups as additives of cement and fine aggregates in forming non-load bearing concrete hollowblocks.

“We are so proud of the outcome of the contest for it is first time the school join IP ( Investigatory Project)” said Mr. Wildon Dee Laguna. This experience brought not just honor but motivation to all pupils to learn and experiment waste and utilize to be a new stuff of the community.

HIV: Prevention in Schools

The Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that causes HIV infection and over time acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive. Without treatment, average survival time after infection with HIV is estimated to be 9 to 11 years, depending on the HIV subtype.

With HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preejaculate, or breast milk.

Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells. According to the Department of Health, the Philippines has only 12,592 people living with HIV / AIDS making it a “low prevalence” country.

However, this is NOT the case. DOH only records reported cases which is only about 10% of people

infected with HIV / AIDS in the Philippines.

How does education help? Adolescents who know more about HIV/ AIDS are more likely to get tested. Education also reduces the discrimination against HIV-positive children and adolescents that can lead them to drop out of school.

In Latin America, people with secondary education are 45% more tolerant towards HIV-positive people than those with only primary education.

Ensuring all children have access to school is essential, as young people who have stayed in school longer are more aware of HIV and AIDS. They are more inclined to take protective measures such as using condoms, getting tested and discussing AIDS with their partners. Schooling reduces the risk of HIV infection – but needs to play a bigger part in communicating knowledge about HIV and AIDS.

TEACHERS should learn to love research because it is only in researching that we can sharpen our skills that we want to impart to our students whether you’re teaching elementary or junior high or even senior high. Teacher-researchers can be characterized as those practitioners who attempt to better understand their practice and its impact on their students by researching the relationship between teaching and learning in their world of work.

Across all learning sectors, research is emphasizing the importance of developing new approaches that involve deep theoretical knowledge and

understanding. Indeed, many teachers are making grassroots attempts to read, use and generate research these days. We love this.

Teachers like us love to engage with our colleagues by collaborating with each other on a specific topic to research about whether it’s physics or math.

In fact, I would suggest that DepEd would organize research project competitions first from the district level to the division level to the regional level and to the national level. Let the research congress be a forum to hone the skills of the teachers. This way, our students would be globally competitive, reining in lots of opportunities for our countrymen.

PUPILS PERFORMS EARTHQUAKE DRILL

Portulin Elementary School Teachers and pupils faithfully responded to DRRM Advisory consonance with the DepEd Order # 21 on the simultaneous Earthquake Drill to prepare the school particularly the pupils in case of earthquake occurrence.

The teacher constantly conducted simulation inside the classroom wherein pupils were taught on how to react and move before, during and after earthquake. Important thing to remember should be to drop, hold and cover their

heads under the desks, chairs or table and look for a safer place after the shaking and not to run or panic for their safety.

The evacuation area of the school is the front lawn which is safe and free from failing objects.

As observed there were pupils who made fun out of the situation and some were not seriously following instructions which lead to the repetitions of the said activity. At the end, the pupils performed and followed instruction well.

DepEd’s SBFP: Addressing Nutritional Deficiencies

To address undernutrition and short-term hunger among public school children, The Department of Education (DepEd) implements the SchoolBased Feeding Program for School Year 2016-2017.

Under the program, all schools are encouraged to set up and maintain Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) to supply the needs for SBFP. Also, inspire the parents and

families of beneficiaries to have their own home garden for the continuous nutritional improvement.

The beneficiaries of this program are those children among the Severely Wasted and Wasted learners from Kinder to Grade 6. With the used of Body Mass Index, the children’s nutritional status was being identified on the first week of the beginning of classes. The SBFP provides

complete nutritious meals to the children, following the developed standardized recipes using malunggay and 20-day menu using locally produced food.

The feeding program is an avenue to improve and develop nutrition values and behavior of learners.

The feeding activity will last for 120 days (3 months) within the school year.

The SBFP should improve the nutritional status of the beneficiaries and also improve their attendance and performance. Ben-

eficiaries who are not gaining weight or with a stagnant status will be further assess by school’s health personnel.

As one of DepEd’s school beneficiaries, Calapaton Elementary School of Kitaotao Bukidnon truthfully implementing the program for the School Year 2016-2017.

We would like to acknowledge the benefits of our pupils upon having the program. We will look forward on the favorable results of SBFP.

IPEd and its mission to educate more learners

The Department of Education’s thrust of achieving education for all is continuing. It does not just provide accessibility to learning among poorest of the poor but as well those who are located in remote areas. Through its implemented programs and assistance as well, education has been extended to different ethnic groups, making learning parallel to their practices and culture

for it to be more understandable, comprehensive and effective to deliver, resulting to appreciation of education among these people.

In 2015, as a matter of fact, the Department of Education has issued a department order putting Indigenous Peoples Education into effect. Under Department Order number 32, series of 2015, an IPEd Curriculum Frame-

work was disseminated as guide to schools and other education programs as they engage with indigenous communities, delivering education based on their respective educational and social contexts.

The design of IPEd is actually culturally-appropriate, encouraging love, appreciation and promotion for a person’s own culture. Furthermore, the curriculum is also responsive, being anchored on the defining features of indigenous communities:

the ancestral domain, the community’s worldview and its indigenous cultural institutions.

In the mentioned year, the program has benefit 1.19-million of learners enrolled in public schools, considered as a milestone in the enhancement of IPEd Program. DepEd further hopes that this year, two years since the beginning of implementation, the program will light hope of another millions of indigenous people.

Meaning, there are a lot of information pieces recorded in there. People would not completely know what kind of information will pop up after clicking the Enter key. This goes the same with children. Thus, it is

important for a parent, for one, to guide children through providing them safe links to read and explore or through explaining to them every critical datum that a child sees in the screen.

It is also important for a parent to look into both positive and negative impact with the use of internet. He should not scare the child on the negative things about internet because it will create bad perspective.

Instead, he should discuss positive things such as stressing its good use in education and in dissemination of important information.

MORAL VALUES SHOULD BE PART OF OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM

Holistic development of an individual is incomplete if moral values are neglected. We are now experiencing number of assault cases, increasing numbers of youth and adult people involved that lead to destruction of oneself and a problem to the society.

No more respect for elders and females, speaking lies became their habits, corruptions and jealousy everywhere depleting the much desired values. If this

cannot be attained at home for so many reasons, may be the school and teachers can be a part by teaching moral values as part of children’s education.

To be a moral person every belief should be strong and determined. We must have courage to do the right and fight for the right. One must be trained in the same from the beginning of life.

Therefore, values must be taught and should be indispensable part of our

BSP releases results of the 2014 consumer finance survey The 2014 Consumer Finance Survey (CFS) is the second quadrennial survey conducted after the 2009 inaugural CFS. The CFS generates data on the financial conditions of households, including what they own (financial and non-financial assets) as well as from whom and how much they borrow (sources of credit and level of indebtedness). It also generates data on the income, spending and insurance coverage of households. The 2014 CFS has a sample size of 18,000 households covering all regions in the country, except Leyte province (displaced due to typhoon Yolanda) and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

CFS results indicate a significant increase in the country’s labor force for the next ten years The results of the survey showed that the Philippines has a young population. The age distribution of household members showed that 21.5 percent were 5-14 years old and 20.2 percent were 15-24 years old while those who were about to retire or were close to compulsory retirement (aged 55-64 years old) and the elderly (65 years old and over) accounted for 8.0 percent and 5.9 percent of the household members, respectively, at the time of the survey. These figures indicated that a significant increase in the country’s labor force could be expected considering that a much bigger number of young people will enter the labor force every year compared to the number of older people who leave the labor force working age group.

Home appliances, own residence and motor vehicles are the most common types of assets owned by households The most common types of assets held by households were home appliances and their own residence. Other types of assets owned by households were motor vehicles, retirement insurance, deposit accounts and other real property apart from respondent’s residence such as land, house and lot, and farm and precious objects. A very small percent-

age of households owned securities and investment products such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and unit investment trust funds.

Household liabilities are in the form of consumer and real property loans With respect to liabilities, a bigger percentage of households had outstanding consumer loans such as all-purpose loans and motor vehicle loans while few households had outstanding loans on their residence and other real property and credit card loans.

Three in every four households own/co-own their houses or both houses and lots House dwelling is the single biggest asset of many households. About threefourths (or 75.5 percent) of households were homeowners (with 44.1 percent owning or co-owning their houses and lots while 31.4 percent owning or coowning their houses only).

Non-homeowners, which comprise about 24.6 percent of the total number of households surveyed, were renting/leasing (6.7 percent), and neither owning nor renting their housing unit (17.8 percent), or caretakers of other people’s residence (0.1 percent).

Majority of households that owned their houses/houses and lot acquired their property through cash followed by inheritance/gift (39.4 percent).

One in two households pay an annual interest rate of 10 percent or lower on housing loans In terms of lending rates, 50.8 percent of the households (with loans) paid an annual interest rate of 10 percent and below on their housing loans.

Nearly 6 in 10 households with outstanding housing loans pay ahead or on schedule More than half of households with outstanding loans (55.9 percent) paid their monthly amortization either ahead of or on schedule, while the rest were behind schedule.

One in eight households owns other real property apart from their residence About 13 percent of households owned other real property (aside from their residence) in 2014. Of these, 83.5 percent owned one other real property, 13.2 percent owned two, and 3.4 percent owned three or more. A considerable number of households that owned other real property acquired them through inheritance/gift (59.8 percent).

These were followed by those that acquired property through cash payment (33.2 percent), Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (3 percent), loan (2.1 percent), and combined cash and loan (1.5 percent).

More than a quarter of households own at least one motor vehicle The survey showed that more than a quarter (27.5 percent) of households owned at least one vehicle.

Among those households that owned vehicles, about six for every ten (60.3 percent) owned motorcycles.

One in eight households that owns a motor vehicle avail themselves of a motor vehicle loan About 11.9 percent of households that owned motor vehicles had outstanding loans on their vehicles. A bigger percentage of NCR households had outstanding loans on vehicles (15.4 percent) compared to those in AONCR (11.5 percent).

pliances Majority of households (90.6 percent) owned various types of household appliances. In the NCR, almost all households (99.7 percent) owned household appliances. Meanwhile, in AONCR, 10.9 percent of households did not have any household appliance.

On average, five different types of appliances could be found in any household in 2014. NCR households own seven different types of appliances while in AONCR, there were three types.

Eighty six percent of households are unbanked Majority of households or 86 percent did not have a deposit account. This means that only the remaining 14 percent save their money in banks. The foremost reason cited by households for not having a deposit account was not having enough money to keep an account. Other reasons cited by households were: (1) do not need a bank/cash account (2 percent), (2) bank/institution location is far (1.7 percent), (3) cannot manage an account (1.2 percent), (4) service charges are too high (1.0 percent), and other reasons (1.6 percent) such as minimum balance is too high, do not like to deal with banks/institutions and do not trust banks/institutions.

Based on the odds ratios, results show that majority of household heads who are employed in private establishments and government are banked.

In contrast, majority of household heads who are self-employed, worked for private household, other household’s farm, and in other informal occupations, are unbanked.

Music rhymes is all parts of our lives and is very important in the development of preliteracy and per-numeracy skills. Numeracy is more than the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and use number. In early childhood the development

of numeracy involves the kids by singing the number rhymes, fitting boxes, sorting, pouring, measuring.

These are some of the prenumeracy skills which we want to encourage children to develop.

Why is literacy and numeracy important? Children who do not learn to read, write and communicate effectively at primary level are more likely to leave the school early, unemployed or low skilled jobs have poorer

emotional and physical health and end up in poverty. Literacy difficulties are linked to truancy, exclusion, social consequences such as drugs, alcohol, and increased health and reduced life chances.

It is one of the family’s responsibility to build a good learning environment inside their home. It is because how the child values learning inside their home is also the same on how he see the importance of learning, once he enters school.

Parents are encouraged to show support in their children’s learning process.

Parental involvement is a plus factor in pushing academic achievements among students.

In various researches, it is stated that a child having parents who entice him to do good and supports him during studying hours at home are more likely to excel in class. Hence, it is always better for parents to even recognize small

achievements and show interest to their child’s performance in order for him to realize that his parents value education, and he must do the same as well. As the same, parents involvement could also impact children’s overall behaviour and attendance during classes.

Further, the atmosphere inside a home could also affect learning abilities. In most cases, a harmonious family relationship is a great help to a child, for it encourages passion in pursuing academic excellence and concentration in studies.

In contrast, a family where there is conflict can affect a student’s performance in class negatively.

Mostly, this will lessen a student’s interest in his studies. Worse, this situation will even raise emotional problems that will break concentration and discourage appreciation in learning.

The family relationship, home atmosphere and parental involvement in a child’s academic life are important items in successful learning. Thus, it is necessary that these should be managed well.

Advancing teaching through interactive computer-assisted instruction

The world is getting more modernized as time flies. The use of advance gadgets such as computers, mobile phones, tablets and the like is already considered as normal in the present time.

Learning also evolve with time. As people climb themselves to the next level, the same goes with learning, comes to its system, delivery and even access.

Schools adopted the interactive computer-assisted instruction. Letting their selves indulged in kind of advancement, this instruction gives students the chance to make use of the fast-growing world of information and communication technologies and explore knowledge beyond four-corner classroom could offer.

The interactive computerassisted instruction encourage one-to-one interaction.

The student could learn on his own because the lesson would be delivered according to his distinguished time and way. It will give him the freedom to experiment with different options. In other term, this kind of instruction would be a self-directed learning where students could decide when, where, and what to learn.

It will also help teachers to devote more time to each individual inside the

classroom. Fact be told, there are students who can hardly cope up with their classmates. There are also some who have problems in understanding the lessons way different from the others. Thus, if chance a teacher could talk to students one by one, their queries will be addressed directly. This is most useful especially to those slow and shy learners who cannot address their ideas in group.

This kind of instruction could also make students learn more and more rapidly. The ideas produced by an interactive computer such as multimedia presentations would help students to understand difficult concepts. Moreover, aside from achieving immediate feedback to the answers ilicited in the computers, this kind of instruction allows students to proceed at their own pace.

It might be true that interactive computer-assisted instruction has posted challenge to educators for it requires new demand on teachers and an increase in their capacity to assimilate and spread new ideas.

However, teachers should just view this instruction as helping tool in improving knowledge along with what time requires.

DepEd’s programs, in its aim to produce career-ready graduates

Technical-Vocational Track is one part of Senior High School curriculum of K to 12 Basic Education System, a system now followed by the country.

This subpart is being stressed already in the curriculum which one of the end-purposes is to stop the increase of out-of-school youth.

The tech-voc training is beneficial to high school students in ways possible; whether he would pursue to college, or enter entrepreneurship or employment.

This indicated that 30 percent of the households still prefer to maintain deposit accounts even if their average daily balance falls below the required amount to earn interest or had earned a negligible amount of interest.

The percentage of respondents who have one or more retirement plan/s declines The survey results showed that the percentage of respondents that had at least one retirement or insurance plan from both/either the government and/or private companies stood at 24.2 percent in 2014.

The percentage of respondents’ spouses who had at least one retirement or insurance plan from both/ either the government and/or private companies declined to 27.1 percent in 2014 from 44.9 percent in 2009.

Inheritance come mostly from parents About 24.6 percent of households reported receiving an inheritance. Majority of them received only one inheritance. A bigger percentage of households in AONCR received inheritance (25.4 percent) than in NCR (19.3 percent). Inheritance came mostly from parents (88.2 percent), followed by grandparents (5.4 percent), other relatives (4.2 percent).

The most common inheritance received was real estate such as land or farm (58.0 percent), and houses, condominiums, and townhouses (30.4 percent). Households also received inheritance in the form of house and lot (9.9 percent), cash (1.9 percent) and others (0.9 percent).

Two percent of households have credit cards About two percent of households had credit cards.

A bigger percentage of NCR households were credit card

Technical-vocational education is mainly to prepare students, not just in higher education but also to future employment.

DepEd believes that ST VEP is an ef fe c t ive strategy to properly address the perennial problem of poverty and is designed to equip individuals with technical-vocational and academic competencies, proper work ethics and desirable values that will make them economically-stable, responsible, law-abiding, productive and competitive in the world of work.

The implementation is made through training students with certifiable, vocational, industrial and other relevant skills. It is also through improving high school students’ performance in skills and

academic competence, achievement tests, accreditation and equivalency for certification programs, and as well as upgrade the competency of tech-voc teachers in the delivery of basic and certifiable skills in different courses through skills trainings, in order for them to train tech-voc students more effectively.

STVEP does not just minimize educational problems, through encouraging appreciation of learning; it also gives individuals the chance to be able to contribute in the improvement of the countr y, terms of employment status and income.

The main sources of household income are wages and salaries More than half (50.5 percent) of the respondents’ household income came from wages and salaries. Other sources of household income were businesses including self-employment (18.1 percent), financial assistance from government (13.5 percent), financial assistance from abroad (13.2 percent) and financial assistance from other households (10 percent).

Two in 10 households own a business or a farm The percentage of households who own a farm or business decreased from 40.6

percent in 2009 to 18.1 percent in 2014. Businesses of households were mainly in wholesale and retail trade; agriculture, hunting and forestry; and accommodation and food service activities. In NCR, businesses were mostly in the wholesale and retail trade; followed by accommodation and food service activities; and other industries.

One in eight households receives financial assistance from abroad About one-eighth of households received financial assistance from abroad in the form of cash, gift, or other forms of transfers in 2013.

The average amount received by each of these households was £59,295 a year, while the median amount was £10,000.

Respondents are inclined towards saving and display good sense in the use of their extra money The percentage of respondents with inclination towards saving money and putting it in the bank (if they have surplus money) increased. The increase was more pronounced in the NCR at 60.5 percent (from 51.8 percent in the 2009 survey) than in AONCR (for Regions 1, 7, and 11) at 32.9 percent (from 29.4 percent). Those who

preferred to save cash at home remained broadly steady at 38 percent. The improvement in respondents’ preference to save in banks could be due to their perception that it is safer to keep money in the bank.

Seven in ten respondents are not risk takers when it comes to income and business Most respondents would not risk their income to undertake risk-taking activities that could possibly increase their current level of income.

About 7 in 10 respondents chose to stick to their current level of sure income of £2,500 per week rather than take the risk of entering into a new business and earn from £l,000-£4,000 per week. Likewise, respondents were asked also to choose between receiving £10,000 cash now or waiting a month to get £10,500. Majority of respondents preferred to get the cash at once rather than wait for a month even the amount will increase. These attitudes reflect respondents’ risk aversion with respect to income from both economic activities and interest earnings.

Survey results affirm relevance of the BSP’s financial inclusion and financial education initiatives Some policy implications can be drawn from the results of the survey. First, the government and the private sector should strengthen efforts and advocacy towards greater financial inclusion. One of the initiatives of the BSP is to support and intensify the expansion of micro-banking offices (MBOs) in unbanked municipalities to enable lower income individuals to open an account with a maintaining balance less than P100 and without dormancy charges.

This is line with the BSP Circular No. 694 issued on 14 October 2010 which allows for the establishment of micro-banking offices in unbanked cities and municipalities that service micro deposits and micro loans.

Second, some government retirement programs/ policies should be expanded to cover more working and non-working Filipinos.

GSIS slates release of cash benefit to members Jan. 6 to 31 State pension fund Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has started releasing last January 6 a total amount of Php185 million in cash benefit for its members.

“The total cash benefit this year is far lower than the Php848 million GSIS released last year due to the decreased net income from Php140 billion in 2014 to Php47 billion in 2015,” Officer-in-Charge and concurrent Senior Vice President for NCR Operations Nora Malubay-Saludares said.

OIC Saludares added that GSIS’s income was affected by the decline in the Philippine stock market in 2015.

Members whose compulsory life insurance policies have been in force for at least one year as of December 31, 2015, are entitled to cash benefit. Also eligible are active members whose policies matured within 2015 and whose employers were suspended as of December 31, 2015. Back in July 2013, GSIS has restored the loan and cash benefit privileges of mem-

bers working in suspended agencies.

Meanwhile, GSIS members whose policies lapsed in 2015 are ineligible to receive the benefit. Similarly, policyholders whose policies were terminated due to death, retirement, or separation as of December 2015 are ineligible to the benefit.

Members with outstanding consolidated loan balances or unpaid premiums for at least 12 months as of December 31, 2015 are also excluded.

GSIS has begun electronically crediting the cash benefit of qualified GSIS members to their GSIS eCard or unified multipurpose identification (UMID) card, which is expected to be completed by January 31, 2017. Crediting of the benefit is done by batch or cluster to maintain orderly withdrawals.

Helping Solves Malnutrition

Malnutrition is one of the greatest problems today. It is not due to scarcity of food because our country is rich in vegetable products but due to the wrong intake or improper utilization of food by the body.

The existence of below normal pupils in terms of the nutritional status of Portulin Elementary School as reflected in the reports prepared and submitted by the School Nutrition and feeding teacher requires the teachers and parents attention. Out of 209 pupils this school year 32 of them falls under below normal and most of them are in the primary grades.

This alarming number of below normal pupils prompted the school to encourage and intensify Gulayan sa Paaralan at sa inclusion should be increased and financial education in the country’s school system from elementary to college should be institutionalized.

Fourth, there is a need to also include in the government’s financial education programs the importance of retirement insurance and regular/timely payment of premiums to national pen-

They guide them and teach them the right things.

Family is one of the most important group to which all of children wanted to have.

Portulin Elementary school celebrated Family day last December 13, 2016 with the theme “Father, Mother I Love You”.

The program started with an invocation through multimedia presentation followed by the National Anthem and so on.

Parents were entertained by the different presentations coming from pupils and teachers.

The most awaited and exciting part of the program was the FAMILY PARLOR GAMES prepared by teachers which bought too much fun.

Parents enjoyed playing with their children and their children too were so amazed how their parents played the game and

eventually won and lost in some of the games.

The salient part of the activity is that it strengthens the bonds between the pupils and parents as well as with the teachers.

Through the engagement in the different activities, the children will realized how much their parents loved them and it will help boost their confidence to actively participate in whatever activities especially if they gained support from their loved ones.

It is indeed a successful event to cherish and remember and worth to be celebrated by parents with children who wants to feel valued by just seeing their parents being in such a rare event.

Through the collaboration of teachers, parents and stakeholders, the activity became a successful affair for by observing those happy faces with a smile, one can conclude that it was a successful day for everybody.

Two panels each declared a unilateral ceasefire shortly before the start of the first round of formal pace talks in Oslo, Norway in late August. They gave themselves 60 days from the end of the first round to forge a bilateral ceasefire agreement but no agreement was signed within 60 days or even during the second round of formal peace talks in October. “ The problem with unilateral ceasefire is that it lacks the definition of terms. You do not know what constitutes the hostile act, you do not know what constitutes a violation of the ceasefire. In bilateral agreement, there is definition of terms to know what hostile act will constitute a violation,” he said.

The two peace panels will also tackle the Comprehensive Agreement on

Socioeconomic Reforms (CASER) in the third round of talks.

But he said they are not rushing on the signing of CASER because it is the most contentious among the agreements that will be signed by the GRP and NDFP. Described as the “heart and soul” of the peace negotiations, the CASER contains the most contentious issues such as agrarian reform, national industrialization, and foreign policy.

In a press release issued by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP) on Saturday, Bello expressed optimism that major breakthroughs will take place next week.

“We are prepared to sign side and other agreements while we are discussing contents and provisions of the major substantive agenda,” Bello.

He added that draft documents will be submitted on Monday to President Rodrigo Duterte.. The government panel will leave for Rome, Italy on Tuesday, he said.

Among these draft documents are the draft CASER, comprehensive agreement on political and constitutional reforms (CAPCR) and comprehensive agreement on end of hostilities and disposition of forces (EOHDOF).

“We are all set and ready to engage the NDF in the discussion of all substantive agenda including supplemental agreements needed to proceed and arrive at a peaceful negotiated political settlement to end the armed conflict in the country,” Bello said.

He emphasized that the GRP panel is doing all it can “in the spirit of true reconciliation and genuine quest for just and lasting peace.”

He said t the GRP panel is ready to sign side and other agreements while discussing contents and provisions of rhe major substantive agenda.

Bello explained that government is all set to sign a supplemental agreement on the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect of Human

Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) which will include an expanded role for the Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC).

“And we are challenging the NDF to formalize the unilateral ceasefire with a bilateral ceasefire agreement to give our communities and combatants a more secure environment for the peace process,” Bello added.

Davao-made mobile game wins multiple accolades

Young developers from renowned, locally-grown tech company, Ingenuity, received three accolades for their Tamagogo mobile game from the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP) at the GameOn! ICT Creatives Awards Night.

GDAP has been recognizing game developers since 2011. The organization rewards student and studio developers.

Ingenuity is one of the few participants who excelled in three categories: Best in Mobile/Handheld Games, Best in Game Art, and Best in Game Play.

Tamagogo is a casual stealth and strategy game with a one-touch control mechanism which makes it easier to navigate a simple plot: escape a terrain of moving hazards, including roving guards, while helping a monster (the game’s hero) rescue and hatch its

eggs. The app is available for download on iOS and Android.

Tamagogo took four months to develop and was created from scratch by game developer and designer Resa Embutin, 22, and Kevyn Montana, 24.

Embutin and Montana are both BS Information Technology graduates of the University of Mindanao and of the University of Immaculate Concepcion, respectively.

Tamagogo was intended to be a portfolio game, showcasing the team’s skills, but it soared beyond its purpose. “It is humbling to be acknowledged this way. We are fairly new to game development and we are excited and encouraged to explore more of what we can do,” says Kevyn.

Japan PM’s visit: a showcase of good tidings

ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews / 14 January) -- The recent official visit by Japan Prime Minister Shinzō Abe in itself provides a showcase of good tidings that can either overwhelm or far from impress the Filipino most critical of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Moreover, it can also have nuggets on culture and diplomacy.

The invitation to the President’s residence in his home city for breakfast was something the Japanese PM could not decline, with the latter looking at it as a privilege sans qualms on

cost of food and drinks.

Sincerity, dedication, and sheer honesty are highly important in Japanese culture.

And Duterte’s invitation to Japan’s head of state nailed the deeper understanding of Japanese culture. To Abe, everything that happened during that breakfast meeting--the house tour and mosquito net included--was a demonstration of total transparency, that comes vital in any business talk with the Yen. While we can look back at history as a “teacher” to remind us, ‘Hey, there were comfort women during World War II who had to suffer in various parts

of the country,’ we cannot hold hostage the presentday personalities for the atrocities done by those who came ahead of them. Beyond the healing by time, is the rebuilding of two nations that have sought to bury the hatchet and let peace fly.

Then we consider those descendants of these Japanese early visitors who opted to stay--some finding home in Mindanao. Few found themselves being asked by the press on how they feel about the linkages and all. The intermarriages between Japanese and Filipino citizens over decades have healed the cultural conflict.
