Smart names finalists of 13th SWEEP Awards TEN student-teams from six schools were recently named finalists to the country’s biggest technology competition, the SWEEP (Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program) Innovation and Excellence Awards.

Four teams from University of San Jose-Recoletos in Cebu made the cut, as well as two teams from Batangas State University.

Completing the SWEEP Awards Top 10 were groups from Ateneo de Manila University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, and Wesleyan University in Nueva Ecija.

SOCIAL media can be an effective tool for engaging with learners and communicating with parents. Teachers who model good social media use will grow learners who apply positive, respectful values in their interactions on social media platforms.

Engaging in ongoing discussions with fellow teachers can help when you unsure whether you should share, reuse or respond to content. Check whether the school division in your place has its own policy on social media use and always act in accordance with that policy. Be aware that once

shared, content posted on social media platforms can be re-shared by anyone.

Consider your past posts and the fact that people you don’t know may judge you based on how you are portrayed online.

Be aware that what you post may always be seen by other teachers, parents/ guardians and most especially by your students.

For instance, if you post childish stuff just for your friends to horse around you, be aware that your students are viewing your posts and may follow what you’re doing because you are supposed to be their role model. And lastly, acknowledge the source of any information if you want to repost them.

Enhancing the Computational Skills of Pupils Through MADS Flow Chart

Mastery of arithmetic operations involves learning on how to carry out calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ideas about numbers and number calculations can be applied to solve problems and special topics involving numbers (UNICEF, 2012). However, it was observed that pupils still have difficulties in the four basic operations even if they are already in the higher grades. It was further observed that pupils are master only on a particular operation if that is the lesson being taught

by the teacher. Letting the pupils do simple solving on the basic operations has been a majority problem of pupils inside the classroom.

There may be several factors for a pupil not to be able to master the four basic operations. If our pupils have not mastered the skills, it does not mean that they are not intelligent but rather because solving needs memory recall and writing numbers and symbols in their appropriate positions.

Based on the researcher’s obser vations and feedback from other teachers, some pupils have problems aligning numbers vertically, which affect written calcula-

tion that involves columns of numbers. Some pupils have no difficulty with addition and subtraction but have difficulty with multiplication and division. Some pupils have problems organizing numbers in space. Others don’t remember work patterns such as working from right to left in long division, and left to right with multidigit addition, subtraction and multiplication. Further, in most cases, pupils’ mastery in computation are noticeable only when the given are aligned by the teacher. That is why the researcher found it significant to use MADS Flow Chart (Elementary Mathematics

Lesson Guide G4, 2012), as drill and part of the enrichment activities, to enhance pupils’ mastery in the four basic operations and address pupils’ problems with alignment.

MADS (Multiplication, Addition, Division and Subtraction) Flow Chart is nothing more different than that of MDAS, but in here the pupils follow a flow chart in solving. The use of MADS Flow Chart is one way of maximizing pupils’ participation and learning, thus, resulting to a better understanding and longer retention of concepts and operational skills in mathematics.

Reflection on John Dewey’s Philosophy of Education

Democracy and social reform in education is a way of developing new ways to prove that education is the continuous process and it needs to adopt changes. Society is changing and there is a need to fit those changes for its individual. Its individual has its own specialized skills or knowledge.

The school therefore should not only focus on the subject matter but rather than the experiences or knowledge embodied to the learners.

Dewey’s educational theories argue that education and learning are social and interactive processes, and thus the school itself is a social institution through which social reform can and should take place. In addition, he believed that students thrive in an environment where they are

allowed to experience and interact with the curriculum, and all students should have the opportunity to take part in their own learning. he philosophy of John Dewey is that education is not only as a place to gain content knowledge, but also as a place to learn how to live. In his eyes, the purpose of education should not revolve around the acquisition of a predetermined set of skills, but rather the realization

of one’s full potential and the ability to use those skills for the greater good.

Dewey notes that “to prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities”. Education is the social reconstruction of its individual. When a child learns, he will be develop, and grows according to his potentials.

CAREER GUIDANCE MODULE: BOON FOR CAREER CHOICE

An action research at finding modular career guidance as an aid in career choice of the grade 10 students was conducted at Kitubo National High School. The instrument used to gather the data needed was personally designed by the researcher to address the relevant information’s needed. After having carefully processed, pertinent and relevant

informations were revealed: 1. Parents’ financial capacity or financial constraints with 85.57% approval is the highest internal factor considered by a student in choosing a career.

2. School offering and the proximity also mark the external factors in considering a career choice.

3. Thirty minutes is not enough in the conduct of the career guidance for the

startup founders, including SWEEP Awards alumnus Chino Atilano who is now CEO of TimeFree Innovations.

The mentors taught finalists the importance of knowing their market and checking out competitors, as well as how to guard against fraud.

The SWEEP Awards was launched in 2004 to provide college students with the platform to create innovative applications that solve consumer pain points. It is an initiative under SWEEP, a long-running collaboration between Smart and the academe which aims to raise the standards of engineering

seniors.

This research concludes that he career guidance module helped the students in choosing their career however they could not enroll according to their choice because of the economic status of their parents and of the tracks offered in

There is nothing therefore that the school can do as regards financial capacity. However, it can make interventions by offering other tracks like HUMMS and ABM if it is not possible to offer STEM.

DepEd holds second nat’l K to 12 Confab Pros and Cons of School OIC

As a teacher there are many things to be considered, first planning your lessons, second how to manage class, third how to deliver lessons effectively, fourth remediate those pupils who are in needs of remediation, and lastly un-ending paper works.

Being a teacher there are many pros and cons. Pros like the feeling you get when a kid chooses you as the one person they will open up to and let down their guard. The friendships you make with other staff. Some of my closest friends are those that I’ve met while teaching. You’ll share ideas about not only work-related issues but also every other part of your lives, as well. You’ll always get to enjoy your love of learning. If I’ve learned anything, it is that you are constantly learning and growing within the profession. Cons Students who won’t pass, no matter what you do. Sometimes you will pull out every trick that you know to get a student to complete their task. You’ll try to strike deals, be overly lenient, practically spoon-feed the answers—all to no avail.

You’ll spend nights wracking your brain wondering what you could have done differently to get through to this kid. Sometimes you just have to let it go. This can be one of the hardest parts about teaching— knowing that a kid with potential just won’t make it.

Teaching itself gives a teachers enjoyable yet challenging work. Being the school officer In-charge could also give you different pros and cons that

some teachers who are assigned as OIC give up and some especially who thinks opportunity in the future really enjoy to have this another ancillary work.

The Pros.

• The feeling that you were trained to become school head really paid off the effort. Attending Seminars like Crafting SIP, Formulate school plan and etcetera.

• One of the requirements (ways) to be promoted as school head. Or one of the requirements to take the principal exam.

• Giving you opportunity to lead and manage the school in absence of the school head.

• Leadership training ground.

The Cons.

• Additional working time that is not related in teaching.

• It requires more patient and leadership skills to manage teachers and school.

• You are not just doing your job as a teacher, you are also doing the same job of the school administrators.

Will you accept OICship?

Being a school OIC is something that you have to have a passion for. It is more than just a job; rather, it is who you are.

It can be both rewarding and frustrating. There will be times when you will wonder why you are doing this job, and there will be many more times you realize there is nothing else in the world you would rather do. It is a wondrous feeling to know you have the capacity to lead and manage.

Teachers as Molder of Youth

The concern of the teacher in school /classroom are the children.

Being a molder of youth teacher should be careful in all her ways because children are great imitator.

She is a part of the success and failure of a child, and should strive to be a good model. Children learned more from what they see and observed. It is not easy to become a molder if a teacher don’t have

passion to her profession.

A teacher needs the best ingredients which is the qualities of a good teacher in order to be successful in her job as molder of youth .

As great imitators, children can say everything a teacher do, good or bad influence them. Children don’t have enough knowledge to determine what is right and wrong. She plays a big role as molder of youth by being a model in the classroom

of the basic education: Kinder-Grade 6, Junior High School, and Senior High School.

In the break-out sessions, representatives from regions and divisions answered questions, such as, “In what ways have you been successful in implementing Multigrade/Madrasah/ Indigenous Peoples Education Program in your school/district/division/ region?”; “In what ways did you resolve issues on learning resources?”; and “In what ways have you been successful in establishing partnerships

with your local government unit?” These were answered with evidencebased presentations. An integral part of these sessions was the sharing of experiences of all participants.

The government is keen on revolutionizing the Philippine educational system, hence, the DepEd administered a shift to a fresh learning scheme in 2011. It aims to provide Filipino learners tools to transform society and consequently, become a more competitive and progressive Philippines.

anymore. Europe is also picking up. So I think it will probably be better,” Pernia added.

Meanwhile, the countr y’s total merchandise trade grew by 7.3 percent in November 2016 on the back of strong growth in imports.

The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that total trade grew to USD 12 billion in November 2016, with imports growing by 19.7 percent and mitigating the 7.5-percent drop in exports. “ The surge in trade transactions with East Asia and the ASEAN boosted the performance of imports, which also signals an increase in the purchasing power of Filipinos. We expect that this further increased in December 2016,” said Pernia.

Pernia further said the positive global growth outlook paired with the upcoming ASEAN integration is the perfect opportunity to expand the Philippines’ exports portfolio.

“We must continue to develop our infrastructure

and encourage product differentiation and quality upgrading to prepare our micro, small, and medium enterprises, for the upcoming increase in demand from our new trading partners,” he added. (PNA)
