AGAYAN DE ORO CITY – A suspected drug courier is now facing charges for alleged possession of illegal drugs estimated to be worth P500,000 after he was arrested by agents of the Phil. Drug Enforcement Agency-10 (PDEA-10) at the seaport in Barangay Macabalan, this city.

According to PDEA, the suspect, identified as Jan Erik Montejo, 29, of Barangay Patag here, yielded about 100 grams of illegal substances believed to be methamphetamine hydrochloride or “shabu” on Monday night.

PDEA-10 said its K9 unit was conducting surprise random check at the port where the suspect was caught.

Mindanao sultanates support peace efforts, federalism

NPA stages ‘lightning checkpoint’ in MisOr

AGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Around 50 communist rebels staged a “lightning checkpoint” along the Butuan-Cagayan de Oro national highway in Medina town, Misamis Oriental Tuesday morning, stopping all vehicles

to look for soldiers and policemen, the military said.

Capt. Peter Sarsagat, acting public affairs officer of the 4th Infantry Division, said the rebels captured no soldiers nor policemen.

He said two platoons

of the “Sandatahang Pangpropaganda” of the New People’s Army Guerilla Front 4B set up a checkpoint along the highway in Purok 4, Barangay Pahindong, Medina town.

“The checkpoint lasted for only 30 minutes. They wanted to show their forc-

He said the rebels also talked with Barangay Pahindong Chairman Roel Cabanos and even ate their breakfast at the basketball of the barangay hall.

Bukidnon folks silent on replacement of vice governor

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – There was no heated confrontation or even violent reaction from supporters as sitting Bukidnon Vice Gov. Rogelio Quiño was replaced by provincial board member Alex Calingasan as ordered by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday, a source at the Provincial Capitol said Friday.

The source, who requested anonymity since he was not authorized to issue an official

statement, said the transition of the province’s second highest elected government post was smooth and there was no movement from the either camps of Quiño and Calingasan.

“It was a quiet affair. There was no mass action, no protests,” the source told this reporter in a phone interview.

The source said Calingasan has already taken his oath of office administered by his son, Libona town mayor Leonardo

Genesis, on Feb. 21. He assumed office Feb. 22.

Even Gov. Jose Maria Zubiri Jr. did not issue a statement on the DILG’s order and even on Calingasan’s assumption into office. The provincial information office was silent, as well.

In a radio interview in Bukidnon, Calingasan has said he will support the administration of Zubiri.

It can be recalled that Zubiri and Calingasan are political allies although they had a falling out a few elections ago. Quiño, however, was Zubiri’s running

mate in the previous election.

The provincial office of the DILG, according to reports, served the dismissal from the Office of the Ombudsman on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The Ombudsman’s decision was based on the complaint filed against Quiño when he was the mayor of Manolo Fortich town for violation of a provision of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act when he and his budget officer Cecila Quiño-Rejas raised the salary grade of municipal shop foreman Antonio Quiño Jr. from

SG11 to SG18, increasing his salary of P765.13 to P1,157.90.

In an interview, DILG Provincial Director Bruce Colao said the ruling of the Ombudsman was issued on Sept. 26, 2016 was not implemented when Quiño obtained a temporary restraining order from the Court of Appeals last November.

The order finally came out when the TRO expired last month and the respondents’ petition for writ for preliminary injunction was denied by the CA.

The appeal was signed by 140 IFI delegates during the church’s convention held here Tuesday.

The reassurance of the President to the peace negotiations, Calang said, not only with the CPPNPA-NDF but also with the Bangsamoro and Cordillera people is “a positive spark that will keep our candle of hopes burning.”

IFI has been on the forefront to negotiate for the release of police officers and soldiers held captive by the New People’s Army (NPA) following the Maoist rebels’declaration of suspension of unilateral ceasefire.

from the IFI. “As peacemakers, we will continue to offer ourselves as among Third Party Facilitators working the way for a safe release of the same NPA captives,” Calang said.

He said there are “a hundred and one compelling reasons we can enumerate for the peace negotiations to move forward.”

That’s why, he added, “we do not want spoilers to jeopardize the gains of the 3 decade-old peace negotiations especially the substantive agenda agreed upon by both parties on the 3rd round of talks in Italy.”

Calang, who was one of the observers of the talks in Rome, Italy, said that despite the breakdown of the negotiations he is still optimistic that it will push through notwithstanding the hardships along the way.

-oooMIXED REACTIONS FLOOD SOCIAL MEDIA ON DE LIMA ARREST: Many mixed reactions are flooding media and social networking sites in the aftermath of the arrest and detention of Sen. Leila De Lima Friday, February 24, 2017, in connection with charges that she participated in the proliferation of illegal drugs inside the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa City at a time when she was justice secretary.

One group of reaction says De Lima is the subject of a ruthless persecution ordered by President Duterte no less, as a retaliatory action for her critical opposition to the President’s fierce, violent, and deadly campaign against illegal drugs.

Another typical reaction is that, De Lima deserves to be charged, arrested, and detained, even if she is a sitting

lawmaker, since the crimes with which she had been charged are grave and truly heinous in nature. Which of these reactions are correct? Which of them are wrong?

-ooo FILIPINOS ARE NOW SPEAKING MORE FREELY THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA: I, of course, wouldn’t dare to judge which reaction is correct, and which is wrong. As far as I am concerned, it is not the correctness or inappropriateness of the reactions that is material and important.

Poets as/ are gifted beings I WAS in a local coffee shop one afternoon to take my snacks. While waiting for my order-a cup of brewed coffee and a slice of chocolate cake-I busied myself reading a back issue of Poetry magazine, yes, that small literary magazine founded in 1912

by Harriet Monroe. It was Poetry’s April 2014 issue (Volume CCIV, Number I) which featured the works of Gabrielle Calvocoressi, Ishion Hutchinson and Sheryl Luna, among other poets.

I was reading Dorothea Lasky’s Lilac Field, which appeared on page 20, when a journalist-friend of mine apPoets as/are gifted beings peared from behind and said, “malingaw diay kag basa ana?”, adding “di jud ko gahanan anang poem.”

I answered him in the affirmative because I really enjoy reading poems, even as I also enjoy writing po-

encouraging, and is generating hope in me that with this new-found strength of the citizens to speak out on almost all issues in an uninhibited manner, officials who would otherwise be committing crimes under the thought that their dastardly deeds would be kept hidden would now think twice or thrice before indulging in any criminal act.

-ooo “SUB-JUDICE” RULE ON PENDING CASES NO LONGER EXISTS? On the other hand, there is something odd that struck me in the case of De Lima, and it is the propensity of lawyers of the contending parties to be talking to media about the merits and demerits of her cases. It is as if there is no such thing as the “sub judice” rule---which means that when a case is already being tried by the courts, parties and lawyers are banned from talking about it.

trial by publicity. It is in fact an attempt to uphold the majesty of the courts, to enable them to decide any factual or legal issue that had been laid before them on the basis merely of the evidence, and not on any public hysteria or reaction.

Listening to the lawyers in the case of De Lima gave me the impression that there is no more sub judice rule. I guess the Supreme Court would have to step into this controversy, and bar all further discussion of the senator’s cases---or any other case for that matter that is already pending in the court---henceforth.

Through poetry, universal human experiences are expressed in a condensed form, so short that the readers sometimes cannot get the message across by just one reading. And condensing these human experiences in a few lines is not as easy as eating a pie, as the proverbial saying goes. Colmenares Questions SSS Contribution Increase No increase in contribution without reforms in collection and investment efficiency

Bayan Muna Chairman Neri Colmenares today criticized SSS President Emmanuel Dooc for insisting on contribution increases even if no reforms to improve collection has yet been undertaken

by SSS. “Section 18 of RA 8282 or the SSS law requires presidential approval for any increase in contribution. Nowhere in the SSS Board Resolution and even in the Malacanang order approving pension increase can one find an approval of contribution increase and yet, SSS Pres. Dooc keeps on harping that it shall be imposed this May” said former congressman Neri Colmenares who was the principal author of the SSS pension increase in Congress.

“SSS has no ground to increase contributions when they

have not even undertaken reforms to increase collection, increase investment efficiency and other reform measures. During Congressional hearings on the bill, SSS has agreed that increase in collection will increase SSS fund life. If they first implement SSS reforms for one or two years, SSS will find out that with increased collection they may not even need to increase contribution.

Every January to February of the year the Department of Education implemented the Early Enrolment period and campaign to cater all school aged children in particular barangay or place to enroll, get the number pupils in every school in preparation for the next school year to open to get the need of additional classroom, classroom furniture and teachers. Calapaton Elementary school is a far flung school of kitaotao-1 District. This barangay comprises far setios and purok also. Problem like distance of home from school, bad weather and peace and order situation are often encountered by the children for them to absent or to drop out .

S chool year 20152016 pupils enrolment Calapaton ES decreases because of these common problems. SY 2016—2017 enrolment increased because of enrolment campaign made not only by

teachers but also with the help of PTA, Barangay Officials and NGO’s. House to house giving of flyers/ enrolment forms were made .Each teacher partner with kagawad assigned in that particular purok and parent together to get the number of enrolment targeted. For children who are not too far from school, they just come to school for the early enrolment.

Some parents give hesitation to teachers with regard to their children’ safety that need to be undertake especially the 5 years old kindergarten pupils. The teacher together with kagawad give some insights and the goal of the Department to have this early enrolment period for their children‘s education Early period enrolment and campaign helped the school to increase enrolment and encourage out of school youth to enroll again.

Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM) is A very helpful item for both students and teachers alike. This can help students cope up with the topics in which they find it hard such as Mathematic equations, theories in Science, Gerunds and Onomatopoeias in English and many more mind- boggling topics in our Schools. SIM’s are very helpful indeed, but it cannot be helpful if the teacher

will not take measures on helping the students. I think despite of all the different tools that can aid students to learn hard lessons, a teacher must take different kinds of risks, measures or sacrifices if necessary so that he or she may give the students the knowledge that would suffice them. SIMs are just secondary visual aids and learning materials, the teacher himself is the primary visual aids and

is the most reliable and most efficient resource in teaching.

Now on its ninth annum at Centrio in Cagayan de Oro City, Deconex 2017 has always been held in partnership with Holcim Cement.

assisting UAP members all year-round in their continuing education initiatives.

Ormita said the company is lucky to be part of the bigger Swiss-based LafargeHolcim. The parent company regularly sends in some of its technical experts to the Philippines to conduct professional lectures such as continuing education for professionals like architects, civil engineers, etc.

At Deconex 2017 which was held from February 23 to 26 this year, Holcim Philippines also held cement mixing demos at their booth for its Holcim WallRight and Hol-

There was also a product presentation on Saturday afternoon.

Ormita said that Holcim Philippines conducts safety trainings to its clients too throughout the year. Holcim Philippines North Central Mindanao which is based in Lugait, Misamis Oriental covers the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Camiguin and neighboring provinces.

THE Jesuit-run Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City has rallied its students for possible signature mobilization to pressure Congress to scuttle the death penalty bill currently being calendared in its two Houses.

Also, at least 15 professors and instructors from various departments in the university have committed to set aside a one-hour session to their classes and discuss the disadvantages of death penalty if it is reinstituted in the coun-

Nestor Banuag, Xavier University advocacy coordinator, said that the department which he heads, the Social Development Office, has formulated a one-hour module for the professors and instructors to guide them in their anti-death penalty lectures in these so-called “alternative classes”. Other wise, it is up for the lecturers to improvise.

On Tuesday alone, four Philosophy classes were lumped together at the spacious Xavier Univer-

sity Little Theater to hear a lecture by visiting Ateneo de Davao University law professor Romeo Cabarde.

He made this comment Friday in reaction to Senator Leila De Lima’s claim that she will be the first political detainee under the Duterte administration. Earlier in the day, De Lima turned herself in to authorities over one of three drug cases she is facing.

Discovering the Chapel of the Holy Relics

Working as a TRAVELPRENUER, I often get calls from people coming from different walks of life

to go to different places in the country or outside the country. Just this year I have received 3 calls from

clients wanting to go to the Chapel of the Holy Relics.

I normally gave instructions on how to get to the place, but I myself had not visited it. It is not at all uncommon to answer such inquiries with information I have researched, as opposed to personal experience.

After all, even travel agents have not been everywhere!

This was the situation until I myself was directed to go there due to the severe pain I felt after losing my baby.

Recently I gave birth to a baby with Patau Syndrome (a trisomy 13 abnormality which won't allow the baby to live more than a week).

On my road to recovery, I have been looking for a safe place to grieve, to cry my heart out. The burial of my one-day-old son, was followed by 3 sleepless nights. I tried my best to eat and drink my medicine as advised by friends, family and loved ones. I pray hard until my tears run dry, no more voice coming out to guide me and give my

strength.

I had been asking for intervention prayers from family and friends. And then one day I reached out to a very close friend and she shared me the place where she normally goes every week, and which I have heard from clients in

travel and tours recently as they also seek healing or thanksgiving of blessings received.

For 38 years in this world I have been to many churches, temples, mosques and places of worship. Yet this is the first time--just as we were about to enter the

main door of the church--I had goosebumps. I could feel the holiness as I walk through the Chapel of the Holy Relics wherein the more than a life size St. Rita of Casia, the Patron Saint of Impossible Requests can be found on the right side.

SM Prime’s net income rose 14 percent in 2016

M PRIME Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), the Philippines’ leading integrated property company, registered a recurring net income growth of 14% in 2016 to PHP23.8 billion from PHP20.9 billion last year.

Consolidated revenues grew 12% to PHP79.8 billion in 2016 from PHP71.5 billion in 2015. Overall operating income improved by 12% to PHP35.3 billion in 2016 from PHP31.4 billion the prior year. Growth was mostly driven by the continued expansion of its malls as well as the strong sales take-up of housing units.

Solons condemn railroading of death penalty bill

ACT Teachers Party-List Representatives Antonio Tinio and France Castro slammed the premature closing of the debates on the death penalty bill during yesterday’s plenary session.

“It is alarming that the House leadership chose to cut short the deliberations knowing that many solons lined up to express their legal and moral bases against death penalty,” said Tinio who was supposed to be next interpellator for House Bill 4727 just before the Majority Floor Leader moved to terminate the period of interpellation.

“This is a blatant disrespect to the long list of legislators who lined up to register their constituents’ views on the matter,” Tinio

remarked. “It is definitely unacceptable to railroad the passage of the death penalty bill because for burning issues such as this, congressional deliberations are not just for its members alone—they are also for the people. Due to the utmost seriousness of the proposal and the public nature of our sessions, Congress owes it to the Filipino people to conscientiously discuss the issue at hand.”

One of the many problems in school is bullying. Many students are victims of this not only in the vicinity of the campus, but also in the outside world. Due to this problem, many of the bullied students will resort to self- isolation, being an emo, suicide or they themselves will become bullies.

Many are alarmed due to this hysteria, schools are now taking preventive measures for this and even the government are alarmed by this. Now, the government is now forced to sanction students who are known to be bullying a student. Some are now

establishing a protective and strict measure and some private schools even have a surveillance vehicle roaming around the city and the campus in order to assure a safe bully- free environment.

For me, the most effective measure to stop bullying is having spiritual and psychological guidance to those who are bullied and to those who bully as well because study shows that most bullies are students who lack attention in class or at home. They must be given attention and let them feel that someone cares for them.

I was speechless as I entered the church with hu n d re d s of re l i c s of different saints which I myself may not be familiar of all or I may just heard from my grandfathers as those names was used by our ancestors from left to right and in front of the altar inside the chapel. You can see the reliquaries of Sto. Pio, St. Philomena, St. Lucy, and too many others to mention, categorized from 1st class to 3rd class relics depending on which part it came from. There is also an image of St. Rita lying prostate in the altar.

I reached out to the hand of St. Rita of Casia in the glass hole wherein I asked for an impossible favor. To make me feel the presence of the Holy Spirit and to guide me to the road of recovery and to relieve all the pain I felt, to take away my sadness, to take away the hurts, the pain, sorrows, anger and guide me back to be happy. PENRO urged to start livelihood for families in eco-tourism sites M ATI, Davao Oriental -Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) - Region 11 Regional Director Ruth M. Tawantawan has urged the Provincial E nv i r on m e n t a n d Natu r a l R e s o u r c e Office (PENRO) of Davao Oriental to introduce livelihood to the families living around eco-tourism sites in the province.

“The DENR employees should have entrepreneurial spirits and should think outside the box,” Tawantawan said.

Some of her ideas that can be introduced

for livelihood activities are snorkeling, boating and photo booth which may help locals in improving their living without jeopardizing the environment.

Tawantawan also challenged the personnel to work harder in its fight against illegal logging.

She said all employees of PENRO and its different Community Environment and Natu r a l R e s ou rc e s Office should work hand in hand, by all means, to stop illegal logging activities within the province.

“Let us re-mold and change ourselves, set as good examples for

others to follow,” she said.

Reportedly, there are many illegal logging activities in the province.

Tawantawan, PENR Officer Gregorio Lagura and all CENR Officers of Davao Oriental earlier met with Governor Nelson Dayanghirang to discuss its programs and projects for environment in the province.

Dayanghirang reportedly pledged to work with the Department in the pursuit of protecting and conser ving the natural resources of the province and to advocate the participation of youth in this endeavor.
