OS Angeles--A compact analogue of our inner solar system about 40 light years away has been discovered, the U.S. space station NASA announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

“The discovery gives us a hint that finding a second earth is not just a matter of if but when,” Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator of the Science Mission Directorate said.

By using powerful space telescopes and ground-based observatories, an international team of astronomers have discovered the first known system of actually seven Earth-size planets orbiting the nearby TRAPPIST-1, which is relatively close to us, in the constellation Aquarius.

“Around a nearby, cold, small star we found 7 rocky Earth-size planets, all of which could have liquid water -- key to life as we know it,” NASA posted on Twitter.

Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.

The discovery sets a new record for greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside our solar system, according to the NASA. “With the discovery, we have made a giant accelerated leap forward in the search for habitable worlds and life on other worlds,” Sara Seager, professor of Planetary Science and Physics, MIT, said. “Potentially because with not just one planet, but several,” she added.

The new results were published Wednesday in the journal Nature, and announced at a news briefing at the NASA Headquarters in Washington.

“The seven wonders of TRAPPIST-1 are the first Earth-size planets that have been found orbiting this kind of star,” said Michael Gillon, lead author of the

paper and the principal investigator of the TRAPPIST exoplanet survey at the University of Liege, Belgium.

TRAPPIST-1, classified as an small, ultra-cool dwarf, is the new hot topic in astronomy and the search for life outside our solar system. In contrast to our sun, the dwarf is so cool that liquid water could survive on planets orbiting very close to it, closer than is possible on planets in our solar system.

In May 2016, astronomers announced the discovery of three planets in the system, but even then they suspected there might be a few more.

Assisted by s e veral ground-based telescopes, including the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope confirmed the existence of two of these planets and discovered five additional ones, increasing the number of known planets in the system to seven.

Using Spitzer data, the research team precisely measured the sizes of the seven planets and developed first estimates of the masses of six of them, allowing their density to be estimated.

Based on their densities, all of the planets in the system are likely to be rocky.

“Looking for life elsewhere, this system is probably our best bet as of today,” Brice-Olivier Demory, professor at the University of Bern’s Center for Space and Habitability and one of the authors of the Nature paper, said in a statement.

But the handwriting on the wall about the American hand in the so-called “peaceful Filipino revolution” is quite plain and easy to see.

The evidence proving this US hand, like the book written by the US 13th Air Force, had been hidden under tight guard for so long, for obvious reasons, but truth, indeed, has a way of coming out.

“When placed side by side with events that led former President Marcos to suddenly call for the so-called ‘snap’ elections in 1985, and with other events which took place before then Lt. Gen. Fidel Ramos and then Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile supposedly broke-off with Marcos, the US book certainly conjures up images of the 1986 EDSA event as an American inspired or orchestrated rebellion, similar to its interventionist actions in other countries, solely to protect its interests.

-oooEDSA 1986: AMERICAN-MADE, NOT FILIPINO: “It would appear to me, therefore, that the concept of a `Filipino people power’ was a mere tactical strategy to make it appear that our people acted on their own to overthrow a corrupt and ruthless regime.

I keep watching everyday things that are happening around the archipelago by reading all information circulating specially in Mindanao.

From a distance, I see which place is having problem of peace and order, of food, of water, prices of gasoline, education and nearly everything under the sun. Sometimes, things make me glad while in some instances, I wished I had no information about anything ugly.

Assessing seriously the situation of the country, the number one problem is our leaders, I mean some of the politicians who try to outwit others to catapult them into the top.

Imagining things from the eyes of an eagle or hawk hovering in the air looking for food is not easy, but when concern is stronger than anything else, one will surely do what he thinks is right.

I have been in the journalism profession for more than 47 years, including those dark days of martial law and I guess I have some ways of knowing the

movements of things. Like a bumpy road, sometimes we smile and at times we hold our breath not for excitement but for fear of the consequence.

It is very regrettable but the truth is our people and government are distance away from each other.

Many of our politicians are not serious about the bad situation of many people except for their own benefits. For instance, elections have elapsed for more than nine months, but still the fighting rages. Instead of discussing the rising cost of oil and the repercussions that would surely ensue, some of them indulge in political skirmishes. Certainly they end up in a seemingly blank wall and nothing is done while millions of pesos were flowing down to pay them of salaries and wages, allowances and dozens of privileges.

That being the case, how can we possibly go up with some leaders in complete disarray, disunited and politicking everyday? I look at the country from the top of the clouds and naturally I have a better perspective of what really is happening and what should be done. We need unity. The people and government must stand on

one solid ground. They must help one another to arrive at a certain goal, To an old saying “in union there is strength” Definitely even in a family, the smallest group of people, when there is no unity, it can fall apart.

To summarize things, we must give importance to peace and order Without peace in the environment, we shall fall. The threats of communism and rebels are strong. Our soldiers are stronger, but without the cooperation of the general population, we cannot win.

Not only that, we shall all fall and in the short term, defeated by the enemies.

When that happens, our system of government will be communism where the property is vested in the possession of the government. All freedoms will be suppressed, including our belief in the Almighty God. Yes, churches will be closed and we work continuously from sunrise to sunset until we drop dead. We shall have no time for our family especially with our growing children who need our love and affection. Forever, we are slaves of an ideology that knows nothing except for its own interest. If we like that system, we can walk to our enemies with hands

down. Otherwise, we have to be united because it is only by doing so that we can have strength and win the whole war.

To hell to our enemies and if I had to say, I would let them dive to the kingdom of satan and enjoy eating flames. Or I better be in my grave if I cannot do anything to reverse a bitter situation. For many of us, life is short and we must move to make it more enjoyable and comfortable.

Being dormant on top of our unsolved problems is admitting a defeat before we can resist. Absolutely, it should not be the case.

If passed, groups to question constitutionality of death penalty

Anti-death penalty advocates aren’t giving up easily if the controversial measure gets passed into law.

Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary of the CB CP C ommission on Prison Pastoral Care, on Monday said the Supreme Court will surely be their next battle ground.

“We will go to the Supreme Court. We will exhaust all these legal means available because we believe that it is unconstitutional.

It is cruel. It is inhumane,” said Diamante during the

Tapatan media forum at Aristocrat Restaurant in Manila.

Along with other prison rights groups, he said, studies are now being conducted in order to build a strong case against the capital punishment.

He said they are considering at least two options on how to challenge the death penalty before SC— either through a death-row convict or through lawmakers who ratified the country’s international treaty obligation against it.

According to him, filing through lawmakers may be more practical since they can easily invoke the

violation of the country’s commitment to the United Nations’ International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

“The argument could be since the country has already signed the treaty, a senator can easily claim that he/she is affected since he/ she was among those that ratified it. Therefore, they can file a case before the SC,” explained Diamante.

On the other hand, antideath penalty advocates can also wait for the “test case” involving a death row convict.

“So that the case won’t be dismissed, there has to be a victim. In that sense,

we can do it when a person convicted and penalized with death penalty files a case to the SC and say that it is unconstitutional,” Diamante said.

Aside from the High Court, he revealed that another plan is bringing the issue to the international community since the Philippines signed the ICCPR. “We are seeking the opinion of the international community. The Philippines cannot simply withdraw unilaterally. It has repercussions. And the international community is very active in making pronouncements,” he added.

I: Signal to Start President Rodrigo R. Duterte finally ordered the much-awaited release of the names of the 21 members of the New BTC (Bangsamoro Transition Commission) last February 9 – three months and two days after he issued on November 7, 2016 of Executive Order No. 08, s. 2016 that reconstituted the BTC under the Aquino III administration.

(MindaNews and OPAPP Website, 2/10/17) The GPH and MILF implementing panels will launch the New BTC in Davao City in “the last weekend of February” (the launch has been scheduled for February 24 in Davao City – ed) giving the body four months and three weeks to re-draft the BBL (Bangsamoro Basic Law) into the BEL (Bangsamoro Enabling Law). Set for submission to the 17th Congress in July 2017, the President must have the draft when he delivers his second State of the Nation Address on July 24.

MindaNews and OPAPP quoted Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza stating that the release of the appointment papers “will signal the start of the work to come up with an inclusive Bangsamoro law that will truly reflect and address the clamor for a genuine political autonomy for the Bangsamoro people in Mindanao.”

The “clamor” refers to the political settlement emb o die d in t he FAB (Framework Agreement on Bangsamoro) and its four Annexes that were consolidated into the CAB (Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro) together with other key agreements signed during the 17-year negotiation

(1997-2014) of the Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

BBL or BEL has to be CABcompliant.

The “work to come up with an inclusive Bangsamoro law” refers to “convergence”, a process of consolidating with the CAB the GRP-MNLF 1996 Final Peace Agreement, R.A. No.9054 and the Indigenous People’s Rights Act of 1995 as mandated in Duterte’s Bangsamoro Peace and Development Roadmap (BPDR).

Can the New BTC accomplish its task in four months and three weeks starting March including time for organizing?

Plus Factors There are favorable circumstances that can be of much help to the New BTC. C ap a b l e Ne w B T C members: The New BTC members must have been chosen for their capability, professionalism and dedication. Six of the eleven MILF members are carry-overs from the first BTC. The five others and all the ten Government appointees are new but they are most dedicated to the Moro and the Minority Cause and they know well the Problem and its roots. All the Moro members must have been active participants in the Moro liberation movement since the 1960’s.

To offset the time-constraint, MILF Panel Chair Mohagher Iqbal, still BTC member but no longer its chair, told MindaNews (MN 2/10/17: GPH, MILF peace panels set date for BTC launch but who will take oath?) that the New BTC can have “twice monthly sessions with the rest of the month spent on consultations and committee meetings”; or “they can meet every day if necessary.”

Existing working drafts:

It took more than a year for the first BTC to finish Draft BBL. However, it was under an odd situation. Only one Annex was finished when it started drafting. The other three Annexes came in slow sequence and it had to wait for the signing of the CAB to wrap up its work.

This New BTC is not starting from scratch, Iqbal said “there are existing drafts that can be made as the working draft to hasten the process of the final drafting” that, being already CAB-compliant, will be in line with the desire of MILF chair Al Haj Murad Ebrahim. (MN 2/10/17: GPH, MILF …)

As we see it, the New BTC’s work can be clearcut if not simple: First, restore Draft BBL as closely as possible to the original copy — that which has the imprimatur of President Aquino III and Chairman Murad — by reconciling the 40 percent or so deletion, revision and substitution done by the House and the Senate of the 16th Congress with the provisions the MILF study group had petitioned the two Houses to be restored.

The Supreme Court’s November 20, 2016 decision of the petitions against the CAB and the FAB will be most helpful.

Second, examine what provisions of the 1996 FPA, R.A. No. 9054 and IPRA had already been converged with the CAB in Draft BBL. Determine what more are to be converged.

Third, add new provisions derived from public consultations and committee meetings.

Draft BBL had been vetted — it can be safely said — thoroughly for its constitutionality, legality and CAB-compliance for four months by the Office of the President and the GPH-MILF negotiating

panels with the assistance of the Secretary of Justice, the Solicitor General and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel (the last two now members of the Supreme Court). It can be assured that with its six lawyermembers, the New BTC can easily safeguard the constitutionality, legality and CAB-compliance in the ensuing BEL. On these grounds, Secretary Dureza is right in foreseeing that the New BTC will “come up with an inclusive Bangsamoro law that will truly reflect and address the clamor for a genuine political autonomy for the Bangsamoro people in Mindanao”.

Yet, right can go wrong.

If the New BTC is the only body that will write the Bangsamoro basic law and the BEL that it will craft is the only bill to be submitted to the Congress, all will be well as assured by Secretary Dureza. But this is not so.

Old pastoral letter cites ‘death squad’ existence in Davao

While Malacañang denied there’s such a “death squad” in Davao city, a church document issued more than 15 years ago cited the existence of the group that carried out secret killings of suspected criminals.

As early as November 2001, the Archdiocese of Davao wrote a pastoral letter,“Thou Shall Not Kill,” in expressing alarm over the spate of extrajudicial killings in the city.

Although it stopped short of linking President Rodrigo Duterte to such killings while mayor of Davao City, the letter deplored his supposed tolerance on “criminal groups like the Davao Death Squad to kill”.

“It is an admission of failure in the fulfilment of its obligation to prevent crime and its recurrence,” part of the statement, signed by then Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla, read.

Duterte has repeatedly denied his involvement in any summary killings as Davao mayor and claimed that the term Davao Death Squad or DDS was only invented by his local political rivals.

Solons condemn railroading of death penalty bill

ACT Teachers Party-List Representatives Antonio Tinio and France Castro slammed the premature closing of the debates on the death penalty bill during yesterday’s plenary session.

“It is alarming that the House leadership chose to cut short the deliberations knowing that many solons lined up to express their legal and moral bases against death penalty,” said Tinio who was supposed to be next interpellator for House Bill 4727 just before the Majority Floor Leader moved to terminate the period of interpellation.

“This is a blatant disrespect to the long list of legislators who lined up to register their constituents’ views on the matter,” Tinio remarked. “It is definitely unacceptable to railroad the passage of the death penalty bill because for burning issues such as this, congressional deliberations are not just for its members alone—they are also for the people. Due to the utmost seriousness of the proposal and the public nature of our sessions, Congress owes it to the Filipino people to conscientiously discuss the issue at hand.”

“This railroading reveals that they are willing to bend their own rules just to stifle the important debate. We were about to demonstrate why the proposal violates not just international law but our very own Constitution, and why it is anti-poor, historically a tool of state repression, prone to abuse and definitely not an effective deterrent to criminality. It was disappointing for me, as a neophyte legislator, to witness democracy as the first in line on this administration’s death row,” Castro stressed.

There’s a student making noises, another poking he child in the next seat and a few others distracted with unrelated tasks or staring off into space .And then there’s that seemingly interested child who ask question that somehow gets you off track, heading in an entirely different direction from the one you had planned.

Let’s not forget the students who can’t focus because they are hungry, didn’t get enough sleep, or are fuming over a nasty encounter they had on the way to your class. There are few kids who love the topic but need something to do with their hands or their bodies to stay attentive and some who just can’t sit still for one minute. Add in the students who gave up before they even walked into your class and the ones easily provoked to arguments, defiance, outburst, or violence, and I suspect that you’re struggling to accomplish any of the instructional goals you’ve set, but also going home at the end of the day feeling frustrate, angry and a bit defeated.

Dr. Jean Lindo, an environmental activist from Panalipdan-Mindanao, said they are willing to take to the streets if the CA rejects Lopez’s appointment.

She claimed the mining industry is “unsustainable” because the Philippines benefits so little from the gains of the mining corporations.

“This is the kind of business that has an unsustainable production, distribution, and consumption.

Lopez has a deep understanding about the mining issue. We support Secretary Gina Lopez. We are calling on the public to exert pressure to support Lopez,” Lindo said.

She said that the government is capable of finding alternative jobs for the industry workers who stand to lose their jobs.

“Let’s give her a chance to prove herself. There are not better options than mining that are friendlier to people,” she said.

Leo Fuentes Jr., regional coordinator of Magsasaka at Siyentipiko Para sa Pagunlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG), highlighted the agriculture’s role in providing potential jobs for workers who may be displaced.

“Before mining companies came to mine the communities, people used to be in farming. Agriculture can provide alternative jobs,” he said.

said mining operations even caused poor communities to become poorer.

“The mining industry in our country did not benefit the Filipino people but only the large and foreign firms who abuse our environment and its minerals. Poverty is a result of destruction of natural resources,” she said.

Homegrown artist Joey Ayala also countered the stand of the mining players that they operate within the bounds of Republic Act 7942, otherwise known as the “Philippines Mining Act of 1995,” by saying that it does not mean that even if they follow the law, the law itself is “right.”

“The process of making laws are subject to a lot of hearing lobbying, and vested interest. Respect it but do not praise it. You should learn to question the law because not all legal things are right…. We have to look at our laws. A lot of our laws were passed because people have vested interest. We are praising laws so much.

children who were legally declared as readily available for adoption by the courts. Currently, these children are under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The green group refuted the claims of the mining industry about the loss of at least 1.2 million jobs saying most of the mine workers are low-paying contractual , employed only for 3-6 months a year and work under hazardous working condition.

Caraga Watch cited a report by militant labor group Kilusang Mayo Uno which disclosed for ever 8 mine workers, only one is regular while the rest are contractual workers.

But Lopez said foreign investors should not be worried if their businesses do not cause environmental degradation and suffering in areas they operate.

“If they invest and rape the country, I prefer that they go away,” Lopez said.

She added: “We want investments that will help us, like investments in our biodiversity, investments which will pay our people well. We welcome investments in area development where they can make money, but they are helping everybody else improve also.”

As for mining, Lopez said studies have shown that 82 percent of the net revenue goes to the investor and 95 percent of which goes out of local economy.

This is despite the fact that mining activities leave massive and long-lasting damage to the environment and communities, she added.

Last Tuesday, Lopez announced that 75 mineral production sharing agreements or MPSAs for mining sites within or near watersheds face cancellation.

She said that if the government allows mining in a watershed area, rehabilitating it will be almost impossible.
