CPP-NPA to suffer setback delisting as ‘terror group’

LOS ANGELES, California — Efforts to have the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) delisted as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) and to have Prof. Jose Ma. Sison’s name stricken out from the terrorist watch list are expected to suffer a setback with President Rodrigo Duterte’s announcement in Cagayan de Oro Sunday night that he was classifying them as a “terrorist group.”

Last week, US State Department acting spokesperson Mark Toner said the CPP-NPA still remains on the list of FTOs. The CPP-NPA was designated an FTO on August 9, 2002.

The dictionary (Google) definition of urban is simply “a term pertaining to a city or town”. The word is frequently used to distinguish urban from rural. This definition is oversimplified for there are deeper nuances of being an urban than how it is defined.

The urban areas or cities can be considered as places of refuge and opportunity.

However, they can also be considered as places where dysfunctional and social problems are rampant.

In the earlier years, urban areas are considered economically dynamic, attracting agricultural workers from the rural area with its’ promised of better schools, more workings opportunities and high paying jobs. However, due to the large number of rural

The parents play an important role in educating the children because as the saying goes, “Education starts at home”. As a mother starts conceiving her baby in the womb education already takes place.

The parents are the child’s first teacher. The role of the school is to enhance what is already inculcated in their hearts and minds and to train them how to use the skills in the near future. Definitely, the school needs the parents to make this change happens.

In school the teachers and parents work hand-in-hand to nurture the future leaders.

Teachers cannot do it alone. We need the help of the parents to provide the children the quality training and skills they need as they move forward to the next stage of their life.

Some parents nowadays entrusted everything to the teacher. Reasons like being busy looking for means of livelihood, nobody would take care of other siblings or whatsoever are the common alibis they give to excuse themselves from the responsibility of not only sending their child to school and putting all the blames to the teacher to whatever happens but the responsibility of guiding them to achieve their

dreams in life. This is the real scenario and the common problems the school is facing at present. Lack of parent’s follow-up to the kids resulting to the involvement of the latter to juvenile delinquency.

To make a change, the parents must do their responsibility together with the teacher in gearing the child’s journey to a better tomorrow. The kind of citizenry our country will have in the next decades depend on the kind of family each child belongs and the kind of training and skills development given to them by the people who cared for their future, the teachers and the parents.

If we try to have a look

at what is happening today, some or majority of the youth involved in juvenile delinquencies are from troubled families. Doing such thing is their only means to be recognized by the people who brought them into this world.

In the classrooms children who are attention-seekers are children who receive less attention by their parents.

Generally, the parents are the first agents of change.

The children’s personality reflects the kind of training they receive at home. Nevertheless, the kind of citizenry the country will have in the years to come depends on the kind of family a community has.

Children who experience traumatic event might exhibit symptoms of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). migrants flocking to the cities, urban areas were likewise associated with the numerous problems of overpopulation, crime, and poverty. Such negativity also affected the state of schooling of some students in the cities.

More affluent residents of the city enrol their children at big colleges and universities but the marginalized populace would settle for public education where it is free. Though some Upper Middle Class and Middle Class opted for the public education, majority of the studentry is from the Lower echelon of society.

Considering that education nowadays is the most important aspect in societal development, it therefore plays a vital role in the success of society as a whole. As for students, they need to have good skills and proactive set of mind. However,

These ultimately will lead to student to stop schooling if the family finances cannot cope with these monetary demands.

Further, presence of diversions to learning are also rampant in the cities – malls, cinemas, video k rooms, gaming establishments, drinking salons – ALL considered threats to learning.

Education is proving to be an effective instrument in raising self-belief, forethought, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. The learner must try to attain the best education for him and not make the learning environment as one of the factors that act as barrier to success.

One of the major accomplishments of the government in addressing VAW is the passage of Republic Act No. 9262, otherwise known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004. The Act was signed into law during the celebration of “International Women’s Day” in March 8, 2004. It penalizes all forms of abuse and violence within the family and intimate relationships. GRP chief negotiator Silvestre Bello III said there is basis for the US to remove the CPP-NPA from the list since its political umbrella, the NDF, is now involved in peace negotiations with the Philippine government.

If the delisting happens, Bello said Sison can join the panels in succeeding talks anywhere outside Europe.

The OPAPP press release said the inclusion of the CPP-NPA in the US terrorist list has become a stumbling block for the return of Sison to the Philippines since the US, through its control of the International Police (Interpol), “can always effect the arrest of Sison outside of EU which is protective of the rights of people seeking political asylum in its member countries.”

“Bello said with a new US president in Donald Trump, it is possible Sison could be stricken from the list of personalities considered by the American government as terrorists,” the OPAPP press release said.

On Sunday night, Duterte told reporters in Cagayan de Oro City that he now considers Sison, his professor in Political Thought in college, to consider “a terrorist.”

Veterans Bank sees 2017 as ‘banner year’

Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) expects a significant expansion in bottom line this year, citing a ‘vigorous’ spike in loans and deposits to usher in a ‘banner’ year.

“Banner in the sense that I think we’re going to now have a profitable income statement. Banner in a sense that that will be achieved because of a vigorous spike in our portfolio as well as a vigorous entry of even larger deposits to the bank and expansion of our various products,” PVB Chairman Roberto F. de Ocampo told reporters on the sidelines of a press

conference in Quezon City.

Owned by World War II veterans, their widows and heirs, the private commercial bank posted P320 million in consolidated net income in 2014, up 280 percent from the P84 million in 2013.

The bank did not release its 2015 financial statement, and its 2016 results have yet to be finalized.

Refurbished city gym hosts ABL games DAVAO CITY- The newly-refurbished Davao City Recreation Center (Almendras Gym) hosted the first of two Asean Basketball League games played in Davao City.

The gym was packed to the rafters for the between Alab Pilipinas and Saigon Heat from Vietnam. The Vietnamese team reinforced by four imports won the game over the Alab Pilipinas, 72-65.

Mikey Aportadera, officer-in-charge of the Davao City Sports Development Division- City Mayor’s Office said the gym was rehabilitated to FIBA and ABL standards.

But the measure has not been passed by the municipal council and remains pending, he said.

With the farm gate price of P90 per kilo, the value of the damage has reached P124,507,440, said MDRRMO head Roberto Bagong.

He said it affected some 4,944 dish cages owned by 464 operators in Barangays Poblacion, Takonel and Bacdulong.

Bagong said the three affected barangays have already declared a state of calamity as a result of the fish kill.

He said Mayor Fungan and the municipal council is scheduled to meet Monday to discuss the proposed

calamity declaration for the entire municipality.

Fishery officials blamed the latest fish kill to “kamahong,” a phenomenon that is mainly caused by the sudden rise in the water’s temperature.

“Kamahong,” which usually occurs during the rainy season, triggers the rise of sulfuric acid in the lake’s waters that eventually cause the massive fish kill.

Last year, the municipal government of Lake Sebu recorded at least eight fish kills that destroyed around P1.4 million worth of tilapia. The last major fish kill in the area was in 2014.
