Money politics: tiring but addicted

IF we are asked, what makes people in any country get easily tired? The answer must be political discussion. The bigger the scale of political topic we discuss, the more complicated we think of. In education, topic presented by any teacher in the classroom should be started by curiosity. Therefore, the best teacher is whoever can raise anybody’s curiosity. But, what is about the topic of politics? Of course, it is tiring and finally boring. Yet, the discussion can still continue and even make us forget the time that has passed by. The people especially the bigots from different candidates of, say presidential candidates, are the most tired when watching the TV debates. When the time is approaching the due date of general election, the situation is calm and so quiet. But, actually it is like the magma under the mountain. It is getting hotter and hotter inside, making the forehead painful for sometimes. And, that is the time of being full of suspicion and prejudices. By the same condition, in that situation, the people are busy with their jobs and spending most of the time for working to get a living for the family. This is the “best time” of implementing money politics. Money can talk so much during this period. Money can drive

In order that the people in general understand the worst impact of money politics, it is good to look back the research result related to the worst impact of money politics. In 2006, I joined an international conference in Selangor, Malaysia, held in Subang Fila, exactly on October 25-26, 2006. One of the speakers presented a paper based on a research. It was found that there are about 14 factors affecting the leaders to be hurdled in developing their nation. However, the top three factors are such as lack of infrastructures, money politics, and the leadership being lack of trust from the people. They are mostly prosperous because they can work with high efficiency using the infrastructures they have in their country. Unfortunately, money politics and the leaders without trust from the people seem to be the most difficult to erase. People tend to get addicted everywhere. That is tiring when discussing money and politics. The two factors—money politics and leaders with no trust from the society—are interrelated. If the leaders are elected because of money politics, they will be bogged down in their government administration. They have to pay the deed: their debt of gratitude. They feel bogged down, as if their left foot and right one were stepping on different lines of the goals. One step follows the money backers and the other step follows their own vision and mission to make the nation prosperous. This is a dilemma made by their short, conscious, and logical thinking: as long as to be appointed. In the situation above, the government (the leader) can lose his trust from the people. The open high school program was actually conceived by DepEd because we all know that it is an inalienable right of every kid to receive education which will enable him/ her to become a productive citizen once the child grows up. The Constitution, recognizing this right, explicitly mandates that each individual regardless of

age must enjoy access to quality and relevant basic education. Thus, we see enrollees even as old as 40 who are enrolled in the open high school program because they have dreams to one day graduate from high school and be literate. This is especially emphasized more in Senior High when students who choose the vocational track are taught highly technical subjects such as aquaculture, artificial insemination, etc. These subjects were never introduced prior to the K to 12 implementation. But even this early, our students in the countr y have shown promise that we can compete with other students from scien-

tifically-inclined thinking countries such as Switzerland and Iran. For instance, the Regional Science High School in Cagayan de Oro City topped the SY 2014-15 NAT rankings, beating even the elite private schools in the metropolis. Recently, a sixth grader from Liceo de Cagayan University beat other students from the Asia Pacific, including the United States, in a math wizardry competition in Hong Kong. These inspiring tales only prove that we our students will ultimately become competitive as manpower resources in the future in this global economy.

The Department of Health in cooperation with the Department of Education launched National Deworming Day last January 27, 2016 as part of the campaign to fight off soiltransmitted Helminthiasis and Schistosomiasis among schoolchildren. It also aims to improve the overall nutritional status, cognitive development and quality of life of the school clienteles throughout the country. SCES pupils bid goodbye to bulate by actively joining the previously mentioned activity. Day before the deworming, they received consent form to be signed by their parents if they really permitted their children to take Albendazole or Medendazole – a drug that prevents and treats infection which is caused by nematodes from the soil. The launched started with a short program held in the school-covered court. The school Principal Vicente F. Garciano, DOH representa-

tive, faculty, pupils and parents attended it. The district nurse Roumelia M. Monredondo and the DOH representative inculcated the audience about the importance of deworming. They stressed to the parents not to believe any misguided information about deworming medicine for just like any other medication, deworming drugs may lead to nominal side effects like headache, nausea and vomiting, and these are only transient reactions and need not to worry. The teacheradviser properly guided the pupils during the hand-washing phase. Feeding of palatable yet nutritious foods followed with the full support of the parents. After pupils thoroughly finished tooth brushing in the dental trough, they received deworming medicine upon showing to the teacheradviser the signed parent consent form. Pangarap turns 17, raises hope for Philippine Eagle population PANGAR AP, Ab oitizPower’s adopted female Philippine Eagle, turned 17 years old last February 23. Captive-bred through natural pairing, Pangarap is one of the 35 Philippine Eagles under the care of the Philippine Eagle Foundation’s conservation breeding program. AboitizPower has been supporting the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) since 2010 by providing funds for Pangarap’s food, veterinary care, and shelter maintenance. “With the Philippine eagle as our flagship for conservation, taking direct actions to protect the species is integral in conserving our natural resources. With AboitizPower’s continued support to our captive breeding program, we are working doubly hard in our efforts to conserve the species,” said PEF executive director Dennis Salvador. To bolster the dwindling population of the species, the PEF has been working on Pangarap to produce its first offspring through cooperative artificial insemination (CAI). “Now that Pangarap has fully bonded with her

He also noted the bidding process for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the 15-MW Siguil run-of-river hydro power project had started already in Maasim, Sarangani. It plans to fund the project, with 70 percent from loans and 30 percent from the firm. He further said the company is planning to put up a solar farm in General Santos, noting that Alsons have a huge land in the area.

It is estimated to have a capacity of 25 MWs and will cost USD45-50 million. The manager also said the projects were designed to continue with or without the feed-in-tariff allowance (FiT all), which is a subsidy for RE power plants. CORN farmers in the country are urging the government to immediately resolve the rules governing the use and propagation of genetically modified (GM) seeds in local farms as they prepare for the April and May cropping season. The livelihood of some one million corn farmers are on the brink if the new rules through a joint circular being drafted by the Departments of Agriculture (DA), Science and Technology (DOST), Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Health (DOH), and Interior and Local Government (DILG), is not immediately passed.

“We worried that we might not be able to plant in May. This is our livelihood,” said Romualdo Elvira Jr. in Tagalog, a farmer from the northern province of Bicol. Around 70 percent of the Philippines’ corn output, which stood at 7.5 million tons last year, is GM. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) development and promotion remained high in the unit’s agenda, resulting in PhP 434-million of domestic sales generated; 1,106 MSMEs assisted (vs. 950 target or 116% actual); 33 SSFs were established (vs. 28 target or 118% actual); 8,260 jobs generated (vs. 8,252 target), and 24 MSMEs availed of loans (vs. 11 target, or 218% actual). In addition, the Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center was established and operationalized in the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) fulfilling the need for a research and development facility to catalyze industry development in the processed food sector. On top of all these, the provincial office also generated PhP 1.3-million in additional support from external support to strengthen and leverage its partnerships with government agencies, private organizations and other development partners. Consumer welfare and development also got an equal share of attention in 2015, with the office resolving 100% of all consumer complaints filed within the prescribed time (vs. 78% target, or 128% actual). A total of 921 firms were monitored (vs. 885 target, or 104% actual) and 100% of all firms with violations were penalized within the prescribed time in the decision. To further intensify consumer advocacy and fair trade law enforcement, the provincial office partnered with relevant private and government agencies. Seventeen government and private organizations took part in consumer-oriented activities; 36 consumer forums conducted with a total of 2,917 participants. No wonder, perhaps, that DTI Misamis Oriental garnered a 99.61% Client Satisfactory Rating (vs. a target of 90%) for 2015. Despite attaining laurels in the national stage and meeting all its targets for the year, this has not precluded the top performing unit from setting

the bar high for 2016. “This year, we intend to further improve on our delivery of services to SME’s,” Dir. Pabillore said. “We are now introducing a ladderized training module for our SME training sessions. Under this system, an SME wishing to enroll will first be assessed, and then advised on where best to start in the ladderized modules. With this, the office hopes to further improve the competencies and efficiencies of SMEs in Misamis Oriental. DTI Misamis Oriental also has plans to put in place a comprehensive database for its Cagayan de Oro Negosyo Center which will be shared with all the other negosyo centers in the province. “With the database in place, we can better serve our clientele and further improve our delivery of services,” Dir. He said he will endure more serious trainings to get his second Palarong Pambansa gold medal. “I am very determined now. I will give my best to win again,” he said. Datu Salih has been a taekwondo athlete for more than three years now. After days of sports competitions among student-athletes in the region, the ARMMwide meet wrapped up on Wednesday, February 24, with the divisions of Maguindanao II and Maguindanao I emerging as over-all champions in elementary and secondary school levels, respectively. Maguindanao II, the elementary level champion, garnered 26 gold medals, and was followed by Maguindanao I with 20 gold medals and Tawi-Tawi with 12 gold medals. In the secondary level, Maguindanao I earned 43 gold medals, followed by Maguindanao II with 28 gold medals and Lamitan City with 21 gold medals. More than 5,000 promising athletes competed against each other in sports like basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis, sepak takraw, athletics, boxing, wushu, arnis, wrestling, taekwondo, swimming and archery. The meet harnessed the theme ‘One Team, One Dream for the Bangsamoro People.’ In the 2015 Palarong Pambansa, the region finished 14th place -- two notches higher from its rank in the annual games in 2014. The ARMM delegates bagged a total of 10 medals in the regular sports and three medals in the demonstration games. The region’s taekwondo team grabbed two gold medals, two silvers and five bronzes while the athletics team bagged another gold medal. Buaron said Cagayan de Oro City’s Regional Science High School emerged third best in collaborative publishing (Filipino category) while Oroquieta City-based Misamis Occidental National High School secured the seventh and last spot in radio broadcasting (Filipino category). The seven-member MONHS radio broadcasting team was fourth in infomercial and sixth in technical application while the script of the elementary-level radio broadcasting team (English category) also of Oroquieta was declared third best and the anchor was seventh best. Meanwhile, in individual competitions, Kalilangan National High School of Bukidnon reaped the highest recognition for the region when Remuel de la Cruz topped editorial cartooning in Filipino. Most productive was Camiguin’s Yumbing National High School with three winners; Earl Joy Lopina in news writing (2nd place, English), Trisha Mae Lopina in editorial writing (7th place, Filipino) and Jay Ragas in editorial cartooning (7th place, English). Incidentally, Trisha Mae Lopina was a second-placer for sports writing (Filipino) in the 2012 NSPC that was held in Ormoc City--when she was first-year (Grade 7)--and one of this year’s outstanding journalist awardees in secondary level. Among contest events, science and health/technology contest, which is now on its third year, has the most winners for Region 10 with four, namely; Desiree Kler Pojas of Vicente N. Chavez Memorial Central School, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental (2nd place, English), Hannah Chrizeal Boyras of Salay National High School (3rd place, Filipino), Honeylou Sabal of Mimbunga National High School of Gingoog City (5th, Filipino), and Princess Kristel Carreon from Bulua Central School in Cagayan de Oro (7th place, Filipino). Ozamiz City Central School’s Juliana Fiel also won fourth place in newswriting in Filipino category. Buaron said the NSPC, which was held here for the third time, was participated in by more than 4,000 delegates from the country’s 18 regions and competed in eight individual and two group contest categories. Only seven of 54 contestants in every category were declared winners. This year’s theme, where contest topics were based, is “The Role of 21st Campus Journalists in Upholding Good Governance, Leadership and Transparency.”
