DSWD eyes comprehensive approach to needs of IPs DAVAO CITY –- The Department of Social Welfare and Development Office (DSWD) is eyeing a comprehensive approach to address the needs the Indigenous Peoples (IP) and other residents of hardto-reach areas in Davao after the reported deaths

of 28 former “bakwits” (evacuees) due to various diseases. DSWD Undersecretary for Mindanao Mae Fe Templa said the disease outbreak worried the IPs, thus, there is need for quick medical response and comprehensive approach to help the

communities. Life in the city has taken toll on the health of the indigenous people, who have long stayed in Haran in Davao City after the confirmed deaths of 28 Manobos including 18 children due to water-borne diseases.

Although a second confirmatory test is still ongoing to determine the disease afflicting the IPs, Dr. Ruth Gamboa of the University of the Philippines (UP) said the medical cases were recorded in 14 sitios along the Talaingod Range in Talaingod town, Davao del
