Bomb scare shakes Iligan AFTER GRENADE BLAST

AGAYAN de Oro City--Bomb scare shook Iligan City after a grenade blast Wednesday night that injured three bystanders in the city’s public plaza there.

The Iligan City Police scrambled early Thursday morning after a resident reported a suspicious box placed beside the Quezon Street, a few meters away from the office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Bomb experts, aided by bomb snipping dogs, rushed to Quezon Street past 6:40 Thursday morning as anxiety runs high among city residents following a grenade blast early Wednesday night in the city plaza inflicting minor injuries on bystanders.

In a report monitored

from here Thursday, Jo Pantoja, the city information officer, said that no bomb was found in the cartoon.

Pantoja then asked the residents for vigilance and sobriety as investigation into the Wednesday night grenade blast went high gear.

“The city residents had come together to exercise vigilance following a grenade blast Wednesday night in the city plaza, a stonethrow from the city police station,” he said.

Reconciliation between them had already been diligently employed but all proved futile.

I am glad that gannets— perfect description of greedy leaders—do not have a shanty under your watch; rather, they are driven away where the epals and powerseekers pity-party. In that banquet, we will see Joseph Emilio Abaya and six other officials from the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and Land Transportation Office (LTO) who made vehicle plates synonymous to epitaphs—only that they dishonor the honest who do not give the lagay (grease money). We will behold managers from the Energy Regulatory office in that dine-out; did they hope you to believe their alibi for bid rigs? Thousands who are verified coddlers of drug entrepreneurs will revel there.

We have high hopes in your ability to fulfill your campaign promises. You are blunt as you are an actionman. You curtly declared that this will be a clean government. And that is what I initially find at your level. You even inked the Freedom Of Information for the executive branch—one of your first moves upon assuming office.

You promised that drugs and criminality will meet their Punisher. We appreciate that with your war, many can start to stay in their homes without a reason to be alarmed of sudden robbery. They can begin to walk in the streets at night without needing advanced martial arts skills to stay alive.

You cannot rest with your conscience that the site solely used for honorable men was used by a family from Ilocos to claim that they did no offense and could get away with it because they are wealthy and their affluence did miracles to edit history--as if they paid an editor to gloss the colossal blunder. Because of it, the Marcos family would deem legal battles unnecessary to absolve what their patriarch did. They simply use that symbol to flaunt what they do not have hoping to end all hullabaloo about Filipinos’ sufferings that he caused. Why bury the killer with the likes of his victim-martyrs to give Marcos the same respect?

When the UN and the US leaders confront you about extrajudicial killings which they only speculate at best in our country, your stance is admirable. They should not think that what works for them should work for us, too: they trample the equality of states principle.

They are advocates of some high-sounding philosophies which actually are poppycock. So the best you can give them is your feisty campaign. Later, you will see that they will start modelling our success like a Manny Pacquiao. What a KO! Moreover, where previous leaders only hope to end the armed conflict of the NPAs, you have shown authenticity in fighting what aligns with their cause and have seen big leaps towards peace. You understood better why the rebels resort to the bloody path. What took more than fifty years to brew and grow, you almost stopped with a sleight of hand. Amazing.

I was critical of the Marcos regime assailing him left and right without a bit of mercy. I was then very courageous and ambitious that I wanted to rise in the profession fast amid the dreams of uncertainties.

My newspaper, the Mindanao Reporter, without investments of sorts, was barely established and dependent of advertisings and public relations. I was not yet allowed to publish judicial notices and with a growing family behind me, everything ahead seemed hell. There was nothing behind to push me except my strong determination to exist under the shadow of fears of military rule.

I think it was an aging Spanish priest, Rev. Father Garcia, who manned the church. It was he who baptized my fourth child, a girl, now a nurse who lives with her family in Germany.

To be honest, recalling this event of my life is making me emotional and I feel my tears are falling from my eyes. But I cannot change facts and now fresh from my mind was the hardship I have to struggle to sustain life and keep my family afloat.

Veteran broadcaster and one-time vice president of the Republic Noli “Kabayan” De Castro was this media personality, and given the contrasting backgrounds of Noli and Leni---Noli is a broadcaster all his life while Leni has been a practicing lawyer since she passed the bar---one would think Leni would be able to handle Noli’s questions like she was picking peanuts.

Amazingly, however, after Noli persisted in asking Leni to explain how the vice presidency would be stolen from her, Leni suddenly started groping for words, giving convoluted and winding sentences, and even became hard of hearing, asking Noli to repeat his question.
