DAVAO City -- Mayor Rodrigo Duterte bids goodbye to Dabawenyos but assured the city will remain in good hands. “I will leave you with a heavy heart,” he said.

This was because, if he wins, Duterte said most of his time will be spent in Malacañang. And if he loses the election next year, he said, “Wala na akong babalikan sa (I have nothing to return to in) City Hall – I will retire from public office.”

Duterte stressed he has already turned over the helm of the city to daughter, former mayor Sara DuterteCarpio. “Nasa crossroads na ako sa buhay ko (I am already in the crossroads of my life),” he added.

It was also Duterte’s longest public vow after his message and last Pasko Fiesta as this city’s mayor.

He thanked the people who stood by him through the

22 years of his mayorship, one term in Congress and one term as vice mayor.

Duterte opened the Pasko Fiesta on Friday night.

Pasko Fiesta is an annual Christmas event under his administration.

In his message, Duterte asked the people to treat each other as brother and sister. ”Don’t say something about the religion. Mindanao is for all people,” he said adding that he would never bar any Filipino from entering any part of the country.

MORE often, the unfolding events around the world make us sad and desolate.

We are talking about the killings of innocent civilians around the world. While the bombings in Paris, France that killed 130 innocent civilians were carried out by a belief who hates humanity, the shooting rampage in San Bernardino, California was inflicted by a devout family man and his wife.

The couple, donning a military outfit, each armed with an assault rifle and a handgun mowed down “coworkers” and officemates who were holding a Christmas party along with their children in San Bernardo few days ago. My father who was a public school teacher was sent to Camp Keithly in Dansalan, Lanao (now Marawi City), for military training.

I thought everything was normal and war has been just part of living. Christmas was around the corner and I expected a big party in the home with lots of gifts, food and candies.

My environment was lonely as we evacuated to a far mountain range. Behind our small nipa hut was a foxhole where we could hide in case of Japanese assault.

Not far from our place was a river where I learned how to swim, catch fish and play.

Two of my elder brothers taught me how to fight, to climb a guava tree and even plant vegetables. I was so young and innocent when I learned how to ride a horse, a carabao and tried to enjoy life by myself. I tried to plow our cornfield with a cow-drawn primitive method of farming.

We have to learn to be comfortable with uncomfortable challenges, because we can’t discover new oceans unless we’ve got the courage to lose sight of the shore.

We need to believe that the best jobs haven’t been found yet, and the best work hasn’t been done yet. But we can’t have the life we want if we don’t change the life we have.

A successful woman said: “A bad habit never goes away by itself; it’s always an undo-it-yourself project.”

Smart people sometimes change their minds—but fools never do.

Friday December 4, 2015 the Philippine National Police Maritime officers of Butuan City led by OIC chief SPO2 Arturo Capania, and SPO2 Jubapaulin Arcadio and the group conducted a night seaborne patrol along the seas of Butuan bay as requested by Cabadbaran City Agriculture Office through Mr. Alden Clemenia. The authorities monitored the sea for illegal activities using their night vision goggles and information fed to them by informants.

Around 1:00 one o’clock at dawn of December 5 the group spotted a flash of light from a distance and immediately disappeared. They suspected it was an illegal fishing using super lights.

SunAsia to build biggest solar farm in Cebu RENEWABLE energy developer SunAsia Energy will build the biggest solar farm in Cebu, with a capacity of 60 megawatts (MWs), the company said in a statement.

The Toledo solar project has an estimated cost of USD 120 million, composed of 200,000 European standard solar panels that will be built 70 meters above the ground.

It will occupy about 70-hectares of the Baltao farm, while maintaining the livestock production in the area.

SunAsia Energy targets to finish the construction of the power plant by February 15, 2016.

According to a study from the Power Systems Research and Consultancy Group (PSRCG), it will generate 861,199 Megawatthours (MWh) of electricity each year and offset 1.72 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

Aside from installing ground-mounted solar farms, the firm also offers grid-tied solar installation starter kits for households, gridintegrated commercial solar rooftop solutions for businesses and customized large solar rooftop for industries.

Consequently, if the current United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Le Bourget,

France will still fail to come up with a solution to global warming and climate change, in much the same way that the first 21 years of UN conferences on climate change utterly failed to find a solution, extinction and death of mankind wouldn’t be so far behind anymore.

The only problem here is that, although there is already a draft agreement conformed to by the countries participating in the 2015

climate change conference, it is not expected to yield any immediate solutions as yet since it has not been firmed as a law which will have obligatory effect on the world.

In short, the Paris conference notwithstanding, there is total failure once again in finding a solution to global warming.

Rainfall: A new way to look at trees for climate mitigation SUMMARY: In many parts of the world local people are convinced that forests, trees and rainfall are related in more than one way: forests and trees not only depend on rainfall but help to generate it. Scientists confronted with this perspective have always denied such effects, or at best been ‘agnostic’, as it seemed impossible in their data to find evidence. New evidence on credible mechanisms for forest and tree effects on rainfall is, however, emerging. It can revolutionize current climate negotiations that all focus on greenhouse gas emissions. Biological rainfall generation may be as important for the water cycle as biological nitrogen fixation is for the nitrogen cycle.

Managing trees for their roles in rainfall is easier to understand than the complex carbon story, and will offer new ways of reducing negative effects of climate change.

Rainfall made through evapotranspiration from plant matter cools the air around, since plants use heat energy to release water into the atmosphere. And a tree is more cooling than short vegetation; it uses 100–200 mm more water per year.

But the story is much more interesting, thanks to air currents that transport moisture from one place to another.

He said the turtles, after the rescue, were turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for appropriate action.

He said the DENR, after the documentation and tagging, led the release of

the two green sea turtles.

The release was witnessed by police and municipal government officials of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Children. They fed the 101 needy children as beneficiaries in their foundation.

They gave allocated fund per pupils for 4 weeks feeding daily. It was so miraculous even for a while that our school children benefitted as part of their program and mission.

The teaching staff and parent of these children were very much thankful of the unexpected blessings to our children. This foundation is like a Good Shepherd

that feeds not only for spiritual aspect but to the physical strength of our children. We can’t repay of the goodness they have shared. We were refugees just like the Syrians of today only that there has never been any help from anyone unlike them who even demand for more. I learned how to live as a mountain boy and wore clothes made out of abaca fibers. I enjoyed life, though with lots of wild fruits, watching eagles and hawks fighting for food.

Then we would hear about babies being tossed into the air by the Japanese invaders and struck with bayonets as they touched the ground. I saw cadavers of victims who were evacuees like us and we helped bury them. The old and the sickly were lined up and shot dead. I heard of collaborators, traitors and spies who helped the enemy in their campaign for war. I saw shallow graves in our midst, Japanese planes buzzing our area and terror everywhere and everyday.

Life was tremendously filled with uncertainties, sorrows, melancholy and punctuated by tragedy.

As the war was about to end, my parents built a modest makeshift chapel in our evacuation area and invited a priest to say a holy mass. Refugees were invited The problem with the Japanese was not so much to us, but we were alarmed by the rampant assault of the “magahats” a mountain tribe who attacked Christians.

We were like “bibingka”, a native cake cooked by flames from above and below. The natives were more ferocious and scary as they use spears to kill. We survived amid thunders of war and tribulations against the backdrop of death and defeat.

Surely, all of them are known experts in finding solutions to environmental woes.

What is more, each of them studied for long periods of time in search of a cure. They have also spent huge amount of money already in their research and conferences and meetings about global warming and climate change. The fact is, the latest climate change conference in Le Bourget, France is already the 21st annual meeting on the matter.

So, what, really, is behind the repeated failure of the world to find a solution to environmental destruction? As I see it, this failure is largely due to the failure and blind refusal of experts to recognize that the true solution to global warming and climate change lies in its spiritual angle.

-oooSOLUTION TO GLOBAL WARMING: If the truth be told, with scientists, experts, and world authorities continuing in their refusal to acknowledge the spiritual angle of global warming and climate change, the more difficult and impossible it would be for them to find a solution to the deadly problem.

If they will only read the Bible of the Christian believers, they will not fail to see that global warming and climate change was actually prophesied to happen in its verses, which say that the sky over our heads will be bronze and the soil will be like iron if people will no longer listen to God and will no longer obey His commands.

If we will only look more carefully on these verses of the Bible, it will appear that the solution to global warming will be very simple: listening to God and obeying His commands all over again. The only real problem here is that, man has become so confused in his mind, leading him to rebel against God and refuse to listen to Him and obey His commands. Death and destruction are the sure penalties for this madness.

Messages of Burmese refugees’ hope echoed by American missionary in CDO Story and Photos by MARK FRANCISCO Lifestyle Editor

FROM the cramped Karen refugee camps in the Thailand-Myanmar border to the urban serenity of Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines, it seemed to be a cultural shift for the then 28-year-old Californian missionary Gordon Griffith when he got married here last year.

But it was not. For Gordon could relate that the 40-year-old conflict in Mindanao is akin to the plight of the Karen people in Thailand.

Persecuted by what was then known as Burma in the late 1940s, the Karen people are still in a seemingly stateless notion and has been cramping in nine refugee camps in Thailand for the past 60 years suffering from overcrowding, disease and periodic

attacks from the army of what is now known as Myanmar.

Embarking on a Christian mission to the Karen refugee camps in the province of Kanchanaburi in Thailand in 2009, the professional photographer Gordon taught the refugees how to document human rights abuses, taught English to the Karen kids and assisted the grassroots-based newspaper within the camp on the basics

In 2012, Gordon met the then 24-year-old Graceila Verdadero who was a Filipina from Cagayan de Oro working as a Christian missionary in Sabah, Borneo. In October 2014, the couple got married and settled down in this City of Golden Friendship.

Despite that, Gordon never forgot his fiveyear-immersion with the Karen community in Thailand. After settling down here, he decided to continue his peacebuilding advocacy here in Mindanao.

Gordon partnered with the local Light of the Word Church’s peacebuilding arm which is in turn part of the larger Philippine Ecumenical Peace Platform. Gordon was part of the Light of the Word’s group successfully securing the release of then Pfc. Adonis Jess Lupiba from the New People’s Army (NPA) in Gingoog City.

To help in the logistics of his peacebuilding efforts, Gordon created the #thegriffithprojecthouse where various crafts meticulously made by his talented wife are sold. These are succulents in cocktails, non-traditional Christmas decors, macramé, wall decos, mini-furniture, stylized jars, dreamcatchers and other cute handy house items. Some of these stuff are currently exhibited and also for sale at the 2/L, North Concourse, Limketkai Center till December 10, 2015.
