AGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Ayala group has brought its AC brands of businesses engaged in automotive, healthcare, education and infrastructure to Cagayan de Oro in what its executives described on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, as “accelerating the future with SMEs (Small, Medium Enterprises) in Mindanao.

Ayala group showcased some of the more successful small and medium enterprises that it has helped grow and prosper in a forum, held at its own Ayala Centrio Mall, here.

The forum, attended by scores of entrepreneurs from the SME sector in the Mindanao region, also became the avenue for the Ayala Group to reaffirm its commitment to make businesses better to improve the lives of more communities.

AC Infra President and CEO Rene Almendras said Ayala group has considered three factors in coming to Mindanao to invest -- seeing potentials, making business better and improving lives.

Almendras introduced during a press conference some of the business ventures of the company. In automotive, these are with Honda, Isuzu, Volkwagen and KTM. Its health care services come via the Family Doc Clinic and the newlyacquired Generika.

In education, Ayala promises accelaration in the learning process.

“Its beyond education,” Almendras explained. “It’s building confidence and teachers are train like facilitators,” even as Ayal plans to put up Muslim learning institutions in Mindanao through its flagship project, Affordable Private Educa-

tion Center (APEC) that comes in through the fourth brand, AC Infra, which has currently two coal-fired power plants being contructed in Mindanao.

In a video presentation, several of the people that had been served by Ayala Group through its various subsidiaries recounted how the company helped them in realizing their goals.

900-M project to connect 3 big interior towns in LDN NUNUNGAN, Lanao del Norte - Residents of Lanao del Norte, particularly those in the municipalities of Nunungan, Sapad and Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND) towns can now look forward to the start of a cimcumferential road that would connect the three municipalites in this province, officials said.

The said project has already been funded by the Department of Public Works and Highways ( DPWH) national office and is already

in the bidding process.

The project has an approved budget of P900 million and will be implemented next year A big chunk of the amount will incur for road projects, interconnecting barangays, town centers and public markets, which are needed to hasten the economic growth of the local peasants and other sectors of the community.

The circumferential road project would shortened the travel time from municipality

of Sapad going to Nunungan and to municipality of SND. According to the newly elected local executive of Nunungan, Mayor Marcos Mamay, for the past 20 years, the contintuents of his municipality have been deprived of having access roads in going to town centers to deliver their farm produce.

But with the latest development, this would pave the way to a more progressive municipality, he added.

“We ought to extend our thanks to the Duterte ad-

ministration and the DPWH for this colossal project that would be taking place next year in our area,” Mayor Mamay said.

He said the improvement and paving will focus at Sapad-Nunungan road with an exact length of 15 kilometers. Then, going to Nunungan and to SND with approximate road lenght of 20 kilometers.

Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Q. Dimaporo said that her administration would focus on agricultural

development, thus, the road project in Nunungan, which is considered as the biggest municipality in terms of land area, is instrumental in achieving the reflected plans and programs in the provincial investment plan.

A Brave New School Without Walls M

AR AMAG, BUKIDNON -- The Manobo children Precious, Princess, Bebs and Reggie Pandian were spending the dregs of the summer afternoon climbing up and down the pile of giant pine tree trunks as the air turned heady with the sharp scent of pine resin, dust, pollen and a hint of rain in Barangay Panadtalan, Maramag, Bukidnon.

As they heard claps of thunder coming from behind the southern hillocks, Reggie shouted in a singsong, almost-chanting voice, ‘’What are drums in the sky and their sounds are heard all over the earth?’’

“Thunder, thunder!” Answered Princess, Precious and Bebs in unison then they all dashed a few meters to join other children seated on the bamboo dais at a long, open shed that is the classroom of the Mindanaw Tribal School, Inc. (MTSI) here. ‘’We have the future of our children like them in mind,’’ said Datu Bullman, as he turned towards the throng of children now gathered at the platform, all silently watching and listening to the adults. ‘’And the future of the Manobo tribe also when we thought of establishing, and later continuing this school of living tradition despite the many challenges we had faced,” continued Bullman, a member of the MTSI board of directors. ‘’We want our children

to be educated in the ways of the tribe so that our traditions and beliefs will be preserved, and our culture will not die but thrive instead,’’ he added. Datu Bullman was speaking to journalists on a recent exposure tour, as the ritual of welcome had segued into an informal forum and learning session for both the Manobo and the journalists.

The MTSI is one of the few tribal schools built mainly by the Lumad, the indigenous peoples of Mindanao. Established in 2006, the MTSI predates the government’s Indigenous Peoples Curriculum Framework by almost a decade. These tribal schools are called School of Living Traditions where students learn government-mandated subjects side by side with traditional skills and their academic knowledge buttressed by the cultural wisdom of their tribe’s belief systems.

At the MTSI, for example, students learn how to make musical instruments like the drums and the hegalong, the tribal dances, the medicinal herbs, weaving, agroforestry, traditional cuisine and tribal history, genealogy and languages like Binukid and Manobo alongside math, chemistry, computer science and English. The grades 7 to 10, under the K-12 system of the Department of Education (DepED), are taught here by five volunteer teachers following the regular school calendar.

administrative building cum library/museum was made from the repurposed wood and nipa shingles salvaged from a festival parade float that were donated by a pineapple-exporting company.

The main school shed was reconstructed from the old dismantled pinewood pillars and tin sheets, remnants of an old, disused building of a nearby defunct government agency.

For a decade or so, the school had endured several moves around the village, its peripatetic existence a reflection of the instability of a community of indigenous peoples still without security of tenure over what is historically their own ancestral territory. Its latest challenge was its eviction from its former site last year as it was directly along the highly dangerous path of the high-voltage towers of the electric power company’s transmission lines.

It was moved to its present location, an adjacent four-hectare area owned by the DepEd that in turn has allowed the tribe and the MTSI to use the land under a usufruct agreement.

Around 170 students use the 8-by-20-meters longhouse without walls as common classroom for Grades 7 to 10 classes. Four batches According to Datu Cocoy, the school administrator, the MTSI with classes taught in tents made of surplus army tarpaulin, then later, bamboo and nipa shanties built by the parents themselves.

Amelia Bojo, a professor at the Central Mindanao University and president of the MTSI , remarked succinctly that ‘’these are structures occasioned by the social neglect (suffered by the Manobo) but thus enabling the tribes and us their supporters to harness our own initiative and ingenuity to acquire building materials.’’

Bojo revealed that the

“Here the students find their identity, a sense of belongingness, a source of pride,” noted Bojo. ‘’So they endure the difficulties.’’

According to Bojo, at a recent strategic planning session, the directors looked forward to inaugurating the new building a stone’s throw away as the dormitory for students from remote barangays. The dormitory, made of bamboo with a flamboyant rooftop shaped like the sarimanok, will house 25-30 students who don’t have to walk several kilometers daily to and from their villages to attend classes. They also look forward to a new building of two classrooms and another building to house a museum, both of which were committed earlier by the provincial and municipal governments, respectively. ‘’Our insistence to remain faithful to austere vernacular building design had somehow made it difficult for us to obtain funding for building the school facilities,’’ Bojo said.

She recalled that ‘’a Japanese agency had offered a comprehensive building package but it required us to use their own designs so we had to turn it down.’’

But Bojo said the school’s wish-list includes sturdi-

er and more comfortable desks, moveable partitions between classes, a perimeter fence and two more sanitary toilets.

Through its many reincarnations, this learning venue had been ramshackle radical – indeed, minimalism to the max -- as espoused by its founding chair Datu Pandian, whose determined and uncompromising adherence to the traditions of folk construction heralded that spaces for learning be re-thought to be open and close to nature.

Soon, the kettle drums were brought out and the Talahari, a family ensemble, showcased their drumming prowess. Just then it thundered and the rains began to pelt down on the tin roofs.

What does this rain mean? The datu was asked.
