Honda automobile sales up 44 percent from January to October Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) sales rose by 44 percent to 16,046 units from January to October compared to the same period in 2014. Thanksgiving and the Filipino culture C HA R L O T T E , No r t h Carolina--A week ago we celebrated Thanksgiving here in the US. Thanksgiving is a harvest festival and an important public holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.

I likened Thanksgiving to the fiestas in the Philippines which revolve around the patron saint of a city or a barangay (village) where there is a lot of merriment.

On Thanksgiving schools are closed for about three or four days.

It is that time of the year where lots of foods are cooked and prepared, when turkeys have no place to hide since all American homes will serve turkey as part of the celebration.

The event calls on everyone celebrating the occasion to gather round the table and partake of the food and blessings received for the year.

Family togetherness is deemed absent in most US households because of work demands. But those who still uphold the celebration will ensure that there is enough bonding time with family members and friends.

I understood that David came from a small size family and that he was orphaned at an early age. Ranni and Malou’s story reinforces the reality of how Filipinos value their clan.

Only a little cheating like everyone else does to survive. Honors his father and mother? Definitely. He sends money home all the time.

Sounds like a good person doesn’t he? But do you know what Jesus Christ said to a young man like the one we just talked about? Jesus saw right through this nice, churchgoing young man.

Jesus knew that this man really loved his good life and religious reputation more than he loved Jesus.

Yet this man thought he was a Christian and right with God just because he went to church, and was kind to other people. But Jesus said he’s not even close! Harsh words, aren’t they?

Jesus taught that there is absolutely nothing that any person can do, whether it’s going to church or giving money to the poor, that is good enough to reach God’s standard of perfect goodness from the heart. You see, if God can forgive and accept me into heaven just because I’m a good person, then Jesus was either a crazy lunatic, or a liar! Because Jesus Himself said that He, God the Son, He had to die and give His own perfect life to pay the penalty for all our wrongs, so He could forgive us and make us His children.

So friend, just going to church cannot save you and me. Giving money to the poor cannot earn us God’s gift of forgiveness and new life. There is nothing or no

Gov. Cerilles wins int’l agri award for policy-making and governance

PAGADIAN City—Zamboanga del Sur Governor Antonio Herrera Cerilles has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Excellence in Agricultural Leadership Award 2015 from the Association of Agricultural Technology in Southeast Asia (AATSEA).

Cerilles was honored for his “outstanding achievement, dedicated service, untiring efforts, exemplary vision, farming system innovation, unwavering commitment and selfless support in the field of organic agriculture,” said AATSEA President Kasem Soytong in an email.

AATSEA, based in Thailand, is an organization of scientists in Southeast Asia.

Cerilles received the award for Policy-Making and Governance during a glitzy ceremony during the 4th International Conference on Integration of Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in Hanoi, Vietnam last November 27-28 which was attended by at least 200 participants and 28 scientists.

AATSEA recognized Cerilles for his innovative GO-CFS or Gahung-Gahung Organic Cassava Farming System: A Climate Change

Adaptive and Poverty-Alleviating Farming Strategy program that promotes the organic cassava farming system that benefits thousands of smallholder farmers in Zamboanga del Sur. “Our organic cassava program has matured to a level that is worth replicating in other provinces and countries,” he said.

Cerilles said that he conceptualized GO-CFS in 2001 when he had a brief rest from politics.

During that time, cassava farmers in Zamboanga del Sur followed the conventional cassava farming system but when Cerilles assumed the top elective post in the province, he mustered the resources of the provincial government to promote organic cassava farming.

Since then, cassava farming in the province has never been the same again. In 2013, Cerilles started implementing another program to complement the GO-CFS — an innovative microfinance economic enterprise.

In GO-CFS, a cassava farmer is able to harvest cassava ten times a year from a hectare of farm, thus enabling them to have a sure monthly income of P7,000 to P12,000. Aside from this, cassava farmers also have other sources of

Zamboanga del Sur is also a founding member of the Association of Asian Local Governments for Organic Agriculture (ALGOA), which is implementing the “bio-village model of organic agriculture development” together with IFOAM-Asia.

Brownouts in Value of mine exports two Surigaos from Surigao, Dinagat falls

SURIGAO City -- Prices of nickel export products have continued to plummet in the world market affecting profits of large-scale mining companies, Lilibeth M. Mangsal, district collector of the Bureau of Customs in Surigao City said.

A document obtained

by MindaNews showed that from January to October last year, mine export products being shipped out reached 15.9 million metric tons with a total value of US$775.8 million.

For this year, the same

volume of mine exports was valued at US$596.4 million.

Mangsal said the mine exports had come from the operations of different mining companies in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands.

She said November and December were not included as extraction activities would stop during these months due to rains.

The exports were mostly limonite and saprolite, high and low grade nickel ores that were shipped to Japan and China.

acting export document processor at the Bureau of Customs said a few of these exports were cobalt sulfide and nickel sulfide which are produced by Taganito High Pressure Acid Leach of Nickel Asia Corporation in Claver, Surigao del Norte.

Dulmar M. Raagas, president of Chamber of Mines Caraga Region Inc., said the prices of nickel ores continued to dip affecting the profitability target of the mining companies.

Raagas said there are 13 mining companies in

Dinagat Province and five others in Surigao del Norte.

He said the decrease in export earnings affected taxes and royalty shares to some indigenous peoples’ communities.

Currently, he said, the price of nickel in the market has gone down to US$8,145 per ton, the lowest price in the last four years.

In 2011, Raagas said the price of nickel in the market was pegged at between US$21,845 and US$18,266 per ton.

BUTUAN City--A 10-hour power interruption hit parts of Surigao del Norte, the whole of Siargao Island and parts of Surigao del Sur last Saturday, November 5.

The power interruption was due to a scheduled shutdown of the PlacerMadrid 69kV line at 8 am to 6 pm that affected the franchise areas of Surigao del Norte Electric Cooperative (SURNEO), Siargao Electric Cooperative (SIARELCO) and Surigao del Sur Electric Cooperative II

(SURSECO II).

Milfrance Capulong, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Officer, said the reason for the power shutdown was for the rehabilitation of critical structure and replacement of rusty insulators along the Placer-Madrid 69kV line.

In an advisory prior to the brownouts, Capulong assured that normal operations will immediately resume after work completion.

Operation of int’l ports in Davao Norte to boost economy DAVAO City -- The provincial government of Davao del Norte is expecting further growth in the province’s economy next year when the international ports start to operate.

This was revealed by Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provincial head for Davao del Norte Romeo Castanaga, who said that the quick movement of goods to and from the province through the international ports is a big boost to the province’s economy.

Castanaga said although these ports are privatelyowned, accessing the ports services by the business sector will have a tremendous effect on the flow of business.

He said agriculture products coming from D av a o d e l Nor t e a n d neighboring areas will have faster movement and lesser spoilage given the shorter distance from the production farm to the port instead of bringing the goods further to the ports in Davao City and

in other areas.

He said it will also address the problem of congestion.

Davao del Norte has two international ports namely the Hijo International Port Services (HIPS) located in Madaum, Tagum City and the Davao International Container Terminal (DICTS) located in San Pedro, Panabo City.

The HIPS is a joint venture between Hijo Resources Corporation and the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI).

The construction of the seaport and container yard has an estimated cost of PHP5.72 billion. It will have a total port area of 54 hectares with area accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).

The DICT, which started operation in 2014, had its construction with San Vicente Terminal and Brokerage Services (SVTBS) with cost of PHP2.65 billion.

The containerized terminal will have a capacity

of 400,000 FEUs (fortyfoot equivalent units) per year and its modern and state-of-the-art facility and terminal operating system (TOS) can cater up to 300 containers.

Meanwhile, Castanaga said other than those that already applied for incentives for doing business in the city like the Robinson’s with PHP1.7 billion investments, with the mall

expected to open and operate in early 2016, there is a City Mall proposed

by Manila-based Double Dragon Properties.

He said the other new applicants include the

TACLOBAN City--The road to recovery was not easy for farmers and fisherfolk who lost almost everything they had when Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) struck on November 8, 2013. Many of them were already hardpressed to make ends meet even before the disaster and the will to rebuild their lives had almost faded.

“When the typhoon hit, our rice was almost ready and we were expecting a good harvest,” narrated Susan Gaspay of Burauen, Leyte. “We lost everything – our ready-to-harvest rice, our stored seeds, and our rented tractor, not to mention our house.”

Fast-forward to two years later, Susan, along with hundreds of thousands of other farmers and fishers are now role models of recovery in their communities.

Through the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Government of the Philippines, the concept “building back better” has become a reality for the agriculture and fisheries sector of the four severely affected regions of Western Visayas (Region VI), Central Visayas (Region VII), Eastern Visayas (Region VIII) and MIMAROPA (Region IV-B), including far-flung remote islands and upland indigenous communities.

This was made possible by the financial contributions of 14 international donor agencies, which reached

“This has been a unique emergency and rehabilitation response for FAO. It was the first Level 3 crisis declared within the Organization, the highest category of emergency response.

This involved fast-tracked operational procedures and the deployment of massive support from the FAO headquarters in Rome and the regional office in Bangkok.

It was also one of the largest programs directly implemented by FAO in collaboration with the Government,” said José Luis Fernández, FAO Representative in the Philippines.

Through its two-year Typhoon Haiyan emergency,

recovery and rehabilitation programme, FAO’s 22 projects covered interventions in rice and corn farming, coconut-based farming systems, fisheries and coastal communities and coastal/ mangrove forest rehabilitation.

Stories of recovery “A notable aspect of FAO’s Haiyan response is the mainstreaming of Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) principles into all the elements of the programme. This is a core tenet of FAO operations, which ensures the highest levels of program accountability in terms of participation, governance, transparency and addressing

complaints by programme beneficiaries. AAP principles were integrated into the design, implementation and evaluation of projects, and communities were engaged since the beginning to ensure that both the process and what was being delivered addressed their needs, especially for the most vulnerable,” explained Cristina Graziani, FAO’s Emergency Operations Manager for the Typhoon Haiyan programme.

Marife Jalbay, a member of the Abejao Farmers Association in Salcedo,

Eastern Samar, recalls how their group was selected to undertake value-addition training through an assessment conducted by FAO. This has led them to expand their farm business by producing cassava chips. With a larger role in the value chain, they are able to earn significantly higher returns compared to selling raw cassava to nearby markets, which fetched an average of Php 120 (USD 2.50) per barrel. For that equivalent weight of cassava turned into chips, they now make Php 3 250 pesos (USD 69.60).

For Marcelina Calvez of Palompon, Leyte who lost her coconut trees to the typhoon, growing vegetables and other cash crops, as well as learning how to integrate these in land that would otherwise be idle, has helped her gain a stable source of alternative livelihood. As newly-planted coconut trees take six to eight years to bear fruit, FAO helped farmers establish diversified coconut-based farming systems that would address both immediate and long-term food and income needs. This also included the introduction of climate-smart farming technologies, specifically sloping agricultural land technology (SALT) or contour farming, which would help them maximize the use of their limited farm area by utilizing land under

coconut plantations or on hilly terrains.

“It’s hard work but it’s much better than our traditional way of farming. I’m now planting pineapples and I’m using the method I learnt from the training to plant madre de cacao as hedgerows because these plants are good for maintaining the fertility of the soil,” says Marcelina.

In many of the beneficiary communities, recovery was achieved by equipping farmers to establish and manage nurseries that will provide them with seeds and seedlings to rehabilitate their typhoon-damaged and disease-affected farms more efficiently.

“We usually buy seeds from the agricultural supply office here, but now we have the means to do it ourselves.

This brings immense pride to our community,” said Laurence Palmes Barotac of Viejo, Iloilo.

Marife, Marcelina and Laurence are among the 230 000 farming and fishing households or over 1 million individuals who are now well on their way to recovery through the support of FAO and its partners.

It is a divine teachings on how important it is to give, and quite rightly so. Giving to others and making our very best contribution to the world, with grace and gratitude are all aspects of love.

We cannot be accountable for transformation and development in others, but we can be accountable for who we are, and with deep concern and a longing to create love and growth in the world, we can say that an act of love is a healthy living and vitality within ourselves.

The Teach for the Philippines and the Starbucks Philippine held its first regional Renovate to Educate event at Sacred Heart Village Elementary School last October 10, 2015 .

Their purpose is to redefining the quality of

education in the Philippines. Renovate to educate (rED) answers the challenges brought about by poor infrastructures and maintenance in the nation’s public school system. They aim not just to help schools and their students, but the communities around them as well. Through partnerships with the private sector, their program helps uplift the basic infrastructure standards of education that every Filipino child is entitled to.

At first, they came to our school and have a thorough assessment of our school infrastructure.

Luckily, they came into conclusion that Sacred Heart Village Elementary

In an exclusive interview after the yearly Yuletide season launch at the PNP-10 headquarters in Camp Alagar in Cagayan de Oro City, Desquitado said that in fact, the police regional office considered Espera and Gighe as the aggrieved party in connection with the grave misconduct case that they had faced before the Ombudsman.

Although Espera and Gighe hired private lawyers in their Ombudsman case, Desquitado said it was also the duty of PNP 10 to provide them legal counsel because the circumstances of the case they were facing were “in line of duty.”

The specific incident was the arrest of four persons for illegal possession of firearms in December 2014 by Espera and Gighe who were then assigned at Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) Station 2 in Cogon. When then Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 10 head Senior Supt. Alexander Tagum intervened, he alleged before the Ombudsman that Espera and Gighe pointed guns at him.

Incidentally, Espera and Gighe were the suspects in the shootings of siblings Roland and Harold Jamaca, their cousin Jim and his girlfriend Ma. Erika Yabut at the same month of the Cogon police station standoff, December 2014. Only Jim Jamaca survived. The shootings bore similar trademarks in previous execution-style deaths in Cagayan de Oro the past decade.

Espera and Gighe were previously restricted at Camp Alagar but they were able to post bail in September.

With this development, Desquitado assured the public that he is expecting Espera and Gighe to be good civilian citizens.

from page A1 gence Officer II Alvin Enciso, acting chief of the CIIS, Port of Cagayan de Oro and MCT, requested for the issuance of an alert order for the seven containers of sodium cyanide after receiving derogatory information that the shipment, which arrived MCT on October 23, 2015, was devalued and with no pertinent documents from the Environment Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Immediately on the same day, Atty. Ruby Claudia Alameda, district collector, issued the alert order intended for the shipment under the name of “Acestar International Service Corporation”, as consignee, with Bill of Lading (BL) No. APLU014021866, which arrived from Japan via Sima Sapphite V024.

However, last Tuesday, Enciso found out that despite the Alert Order on the shipment, the seven containers had been shipped out of the MCT. In their answer, the officials said the shipment was released because the alert order intended against the shipment was not reflected in the E2M System and, therefore, passed the scrutiny of the MCT officials who were the signatories of the release order.

Also, “the alert order was intended for Acestar International Service Corporation as consignee with the corresponding House Bill of Lading.

However, Acestar International Service Corporation is a mere forwarder with mother BL. When the shipment was released, it was in the name of the consignee, Greenstone Resources Corporation, and bearing a different BL number.”

The officials also explained that the alert order was “premature”, in the sense that it was directed to an international forwarded, Acestar International Service Corporation with mother BL. As regard the question on why the Envirnmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Caraga issued the environmental clearance instead of the Northern Mindanao office, the officials said it was proper, because Greenstone Resources Corporation is operating in Surigao, and the EMB that should release the certification must be from there because they have to check whether Greenstone has the capability to store the chemicals safely and properly.

The BOC-MCT officials’ explanation regarding the EMB permit runs contrary to the stand of Enciso and the CIIS though.

Enciso claimed the EMB permit must come from the port of entry, which is EMB10.

The officials also vouched for the credibility of Greenstone based on the record it has in terms of importing sodium cyanide via the MCT. Enciso also said the ship-

ment managed was released despite the fact that the container numbers, which were alerted upon, remained the same.

The questioned officials, however, said alert orders do not usually reflect the container numbers, but rather the consignee and the BL. A notice posted by the chief of the Assessment Division at MCT regarding alert orders says the same.

The officials also explained that there is nothing erroneous in the value being declared fo the shipment, in reaction to Enciso’s statement that it was devalued by three times.

The said shipment has been placed at P1.2 million.

The officials clarify that there was nothing wrong in the alert order and that Enciso was acting in good faith to protect the interest of the government and the general public.

The statement mentioned the Holy Father as an influence for their stand, saying, “Pope Francis, seeing the urgency of action in dealing with environmental crisis, points out the use of highly polluting fossil fuels – especially coal to be progressively replaced without delay (Cf. This will be the world’s first national human rights investigation into big polluters, said the Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

The 50 companies that will be investigated include Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, and ConocoPhillips. They are part of the 90 legal entities that are responsible for the majority of global carbon and methane emissions in the earth’s atmosphere, as identified by peer-reviewed research into so-called ‘Carbon Majors’ published in 2014.

“The response of the Philippines’ Human Rights Commission to the petition signals a turning point in the struggle to avoid catastrophic climate change. It opens a critical new avenue of struggle against the fossil fuel companies driving destructive climate change,” said Kumi Naidoo, the International Executive Director at Greenpeace International.

“This should hopefully inspire other human rights commissions around the world to take similar action. If I were a CEO of a fossil fuel company, I would be running scared. This is yet another indication that we are seeing the end of the fossil fuel era.”

The CHR disclosed in a press conference on 4 December in Paris that its investigation will involve all stakeholders including the 50 corporations, and include consultations and studies. As triggered by the petition, it will organize an investigation committee devoted to climate change and human rights.

“This investigation is not just about how fossil fuel companies do business, but that they do business at all in the future. It’s time we held to account those who are most responsible for the devastating effects of climate change,” said Zelda Soriano, legal and political advisor at Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

“We’re absolutely behind the Commission on Human Rights in seeking the opinion and cooperation of UN human rights experts and scientists, and its courageous investigation into these distant and faceless companies.”

Greenpeace Southeast Asia, together with 14 organizations and 20 individuals, filed the petition on 22 September 2015 calling for this investigation to take place. Over 100,000 signatures have been gathered in support of the initiative online from Change.org, SumOfUs and Greenpeace Southeast Asia, while eight international NGOs also provided advice and support[2]. Among other requests, the complaint asks for the CHR: to officially put these companies on notice, to request plans from these companies on how they intend to eliminate, remedy and prevent damages (or threatened damages) resulting from the impacts of climate change, and; to recommend to the government that it provides human rights mechanisms where victims of climate change can be monitored and assisted.

The two smaller Christmas Trees stands at 7 feet, each with 13 candle bulbs with the biggest tree standing at 17 feet tall having an approximate vital statistics of 220 inches, 240 inches, and 260 inches circumference respectively with 35 candle bulbs. The Christmas Trees are made up of 220 pieces of dried coconut fronds commonly known in Visayan dialect as “palwa” which were utilized to create a remarkable masterpiece. Additionally, “the biggest Christmas Tree is adorned not only with the usual Christmas trimmings but of poignant scenes caught on camera by our partner Photographers.” - said Ms Bjanesha M.
