PDIC takes over rural bank in Misor

THE Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. (PDIC)on Friday took over the management and operations of Xavier-Tibod Bank, Inc. (A Microfinance Rural Bank) in Misamis Oriental.

Under Resolution No. 2133. A dated December 1, 2016, the Monetary Board of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) directed PDIC as Receiver to proceed with the takeover and liquidation of the bank.

Lanao del Norte hosts triathlon amid violence

CAGAYAN de Oro City--In spite of the armed conflict in areas in its neighboring province, Lanao del Norte has remained undeterred in and has in fact acting as host to sports events within the month.

Gov. Imelda QuibranzaDimaporo said they are not affected by the fighting between government forces and the Maute group in Butig, Lanao del Sur and even hosted a triathlon competition.

The governor said “it is business as usual” in Lanao del Norte, and as proof of this, the Lanorte Man 2016

was held and was participated in by triathletes from all around the country over the weekend.

Quibranza-Dimaporo said Lanao del Norte was the venue of the last leg of the

Lanorte Man, a triathlon competition organized by the provincial government and participated in by local enthusiasts and professional triathletes from all over the country from

December 3 to December 4.

A special category for children, Lanorte Kids, was also held on the same date.

The Lanorte Man 2016, separated into two different types, was the final series

of the competition with 285 athletes competed to test who was at peak human body condition.

The types comprise of the Sprint and the Standard.

Davao eyed as new tourism investment destination in PH Tuesday, December 6, 2016

DAVAO City––The city is being eyed as the new tourism and investment destination for Chinese nationals, with 20 bankers and their spouses from Beijing expected to visit for a four-day, three-night tour anytime soon.

“This is the first organized Beijing groups to come here. We hope to get the market as these are Chinese big spenders and not just ordinary tourists,” said Alex Divinagracia, Vice President for Travels and Tours of the Davao Tourism Association (DATA).

Divinagracia said this is an offshoot of the previous sales missions made by former Tourism Assistant Secretary Arturo Boncato.

There is an influx of inbound travel to the Philippines and one of the cities benefiting from this is Davao, he added.

Jean Rose Tecson, City Tourism Officer, said there is also a group of tour operators from Xiamen who is now in the city from Dec. 3-7.

Meanwhile, a group of Chinese investors are set to visit Davao City next year to check out opportunities in infrastructure, real estate and tourism.

E arlier, Davao City Council Majority Floor Leader Bernard Al-ag said Chinese investors are also expected to visit the city next year to look for possible opportunities in real estate and other investments.

“We offered them the Three Ridges Integrated Area Development (TRIAD) area as this has been classified as a tourism development zone,” he said. TRIAD includes Barangays Catigan, Eden and Tagurano in Toril.

The Department of Tourism in Davao Region (DOTXI) is also eyeing regular flights between Davao and Xiamen this month. This is in addition to the regular Xiamen-Manila and Xiamen-Cebu flights.

It can be recalled that Xiamen Air brought some 80 Chinese businessmen and tourists to the city a few months ago to test the waters.

Tourism Assistant Secretary Eden David earlier said Davao is a viable market for Chinese tourists in the Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) tourist sector.

She added there are other feeder markets that go to Xiamen and a regular flight between Xiamen and Davao will help push the traffic between the said areas.

Esguerra however said “we have to start again, more than 400 countries are promoting to the Chinese market so we have to start at the bottom again.”

“There are more than 620 million internet users and more than 80 percent mobile device users in China so social media has a huge impact in the decision-making process of the Chinese tourists in choosing their destinations,” she said.

TSI renovates libraries of local high schools

Therma South Inc. (TSI), a subsidiary of AboitizPower, turned over newly renovated libraries to two high schools in its host communities on October 24, 2016 as part of its It’s A-Libe! Project.

Recipient of the newly renovated libraries were the Inawayan National High School (INHS) in Inawayan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur and Binugao National High School (BNHS) in Binugao, Toril, Davao City.

“The It’s A-Libe! Project aims to​improve the libraries​

of TSI host community high schools in Barangay Binugao and Barangay Inawayan,” said Jason C. Magnaye, TSI CSR Manager.

Under the project the school libraries were renovated into reading hubs using the design made by the College of A ​ rchitecture and Fine Arts Education of the University of Mindanao.

It also included the installation of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)’s science and technology e-library ​p ortals, dubbed as the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosks (Super Starbooks).

TSI and Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (AFI) financed the cost of the renovation activities, as well as the books and computer​hardware needed to implement the project.

Students at Binugao National High School (BNHS) checks out one of the lessons available on Starbooks.

Super Starbooks contains digital science and technology resources in text and audio-visual formats that are geared towards enhancing the learning ex-

perience of the students in the respective schools. The computer-based learning system also includes resources for livelihood.

There was no longer any position that she could resign from. She had been thrown out much earlier than her resignation. And nothing can change that anymore!

but Robredo brought it upon herself, really. The fact was that, when she accepted the Cabinet position which Duterte offered her, she was bound by each and every policy, and each and every direction, that the Duterte government undertook, even if she did not agree with those policies and directions.

As a member of the Cabinet, it was the duty of Robredo not only to preserve the unity of that Cabinet, but more so, to show some respect for the pronouncements of the very official that awarded her a position in that Cabinet, even if she came from a rival political party which showed meanness and foulplay against that official during the campaign for the 2016 elections.

Yet, she showed treachery almost from day one of her appointment. Even when she just barely warmed her seat as housing czar of the Duterte government, she was already hitting the President’s campaign against drugs, and his many decisions on how the government should be ran, including the burial of President Marcos. Clearly, she deserved the fate that has befallen her!

Church officials are opposing a government “safe sex drive” in schools, arguing that students should be given knowledge, not condoms.

Fr. Jerome Secillano, executive secretary of the bishops’ public affairs committee, branded the campaign as nothing but a

“waste” of taxpayers’ money.

“Distributing condoms will only condone sexual activity among students,” said Secillano, who is also the parish priest of the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Parish in the city’s Sampaloc district.

According to Casilao, the NDF panel also raised with the President their concerns on the alleged ceasefire violations committed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The meeting took place from 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m., he said.

Casilao did not provide other details on what Duterte and the NDF panel members discussed but said a statement on “what transpired during the meeting” would be issued.

Duterte last week issued an order granting pardon to four communist rebels convicted for murder and kidnapping.

The Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) identified the pardoned prisoners as Martin Villanueva, Bonifacio Suyon, Dindo Absalon and Rico Bodina, all of them farmers.

“These rebels have long been recommended for pardon but the previous government did not sign the draft order to release them,” government peace panel chair Silvestre ‘Bebot’ Bello III, said.

In a statement issued November 27, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) blasted Bello for “baselessly” claiming that a bilateral ceasefire agreement may be signed on December 10.

The statement maintained that a bilateral agreement is “most likely not to be forged before or around December 10, pending the release of all political prisoners.”

“The longer the GRP takes to fulfill its obligation to release all political prisoners, the prospects of such an agreement ever being forged become ever dimmer,” the CPP statement read.

At the Nov. 28 launching of the Mindanao Women’s Peace Table here, government peace panel member Angela Librado-Trinidad said they were working on the release of another batch before the yearend, most especially those who are in the priority list based on humanitarian consideration such as sickly, senior

“We are working on the release and we understand that the release of the prisoners is an issue of urgency but there are things that we need to work out. We have to make sure that the releases would not be subject to any question – legally and judicially. We are trying our best although probably the best might not be enough at this point in time. We are exerting all our efforts to make the release happen,” the lawyer-panel member said.

Trinidad said the government peace panel is finalizing its own draft of the ceasefire agreement.

She said they are defining, among others, what would constitute “hostile acts.”

“You have to make sure that these definitions will reflect the interest of all those who would be affected directly and indirectly, so we have to be consulting (them) and other than that, if we have come out with the definition, you also have to consult the other party whether this is acceptable or not, so this is not just an issue of defining it. It’s actually coming up with an agreement with respect to the more substantial issues,” she said.

She emphasized the need to sign a common ceasefire document with the NDF because “as long long as the parties are not bound by an agreement, individual parties could accuse each other of violations and this could not be resolved because there is no agreement yet.”

Dads approve in principle budget for scholarship, livelihood programs WITH the intention to support both the city’s College Scholarship Program and the Livelihood Development Program, the 18th City Council as a Committee of the Whole during the budget deliberations on Thursday presided over by Councilor Edna Dahino approved in principle the budget proposals of the Community Improvement Division for both programs for 2017.

The office proposed a budget of P500,000 for CCSP which includes the holding of activities under scholarship organization management.

One of the activities is the Seniors’ Tribute which will be implemented on March 2017.

This activity will be attended by 98 scholars including their parents and program staff.

In that event, the city will provide awards to those who will graduate, scholars who receive academic honors such as Summa and Magna Cum Laude, those who topped in the Licensure Exams, and those who passed board examinations.

The CID also proposed P1million for the purchase of a vehicle for use in the validation of scholars.

According to City Budget Officer Percy Salazar, the office justified that the vehicle is really needed for validation of scholars in each households. It can also be used for other programs.

LIVELIHOOD TRAINING PROGRAM On the other hand, the office proposed an amount of P2,112,000 for Operation on Livelihood Training.

According to Marissa Tagarda, there are 16 trainers with P1,200 honorarium each for 1,760 sessions for the whole duration.

The training program will be done once a week on Saturdays and Sundays within six months.

The office only accommodates 50 participants in each course.

For his part, Councilor Enrico Salcedo supported the program, saying this is one way to solve poverty.

“It is a poverty alleviation program of the city. One way nga programa sa administration nga kinahanglan i-priority nato,” he stressed.

TRAINING CENTER Tagarda said the city mayor has a plan that the city will utilize the old Agusan National High School as a livelihood skills training center. She said the office is planning to operate the proposed training center this month. The budget deliberations for other offices will continue next week. This is in view of the 2nd Series of Continuing Local Legislation Education Program (CLLEP) and the 4th Quarterly National Executive Officers-National Board (NEO-NB) Meeting of the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) to be held in Pasay City, Metro Manila on December 5-8, 2016.
