AGAYAN DE ORO CIT Y – Wi t h t h e theme, “Sa Pag-iingay mas Masaya, Sa Paputok may Disgrasya,” the Department of Health-10 (DOH) strengthens the ‘Iwas Paputok’ drive through posting of information, education and communication materials in barangay health centers, hospitals and in social media on the constraints of using illegal firecrackers to celebrate the yuletide season.

Nur Ian Caridad, DOHNorthern Mindanao Education promotion officer III, said that since there is no total banning of firecrackers in the city, DOH is urging every individual to make noise with the use of toy trumpets, kitchen utensils and other materials that make loud noise instead of lighting up firecrackers. Caridad added that the department is also using scare tactics on enforcing their campaign saying, “Gibutang sa community kung unsa ang mahitabo kung mugamit ug illegal firecrackers (We placed the materials that indicate the effects of using illegal firecrackers in the communities).” For his part, Roel Nunot of the Health Emergency See firecrackers, page B3

‘Volunteerism for critical programs’ implementation’ CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of the Interior and Local Government in Region 10 (DILG) has underscored the importance of volunteerism in ensuring the delivery of priority programs. “With the DILG programs that are being implemented, still, the focus is to unify the efforts of volunteer organizations and the department as well as our partner agencies, in ensuring that we could appropri-

ately deliver the priority programs especially those that are part of the priorities of President Duterte,” said DILG 10 Director Arnel M. Agabe during the 4th Annual Volunteers Gathering: Celebrating the Spirit of Volunteerism and Citizenship held at Capitol University Gymnasium, Cagayan de Oro. Director Agabe also emphasized the need of volunteers in implementing the critical program of

DILG—the Mamamayang Ayaw sa Anomaliya, Mamamayang Ayaw sa Iligal na Droga Program (MASA MASID). This was discussed further by DILG Local Government Operations Officer (LGOO) Liza D. Ladres, focusing on the role of public engagement in MASA MASID Program. “Each and everyone of us is our brother’s keeper so it becomes a moral obligation See programs, page B3

Kids, teens advised not to spend on firecrackers A WASTE and pollution watchdog has reminded the public, especially children and teenagers, not to spend the Christmas cash gifts they have received to buy firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices. The EcoWaste Coalition, a civil society partner of the Department of Health (DOH) in the ongoing campaign for an injury-free celebration, aired the appeal following the rise in the number of firecrackerrelated injuries a few days before the New Year.

“We would like to again remind our kids and teens that firecrackers are not toys. Please don’t be tempted to spend the money given by your godparents and others to buy banned ‘piccolo’ and other firecrackers, which can put your lives in danger,” said Aileen Lucero, the coalition’s national coordinator. “We address this appeal to kids and teens and their parents, as most of the victims in last year’s revelry were very young people,” See advised, page B3
