DAVAO City--After half a day of consultation with Davao fashion designers on Saturday, the Department of Tourism announced it would push through with the Miss Universe fashion show in Davao that it cancelled days ago. “Tuloy ang Mindanao Tapestry Show sa Davao City!” Tourism undersecretary Kat de Castro posted on Facebook Saturday noon. De Castro said she was tasked by Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo to fly to Davao City to look into the concerns of the disgruntled designers. “Lahat naman ay nadadaan sa mabuting usapan. Volunteer responder groups receive basic rescue equipment DAVAO City--Volunteer responder groups on Sunday received basic rescue equipment from the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) on Sunday. During a year-ender activity, ring buoys, life vests, rubber boots, thermal water jugs, tumblers, and rescue helmets were turned over by the CDRRMO to 12 independent volunteer responder groups. The equipment came from the Davao Region’s DRRM Council. The 12 groups, recognized by CDRRMO, are not affiliated with any barangay and do not receive any regular funding for their efforts and operations. Disaster responders of barangays are funded from their DRRM or five

percent of the internal revenue allotment. “They are vital to the CDRRMO because they augment our resources and capacity during the implementation of some programs like the City Wide Simulation Exercises and especially during times of disasters,” said Lyndon Leovic Ancajas, CDRRMO training officer. Ancajas added that volunteer responders go through trainings and drills to improve their skills and capacity. Carlo Danilo de Leon, president of the EAGLES Disaster Rescue Group, one of the largest volunteer responder groups in the city with over 600 members, welcomed the support given to them by the CDRRMO. “These equipment will

Giftgiving excites people and the giver’s thought and initiative may prove that they are still being remembered. But more than remembering the people one cares about, there’s an ultimate reason why Christmas has been known as the season of giving. More than upholding the virtue of generosity, its integral purpose is that of Christian faith with the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the foundation of the faith. Although December 25 may not be the accurate date of His birth (as the date was never mentioned in the four gospels), this event holds theological importance to his followers with His nature being God in the flesh and the life He led. In knowing His life by the Bible, one learns that everything He did was a manifestation of the value of giving. When He led His

P/Chief Supt. Agripino Javier was installed as the new regional police director in Northern Mindanao replacing P/Chief Supt. Noel Constantino. In his acceptance speech, Javier said that he would continue with the programs of the outgoing police regional director without a plan to change anything. During the turnover ceremony here Tuesday, Constantino said that 81,000 drug dependents surrendered under the Operation Tokhang (Knock and Plead) anti-illegal drive operation from July to December 20, 2016. To be covered by this ruling, balikbayan boxes

shall contain personal and household effects only, and content should not be in commercial quantities or intended for sale. Also, the availment of this privilege is limited to a maximum of three times per calendar year. At the same press briefing, Estrella also announced the Bureau’s heightened alert against the smuggling of goods in the country. “Customs C ommissioner Nicanor Faeldon has issued a memorandum to remind all officials and personnel to keep a tight watch on the entry of illegal finished firecrackers, fireworks, and other pyrotechnic devices in the country,” said Estrella. The only exemption which is allowed by law is the importation of ingredients used in manufacturing fireworks. Menwhile, Estrella announced that the Bureau of Customs has already collected P19.947 billion which is 57% of the P35.116 billion assessed target for the last month of the year. South Cotabato distributes P3.3-M plastic fish cages to Lake Sebu fishers GENERAL Santos City--The provincial government of South Cotabato distributed on Monday around P3.3 million worth of plastic fish cages to fishermen in Lake Sebu town in line with its bamboo-to-plastic fish cage conversion program. South Cotabato officials led by Governor Daisy AvanceFuentes spearheaded the distribution of at least 132 plastic fish cages to the initial 111 tilapia fishermen who availed of the local government’s “convert now, pay later” scheme. Loida Villa, senior environment management specialist of the Provincial Environment Management Office’s (PEMO) forest and inland water division, said the initiative is part of the local government’s efforts to convert all existing bamboo fish cages in Lake Sebu with plastic units. She said the bamboo-to-plastic fish cage conversion program mainly aims to reduce the organic load caused by decaying bamboo fish cages at the critical Lake Sebu. The use of the plastic fish cages are expected to improve water circulation and minimize pollution at the lake, she said. Under the “convert now, pay later” scheme, Villa said the beneficiaries are required to pay back the cost of the plastic fish cages through installment basis. She said 80 beneficiaries availed of the “1-twin fish cage with net” worth P22,474; 21 for the “2-twin fish cage with net” worth P33,723; and, 10 for the “1-twin fish cage with frame” worth P13,749.
