DAVAO City--After half a day of consultation with Davao fashion designers on Saturday, the Department of Tourism announced it would push through with the Miss Universe fashion show in Davao that it cancelled days ago.

resident Rodrigo Duterte attended Go Negosyo’s Christmas Townhall with the President on Monday (December 19) aimed at rallying support for development efforts in Sulu.

In his message, the President reiterated his campaign pledge to fight corr uption, dr ugs and criminality.

On the economic side, the President said he wants to leave it to the economic

managers to create the environment where businesses can thrive peacefully with the least intervention of government.

Duterte said that during the election campaign, he was dismayed that no

candidate talked about Mindanao. If Mindanao is not handled very carefully, the Philippines will end up being dismembered.

Volunteer responder groups receive basic rescue equipment DAVAO City--Volunteer responder groups on Sunday received basic rescue equipment from the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) on Sunday.

During a year-ender activity, ring buoys, life vests, rubber boots, thermal water jugs, tumblers, and rescue helmets were turned over by the CDRRMO to 12 independent volunteer responder groups.

The equipment came from the Davao Region’s DRRM Council.

The 12 groups, recognized

by CDRRMO, are not affiliated with any barangay and do not receive any regular funding for their efforts and operations. Disaster responders of barangays are funded from their DRRM or five

percent of the internal revenue allotment.

“They are vital to the CDRRMO because they augment our resources and capacity during the implementation of some programs like the City Wide Simulation Exercises and especially during times of disasters,” said Lyndon Leovic Ancajas, CDRRMO training officer.

Ancajas added that volunteer responders go through trainings and drills to improve their skills and capacity.

Carlo Danilo de Leon, president of the EAGLES Disaster Rescue Group, one of the largest volunteer responder groups in the city with over 600 members, welcomed the support given to them by the CDRRMO. “These equipment will

enable us to respond better and keep us safe during operations,” de Leon said.

Raniel Nocom, president of another volunteer responder group called Darcom, said he is happy that the region’s DRRM council recognizes

their efforts.

“Through these equipment, we will be able fulfill our duties more efficiently,” Nocom said. He leads a group of 37 volunteers.

During the yearend activity, team building activi-

ties and exercises were also conducted by fire, medical, and urban rescue units of Central 911.

“This is the first time that we are able to bring together volunteers to hone their skills and capabilities,” Ancajas

Down the side of the mountain roared a huge, powerful waterfall. It did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely at the second picture, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in the crack of the rock.

A mother bird had built her nest in the bush. There, in the middle of all the noise of rushing water and scary, thundering skies, that mother bird sat—in perfect peace.

FORMER President Ferdinand Marcos has long been dead and buried. But the issues on his person are still disturbing and dividing the Filipino people. He gave sight to the blind, comforted a grieving family member, gave back life to the dead Lazarus, multiplied loaves and fishes to a multitude that attended His sermon, and gave mercy to condemned criminals like Mar y Magdalene when she was about to face the consequence of her crime through stoning. In the time of his crucifixion, he had given His life on the cross as the ultimate sacrifice to fulfill God’s will for salvation, so men and women who believe in Him are redeemed from their sins.

To recognize Christmas as the season of giving is also to be reminded of the kind of generosity Jesus exemplified. It was more than granting wishes; it was giving more than what His people asked for.

say if the gift received was less than expected. One may admit that Christmas is most likely being anticipated because of this contemporary culture. Giftgiving excites people and the giver’s thought and initiative may prove that they are still being remembered.

But more than remembering the people one cares about, there’s an ultimate reason why Christmas has been known as the season of giving.

More than upholding the virtue of generosity, its integral purpose is that of Christian faith with the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the foundation of the faith.

Although December 25 may not be the accurate date of His birth (as the date was never mentioned in the four gospels), this event holds theological importance to his followers with His nature being God in the flesh and the life He led.

In knowing His life by the Bible, one learns that everything He did was a manifestation of the value of giving. When He led His

403rd Infantry Brigade shared Christmas joy in commemoration of the 81st AFP Day IMPALAMBONG, Malaybalay City -- The 403rd Infantr y (Peacemaker) Brigade commemorated the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ 81st Founding Anniversary by sharing the Christmas joy with the children of BCT Elementary School in Barangay Impalambong, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon on December 20, 2016.

Together with Jollibee Malaybalay City Branch, the 403Bde conducted a Christmas Party for 64 kindergarten pupils of BCT Elementary School in commemoration of the AFP anniversary which was highlighted with the giving of toys, food sharing, mascot show, and parlor games -- simple activity that has definitely marked a beautiful and unforgettable memory for the kids.

The activity ended before lunch after the Christmas message of Col. Eric C Vinoya, 403Bde Commander, wherein he said: “I would like to thank everyone for making this Christmas activity happier and merrier than ever for our children. Under this cleared bid, TPI will hold indirect effective interests held by affiliated investment funds of The Blackstone Group L.P in World Power Holdings, L.P. and Sithe Global Power, L.P. As a result, TPI will own a 66.1% effective beneficial ownership interest in GMCP and 40%

effective beneficial ownership interest in GNPD. The proposed acquisition consideration is priced approximately at $1.2 billion and will be funded by a combination of internally generated cash and financing from foreign banks.

GMCP is a 604-MW subcritical thermal power plant, which started operations in 2014, while GNPD is a new project consisting of 2 x 668-MW supercritical thermal power plant,

located in Bataan.

The first of the GNPD units is currently under construction and is targeting commercial operations in 2019.

“We welcome the government’s latest move to clear our planned acquisition of stakes in the GNPower thermal power plants, as we consider this an essential strategy in our commitment to securing a balanced energy mix to support the country’s energy security, said Antonio R. Moraza, AboitizPower President and Chief Operating Officer.

also in line with our target to increase our attributable net sellable capacity to 4,000 MW by 2020. We consider this acquisition very strategic as it gives us immediate earnings from the operating asset and incremental capacity in the coming years from the plant under construction and its expansion,” At present, AboitizPower has investments in various thermal and renewable power generating facilities and maintains a balanced mix of energy sources to provide ample and reliable power at competitive rates.

Globe Telecom’s viral Star Wars video garners over 41 Million views Raises awareness in partnership with The Philippine General Hospital for the rehabilitation of its pediatric clinic With the global anticipation of the new Star Wars movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the country’s #1 mobile brand, Globe, reinforces its partnership with the iconic movie franchise through a heartwarming video inspired by triumphant children. Now a viral material since its launch on the telco’s official Facebook page, it has over 41 million views and has been recognized by top online news outlets such as CNN, Mashable, Huffington Post, and UpWorthy, among others.

The video tells the story of a girl who goes about her every day wearing a Stormtrooper helmet that ultimately piques the curiosity of people around her. One day, she enters her classroom and is surprised that her whole class too was wearing the same helmets, showing her support. P/Chief Supt. Agripino Javier was installed as the new regional police director in Northern Mindanao replacing P/Chief Supt. Noel Constantino.

In his acceptance speech, Javier said that he would continue with the programs of the outgoing police regional director without a plan to change anything.

Javier said that he fully supports the policies and program of President Rodrigo Duterte and vowed to carry out the anti-illegal drug and the anti-corruption campaign of the government.

Constantino was promoted to a two-rank general.

He would assume a new post in Camp Crame.

Constantino expressed his profound gratitude to President Rodrigo Duterte and to Chief Police Director General Ronald Dela Rosa for the promotion of his rank.

During the turnover ceremony here Tuesday, Constantino said that 81,000 drug dependents surrendered under the Operation Tokhang (Knock and Plead) anti-illegal drive operation from July to December 20, 2016.

He said that the regional police command also arrested more than 2,000 drug related suspects and killed 44 illegal drug traders during legitimate operations during the same period.

DOLE AT 83 IN REGION 10 JOINED BY RTWPB AND THE RCC The RTWPB-X joined the DOLE-X RCC in commemorating the 83rd DOLE Founding Anniversary highlighted by the unveiling of a huge collage of great men and women key officials of the Department in Northern Mindanao, who in their respective ways contributed to sustaining/increasing the relevance of the office in this part of the country until today.

He likewise guaranteed the strengthened protection and security of overseas Filipino workers, calling for the DOLE to respond effectively and efficiently to all workers’ needs that can make them happy about their conditions of living.

Specific programs and services include prompt advisory on terms and conditions of employment, liveli-

hood and income augmentation, social services, workers’ protection and welfare, enforcement of labor laws in a consultative manner through democratic approach, and making use of social dialogue as a mechanism proven effective in attaining/ sustaining industrial peace at plant level.

Sec. Bello emphasized the need for a strategic approach through tripartite partnership towards sound industrial climate that will allow protection of investors and employers who continue to contribute to job creation across industries. “The Department would like to bring all OFWs back home and be with their families by providing job opportunities locally, we will then remain steadfast in ensuring that their dignity as Filipinos are protected while on foreign soil,” the Secretary said. Thus, the vital role of the DOLE could not be over-emphasized in keeping emerging businesses flourish. DOLE is actually one of the vital agencies that can address developmental concerns of the progressing economy of the country.

Therefore, DOLE is at the forefront in making a happy citizen by providing services espousing quality service, productivity and quality that are appropriate for their needs. If workers are happy, their motivation increases prompting productiv-

ity. Productive workers usually earn more than the mediocre performers.

More importantly, productive workers allow enterprises to be more competitive beyond targets. Incentivizing productive workers positively reinforces good performance and allow best practices to positively influence others. Sitting on her chair inside the bus, teacher Mhae knows what they think.

Bureau of Customs Administrative Order 05-2016 lifts taxes on balikbayan boxes for qualified Filipinos while abroad, including Filipino citizens who are residing abroad and Filipinos who are holders of student, investors, and tourist visas.

To be covered by this ruling, balikbayan boxes

shall contain personal and household effects only, and content should not be in commercial quantities or intended for sale.

Also, the availment of this privilege is limited to a maximum of three times per calendar year.

At the same press briefing, Estrella also announced the Bureau’s heightened alert against the smuggling of goods in the country.

“Customs C ommissioner Nicanor Faeldon has issued a memorandum to remind all officials and personnel to keep a tight watch on the entry of illegal finished firecrackers, fireworks, and other pyrotechnic devices in the country,” said Estrella.

The only exemption which is allowed by law is the importation of ingredients used in manufacturing fireworks.

Menwhile, Estrella announced that the Bureau of Customs has already collected P19.947 billion which is 57% of the P35.116 billion assessed target for the last month of the year.

The Bureau expects to achieve a good revenue collection performance this month similar to November, when BOC exceeded its target revenue collection by more than P3 billion.

“Given this improvement, BOC is already at 93.3% of the P409 billion assessed target for the whole year,” said Estrella.

South Cotabato distributes P3.3-M plastic fish cages to Lake Sebu fishers GENERAL Santos City--The provincial government of South Cotabato distributed on Monday around P3.3 million worth of plastic fish cages to fishermen in Lake Sebu town in line with its bamboo-to-plastic fish cage conversion program.

South Cotabato officials led by Governor Daisy AvanceFuentes spearheaded the distribution of at least 132 plastic fish cages to the initial 111 tilapia fishermen who availed of the local government’s “convert now, pay later” scheme.

Loida Villa, senior environment management specialist of the Provincial Environment Management Office’s (PEMO) forest and inland water division, said the initiative is part of the local government’s efforts to convert all existing bamboo fish cages in Lake Sebu with plastic units.

She said the bamboo-to-plastic fish cage conversion program mainly aims to reduce the organic load caused by decaying bamboo fish cages at the critical Lake Sebu.

The use of the plastic fish cages are expected to improve water circulation and minimize pollution at the lake, she said.

Under the “convert now, pay later” scheme, Villa said the beneficiaries are required to pay back the cost of the plastic fish cages through installment basis.

She said 80 beneficiaries availed of the “1-twin fish cage with net” worth P22,474; 21 for the “2-twin fish cage with net” worth P33,723; and, 10 for the “1-twin fish cage with frame” worth P13,749.

In the first 10 months, Villa said the beneficiaries will pay 40 percent of the total cost and the remaining 60 percent in the succeeding 12 months.

Gov. Fuentes reminded the beneficiaries of their obligation to pay back the cost of the “affordable fish cages” through the agreed installment terms.

As additional task, she enjoined their cooperation in the maintenance of cleanliness at the lake.

“Let us not think only of ourselves but also of the future generations. Let us all help one another in making the lake clean and sustainable,” Fuentes said.

Pollution and the overcrowding of bamboo fish cages had been blamed over the occurrence of fish kills at the lake these past years.

The fish kill was caused by “kamahong,” a phenomenon caused by the sudden rise in the water’s temperature.

“Kamahong,” which usually occurs during the rainy season, triggers the rise of sulfuric acid in the lake’s waters that eventually caused the massive fish kill.
