700 inmates receive early Holiday treats

SOME 700 inmates from the government-run Misamis Oriental Provincial Jail (MOPJ)received hygiene kits during the outreach last December 17. The kit contains soap, shirt, toothpaste and toothbrush. The inmates were also treated with food packs. It was the first activity of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP)-Misamis Oriental chapter since the election of Villanueva town Mayor Jennie Rosalie Uy as chapter head earlier this year. According to Uy, all the 24 mayors from Misamis Oriental have unanimously decided to make the inmates of the Misamis Oriental Provincial Jail as the first beneficiaries for this batch of LMP members because “they are our constituents from Misamis Oriental and they are one of the underprivileged sectors in society since they are incarcerated” while their cases are still See TREATS, page A11

Parishes in silent protest v ‘killings’

Several dioceses and parishes across the country hold a silent demonstration against the surge of killings linked to the government’s war on drugs. The silent protest, according to the Caritas Philippines, is a show of support to calls for an end to the extrajudicial killings of drug suspects. Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive secretary of Caritas Philippines, said more parishes are joining the protest as more than 6,000 bodies have piled up since President Rodrigo Duterte took office in July. “Killing of drug traffickers without due process, even in the name of a just cause, is morally unacceptable,” said the priest. What is also alarming, he said, is that the poor are most vulnerable to loss of life and the violation and suppression of their rights. “Unfortunately, reports show that majority of those killed are poor people residing in squatter areas,” said Gariguez. “President Duterte’s claim of ensuring and proPasko sa North Cotabato.
