IT’s four years since tropical storm Sendong struck Cagayan de Oro City but still 6,000 families are waiting to be relocated.

During the fourth year commemoration of Sendong held Tuesday morning (December 15) at Gaston Park in Cagayan de Oro City, Aksyon sa Kahandaan sa Kalamidad at Klima (Akma) CDO secretariat head Nestor Banuag

said that the families are temporarily living with their relatives but they are entitled to the homes because they are Sendong victims.

Akma CDO is a federation of almost 40 homeowners associations in what used to be gated subdivisions that were washed out by Sendong.

On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the tragedy, Akma CDO is demanding the government to fasttrack their relocation

Banuag said that the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) had already allocated hectares of land in barangays Indahag, Balubal, Pagatpat and Lumbia and even one portion in the municipality of Opol in Misamis Oriental.

But until now, they are just that – vacant land.

DAVAO City--The Department of Agrarian Reform Region XI has turned over on Monday P22-million worth of farm machineries and equipment 29 agrarian reform beneficiaries’ organizations (ARBOs) from across the region.

Regional Director John M. Maruhom said the ARBOs are from Davao City, and from the provinces of Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley Province and Davao Oriental.

The farm machineries and equipment were procured under the Agrarian Reform Communities Connectivity and Economic Support Services (ARCCESS) project thru the Department Of Budget and Management-Procurement Service (PS-DBM).

The equipment include:

22 light-duty shredders, two cultivators/power tillers and eight units four-wheel drive power tractors (one unit 120 HP, two units 90 HP and five units 35 HP).

Thorough inspection and test runs were conducted by government inspectors upon the delivery of these farm machineries and equipment to ensure that they conform to specifications and in good working condition.

The suppliers were likewise required to conduct orientation and training on proper operation and maintenance of this equipment for the recipient ARBOs. The ARBOs’ actual need of these farm machineries and equipment were predetermined and validated by a third-party state university which was commissioned for the purpose.

The ARCCESS project is

DAR’s strategic intervention to retain the awarded lands of agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) through increased production and engagement in agri-based and related enterprises.

It aims to strengthen the ARB organizations by building them as hubs of support services in the community which are expected to contribute to increasing ARB household incomes and improving resiliency of ARB households.

It has five major components, namely: 1) provision of common service facilities (CSFs) for production and processing, 2) agri-technology and agri-extension services, 3) business development services, 4) credit facilitation, and 5) land tenure improvement.

The formal turnover ceremony of the machineries and equipment was held on December 14, 2015 at the DAR Regional Office XI Compound in Catalunan Pequeño, Davao City, and was attended by DAR XI officials and officers of the ARBO recipients. (DAR-XI/ Divino C. Dalanon)

Scientists say face mites evolved alongside humans since the dawn of human origins SAN Francisco--Scientists have discovered a universal human truth about our bodies: they all, without exception, have mites. A landmark new study, led by scientists at Bowdoin and the California Academy of Sciences, explores the fascinating, little-known natural history of the face mite species Demodex folliculorum, using genetic testing to link the microscopic animal’s evolution to our own ever-evolving human story. By zooming in on a type of genetic material (called mitochondrial DNA) in mite samples from around the world, scientists discovered that different human populations have different mites, that those mites follow families through generations, and that they are not casually transferred between humans. The study is published today in the Early Edition of the journal PNAS. Dr. Michelle Trautwein, Academy curator of entomology and senior author of the new findings, says improving the understanding of the mites that live in human hair follicles helps shed light on human evolution and may allow scientists to pinpoint mites’ role in human health. Mites exist in human ears, eyebrows, and eyelashes as well as hairs that cover nipples and genitals.

For most people, mites are harmless. For some, however, mites can be associated with various skin and eye disorders including rosacea and blepharitis.

Trautwein says this is one reason among many that scientists need to learn more

about these constant human companions.

“It’s shocking that we’re only just discovering how deeply our histories are shared with the mites on our bodies,” says Trautwein, who has traveled the world to sample mites and learn more about their cryptic lives. “They aren’t just bugs on our faces, they are storytellers. Mites tell us about our own ancient history—it’s a complex story, and we’ve only just scratched the surface.”

Friday last week, some 6,250 teachers from the Misamis Oriental school’s division converged at the LKKS atrium where P10.8 million was disbursed.

Each recipient got a cash gift the amount of which was dependent on their years of service.

However, Gov. Emano opted that no one should get an amount of not less that P1,800.

“This is not enough to compensate all the sweat and tears that these teachers spent in the process of educating our young. This gift is our recognition of their noble role in our society,” Gov. Emano said.

In his remarks during the program, the Governor ac-

and why mites vary geographically, study authors sampled 70 human hosts from around the world. For some subjects, intact mites were collected by drawing the curved end of a bobby pin across a participant’s forehead; in others, metal laboratory spatulas were used to take samples that included a mix of hair and skin cells (including mites) from cheek and outer nose. The scientists then sequenced mite DNA to look at the mitochondrial DNA of each

subject’s mites.

“We discovered that people from different parts of the world host different mite lineages,” says Trautwein.

“The continent where a person’s ancestry originated tended to predict the types of mites on their faces. We found that mite lineages can persist in hosts for generations. Even if you move to a faraway region, your mites stick with you.”

The study revealed that, in some cases, African Americans who had been living in the U.S. for generations still hosted African mites. These results suggest that some mite populations are better able to survive and reproduce on hosts from certain geographic regions. Differences in mite lineages, the authors suggest, are consistent with the divergence of human populations and support the “Out of Africa” hypothesis.

This widely accepted theory about the origins of humanity states that every living human today is descended from a group that evolved in Africa and dispersed into the wider world. Though the study results suggest that mites predated the dawn of modern humans, Trautwein says that mites were likely

along for that much later series of journeys off the continent.

“Another exciting mite revelation from our work is that mites aren’t shared easily,” says Trautwein. “Mites are not casually transferred to passersby on the street.

We seem to share mites primarily with our family, so it likely takes very close physical contact to transmit mites.”

Going forward, Trautwein and her multidisciplinary colleagues will continue to research the strange lives of mites and how they relate to human evolutionary history and health. Trautwein is in the midst of a multi-year project sampling arthropods (and collecting mite samples) alongside citizen scientists in homes on all seven continents, exploring the overlooked life that shares our homes and bodies on a daily basis. Past expeditions include Sweden, the Peruvian Amazon, and houses in the Academy’s own San Francisco backyard. Trautwein will continue sampling mites and collecting house-dwelling arthropods in Australia, Mozambique, China, and Antarctica in 2016-17.

Dismantle ‘coal-fired power’ plants In the next 10-year-period, starting 2020, the Paris Agreement signals the end of the fossil era.

The participants to the Paris Agreement acknowledged that the greenhouse gases are released by the burning of the fossil fuels.

This is the main cause of the warming of the Earth, which affect the fragile climate system. Thus, the elimination of the use of coal, oil, and gas for energy was the main issue of the Paris Agreement.

The two weeks meeting of the world leaders that include, among the 195 participants around the world, became signatories to the “Paris Agreement” that call for the gradual elimination of the fossil feed power and energy.

One of the targeted power sectors is the “coal-fired power plant” industries around the world. The coalfired power plants have been identified as one of the “dirtiest” sources of energy

that contributed to global warming. The plant is fed with bituminous coal.

It is understood that no amount of arguments, reasoning or rationalization could justify that carbon emitted by “coal-fired power plants” are clean.

In Misamis Oriental, the proponents and stakeholders of the coal-fired power plants, especially the local officials who benefited from it, argue that the “coal firedpower plants” are “carbon free.” These shrewd public officials and investors are deceiving the people in exchange of profits and greed.

The Paris Agreement also pinpointed to the developing countries as among countries that account to most “current emissions” of fossil fueled energy that would be largely responsible for future global warming.

Without doubt, with nine existing coal-fired power plants in the country, the Philippines is now identi-

fied as among the Asian countries with “carbon footprints” in the atmosphere.

With 16 other coal-fired power plants approved for operations in the coming years, the Philippines would become the largest contributor of climate change in Asia.

Perhaps, it is time for the local environmentalist groups to rally together to finally protest the construction of additional coal-fired power plants in Misamis Oriental.

There were suspicions though that some who professed to be “anti-coal plants” are easily blinded by lobby money. The anticoal plant activities were visceral when the Filinvest announced the construction of the PHP 30 billion coal-fired power plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

All the while the anti-coal protest seemed to gather more supporters only to fizzle along the way.

Before Fitzgerald himself died years later, he carefully wrote his will and instructions on how his riches were to be handled.

He wanted an auction to sell all of his valuable paintings. They were worth millions of dollars, so many rich people from all over Europe came to the auction.

Among all the valuable paintings, however, was 1 cheap, poor quality painting by an unknown local artist. It was a painting of Fitzgerald’s only son.

It was the last press conference for this year, it was learned. Members of the panel gave updates on their programs and services, as well as accomplishments for 2015 and plans and upcoming activities for 2016.

Gigaquit MPS facilitates ‘Salida Caravan’ to end VAW

GIGAQUIT, Surigao del Norte--The Gigaquit Municipal Police Station (MPS) facilitated a filming showing activity dubbed “Salida Caravan” to End Violence Against Women (VAW) at the Gigaquit National Highschool (GNHS), this town.

The said activity features the viewing of short films on VAW and advocacies to end VAW, lecture on the statistical situation of VAW in the country, and the laws

protecting women’s rights and campaign commitment.

A total of 149 Grade 10 students supervised by their respective class advisers headed by its school principal Anecito Apatan attended the activity.

PAMANA uses the community-driven development strategy made known by the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan – Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS),

which empowers ordinary community residents to identify, implement and sustain development projects, with the support of the local government units.

Projects include roads, day care centers, peace centers, and others that stimulate growth, peace and development in the communities. “ Thank you KalahiCIDSS PAMANA because

According to Wikipedia, Science is a systematized body of knowledge that further creates and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe, which seeks to explain the events of nature in a reproducible way.

Integrating Science in the curriculum, in the class modules and lessons gives our pupils, in its broadest sense, what the world is about, specifically to the things they see, hear and touch, which further gives answers to questions on phenomenon and occurrence that Science can explain.

Same as the Mathematics subject, not all pupils love Science that is why public school teachers initiate teaching methodologies and strategies for the pupils to be hooked and to be interested in the subject; as here comes the big challenge for us, of strengthening science education in the classrooms, in the schools.

Pupils of school age spend two-thirds of their waking lives outside formal schooling, hence as teachers, we uphold to intensify the crucial influences that experiences outside school in which science

is vivid, have on pupils’ beliefs, attitudes and motivation to learn.

Out-of-the-classroom contexts can add to and improve the learning of science in several ways.

Studies show that Science museum visits can lead to improved understanding of such classic school concepts as force and motion, an improvement measured by tests of knowledge before and after visits. Also, Science in hands-on centers, zoos and botanical gardens is often seen as exciting, challenging and uplifting.

Newspapers and magazines offer rich sources of science information including debates about debates about controversial science issues.

Moreover, multi-channel television and the internet have spawned sources of high-quality and attractively packaged information about science and issues of relevance to the pupils. One of the strategy also, is letting the pupils have an opportunity to engage themselves in various science activities such as observing the night sky, small scale experiments with combustion, and artifacts and collections with the stories associated with them, help teach about the ways in which scientific and technological knowledge has been generated and about the social enterprise in which those that engage in the work operate.

Thus, as public school teachers, we should innovate teaching strategies and methodologies in order to strengthen the science education in the schools. In this, we can make our pupils understand and learn science, what science has done to them, what science has brought them and what science can do to them.

Mayor asks NGOs to probe massive fish kill in Lake Mainit

MAINIT, Surigao del Norte-Citing the town lacks technical capability, Mayor Ramon Mondanao has asked nongovernment organizations to investigate what caused the massive fish kill in Lake Mainit.

Tilapias and carps have been dying starting three weeks ago in the fourth largest lake in the country.

The fish kill has affected the livelihood of hundreds of fisher folk that depend on the lake.

Mondano was reacting to the statement of Judith Rojas, assistant regional director of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)Caraga that the agency has not acted on the incident as there was no request from among the local government units.

But Anne Melisa Talavera, officer-in-charge of BFAR’s Regional Fish Health Laboratory told MindaNews in a text message Sunday that they got samples of the fish two weeks ago and these are being studied for analysis in Manila.

With the contradicting statements, the mayor said

it would be better to have an independent body investigate the fish kill.

He said he is hoping NGOs would help while he is searching for institutions that can do laboratory analysis of the samples.

Townsfolk including the mayor himself suspected that the fish kill was caused by mining activities upstream.

Fisher folk like Rolando Zamora of Poblacion in Mainit town recalled the worst fish kill in the lake occurred during the operations of Surigao Resources Consolidated (Suricon) in the 1970s to the early 1990s.

Zamora said it was worse then because almost all of the fish died.

He said he was wondering why the tilapias got so weak that one could easily catch them.

He said they noticed that the gills of the fish turned white as if they were hit by cyanide.

He was also wondering why it was the big ones and not the small ones that were affected.

Most fisherfolk in Alegria and Mainit towns have not gone fishing since the fish kill hit the lake.

Prices of fish like tilapia went down to 40 pesos per kilo.

“Most people would no longer eat the fish because they are afraid of getting poisoned too,” Zamora said.

The fish kill also happened in Kitcharao and Jabonga towns in Agusan del Norte which are also along the lake, affecting the lives of many fisherfolk.

26 PH Eagles bred in captivity in 23 years

John Simbajon, a collector from a lending company told MindaNews that their clients could not pay their “arawan” (daily dues) for their loan because of the fish kill.

“Some of our clients who rely on the lake for their livelihood could not pay their debts. We pity them,” he said.

Polluted Greenstone Resources Corporation, a subsidiary of

Red5 Limited, an Australianbased gold exploration and mining company, is currently mining gold and silver at the abandoned minesite of Suricon in Barangay Siana in Mainit.

Fisherfolk said Greenstone’s operations have polluted Magpayang River the runoff from which would settle in the lake.

“We used to swim and

fetch water for household use there but now it’s so murky.

We don’t even allow our carabaos to bathe there,” a resident named Goliat said..

Faustino Ladaga, a farmer in Pungtod, Alegria recalled the times when water running along Magpayang River was clear.

“I recalled the fun times along the river. We used to swim there because it’s clear, but now its turbid and useless,” he said.

MindaNews sent queries to Simon Leech, mine manager of Greenstone, but he has yet to reply.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) on June 6, 2013, issued a cease-anddesist order on the gold processing operations of Greenstone in Barangay Siana after a tension crack was found on the embankment of its tailings storage facility no. 4.

In January 2015, the MGB allowed Greenstone to resume its gold processing operations after constructing a new tailings storage facility and implementing other remedial measures.

THE MindaNews asked Salvador for a profile of the 26 and found, based on the records that he emailed, that: 19 of the 26 eagles conceived and hatched in captivity are alive and can be found in the Phlippine Eagle Center (PEC) in Malagos; seven died, five at the PEC, two in the wild, months after they were released 19 were conceived by a natural pair, seven by cooperative artificial insemination (CAI); 14 are male, seven female, and five unknown (four died before their sex could be determined; too early to determine for Chick # 26 as it is only a week old) MindaNews also noted from the PEF data that eight pairs involving 14 eagles

produced 26 offsprings, with eagle Junior paired with three eagles, through CAI. The PEC hosts a total of 34 Philippine Eagles, 19 of them bred in captivity.

10 offsprings, 7 offsprings Natural pair Kalayaan and Robinhood produced 10 offsprings between 1999 and 2011: seven of them alive and staying in the PEC: Pangarap and Kaibigan in 1999, Pagmamahal and Maginoo in 2000, Mindanao in 2001, Sambisig in 2002 and Enchanging Kagitingan in 2004. Three of their offsprings died: Macanudo and Chick #15 in 2003; and Chick # 24 in 2011.

Natural pair LDI and Tsai produced seven offsprings between 2003 and 2010: five of them alive: Magilas in 2003, Dakila in 2005,

Pin-pin in 2006, Bighani in 2007, and Imbulog in 2010.

Three of their offsprings died: Chick # 17 in 2004 and Hineleban in 2006.

Hinelaban, then three years old, was released to the wild, inside the protected Mt. Kitangland Mountain Range on October 29, 2009, along with Kalabugao, a rescued and rehabilitated eagle.

Hinelaban was reported missing a month after its release. Tatit Quiblat, then PEF Information officer said an intensive search led to the recovery of the carcass of a male Philippine Eagle in Barangay Lupiagan in Bukidnon on January 15, 2010. It was believed to be Hinelaban’s.

According to PEF records, Imbulog’s status as of December 12, 2015, is “released / alive (PEC).”

First pair, first offspring Eagles Diola and Junior were the first pair to have successfully produced the first Philippine Eagle conceived and hatched in captivity – Pag-asa (Hope) — on January 15, 1992. That same year, on October 25, Pag-asa’s sibling, Pagkakaisa hatched.

The 23-year old Pagasa and Pagkakaisa have remained in their huge cages at the PEC. On February 9 2013, the then 21-year old Pag-asa, paired with Zoom I through CAI, became a father to

Mabuhay.

Kahayag and Junior produced three, also through CAI, two of them alive: Lourdes in 2000 and Geothermica in 2004. Its second offspring, Kabayan, which hatched on November 23, 2002, was released into the forests of Mt. Apo, at the Philippine National Oil Company’s Geothermal Field in Barangay Ilomavis, Kidapwan City, on Earth Day, April 22, 2004.

Asia’s first Kabayan was dubbed Asia’s first captive-bred bird

released into the wild, Kabayan, however, died from electrocution on January 8, 2005 when it perched on a high-voltage cable.

Named after the donor, then Vice President Noli “Kabayan” de Castro, Kabayan survived in the forest for 261 days, although ventured only near the release site. It was found dead about a kilometer from where it was freed.

DSWD facilitates first Municipal Talakayan in Bukidnon Malitbog, Bukidnon -The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through its Kapit Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services - National Community Driven Development (Kalahi CIDSS-NCDDP) together with the Local Government Unit here initiated the first Municipal Talakayan in the municipality, November 23, 2015.

Anchored on the theme “Measuring and Learning

Together Towards Results”, the Municipal Talakayan was participated by officials of the local government unit, barangay officials, Kalahi-CIDSS volunteers, and the Malitbog community.

Alcala, DA Secretary, he expressed his utmost appreciation for the ingenuity, sacrifices and perseverance of the honorees, who are major propellers of agricultural development as well as commendable persons worthy to be emulated.

Consequently, the most important question to ask these candidates now is this: in this short span of six years, what are you going to do to lift our people from poverty, stop criminality and corruption, and put the Philippines on the road to real change?

The presidencies that have come and gone since 1986 have shown us that there is not much that any president can do within a period of six years to really transform the country. Aquino, Ramos, Estrada, Arroyo have all gone, and the current Aquino will also be gone in a few days, yet we have remained poor and divisive despite claims by each of these presidents that they succeeded to turn around the country.

And from all indications, whoever gets elected in 2016 will be another failure. No change substantial enough to propel this country towards economic boom had been introduced by anyone of them, and the incoming presidency would appear to be no exception.

My take is this: the next president, side by side with all the grandiose plans for the development of the Philippines, should strive to entice Filipinos to return to God by a daily reading of, and obedience to, the Bible or any other Holy Book for those who are not Christians.

This is not going to be an impossible or a novel task. Even now, the judicial branch of government, led by the Supreme Court, is now inculcating spiritually and deeper faith in God by daily recitations, in all courts of the Philippines, of an ecumenical prayer which recognizes a Supreme Being who can touch hearts of litigants to aspire for truth, justice, peace, and righteousness.
