Piñol assures support for Organic Agriculture CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – “Ako mismo ang bebenta ng mga produkto ninyo,” says Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol as he committed himself to be the sales head for organic and naturally grown products, before more than a thousand delegates during the recent conduct of the 13th National Organic Agriculture (OA) Congress, held in Laoag City, recently.

Bearing the theme: “Organiko a Wagas: Tatao Ken Aglawlaw Nadur-as (Organic Way: For People, Environmental Sustainability and Progress), the confab focused on putting premium the marching order of the Duterte administration of

providing available and accessible food with emphasis on sustainability, robustness, resiliency and food safety for everyone.

Accordingly, a series of activities was staged, including the conduct of consultations, awarding ceremony for the OA achievers, cooking contest, plenary and breakout sessions for the research, marketing and starter groups, and the conduct of an organic trade exhibit.

In particular, the DA chief noted his appreciation for the various organic and naturally grown products displayed at the trade fair, but challenged the exhibitors and the organic advocates

ORO QUIETA CIT Y – Around 200 farmer-graduates from Oroquieta City and the municipality of Aloran graduated from the School-on-the-Air (SOA) Program on Livestock Production, Meat Safety and Processing of the Department of Agriculture– Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO 10).

Following the completion of the three-month long program, a graduation ceremony was held on December 2, 2016 at the Provincial Cultural and Farmers Training Center, Misamis Occidental.

The department’s Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section (RAFIS) along with the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) of Misamis

Occidental spearheaded the SOA Livestock Program.

It ran from August to November 2016, where the farmer enrollees were given quizzes and a final exam to measure their knowledge and determine the outstanding performers from the program, which aimed to guide the farmers on the proper livestock management and for them to generate more income.

In his message, Provincial Agriculturist Dennis C. Leopoldo thanked the efforts of the farmers and expressed his hopes that they have understood and soon adapt to the new technologies in the livestock industry through the SOA program.

Lanao del Sur holds Food Security Summit MARAWI CITY -- The 1st Lanao del Sur Food Security Summit was held in the Social Hall, Provincial Capitol, Marawi City on December 5, 2016.

BSP simplifies guidelines on establishment of branches Consistent with the BSP’s policy of promoting a competitive banking environment and ease of doing business, the Monetary Board (MB) approved the amendments to the guidelines on the establishment of branches to provide banks with more flexibility in ex-

panding their branching network to strategic locations.

The new regulation removed the use of theoretical capital as well as the combined capital requirement tied to geographic location in evaluating branch applications since the branch network size and location

of head office are already embedded in the latest minimum capital requirement for banks.

The MB also reaffirmed the general thrust of allowing banks to establish branches anywhere in the Philippines, including in the cities previously considered

as restricted areas, namely, Makati, Mandaluyong, Manila, Paranaque, Pasay, Pasig, Quezon and San Juan.

The move is aligned with the initiatives on banking system liberalization which include the removal of the branch moratorium in restricted areas and the gradual

lifting of the suspension on the establishment of new domestic banks.

Anchored on their overall business model and strategic direction, smaller banks may now establish branches in Metro Manila subject to higher capitalization and special licensing fee if said

branches are to be located in the cities previously considered as restricted areas.

The policy initiative is aligned with the BSP’s banking reform agenda that is anchored on the promotion of sound risk management systems and Financial Stability.

The country’s terrible traffic congestion problem was also discussed and the President expressed his frustrations over the moves of Congress for not acting fast enough to give him special power to tackle the traffic situation.

There’s no movement at all, and he told Filipinos that he is sorry but his government is trying to overcome the challenges.

Mining operations and the appointment of Environment Secretary Gina Lopez was also discussed.

The President said his office is always receptive to any abuse of authority or if they exceeded the normal limitations of their discretion. He added that he will see to it that everything is fair.

He insisted that companies must follow the Canadian or Australian mining practices, but said that there will always be a “trade-off ” somehow because mining operations affect nature and environment.PND
