Jica expert hails COWD’s ability to recover quickly

THE highest official of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Philippine Office hopes the disaster resiliency built into the rehabilitated facilities of the Cagayan de Oro City Water District (COWD) damaged by Tropical Storm Sendong would serve as a model for other water districts in the country.

Takahiro Sasaki, chief representative for JICA’s Philippine Office, lauded COWD’s pro-active stance during the turnover ceremony of the deed of donation held at a local hotel Thursday (December 12).

“My congratulations to COWD for considering disaster resilience as an important component in this project, and I hope you will continue to adopt, be proactive and also implement this kind of strategy for the rest of your water system,” Mr. Sasaki said during his formal turnover speech. “More importantly, I hope that this will set a standard for making public facilities and resources disaster-resilient in the country.”

Puregold Price Club Inc. President Leonardo B. Dayao has vowed to provide business opportunities to local producers and traders in the region by patronizing local products that Puregold can sell in its more than 200 stores nationwide.

Puregold, has opened Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, its most highly anticipated flagship outlet in Cagayan de Oro City--the hypermarket brand’s 5th store in Mindanao along Lapasan highway.

“Of course, there is standard mechandising that we have to follow; but here in Cagayan de Oro, we have

to look at local products that we can sell in Puregold. We would like to sell products locally produce because we want to provide business opportunities to local producers and local traders,” Mr. Dayao told Mindanao Daily News in an interview during the opening of Puregold-CDO. OROQUIETA City, Misamis Occidental––The provincial government of Misamis Occidental (PGMO) launched a Christmas Parol/ Lantern Display Contest to raise funds for the Typhoon Yolanda survivors in the Visayan region.

With the central theme of “Pag-inambitay, Paghinigugmaay, Atong Kalipay!

(Sharing and Loving: Our Happiness),” the contest is open to individuals, organizations, business establishments, schools, etc. in the province.

Governor Herminia M. Ramiro said participants of the contest are encouraged to donate a minimum of P300, as registration fee, all proceeds of which will be donated to the survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda and to use materials at their expense and choice.

The main body of the display entry must be not less than one meter long and not more than three meters wide and displayed at the designated areas identified

CAGAYAN de Oro City––A British national was invited for arrested after policemen recovered more than a kilo of dried marijuana (cannabis) leaves in his compound in the island province of Camiguin Saturday morning.

The arresting police officers said Christopher Millard, 36, of the United Kingdom, was believed high after reportedly smoking large amount of marijuana in his house in City Lumad in Mambajao, Camiguin on Friday night.

Marijuana or cannabis is illegal in the Philippines.

The mere possession of marijuana violates the Anti-

Dangerous Drug Act which is punishable by law.

Senior Police Officer Proceso Badajos of the Mambajao police said that a neighbor reported to the police Friday night of an altercation at the compound of Millar, prompting the police to investigate.

Badajos said that Manilyn Villegas, 23, Millar’s live-in partner, told the police that Millard threatened to kill her and led the police to recover a handful of marijuana in their house.

Illegal firecrackers task force sets MOA signing

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Establishing a stronger position for the Regional Task Force on Illegal Firecrackers, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing is set on Monday, December 16 at the city hall, enjoining as well the support of the

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno.

The Task Force is an interagency advocacy, partnership and cooperation to boost the campaign against illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in the region.

This was conceptualized in early 2009 by the Department of Health (DOH) region 10 in response to

the rising occurrence of firecracker related accidents.

The agency issued a regional special order to team up with key government offices and media establishments to augment the campaign.

Over the years it continued to conduct several activities like information dissemination campaigns,

monitoring of commercial establishments selling illegal firecrackers and assisting the PNP in the confiscation and destruction of seized items.

The ceremonial singing on Monday will formalize and renew the members’ commitment to the campaign.

She answered: “Oh, that’s the money I made from selling all the other handkerchiefs.”

Well, that’s definitely an interesting way to keep peace in your marriage, and make $25,000 at the same time! But that husband probably wondered what he had done to make his wife angry so many times! He’d always thought they had a close marriage.

Local champions compete for Pasko na CdeO singing contest

TEN contestants from Cagayan de Oro and the nearby Misamis Oriental clashed for Pasko na CdeO Battle of Local Champions Minus 1 singing contest hosted and organized by Radio Philippine Network-Cagayan de Oro (RPN-CDO) headed by its station manager, Ms. Gin B. Ms. Serihijos also added that there are more RPN programs that would be coming up. One of that is the quartet category for the contest that they will be introducing, aside from trio and duet categories.

Village leader, daughter insist slain farmer not NPA

MACO, Compostela Valley––A barangay captain here debunked military allegations that the farmer it killed was a member of New People’s Army (NPA).

Edgardo Reambonanza, barangay captain of Malamodao, said that Pedro Tinga, was a farmer, a civilian and one of his constituents.

“He is a leader of the tribal council, an active member of the community church, active in the community, that could prove his innocence,” he told Davao Today on Wednesday.

Reambonanza reacted strongly to the claim of Captain Alberto Caber, spokesperson of the Armed Forces’ Eastern Mindanao Command that Tinga was killed during an encounter together with three other NPAs. “Ako mka-testify na sibilyan sya, kay since 1967 naa nako diri hangtod sa akong pangidaron karon.

Mismo mga silingan kaila sa iyaha. Maayo siyang tao, walay kaaway (I can testify that he is a civilian, I lived here since 1967 up to now. The community knows him, he is a good person, and no enemies),” Reambonanza said.

tification”. “ These supporting documents including his voter’s ID will help in clearing Pedro Tinga’s name,” Reambonanza added.

Livelihood and Security The Tinga family also wanted to clear the name of its breadwinner.

“Mahadlok mi ma pagan kay ang nagakalat diri NPA daw si papa, mahadlok mi para sa among seguridad (We are afraid that the rumours spreading is that our father is an NPA, we are afraid with our security),” said Marivic Macasag, daughter of the victim.

Macasag told Davao Today that his father was not a member of the NPA.

She said that “when his father is not in their house, they could find him in their farm.”

The family of Tinga depends on the peanut and rice crops that were about to be harvested.

Right now, Macasag said, “we couldn’t still go to the farm because we are uncertain of whether or not the Army are still there”.

their farms for the meantime.

He said that “military presence is visible every now and then”. He said he could not ascertain that there would be no outbreak of violence as he disclosed that “our barangay is also visited by NPAs”.

Reambonanza said they were not scared of the presence of the military “but we are scared of what will happen if the two forces will meet in our community.”

Kidapawan City govt commends blue guard for honesty

KIDAPAWAN City––It pays to be honest.

This was proven by a lowly paid security guard who turned over to a local radio station P15,200 cash he found at a roadside here last week.

And because of his honesty, the Kidapawan City government presented a plaque of recognition and offered employment to the blue guard in the local government unit if he qualifies.

Radio Station DXND interviewed Emerold Obatay, security guard of Mercury Drug Store-Kidapawan branch, and asked him how he found the money and why he was turning it over to the radio station to be announced so real owners could claim it.

“Who doesn’t need money? I need money too but this is not mine and in no way it will become mine,” Obatay told DXND Radyo Bida.

Obatay said he and his wife are yet to recover from the pain of losing a dear daughter due to sickness and had to pay debts for her medication.

“I badly need money, like anyone of us, but taking what is not mine is not right. I am poor but I have dignity and I am honest, I have to return it to its rightful owner and I have no way to know who the real owner was so I came over to your radio station,” Obatay said.

Convinced that what Obatay did was a very noble thing, Kidapawan City Councilor Gregory Yarra has sponsored a resolution to recognize Obatay’s good gesture.

“What he did was worth emulating, we should recognize his honesty,” Yarra said in sponsoring the resolution.

Summoned by the city council to appear and say something during regular SP session Thursday, Obatay told the legislators he was tempted at first to keep the money as nobody saw he found it.

“But the good thing in me prevailed so I decided to return the money. Besides, the owner deserved to have his or her hard earned money back,” Obatay said in between sobs.

“I was humbled by this recognition, I hope other Kidapawenios would do the same thing,” Obatay said.

The technical assistance included the provision of equipment such as pumps, generators, water meters, data loggers, chlorination facility, power cables, a biosafety cabinet and a short term expert to expedite the full restoration of COWD’s operations and provision of safe water supply in Cagayan de Oro City.

He said they will assign additional medical teams during the athletic meets to properly monitor the condition of the athletes.

City and provincial division meets are currently ongoing in some parts of the region, which comprises the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, North Cotabato and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato.

The regional games, which is dubbed Cotabato Regional Athletic Association Meet, is scheduled on February 12-15 next year.

“LWUA in cooperation with PAWAD, has started talking about strengthening further LWUA’s capability to react during disasters,” he disclosed. “LWUA’s Disaster Assistance Reaction Team (DART) has been in the forefront every time disaster occurs. We are contemplating of involving PAWAD (Phil. Association of Water Districts) so that reaction time can be faster.”

“LWUA as the agency mandated by the government in the development of water systems nationwide, will always be there to assist all water districts that need its assistance. We have again proven the success of

the LWUA-Water District Partnership,” he added.

For his part, Mr. Sasaki hopes the success of the COWD rehabilitation project and its integration of disaster-resiliency not only serve as a model, but also a beacon of hope for the other areas of the country like Zamboanga, Bohol and the Visayas which were recently ravaged by similar disasters.
