Tianteh Temple followers celebrate Chinese New Year

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Over 1,000 members of the Tianteh Temple in Cagayan de Oro City gathered on Thursday midnight to mark the Chinese Lunar New Year and to celebrate the Feast of the Maitreya Buddha.

City Councilor Atty.

Leon Gan said the followers lighted incense, gave fruit offerings and prayed in thanksgiving for the past year and for the new year.

Gan added that they also prayed in honor of the Maitreya Buddha’s feast day.

He said the Maitreya Buddha is also known as the “lucky Buddha” and the See temple, page 11

CAGAYAN de Oro City– –A member of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit in Misamis Oriental was killed Thursday evening by a still unknown gunman.

The militiaman, identified as Rudy Ayuma, was reported to have been present with his brother during the New People’s Army attack over a month ago at Lantad, Balingasag.

Ayuma’s borther, also a CAFGU regular, has remained missing since the attack. The NPA has blamed the military for the killing of Ayuma.

Capt. Christian Uy, spokesman for the 4th Infantry Division based in Cagayan de Oro City, said the NPA pronouncement is only an allegation.

Uy said they will look into the report and cooperate with the police in the investigation. The NPA alleged that Ayuma was held for a month by the military in suspicion that he was an NPA informer.

“I don’t have details of his whereabouts at that time,” Uy said, adding that the reprot could be just propaganda information by the NPA.

Villanueva mayor gives updates on power plant, relocation plan

CAGAYAN de Oro City––Mayor Julio T. Uy of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, said workers of the FDC power plant to be constructed at a coastal area has resumed surveying and other pre-engineering works after two weeks of heavy rains.

Uy said the municipal government supports the power plant in providing manpower for employment and in maintaining peace and order in the area.

He said some 1,000 workers will be employed during the construction phase which will take some two years to complete.

Uy said the employment will be done through the municipal Public Employment Service Office.

He added that the once the plant is operational there will be less workers needed but monitoring of conditions set under the Environment Clearance Certificate will continue in the barangay, sectoral and municipal levels.

The FDC power plant sits on an 84-hectare property.

In another development, Uy said the municipal government is now looking for a relocation site for residents in barangay Looc affected by the recent ground breaks caused by heavy rains in the past two weeks.

Uy said the land area is soft and that the Mines and Geosciences Burea has declared the area a danger zone.

He said the residents will no longer be allowed to stay in the area.

Some 20 households are affected and will have to be relocated.

Uy said some of the land owners have decided to plant bamboos and fruit trees in the unstable soil.

BRIGADA ESKWELA, A CAMPAIGN

Brigada Eskwela is a yearly activity of every school community which is done two weeks before the opening of classes. All schools nationwide are encouraged to have this Brigada Eskwela in order to prepare the school for the new school year. However, with the limited resources of the school and the government, Brigada Eskwela is still made possible because of the help of the internal and external stakeholders of education in the respective community.

During this maintenance week, everybody is expected to work hand in hand in order to prepare the classrooms doing minor repair, fixing electrical installations and making the school ground clean and ready for the children. The

teachers , pupils and parents are the main actors of this Brigada Eskwela, since they are the internal and external stakeholders of the school. Attendance are made daily to those who voluntarily offer their time, money and effort just to fix everything in the school in preparation of the opening of the classes. Aside from the manpower resources that the internal stakeholders have extended, there are also other donations in terms of financial and material resources from the external stakeholders that are made available to the school.

Therefore , let us join hands in strengthening the implementation of this Brigada Eskwela Program for this year and for the years onward.

MES Garners Triple Victory

Merangeran Elementar y School (MES) one of the nineteen (19) schools in Quezon 1 District, Bukidnon garnered triple victory last December 2013. It was the pride of four school when our principal Mrs Daisy Uayan won her Prepared Speech in the Regional Communication Festival in Cagayan de Oro City last December 11 -12, 2013. Mrs Uayan as Division representative in the Prepared Speech School Head Category bet with other contestants in the whole Region X. Another victory was acquired by the school when Mrs. Daisy Uayan awarded as Most outstanding Principal and Mrs. Fifeliza Remoroza a Grade One teacher awarded as Most Outstanding Teacher

in the Division BANTULA awards held in Impasug-ong, Bukidnon last December 18, 2013.

Army captures BIFF camp in Maguindanao COTABATO City––Government forces on Saturday hoisted the Philippine flag at the center of the main camp of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Barangay Ganta in Shariff Saidona town in Maguindanao after five days of sporadic air and ground assaults.

commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, and Col. Edgar Gonzales, chief of the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade, hoisted the national flag in the middle of the more or less seven-hectare BIFF camp.

After the government forces sang the national anthem, Gonzales and Pangilinan led in offering prayers

for the fallen guerrillas and a soldier.

Gonzales said his troops, who first entered the camp, recovered about 3,000 rounds of ammunition of various calibers and 300 kilos of blasting chemicals and components for making improvised explosive devices.

Quoting local officials,

Gonzales said the camp had been used by renegades (BIFF) of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front as “springboard” for its bombing and extortion activities in the towns of Maguindanao and North Cotabato.

announced that we got 2.36 which is a maturing level of SBM practice, I felt a hodgepodge of emotions I don’t know if I had to shout, to laugh or to cry but one thing I was sure at that time was I could already sleep pretty.

But aside from expecting a good slumber that was also a moment of relief to all of us because upon knowing that we’re given the task as chairman of an SBM principle. We already felt worried and anxious since we lack deeper knowledge about these School-Based Management Program. The job is like a yoke which had been installed on our shoulder. The long preparation, the long hours of studying, pondering and working for documents that we could used to support the SBM principle was so tedious and grudging.

Though, many of the pertinent papers are already there but we still have to go over it and identify as to where and what

principles they belong. We had sacrificed not just one Saturday and Sunday, not just one evening to finished our papers but more. Our anxiety is apparently shown in our faces ,furrows appeared on our forehead and our eyes revealed our sleepless nights .

Yet, those hard times were also unforgettable. The camaraderie we had , the teamwork and the laughter shared amidst the busy working environment uplift the spirits of each one of us .

The ever supportive stakeholders were also there ,they generously shared their time and helped, through providing us the needed records or documents of their program they have initiated and implemented in the school which were geared towards improved learning outcome.

Both internal and external stakeholders really took part in the success of the Regional Assessment on their SBM Level of Practice.

New Sets of Computer Delivered in Tangculan Elementry School 29,2014 Wednesday.

The two computer technicians after installing the computers gave us some orientation on how to operate and handle this computer and operation. The computers that installed were the following: Two projector with screen, one mother board monitor and six monitors for pupils. I was so crucial in delivering this computer because of the road condition especially during the first day of school it was raining due to low pressure area that last almost three weeks.. So, it was carried by motorcycle called habal-habal because the only way of transportation during rainy season.We were all excited installing this said computers that will bring new knowledge in technology among pupils and teachers.

Mr. Gregorio Lauronal Jr., the secretary of BUKTRAMCO, introduced the background and presented the financial status of the institution, where in the Aflatoun members can save their money. Mr. Teofredo Soquino, the manager of BUKTRAMCO assures the financial stability of the cooperative of the present management and encourages teachers to facilitate to the pupils on what they have learned from the seminar.

It is laudable that the sponsoring Aboitiz companies have given independence to the scholars to choose their favoured courses.

The Aboitiz companies set guidelines to screen students who deser ve the scholarship assistance. Mostly, the recipients have high academic achievement. Those coming from poor families are favoured more as economic status weighs higher in the selection process. Tests during interviews are also, conducted.

From the year 2000 when the noble program of the Aboitiz compa-

nies was conceived, 26 graduates were already produced and are now working here and abroad.

What is more appreciable is the fact that other scholar graduates were absorbed by Hedcor itself.

It is inspiring that aside from the collegiate scholarship program, Hedcor gives stipends to achievers. This is aside from construction of school buildings and refurbished classrooms that Aboitiz donates to impoverish communities from time to time .

Hedcor had just turned over ‘Silid Pangarap’ – a learning center - to Davao this year, in partnership with the Aklat, Gabay, Aruga tungo sa Pag-angat at Pag-asa (AGAPP) Foundation.

How to fix Laguindingan ASAP

Stakeholders who depend on the Laguindingan Airport are appalled at the news that the Korean contractor who is installing its landing lights and navigational aids has petitioned the Department of Transportation and Communications for a five month extension which if approved, would mean the urgently needed equipment would be in place

by November, 2014 at best.

Urgent doesn’t quite cut it in describing the chaos caused by flight cancellations at the spanking new airport opened with much fanfare by the President himself last June 15, 2013 over the strident opposition of the business sector.

“We cannot allow an extension until November, 2014,” said a former official of the Oro Chamber. “This will further affect our competitiveness and disrupt all planned conventions and conferences in the city.

We cannot even count the impact to our visitors who have been inconvenienced by the cancellations; likely, they will shelve future plans of going to Cagayan de Oro or Region 10 at some point in the future.”

The facts speak for themselves.

Flight statistics at the Laguindingan Airport complied by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) show that for the 10-day period alone covering January 10-22, 2014 some 304 commer-

Using the P1.5 million per round trip average operating expense of an Airbus A320 on the CDO-MLACDO route benchmark, airlines total losses for the 304 cancelled flights were approximately P228-million, affecting some 22,800 passenger or an average of 1,800 daily over the 12-day period.

This is about the same amount of damage caused by TS Agaton and its aftermath to infrastructure (P273.62 million) and agriculture (P253.49 million) reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) last Jan. 30, 2014.

The Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) conservatively estimates the cancelled flights cost Cagayan de Oro alone approximately P20-M daily in actual and opportunity costs.

“This still doesn’t count indirect losses. A lot of

business opportunities were lost, meetings cancelled, additional travel expense to Davao or Butuan for many, rebooking charges for international flights, new bookings for many who needed to have other options, plus a lot of other intangibles,” said a former chamber executive who preferred to remain anonymous.

The yearend report of the Department of Transportation and Communication on the Air Navigation System and Support Facilities (ANSSF) project component of the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP) states that due to the June opening of the airport, the contractor is restricted to working only during night time, prompting them to request the DOTC for an extension of five (5) months. In short, had government not insisted on its premature opening, the ANSSF would have been in place and operational by June this year.

But there is a way to fast track the installation of the urgently needed equipment if only the national government has the political will

to undo this mess: a supplemental contract which would provide incentives for the contractor and allow it to field additional workers and longer working hours.

Thus, work can immediately start after 5:00 p.m. (or after the last flight) until just before the first flight the next day; and more personnel can be deployed for the civil works and for those jobs which can be done off the runway during daytime.

The contract amount for the ANSSF supply project awarded to SKY-KR Consortium was P411,561,000.00 or 32 percent lower against the ABC of P609, 258,191.41 and 42 percent lower than the NEDA approved cost of P 708,137,138.00.

Ergo, a supplemental contract providing incentives not exceeding the original NEDA approved cost of P708.14 million or even the ABC of P609.26-million can be considered a viable option given the economic losses now being incurred by the people of Northern Mindanao with the flight cancellations and loss of night and early morning flights.

This would also be fair to the contractor since the Original C onstruction Schedule of 15 months from March 2013 to June 2014 was based on unrestricted working time condition.

LBC branch in Zamboanga Sibugay robbed again

A M B OA N G A SIBUGAY – Two gunmen barged into a branch of a cargo forwarder LBC in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga Sibugay and carted over half a million pesos, police said.

Police said the two assailants fled on a motorcycle after the robbery which occurred at noontime Thursday in the town of Ipil.

“Initial investigation disclosed that personnel of the LBC branch were busy attending their clients when suddenly two unidentified men armed with caliber .45 pistol entered and at gunpoint declared the heist and forcibly took the cash money amounting to P513,871 and fled towards

unknown direction onboard their single motorcycle,” police said in a report.

Last November, the same branch was also held up by three gunmen who managed to take away some P380,000 in cash.

The branch was about to close when the gunmen barged and announced the robbery and threatened to shoot Jemiliza Agasita, the cash custodian, if she will not surrender the money.

The gunmen also escaped on a motorcycle after the heist.

Prior to that, two armed men also robbed another LBC branch in Buug town in Zamboanga Sibugay and escaped with over P180,000 in loot.

The cargo for warder was manned by only three employees - Rutcher Pagayon, Allen Capas and Palen Banseloy – when the gunmen barged and forced them to open the vault. (Mindanao Examiner)

Rebels tending to farm amidst firefight

AVAO CITY - A breakaway Moro guerrilla group in Central Mindanao said the main bulk of its forces were out of harm’s way of government military artillery shellings and that its forces were divided into engaging in gunbattles or planting and indoctrination of its mass base.

Ab u M i s r y Ma m a , spokesperson of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) told Davao Today in a phone interview on Thursday night that “while some of our forces are engaged in gunfights with government troops, they are also busy planting palay and conducting Islamic orientation” within their controlled areas.

“Wala kaming ginagawang masama. Nagtatanim kami ng mga palay, nagsagawa kami ng mga Islamic orientation (We are not committing any wrongdoings. Here we are planting rice and conducting Islamic orientation among villagers),” said Mama.

The rebel spokesperson did not reveal their location but said that they were far from where the Philippine Army had been training their cannons since the offensive against them started.

Mama said they were able to move away their forces from the direction of the goverment military operation, and claimed that they got wind of an Army “massive operation” seven days before the actual skirmishes started last Monday.

They belie reports of heavy casualties.

“There was a shelling of 105 and 155 (howitzers), airplane dropping bombs and helicopter attacks for 3 days. There only 7 of us who got wounded,” he said.

The Army claimed to have recovered at least 40 bodies of BIFF fighters, including a minor, in its operations which started

5:00 am of Monday and that should have ended at 5:00 am today, according to 6th ID Commander, Brigadier General Romeo Gapuz in a television interview.

“As of the moment, because of the skirmishes that have been happening, we are planning to put-up a request of additional 72 hours for us to finish,” said Gapuz adding that their request has to be approved by the peace panel.

Mama said they were prepared to attack anytime if one of them “got killed” but mostly they only take “defensive actions” when government troops reach areas where they also have “forces” or when they enter rebel “territories.”

“But when we are the one going conducting the operation, we send emissaries to civilians like last time when we attacked soldiers.

We tell civilians to tell the soldiers to leave or else we will attack them. If the will not leave, we tell civilians to leave instead so they will not get caught in the cross fire,” said Mama.

In September 2013 the BIFF said it warned that they would attack government troops and installations in the province of North Cotabato and called on civilians to evacuate.

The group attacked the towns of Midsayap on Septemeber 24 and Tulunan on September 25 which forced more than 3,000 residentsto evacuate.

Government authorities who appeared to have been caught off-guard linked the

attack to the then ongoing “Zamboanga siege” staged by forces loyal to Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding Chairman Nur Misuari. The BIFF denied the allegation.

The BIFF was formed sometime after Ameril Umra Kato, who led the MILF’s 105th Base Command in the Maguindanao area, declined to yield to MILF directive to give up his post and head another non-military post in the MILF. The move was seen as an MILF action against him and his command after the government pressured the MILF to yield its three base commanders to account for their attacks in 2008 in the towns of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte.

These attacks happened immediately after the Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional the memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain, which was supposed to complete the round of agreements leading to a comprehensive political settlement with the MILF. With the fresh government offensive, Mama branded the Army “terrorists” and the “true spoilers” of the peace negotiations.

“They planted roadside bombs, sniped at our soldiers, took school teachers as hostages, and in one instance, even beheaded a civilian captive. A few days ago, in the midst of the fighting, they commandeered a private vehicle and forcibly used it as a roadblock,” Miriam Coronel-Ferrer chairperson of the government panel negotiating peace with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, said in an emailed statement to the media.

Coronel said that prior to the conduct of the operations both government and the MILF have “ensured the safety of civilians in surrounding areas” and that relief provisions have been on standby “to meet the basic needs of those who have been temporarily displaced.”

Coronel said the “ongoing military operations were geared at degrading the BIFF’s capability to continue to cause harm to the government forces, civilians and the peace process.”

Mama said that their stand may be the same with other groups pursuing an independent bangsamoro (moro land) as such that a “merging” may indeed happen.

-oooJESUS IS THE NAME OF GOD: I have a question: what is the name of God? This is quite tricky, because many will say that God is known by many names and they would be correct. Among these names are those found in the Book of Revelation, namely, the seven names that were used to address the seven churches in Asia, as well as the names given to Him in the Old Testament (“the God who commands armies”, and the like).

But then, is there any specific name by which God is named, by Himself of course? Some may answer that it is “Jesus”, because that is the name given to the boy that was conceived and given birth to by the virgin (Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6 and Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 1:31), and this maybe right because, indeed, Jesus is God. But then, even Jesus recognized that God has His own Name. What is this

Name of God that Jesus, our God and Savior, recognized?

This is found in Jesus’ prayer in John 17: 11-12, which says: “Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me…”

Clearly, the name of God is Jesus!

2 journalists, soldiers hurt in Maguindanao IED blast; Army hunting down suspects

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao––The military here has launched a massive manhunt against two suspected members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) who set off an improvised roadside bomb Saturday morning in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguidanao that hurt two journalists and 10 soldiers and civilians.

Army Major Dante Gania, 6th Infantry Division civilmilitary operations chief, said the blast occurred at about 7:45 a.m. in Barangay Lower Salbu, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguidanao.

G an i a i d e nt i f i e d t h e wounded journalists as TV-5 reporter Jeff Caparas and cameraman Adrian Bulatao who were on board a TV network vehicle along with an Army truck when the improvised bomb exploded.

Both are in stable condition but sustained multiple shrapnel injuries, according to Gania.

Col. Dickson Hermoso, speaking for the 6th Infantry Division, said the convoy, composed of 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion soldiers, a civilian pick-up truck and the TV-5 vehicle, was heading toward Datu Piang when the incident happened.

Hermoso said two helicopters took the victims and airlifted them to Shariff Aguak where the Maguindanao provincial hospital is located.

The IED blast was believed part of the diversionary tactics of the BIFF members who suffered heavy casualties in fighting with government forces that began Monday.

At least 52 BIFF members and a soldier were killed and about 30 others wounded in the sporadic skirmishes.

Hermoso said soldiers were running after two BIFF members who were seen by witnesses as among those who planted a bag at a roadside and detonated as the convoy was passing by. Following the incident, more checkpoints were put up in Datu Saudi Ampatuan and Datu Piang, especially along the routes leading to military camps to avoid similar incident. (PNA)
