Evening flights for Misor airport available sooner
THE Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) will soon accept evening flights for the Laguindingan airport in Misamis Oriental. This after all air navigation and airfield ground lighting systems of the airport were installed and tested. “We are happy to announce that the Laguindingan Airport is now equipped for night landing operations. We hope to activate evening flights by the end of November in order to give the public more flight options as well as to decongest the airport during the day,” DOTC Secretary Jun Abaya said. In line with certain policies and procedures of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and CAAP, officials from DOTC and CAAP are conducting a joint inspection from November 4 to 6 for safety purposes in order to double-check on any possible system defects before they are put to use. CAAP will then prepare the standard guidelines for arrival and departure procedures, for compliance bythe airlines involved. After this, CAAP and the airlines will organize flight schedules to ensure orderly operations and to prevent air traffic and terminal congestion. DAVAO City––Student leader Rendell Ryan Edpan Cagula, president of the University Student Council of the University of the Philippines-Mindanao in 20112012, former Davao City coordinator of the League of Filipino Students (LFS) and Southern Mindanao coordinator of the Kabataan party list, has returned home after an 11-month absence, in a casket. The 23-year-old Cagula, popularly known by his nickname, “Perper,” was among three persons dubbed in an Army press release as “NPA bandits killed in Sarangani encounter” between elements of the Army’s 27th Infantry Battalion and the New People’s Army (NPA) at around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, November 4, in Sitio Tubac, Barangay Nomoh, Maasim town. His mother, Marina, told MindaNews she and her son Kenneth identified Perper in a funeral parlor in Maitum, Sarangani on Thursday and transported him to this city in the early hours of Friday. Marina says she does not know if her son was, indeed, a member of the NPA, as claimed by the military. “Nagtudlo man daw to siya’g mga Lumad” (He said he was teaching Indigenous
Peoples). She said Perper, who would phone her when he was in an area with “signal,” loved talking about how happy he was sharing his learnings with Lumads (Indigenous Peoples), and how he was learning so much from them as well. Perper took up BA Anthropology at UP Mindanao and was six units short of finishing his course when he left the university. His father, Joy, told MindaNews that when his son left home in early December last year, “humanon man daw niya iyang thesis” (he said he was finishing his thesis). Thesis is not a requirement in the BA Anthro course but its equivalency is Field School and in the field school in Agusan that Perper attended, he excelled, according to one of his teachers. His classmates and teachers say Perper was “maayo gyud” (really good) as a student and as a leader. Marina attests to her son’s devotion to his studies. She would sometimes sleep at night and wake up in the morning to find her son still reading his books. Joy said Perper didn’t come home for Christmas and New Year last year but finally communicated with them by phone in February. No to Geology, yes to Anthropology

Joy, a retired geologic aide from the Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau (MGB) in Surigao and later Davao, and presently working in a nickel mining operations in Tawi-tawi, told his former colleagues at the MGB who came to the wake at the Collado funeral parlor Sunday night that he had hoped his son would take up Geology because he could borrow books for him from them and it would be easy for his son to find a job after graduation. But even before Perper finished secondary education at the Daniel R. Agui-
naldo National High School (DRAHS), Joy said he was already bent on pursuing Anthropology at UP Mindanao. Joy recalled how he once told his son that he was informed he was picketing the MGB office, and reminded him he used to work there. But his son went on with his activism, tackling issues in and out of the university, and was, as the father described him, “pirmi frontliner” (always a frontliner). Leader RR, Perper’s nickname at home (he became “Perper” while at the DRAHS), had
always been a frontliner since he was little, said Joy. “Lider gyud na sya” (He was really a leader), said Marina. Even in death, Perper was still a leader. Before he was identified and claimed by his mother, he was tagged “Cadaver No. 1” in the military reports while the 28-year-old Johnny Wata Camag of Magsaysay in Davao del Sur was “Cadaver No. 2.” The gensantimes.com on November 6 reported that “the slain NPA rebels were identified as Rendel Ryan Cagula, reportedly a resident of Bago Gallera in
Davao City; Johnny Camag of Magsaysay in Davao del Sur; and Fredi Ayog of Islome in Maasim.” Marina presented her son’s school ID when she claimed his cadaver, according to a military report. Perper was president of the University Student Council at UP-Min from 2011 to 2012. He also served as Davao City coordinator of the LFS. Last year, he was visible in several protest actions against tuition increases as well as in the series of anti-pork barrel rallies, as regional convenor of the Kabataan party list. On September 5 last year, Perper was at the press conference of Youth Act Now Davao alliance, which Kabataan convened. The alliance called for “the abolition of pork barrel fund, including the presidential pork barrel, and the rechanneling of the pork barrel fund to education and other social services” and urged schools in Davao City to “make a stand supporting the call to abolish the pork barrel, and mobilize the whole school-community (for the) September 11 nationwide protest.” “Happy there” Perper continued to communicate with his mother in Davao City and his father in Tawi-tawi, by text or call, but would not tell them where he was. 3 died in Oro shootout despite heightened alert By GERRY LEE GORIT Correspondent

WO members of the Akyat Bahay Gang and a security guard died in a shoutout on wee hours Tuesday inside a highend subdivision in Cagayan de Oro City.
Senior Police Officer 1 Zona Fabria of Carmen Police Precinct said the shoutout between the robbers and security guards of the subdivision happened at 12:30 after midnight. Fabria identified the slain robbers as Adelmar Falconet and his cousin, Ben. She said 26-year-old Alexander Busbos, one of the guards on duty, of Compostela Valley, died instantly after the shootout. Injured but released later from the hospital was security guard Geran Cabañero from Taytay in El Salvador City. The security agency reported that the two guards were on patrol around subdivision when they spotted the suspects on the act of entering a house. Unknown to the guards, the two suspects were armed with a caliber .45 pistol, caliber .22 pistol and an improvised 9mm KG9 machine pistol. The shootout then ensued between the two groups where Busbos was hit in the body and died on the spot while one of the suspects was killed and the other managed to escape to the adjacent subdivision where he was gunned down minutes later by the pursuing security guard. “Doon na talaga sila sa loob ng bahay, parang nakasense siguro sila na may responding security guard. So lumabas sila and then it
was the suspect na nagsimulang nagpaputok sa mga security guard,” Inspector John Cariaga, deputy chief of the Carmen police told the GMA News Northern Mindanao. Carmen police station chief Sr. Insp. Jophet Paglinawan said Busbos was hit four times. The bodies of the two suspects bore several tattoos including Latin writings. They also carried “antinganting” (amulets). Police said they believe the two suspects are members of a cult and possibly a robbery gang. Security at subdivision and other posh subdivisions have been tightened following the incident. Ironically, the bloody shootout happened at the time the local police in Northern Mindanao was on heightened alert due to the bombings in Zamboanga City and in Dologon in Maramag, Bukidnon.

Rebidding of PPP project could destroy investor-confidence Media reports indicated that a big PPP project = the CaviteLaguna expressway would be rebidded. These could to turn off investors, which in turn, would be a big slap on the face of the Philippine infrastructure program. Rebidding a P35.4-billion PPP project could derail the Aquino administration’s bid to fast-track infrastructure development. It was unfortunate when President Benigno Aquino III commented that he is inclined to favor a rebidding of the CaviteLaguna Expressway project. The rebidding of the P35.4billion ($790.7 million*) CALAX project is not the best way to get the best deal for the people. “The government’s dillydallying on CALAX could prove disastrous for the PPP scheme,”
Editorial a CLSA Research said in its latest sector outlook on Philippine infrastructure. “If ever the government decides to do this, it will be massively negative for the entire PPP program, as it reverses all the progress made in implementing a transparent bidding process,” CLSA’s Ignacio Gonzalez said in the report. How it all started? The Bidding for Cavite-Laguna Expressway project was held on June 14, 2014. Four bidders joined the bidding but only 3 were declared compliant by the DPWH. Team Orion led by the Ayala-Aboitiz group was declared the winning bidder with P11.659 Billion of premium bid. Metro Pacific’s bid was P11.330 billion, and Alloy MTD – P.999 billion. San
Miguel’s participation to the bidding was declared non-compliant to the rules according to DPWH Special Bids and Awards Committee. After their disqualification, San Miguel announced to the public that their premium bid was P20.1 billion, or P8.44 billion more than Team Orion’s compliant bid of P11.659 billion. On June 30, the Office of the President issued a stay order on the disqualification of San Miguel. After this, DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson said it was San Miguel’s “right to appeal directly with the Office of the President and there is nothing the DPWH can do.” This effectively suspended the awarding of the project indefinitely. A decision to declare a failure of bidding and to rebid the project being undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) could
turn off investors, for it could appear that the government is in favor of San Miguel Corporation (SMC), Gonzalez pointed out. “This could easily have been construed as the government favoring SMC to give them another chance, despite the fact that their bid was found by DPWH to have been non-compliant with the rules,” he added. A Negative Picture. Foreign and local investors want a transparent bidding process of major infrastructure projects. But the issue of rebidding on the particular project could project an image of favoritism by the government administration. Changing the established rules of the PPP bidding process mid-stream may become unpalatable to foreign and local investors’’ taste. Who would now believe in the transparency policy See ppp, page A9

DA-10 honors partners for successful MRDP2 implementation In recognition of partners in the successful implementation of the second phase Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP2) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) that is set to end this December, DA-10 duly awarded the outstanding implementers of the project. The awarding was held in a gathering of stakeholders, dubbed as People’s Organization (PO) Congress and Recognition of Outstanding Project Implementers on October 15, 2014 in Cagayan de Oro City. The one-day event was led by DA-10 Regional Director Lealyn A. Ramos together with Assistant Regional Director Roxana H. Hojas joined by around 400 participants that include mayors of different local government units (LGU) with their officers and staff, people’s organizations, DA-MRDP Regional Program Coordinating Office personnel headed by ARD Hojas as the Regional Program Coordinator, and representatives from partner agencies like NEDA, DENR, BFAR, NCIP, among others. Dir. Ramos, who is also the MRDP Program Director, acknowledged the great contribution of the LGU in achieving success of the program noting that the DA’s partnership with them is critical in the completion of MRDP projects as they act as lead implementers. “We are grateful to the governors, mayors, congressmen and women who have been our staunch partners through the years, and to the people’s organizations who exemplified strong will and dedication to effectively manage the project, we owe to you the success of MRDP2 in our region,” Ramos said in her speech during the

DSWD launches communitydriven development program By IRENE JOY B. DAYO

he Depar tment of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has launched another program that seeks to alleviate poverty in the country. In Region X, the launching took place November 11, 2014 at Limketkai Center, Cagayan de Oro City. The Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services – National Community-Driven Development Program (KALAHI CIDSS-NCDDP) is a flagship anti-poverty program of the national government that aims to empower communities to be involved in development through community-driven development approach (CDD), a globally recognized strategy for addressing poverty. This program offers comprehensive and integrated social services that ensure access and control of key development decisions and resources among poorest barangays, through community mobilization techniques. It also aims to improve local governance concerning transparency, accountability and community participation that are required in all barangays and municipal government structures. Moreover, KALAHI
CIDSS-NCDDP is an expanded scale of KALAHICIDSS implemented in Northern Mindanao for the last 10 years. In a speech given during the launching program, Regional Director Araceli F. Solamillo said that KALAHI CIDSS has caused massive changes in various municipalities in Northern Mindanao that are pilot areas of the program, including the province of Lanao del Norte. She said that the pro-
gram has also strengthened community development, increased participation among women, acquired quality participation from Maranao people, offered holistic approach of minimizing conflicts in conflictprone areas, helped in delivery of various programs and projects and made people realized that development can happen if they worked together as a community. to Filipinos pertaining to government efforts. The program targets 847 municipalities, with 19,647 barangays in 58 provinces of 14 regions in the country. In Northern Mindanao, KALAHI CIDSS-NCDDP shall cover 21 municipalities. Lanao del Norte Governor Khalid Q. Dimaporo is also present in the launching program. He shared the best practices and results of the program in his
province. Lanao del Norte is one of the pilot areas of the program for its high poverty incidence. Unveiling and signing of Wall of Commitment also took place in the event where local chief executives of 21 municipalities in Region X, national government agencies, civil society organizations, non-government organizations, academes and media signed in order to show commitment and support to KALAHI
CIDSS-NCDDP. Regional Director Solamillo added that they will have difficulty in the program implementation sans everyone in their side. Thus, she asked support of individuals present in moving several Filipinos out of poverty through this community-driven program. “Kaya natin ang pagbabago kung magkakapitbisig tayo!” the regional director ended.

Surigao City––In an anticipation of the influx of Overseas Filipino Workers who are coming back in the provinces of Surigao and Dinagat this coming holiday season, Caraga Regional Hospital in Surigao City are now preparing for the deadly disease. An official from Caraga Regional Hospital (CRH) said that they plan to procure additional personnel protective equipment (PPE) so as to have these if Ebola does reach the provinces, especially with the arrival of kin and visitors abroad from Christmas and New Year’s break. Dr. Andres M. Dolar, chief of the CRH based in Surigao City, in an interview with Mindanao News Daily today, said their facility is now being prepared at Caraga Regional Hospital. Dolar said the current isolation ward which was

AMBOANGA City - Gunmen aboard a motorcycle killed a town councilor in Zamboanga Sibugay Sunday and injured his wife, police reported. Senior Supt. Robert Roy Bahian, Zamboanga Sibugay police director, identi-
fied the fatality as Councilor Sarabon Bawa, 52, of Tungawan municipality. Wounded was Bawa’s wife, Aida, 52, a businesswoman. Tungawan Mayor Randy Climaco said the Bawa couple was into fishing business, who owned and operated fishing boats.
Bahian said the victims were repeatedly shot with a caliber .45 pistol by one of two men riding in tandem in a motorcycle around 1:30 in the afternoon Sunday along the national highway at Purok Talisay, Barangay Tiayon in the capital municipality of Ipil.
Bahian said investigation showed the victims were aboard a truck on the way to Ipil from Tungawan when the motorcycle-riding suspects overtook and repeatedly shot the victims. He said the victims were rushed to the hospital but the councilor died along the

P35.4-billion CALAX project. It claimed that a rebidding would ‘maximize economic benefits’. Would it really? The politicized decision on the bidding has already delayed the project. PCCI, headed by FilipinoChinese businessman Alfredo Yao, submitted on October 28 to President Benigno Aquino III its 8-point economic reform, including the prioritization of infrastructure development. But again changing the rules midstream is outright unfair and unjust. Is it because of the P8.4 billion difference? If bidders for future PPP projects would shy away from participating, then monopoly could sit in, or favored biddings could destroy transparency and promote corruption. Given that hands are known to transmit pathogens to other parts other individuals, hand hygiene and gloves are essential, both to protect the health worker and prevent transmission to others, WHO said. Face cover, protective footwear, gowns or coveralls, and head cover were also considered essential to prevent transmission to healthcare workers. “Although PPE is the most visible control used to prevent transmission, it is effective only if applied together with other controls, including facilities for barrier nursing and work organization, water and sanitation, hand hygiene, and waste management,” says Marie-Paule Kieny, Assistant Director-General of Health Systems and Innovation. Benefits derived from PPE depend not only on the choice of PPE, but also adherence to protocol on the use of the equipment. A fundamental principle guiding the selection of different types of PPE was the effort to strike a balance between the best possible protection against infection while allowing health workers to provide the best possible care to patients with maximum ease, dexterity, comfort and minimal heatassociated stress. In this situation where evidence is still being collected, to see what works best and on an effective, sustainable basis, it was considered prudent to pro-
vide options for selecting PPE. In most cases, there was no evidence to show that any one of the options recommended is superior to other options available for healthcare worker safety. “Further work is needed to gather scientific experience and data from the field in systematic studies, in order to understand why some health workers are infected in the current outbreak and to increase effective clinical care,” according to WHO advisory.

Davao coal plant eyes operations early 2015 D AVA O C i t y - T h e 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant here is eyed to start its commissioning and operations by the first half of 2015. This was revealed by Aboitiz Power corporate communications manager Willy Rodolfo. “It’s about 90% complete and we’re right on schedule.” Rodolfo said during Monday’s (Nov. 10) Kapehan sa SM. He added that within a few months they would be able to testing the plant. “testing means practically running the plant but not on a continuous basis.” Rodolfo added. The plant if it would start operating would boost power supply to the major cities of Mindanao except Zamboanga. The plant will supply the power needs of 22 power cooperatives across Mindanao. Franchise areas under Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) will benefit from the operations of the coal plant as it has contracted 100 megawatts from its load. Rodolfo also added that the they are on track in meeting the requirements of the Davao City Sangguniang Panglungsod (City Council). Among these is the utilization of surface water to cool the plants instead of extracting underground sources and also the implementation of the carbon sink for the plant. The company is currently implementing its 500 hectares carbon sink in Marilog. where farmers/partners are already trained in the agroforestry program and are now capable of re-echoing it to the community. pol municipality in Misamis Oriental aims to jump start its quest for cityhood with a Public-Private-Partnership project that would provide it with a world-class water supply system in the next 24 months. “Man’s most basic need is water, water is life,” said Opol Mayor Maximino B. Seno. “If we have a global standard water supply system, more investors would be encouraged to set up shop in Opol and boost our credentials to become a fullpledged city.” Already, Seno said the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is expanding its sub-station in Opol to accommodate the projected increase in demand from new businesses. “Just this year about 150 new investors have come into Opol and invested around P300 million,” the mayor said. Biggest among these is the P250-million Seven Seas Water Park of UC-1 Corporation at Bgy. Barra slated to start operations next year. Other big time investors include the Yupangco Group, Ororama Group, Gaisano Group, SaveMore Market chain of neighborhood grocery stores of the SM Food Retail Group, Graphics, UKC and Fairmart. Cagayan de Oro City Water District (COWD) and has an estimated daily water demand of 8-10,000 cubic meters (cu.m.). “However, the COWD can only supply 10 percent of our needs,” Seno said. “We have no municipal water system and at present residents and businesses have to make do with artesian wells.” Seno signed a Memorandum of Understanding 07 November 2014 in behalf of the Opol municipal government with A Brown Co. Inc. (ABCI) at the Opol town hall for the conduct of a detailed feasibility study for the Municipal Bulk Water Supply Project. If proven feasible, the project will be undertaken by ABCI under Public-Private Partnership
(PPP) guidelines set by the national government. “We started consultations with residents last September and ABCI came up with a pre-feasibility study,” Seno said. “Once the full-blown FS shows the project is viable, we will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with ABCI, after which its proposal will be subject to a Swiss Challenge under existing PPP Guidelines.” The project envisions a bulk water supply system to be sourced from a spring from Bgy. Tingalan, some 18 kms. from the Opol Poblacion. It will be gravity fed and use an advanced proprietary hollow fiber technology from The Netherlands for water treatment. Initially, the project is
targeted to supply 15,000 cubic meters (cu.m.) of water to Opol daily with a future expansion up to 25,000 cu.m. when the off-taker opts to supply neighboring municipalities up to Laguindingan and the airport. “We are talking to another company which will buy the bulk water supply from us and distribute it through a water distribution system it will set up in Opol,” said Roel Z. Castro, ABCI executive vice president following the MOA signing. In an interview with some journalists prior to the signing, Seno said the initial investment for the bulk water supply project is estimated at P300-million with another P300-million to be invested by the bulk-
water supply off-taker and distributor. However, Seno assured residents and other stakeholders attending the MOU signing he has initially secured the agreement of ABCI and the potential off-taker/distributor not to make its tariffs higher than the COWD’s. At present, Opol is classified as a second class municipality by the Bureau of Local Government Finance (BLGF) and had a reported population of 52,108 as of the 2010 Philippine Census. Opol was created through Republic Act. No. 524 on June 15, 1950 and has 14 mostly urban barangays. To support its vision to become a first class municipality and eventually a city, Castro said ABCI is offering the services of the company’s urban planners for free. ABCI is a leading residential estate developer in Northern Mindanao and pioneered the Xavier Estates in Cagayan de Oro. Its other projects include Teakwood Hills in Bgy. Agusan, Valencia Estates and Mountain Pines Farm in Bukidnon, Coral Resort Estates in Initao, Misamis Oriental; and West Highland Golf & Residential Estates in Butuan City; Besides real estate development, ABCI also engaged in agribusiness, power and utilities, and accommodations and recreational facilities.

infestation of foreign music in our FM band shores. Then there’s the advent of digital download technology in the internet. And there’s the availability of numerous music software that any artist can now record in his own home with less cost and more time. What then is the REAL state of national Filipino music? Of course, the natural culprit would be piracy, and our ‘acquired’ mentality to buy it, even though by doing so has eaten up the life out of our own music and its future. Another natural scapegoat are the recording companies and music critics, and music producers who have based the music industry standard on the salability of an artist or a song, but who can’t even sing a single note or play a single chord and play their game by trying to please their bosses, or the bosses who only have only one thing in mind – sales. And well, there is the mentality of these recording gods that they ‘own’ their artist and their creations are theirs. While the abovementioned were quite outside and indirect, there were the people directly around Yano and myself personally that tried to convince me to call it a day, like Yano’s management, and members of the family who convinced me to make that choice as a ‘wiser’ option, almost on a daily nagging basis. This was what the question really meant to me. This arose in 1999 when I decided to migrate to my hometown Davao. But that wasn’t the reason. The reason was more of the traffic which in 8 years of being there, I can no longer stand. And Davao’s water, which was the best in Asia and the 2nd in the world. I can no longer stand Manila and why should I be there when there’s a better environment in my own hometown. The music stood still in my mind. And I knew that I know what it meant to be in Davao with the music in my mind. And that’s exactly what I had up on my shoulders and cursing my mind. But NOT really. I was thinking in a different direction. And location. I was thinking about a

change in mentality – mine. I thought that I knew what I’m up to. All that’s around me, are around me. But not about me. Mine was a different mind. I knew and defined differently what Filipino Music is all about. Its melody. Its rhythm. Its past. And its future. (Although we’re going to tackle this in length in another article here soon). It was the SAME direction where I was since the 1st album. And my childhood mind before that. We already had it then in the 90s. Even in the 80s and way before that when Filipino music began – our appreciation of our own music. We had our APPRECIATION of our own music. And that’s where I thought is the ground that I should stand on and in. And not be disturbed nor be perplexed upon the supposedly intricate and delicate and even volatile state of the industry as a whole. I’d rather continue on laying my eyes and ears to myself, to what I’m going to say, what story I’m going to tell, I thought. Whatever the outcome of my relationships. Whatever the political and economic climate of the nation. Whatever the development of technology and social media. Whatever the conditions and circumstances at the surroundings. My mind will know what to say. My mind will know what to do. And I say it in a matter-of-factly manner. Even if I didn’t know, and just by saying that I know would result in knowing, and having an idea or a thing. Than if I didn’t know, and just by saying that indeed I didn’t know, then nothing would result
henceforth, would there? THIS was my answer to the question that following morning. And clearly, there is no more guessing who asked that question in the first place. It was I. Hence, in 2003 I did a solo album ‘Sa Bandang Huli’, in 2012 I did the 4th Yano album ‘Talâ’, and just on September this year, Yano released the 5th album ‘Ya Hindi No’ (which was launched in London, UK). And did music videos in 2013. And made the official website http://yano.ph and was up online in January 2014. It was in doing everything alone that achieved more than what all the conflicts should have resulted in. The decision to think in this way or direction was clearly one that was challenged with ambiguity. Yet now, it appears to be more sound and clearer than all the spontaneous dispositions hurled against this decision at the time, even ‘til now. And there is more to thank for now than the continuation of Yano. It is the fact that many are now standing for and behind what Yano is truly all about. It is about all of us, our simplicity; but more so how we ‘simplify’. It’s about our common yet significant experiences in all the songs that are about ourselves. Yet we stand on and for the ‘Ya’ (yes) perspective. Because simply, that is the only perspective that will enable our oneness with one’s self and enable our progress as individuals, then as family and then as a whole nation. And in any situation, we know rather than not, that it is ‘Ya’. In the next article we’re going to discuss about all the 12 songs in the new Yano album ‘Ya Hindi No’.

Here comes Yuletide a’cheerin AS a secular journalist, I have the responsibility to be politically correct at all times. Thus, I never use the word Christmas. If there’s a corporate party during December, I call it a yearender. Per Church tradition, the Christmas celebration is supposed to start on the first Sunday of Advent. That will be on November 30 this year. So the secular activities between now and November 30 I’ll refer to as Yuletide. Yuletide used to be a solely paganic festival in Europe. When Christianity invaded the continent, they retained some of the popular cultural activities.
That included Yuletide. They then incorporated certain elements of Yuletide to Christmas because both fests are celebrated duing winter season. One of the more Yuletide elements of Christmas is the ham that we eat during Christmas Day. Today, Yuletide is associated more with the commercialism of Christmas and it is where I’m focusing my column on. At exactly the first day of September, shopping malls from all over the country fed their public audio system with Christmas hits. Only lately did I know that this phenomenon is not exclusive to the Philip-

pines alone. Everywhere in America, Christmas decors also start popping up as early as September. This will be pronounced even after Halloween and more so during Black Friday and Thanksgiving Day, which is the run-up to Christmas Day. Here in the Philippines, we have our own All Saints Day and All Souls Day which interrupts the commercialism of malls to fully instill the Christmas spirit. But after All Souls Day, huge Christmas balls start appearing. Decorations are a’plenty hawked. Even prisoners join the foray. (The Misamis Oriental Pro-
vincial Jail comes to mind.) Manila-based companies start their provincial tours and award top-caliber employees, suppliers and partners as early as the second week of November. (I can distinctly recall Globe and GMA Network …hehe!) They do this so they can tour all the major cities just in time to be back to Manila by the third week of December. The Church has its own duty to remind the faithful on what matters most during Christmas – that it is the commemoration of the Savior being born to redeem humanity.
