22nd Naliyagan Festival kicks off tomorrow

PATIN-AY, Prosporidad, Agusan del Sur––Thousands of Agusanons are expected to join the weeklong celebration dubbed as the” Naliyagan Festival “that will kick-off on June 12 with the hoisting of the country’s national flag here as part of the provincial festival. Armando Gomez, the province’s public information chief, said the hoisting of Philippine national flag that commemorate the 116th Independence Day at the Naliyagan cultural center (NCC) in Patin-ay will give signal to the grand opening of the seven-day activities. “The flag raising rite will be headed by Rep. Ma. Valentina Plaza of the province’s first district, 2nd district Rep. Evelyn Plaza-Mellana and Gov. Adolph Edward G. Plaza”, Gomez said. Two ‘soft opening’ activities of the festival called as “Hugyaw to Agusan” and “Bubuta Tu Manok Tu Naliyagan (a 4-cock derby) were already held on June 7 and 11, respectively. PRESIDENT Benigno S. Aquino III has certified as urgent the passage of House Bill No. 4296 that will ensure the completion of the land acquisition and distribution (LAD) component of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). In separate letters to Senate President Franklin Drilon and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., the President said it is crucial to address the immediate need to extend the operation of the LAD program under the CARP which is set to expire at the end of this month. The completion of LAD component of the CARP is pursuant to Republic Act No. 6657, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law. Dengue cases up by 54% in C. de Oro, health department warns as rains begin

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit of the Department of Health in the Regional 10 (DOH-10) has reported that dengue has

already claimed the lives of 6 children in the region with increase cases in Cagayan de Oro City by 54.17 percent. The cases were recorded despite the onset of rainy season yet, hence, Dr. Joselyn Torrecampo, program manager for Dengue Prevention and Control, DOH-10,

warned of a surge in dengue cases this rainy season. DOH-10 held a press conference with the local media in observance of “ASEAN Dengue Day” and “Dengue Awareness Month” yesterday, drumming up awareness on dengue and other mosquito-borne dis-

eases, like malaria. In its Disease Surveillance Report, Dr. Torrecampo said a total of 2107 dengue cases were admitted to the 110 sentinel hospitals region-wide from January 1 to June 7, 2014. Region-wide the figure is lower compared to the

same period last year, which has 2306. However, Cagayan de Oro City recorded an increase in dengue cases by 54.17 percent with 1150 cases as against 936 last year for the same period. The ages of victims See BEGIN, page 11
