SUNTRUST Properties’ Inc. launched on Friday its newest property development project known as the Suntrust Palm City, a 27.7-hectare affordable housing subdivision in Barangay Mankilam in Tagum City. With an initial investment of P2.6 billion, Suntrust Properties, a whollyowned subsidiar y of Megaworld Corporation, has signed a joint venture agreement with its development partner PNS Development, Inc. on Friday at the Big 8 Corporate Hotel here. Atty. Harrison Paltogan, Suntrust president, said this new investment indicates the company’s business confidence in Tagum City’s economic potentials. “It is high time to contribute to Tagum City’s progress, we wanted to be part of Tagum’s development and it is somehow our contribution to the

economic progress in the city by building a premier horizontal property, the biggest single development in Tagum,” said Paltogan. He said the prices of the house and lot packages range from P2.6 million to P5.7 million. Lemuel R. Podador, president of PNS Development Inc., for his part, said that he is looking for ward to the partnership as they shared one vision with Suntrust which is to elevate way of living in the city through catering to the affordable market. PNS Development Inc. owns the land where the development will be erected. Suntrust Palm City, is a 27.7 hectares property composed of three enclaves namely the Bismark Palm, Royal Palm and Phoenix Palm. Of the total area property, 26.7 hectares of which will be devoted to residential area while the remaining one hectare will be for the two commercial buildings.

IN reaction to the ongoing climate change summit where 150 world leaders around the world gathered in Paris, Pope Francis commented that the human race is on the “limits of suicide.” The Pope was referring to the irreversible climate change unless the world leaders would adopt a tangible policy that would be adopted worldwide to arrest the growing concern of climate change in the coming years. Russian President Vladimir Putin, one of the participants of the climate change summit, is insisting that the talks about “climate change” should end in “legally binding agreement.” Leaders around the world have expressed the alarm about the danger of climate change in response to reports that the carbon dioxide level of the Earth’s atmosphere has exceeded the 400 parts per million level in the early 2015. CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Until the power transmission lines are secured, the entry of new power players would not improve the energy situation in Mindanao, a firm tasked to transmit power in Mindanao said on Tuesday. Beth Ladaga, of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), said that the energy situation will not improve if there are no transmission lines to deliver the new capacity to the distribution utilities and household consumers. Ladaga was referring to various transmission lines that crossed along farm lots in Lanao Del Sur that have remained vulnerable due to trees planted by landowners who wants payment at exorbitant rates. Paris climate talks spew 300,000 tons of CO2

MOSCOW--The Paris climate summit has drawn leaders from all over the world, seeking a solution to curb global warming. But doing the math, the summit itself could release hundreds of thousands of tons of CO2 in the atmosphere, all for talks which may ultimately prove ineffective. Between diplomats, delegates, aides, activists, journalists, NGOs, and even high school students, over 50,000 people will be in attendance for the Paris climate summit that began on Monday. With attendees from 195 countries, the talks will hopefully lead to the establishment of an international agreement for how best to combat the threat of climate change. But bringing that many people together from all corners of the globe comes at a hefty cost. As Wired Magazine points out, the CO2 emissions from travel alone will be enormous. When taking into account all of the far-reaching cities from which attendees are travelling, the average distance per traveler is roughly 9,000 miles. Most of those journeys will be taken by airplane, which means when making a conservative calculation, 27 million gallons of jet fuel will be used to ferry individuals to and from Paris. “When burned, every one of those 27 million gallons of jet fuel releases about 21 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Added up, all those planes flying to the Paris climate talks will release about 575 million pounds of CO2,” Nick Stockton writes for Wired. That may be a fraction of the carbon emissions released annually -- which roughly equals 80 quadrillion pounds -- but it’s still hard to overlook the irony, especially given that the talks may, in fact, accomplish very little. Any deal reached would undoubtedly rely on the cooperation of the United States, one of world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases. But with a large number of US Congressional lawmakers still refusing to even acknowledge the existence of man-made climate change, any agreement will likely see pushback in the Republican-led Senate. While Obama has pledged to use an executive order which could circumvent Congress, some Senators are skeptical of that plan. “Should the negotiations produce a more substantive outcome as European delegates announced, then there is no way around the Senate,” Republican Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma told the Washington Post. “I would urge caution in considering any diplomatic promises that may suggest otherwise as the president is once again attempting to make international promises he cannot deliver.” Others have expressed concern that any agreement would be difficult to implement. Without real penalties for breaching the accord, countries would have little incentive to actually follow along. “What does legally binding mean in an agreement that is not going to have financial penalties for noncompliance?” Paul Bledsoe, a former climate policy aide in the Clinton White House, told the Post. “In the World Trade Organization, it is hard enough -- and that does have penalties.” In light of these facts, maybe a global, 50,000-person conference call would have been more appropriate. The importance of instructional materials is that they can be used to explain our points, reduce abstractions, create reality, and encourage active participation of the students’ engagement to learning. The key reasons why teachers wish to produce their own teaching materials is that they can contextualize to match or fit the cultural or educational context of the school or to adapt the teaching materials to their own pace of learning and the learning environment to overcome the lack of fitness of the resources available. Another reason of teachers in producing their own materials is that they could address to the individual need of the learners because teacher-designed materials can be very responsive to the diversity of individual learners within the classroom, teacher -produced materials provide the opportunity to select texts and activities at exactly the right level for particular learners to ensure appropriate challenge and level of success. And another key reason that authors identified for the reasons of producing their own materials is that they can personalize which provides them the opportunity

to add their personal touch to teaching that students are likely to appreciate, and thus tap the interests of learning styles of students to increase motivation and active engagement in learning process. Teacher-designed materials could also respond to local and international events with the up-to-date, relevant topics and tasks as the advantage of timelines. Aside from the advantages of the teacherproduced materials, there are also disadvantage like the lack of organization of content, the quality of material, and lack of clear instructions. As a teacher, we must know that the success of the learning experience depends on our knowledge on the effective application of teaching aids so as to suit with the interests of the learners and with the appropriateness of the instructional tasks. A teacher should be conscious of the disadvantages and advantages of their own produced instructional material with the factors and guidelines that need to be considered in designing effective teaching materials. The use of the resources and teaching aids should reflect the aspect of lifelong learning and the learners’ total environment.

one percent of coral reefs are in “excellent” condition, meaning they still have 75 percent to 100 percent of live, hard coral cover. That’s dismal against the 27,000 square kilometers of reefs left in the country. To reverse the tide, the National Program on Coral Restoration collected broken or dislodged fragments that fall when the branching Acropora coral species are damaged. “We can rehab coral reefs if coastal local governments declare and properly manage at least 15 percent of municipal waters as protected, no-fishing zones,” said Vina Salac of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) which funded the program. The fragments collected from the sea floor must measure at least four inches; longer ones are transplanted directly. The 4-inch “Corals of Opportunities” or COPs are transplanted in coral nurseries and allowed to recover for two-months. They are later harvested and transplanted to coral substrates using the nailwire-epoxy tool. To ensure that COPS remain erect, plastic cable ties the fragment securely to the nail; an epoxy putty applied to the fragment base ensures that it remains in place. This is where the hard work comes: only trained and licensed divers are allowed to do the job, and that means training villagers, some of them women. They are also taught basic coral biology. A previous study has shown that the fragments grow 0.8 centimeter a month, said Dr. Samuel Gulayan of Bohol Island State University (BISU) whose project in Anda, Bohol, transplanted 30,000 fragments. “That’s faster than other species of corals,” said Portugal. So far, 122 villagers (about three of 10 are women) have been certified as licensed divers. They were taught transplanting techniques, without which they could do more damage to reefs. While not tending to the fragments (a volunteer work), they can freelance as dive and ecotourism guides. It costs P4 million to rehabilitate each one-hectare site, including site identification, public consultations and training. It’s a small bill to bring back fisheries – and livelihoods. Fisherfolk are allowed to fish outside of restoration sites that are all inside protected areas, marine parks, sanctuaries or reserves where no fishing and human activities are allowed except for ecotourism and research.
